¿Cómo domesticamos a los animales? El origen de la domesticación

Durante el Paleolítico Superior, el ser humano inició un proceso que transformaría para siempre su relación con el mundo: la domesticación de los animales, una de las principales innovaciones culturales humanas, comparable en importancia a la fabricación de herramientas, la conquista del fuego, la evolución del lenguaje verbal, la agricultura, el sedentarismo o la escritura. Lo cierto es que la domesticación fue un proceso lento y gradual que marcó una importante transición evolutiva en la historia de la humanidad, con profundas y duraderas repercusiones globales, pues gracias a ella surgieron la ganadería, se consolidaron las primeras sociedades agrícolas y el curso de la civilización cambió para siempre.
Pero ¿cómo y por qué comenzó la domesticación? ¿Qué significa realmente domesticar a un animal? ¿Por qué este proceso surgió en distintos lugares del mundo en un intervalo de tiempo tan corto? ¿Por qué en ese preciso momento y no antes o después? ¿Cuál fue el primer animal que domesticamos? ¿Por qué el ser humano consiguió domesticar al perro, la vaca o el caballo, pero nunca a la cebra, al ciervo o al elefante? ¿Y en qué consiste el enigmático síndrome de la domesticación, un fenómeno que sigue intrigando a los investigadores?
