Devotionables

The overwhelming theme of all of Scripture is the faithfulness of God – from creation through the history of Israel through the early church and all the way to the promise of Christ's return, we can see

that God is ever-faithful. The Love of God will never let us go! As the psalmist says, "For the Lord is good; his steadfast love endures forever, and his faithfulness to all generations."

Think of a close friend with whom you can talk about anything. Maybe it's a spouse, a sibling, an accountability partner. Someone with whom you feel comfortable enough to share what's going on in your life and heart. Nothing is off-topic, but you naturally express whatever is on your mind. The hymn writer Joseph Medlicott Scriven lived in the mid-1800s and was an Irish poet and immigrant to Canada. He wants us to consider "What a Friend We Have in Jesus, " which is the name of today's hymn.

Thomas Ken wrote this hymn referred to as the "Common Glory." In this short stanza, Ken highlights the praise due the entire God-head with Trinitarian-focus. Let this hymn be a constant reminder of the praise God deserves and sing out this hymn as you live out each day.

"O Come All Ye Faithful" is a beautiful hymn celebrating the birth of our Savior. This hymn, written in the 18th century, calls to us to come and adore Christ the King, who is found in a stable in Bethlehem.

Augustus Toplady was a gifted hymn writer from England. His hymns are theologically rich and spiritually encouraging. His most famous hymn is "Rock of Ages." This hymn focuses on the salvation found only in God, our Rock of Ages, and purchased by the blood of Jesus. Our only hope is God acting on our behalf to save us. Come to him today!

Every once in a while, I hear a song that I wish I had written. O Praise the Name is one such song. I love it. It's currently my favorite worship song of all time. I love that it rehearses the gospel and leads us to worship the one true God. Good theology should lead to doxology. The authors of this song take us back to the work of Christ, AND they point us to his future return. All of which warrants the passionate expression of praise of Yahweh.

In this old yet classic hymn, we see the faithfulness of both God and Samuel - God’s prophet - in 1 Samuel 7. What a blessing it is for God to be our “Stone of help.” May we call on him regularly as we seek faithfulness in our lives. I hope ‘Come Thou Fount of Every Blessing’ becomes even richer and deeper in meaning for you as you see the Lord’s goodness to us.
