Joined by special guest: Mike Ryan

In this episode, the panelists talk to Mike Ryan, Software Architect at Synapse, Google Developer Expert, and a core team member of the NgRx team. Joe starts the discussion by elaborating on the topic chosen and explains what constitutes a "problem" in a developer's life. He asks the panel how often do they use classical algorithms in their everyday work. They then steer the discussion from implementing classical algorithms to logical ones, and discuss how they tackle and overcome complex computing challenges that can be very taxing. They talk about a technique called "Rubber Duck programming", how to go about creating a conducive environment for problem solving, and explain the concept of "flow" in software development along with its importance while dealing with issues. They discuss if pair-programming and mob-programming help in problem solving and their benefits.

After discussing problem solving in computing, the panelists change the direction of the conversation towards solving team and process pitfalls. They talk about how important friendships and emotional investments can be, especially when there are challenges at work and Jesse explains a methodology called the Quadrant System. In the end, they speak on handling personal problems as an engineer and offer helpful tips to listeners.

The panel introduces themselves in this exciting new podcast. Roman Storm, a former software engineer, wanted to build a startup and heard about Bitcoin. After building himself a bitcoin wallet and later moved the Ethereum, he eventually began security consulting for companies in the blockchain space. Bruno Duarte Brito has a very unique story having never owned a cryptocurrency or a wallet; he found his way to the blockchain by requesting to be put on a blockchain project at his company. Bruno mostly works with Hyperledger and blockchain for business. Gregory McCubbin, a self-taught developer, started following cryptocurrency prices and wanted to learn more. Looking for online resources, he found the materials available scarce. After learning blockchain he built up Dapp University as a resource for future blockchain developers. 

The panel discusses the importance of where you are starting from and what is bringing you to the blockchain. Bruno discusses the importance of knowing the blockchain theory. The panel advises getting some cryptocurrency or trying a test network and outlines the benefits of using cryptocurrency to understand how the blockchain works. Blockchain, as a relatively new technology, holds many possible use cases for the creative and curious developer. The panel discusses some of the use cases being seen and explored, including blockchain for business, cryptocurrency, securing medical records and Dubai’s smart city project.

Craig Spence was a developer at Trade Me in New Zealand before he moved to Sweden to join Spotify. Trade Me is New Zealand's biggest website and it is similar to eBay where people buy and sell lots of different items. Craig talks about his experiences migrating Trade Me from AngularJS to Angular and the challenges they faced. One of the tips Craig has for the audience is when faced with a problem it is better to ask for help from those who have been in similar situations before, rather that attempting to solve it alone. The panel also agrees that developers should stop writing in AngularJS and make the decision to move forward. Craig recently started working at Spotify in Sweden and is dealing with a challenging bug that has lasted for over 13 days.

Jeff Meyerson is the host of the Software Engineering daily podcast and has also started a company called FindCollabs, an online platform for finding collaborators and building projects. Jeff started FindCollabs because he believes there are all these amazing tools but people are not combining and collaborating as much as they could, when so much good could be accomplished together. FindCollabs is especially useful for working on side projects. The panelists discuss the problems encountered when you try to collaborate with people over the internet, such as finding people who are facing similar and gauging interest, skill, and availability. Thankfully, FindCollabs has a feature of leaving reviews and rating your partners so that users can accurately gauge other’s skill level. Users can also leave comments about their experience collaborating with others. The only way you can show competence with an interest is to contribute to another project. FindCollabs is also a good place to look for mentors, as well as for Bootcamp graduates or people going through an online coding course. If you are part of an organization, you can create private projects. The company plans to expand this feature to all users in the future.The panelists talk about their past experiences with collaborating with other people.

Jeff talks about his podcast Software Engineering Daily and how it got started and the focus of the podcast. As someone working in technology, it is important to stay current on up and coming technology, and listening to podcasts is an excellent way to do that. Jeff talks about where he thinks podcasting is going, especially for programmers. The panel discusses some of the benefits of listening to programming podcasts. Jeff talks about how he is prepping Software Engineering Daily for the future. He shares the audience size for Software Engineering Daily and some of the statistics for his different channels. Jeff has also released an app for Software Engineering Daily, and he shares some information on how it was written. Finally, Jeff gives advice for people who want to use FindCollabs and some of the next steps after creating a profile.

David A. Black has been a Ruby user for 19 years and has been writing books about Ruby for the last 14 years. Joseph spent 12 years in software and started the company Def Method Inc. Together, they co-authored the book The Well-Grounded Rubyist, which will soon have its third edition released. They give some of the history behind The Well-Grounded Rubyist. Joseph talks about his experience being brought into the project. David and Joseph talk about how The Well-Grounded Rubyist is different from other books on Ruby. This book is helpful because a lot of people begin by understanding Ruby more than Rails, and this book talks about ways to think about Ruby and understand how it’s structure. Joseph and David talk about how The Well-Grounded Rubyist 3rd edition differs from the 2nd edition. The book has been updated so that a lot of the code and solutions for the exercises are available online and there is an additional chapter in part 3 about Ruby dynamics and how one would write functional programming with Ruby

The panel discusses how important it is to learn Ruby before starting a job in Rails 2. They agree that if you are a Ruby developer, even if you’re working on Rails apps, so you should know your tools. They discuss how far down that road The Well Grounded Rubyist would get readers. They panelists talk about other books that are a natural prequel or sequel to the The Well-Grounded Rubyist. Joseph and David talk about their approach to reading books and how The Well-Grounded Rubyist should be read. Their goal in making the book was not to have people work on an overarching application while reading the book, but rather there are exercises and examples that you are encouraged to work through. There are some lessons in the book that you won’t write often, but you still need to know how to do it. While the book doesn’t have everything about Ruby, but the examples are designed to give you the best returns for you study. David and Joseph conclude by giving their final thoughts on the book.

Todays guest Daishi Kato is a freelance programmer and has many open source libraries. He starts off by talking about how he got from tail call optimization to Redux and global state. Daishi talks about his definition of global state, how it differs from a regular state, and why it is a problem with the current context implementation. Thomas talks about his work with Android and how React has helped solved some of the problems they encountered. They talk about when different rendering issues they’ve encountered. Daishi shares his unique approach to solving rendering issues and how it applies to his libraries. His solution is to combine the system in React with proxy based tracking to solve issues with rendering. Daishi explains why this works and the importance of benchmarking. Daishi’s solution is designed as a same use state API, so someone can drop this in and see if it works.

Daishi talks about his definition of proxies and how it triggers the rerender. He also talks about how it handles conditional reads. This tracking happens every render and it doesn’t have the same limitations as hooks. The panel talks about the new version of React Redux library implementation and how it compares to Daishi’s. Daishi’s approach is useful for people earning Redux because the used tracked state gives you all the benefits without a lot of the complexity. Daishi talks about how it deals with deeply nested pieces of code.

The panel discusses the delicate balance of optimizing, but not doing it too soon, but to also remember how vital it is to maintain the performance of your app. Daishi’s work with Reactive React Redux to make sure things perform from the beginning is really important. It’s also important to understand how your product works so that when things do go wrong, you know how to fix it. Daisho talks about his other library React Tract for people who don’t like to use Redux.
