Dialed In with Thom Brennaman

It all begins tonight for your Cincinnati Bengals…it’s pre-season game NUMBER ONE. And it’s a very different first game than those of the past under head coach Zach Taylor…..Joe Burrow and the starters are getting some minutes on the field. Remember, we’ve questioned why they have not been in pre-season games of the past, especially considering the slow starts in the regular season. Tampa Bay is in town at paycor for a 7pm kickoff. You can watch the game on fox 19! One starter , at least in the return game, will not see action tonight. That’s charlie Jones . He injured his knee yesterday in practice and had to be carted off the field. Jay Morrison from pro football talk joins us in about 15 minutes with the latest on Jones and a preview of what to look for tonight! The Reds scoried 7 times in the tenth inning last night to beat the marlins for the third time in four days. The Marlins are awful. Tonight’s a different ballgame in the level of competition as the reds play the first of 3 against the division-leading milwaukee brewers. Milwaukee is pretty amazing….they have a first-year manager, have been injured even more thasn the reds, including 4/5ths of their starting rotation, yet they sit 16 games over .500 after a complete wipeout of the braves the last three days. Carson Spiers gets the ball for cincinnati. The game can be seen on Apple TV at 8 est. The Reds sit in a tie for last in the central with the cubbies. They are five back in the wildcard. Its starting to look like we may not see Matt Mcclain this season. His rehab assignment has been pushed back again and no timetable as to exactly if and or when it will happen at all. Mcclain has missed the entire season with shoulder surgery. We ask the question today: If the team can’t reach the playoffs , what would you like to see haoppen between now and the end of the year. FC Cincinnati plays in the round of 32 of the leagues cup tonight at tql against santos laguna out of the top mexican league. FCC was eliminated in this round one year ago. And how about the fire of the mens us olympic basketball team? They were down 17 headed in to the fourth quarter against Serbia and stormed back to win 95-91. Steph Curry scored 36….lebron notched a triple-double to send the states to the gold medal game against france. Remember, that was the matchup in the final four years ago. The womens team plays australia in the semi-finals at 11:15 eastern this morning. All kinds of medals to be won today across the board. The closing ceremonies are sunday. Reds Mcclain? Starters finish strong Marte start to show signs that he can be the guy

When the reds came out of the all-star break, all we heard was, they’re ready for a run…….especially after beating juggernauts colorado and miami in back to back series at home. The first series after the break, the worst three days of the season….a sweep against washington……after wins in atlanta, the reds roll into tampa bay, score four runs in three games, lose two of three against the rays, including yesterday’s killer loss. This offense is so bad. The defense stinks and their baserunning blunders occur virtually every night. Did Hunter Greene really have to leave the game at 100 pitches? Is that a hard rule? Lucas Sims? With the bases loaded? Are you kidding? Tonight the cubbies come to town for the first of a three-game series. That’s a series for last place. Bengals defensive end Sam hubbard left yesterday’s practice on a golf cart after suffering a knee injury. By alll accounts it doesn’t appear to be serious….thankfully, and he should be back soon. Jamar Chase still not practicving……any thoughts on that? We have em…. In a matter of moments, Charlie Goldsmith from cincinnati.com will join us to talk reds and bengals. The cowboys got really bad news yesterday when defensive end sam williams tore his left ACL during a non-contact-special teams drill yesterday, He will miss the entire season. And in the olympic games, team usa rolled in its first game 110-84 over serbia. Next up south sudan on wednesday.

Reds

The Reds scored 8 runs in three games. They struck out 39 times, including 15 yesterday, while walking 5 times. In terms of batting average and OBP, they are AMONG THE VERY WORST in Major League Baseball. And it’s not going to change….. It might be over the next seven days against the two worst teams in baseball, but until the injured return or the guys here now find a magic Jeanie….it isn't getting better. And btw….the Reds made a deal last night, acquiring giants outfielder Austin slater. He’s 31 years old…. basically a fifth outfielder on a good team. The Reds have lots of those already. Slater is hitting .200 in 45 games with one home run. They traded right-hander Alex Young to get him. Young has pitched brilliantly at Louisville after starting the year injured….pitched well last year for the team. Colorado comes to town for the first of four tonight. THE REDS ARE six games under .500, 10 ½ games behind the brewers in the NL Central. We will talk more about the team in a minute… The rosters for the all-star game came out yesterday..there are 33 first-time all-stars and 19 players under the age of 27, including the Red's very own Elly De La Cruz! One of the best stories is former Red Jeff Hoffman. He’s 31 years old and is going to his first all-star game as a member of the Phillies. The Reds let him walk out the door after an excellent 2022 season. How about FC Cincinnati? Like all of last year, they now have the best record in the MLS after blasting Inter Miami FC at TQL stadium over the weekend. FCC has lost just four times all season and will host Charlotte FC on Saturday.

The Local nine score two in the eighth, six in the ninth on a two-out, two-run home run byb spencer steer. Then a grand slam by jonathan india in a 12-7 win over the rockies.

Hunter greene opposes  javier assad at 7:10.

Cubbies are a .500 team, two in front ofr the reds.

Brewers get swept by the phillies after a 2-0 shutout yesterday.

After a disappointing series against the cardinals last week, the reds hit the road for chicago and colorado and the road trip has started nicely. Reds get a series win over the cubbies after winning the decisive game of the three-game set yesterday at wrigley. You think about this team and how no, you can’t blame all of their losses on injuries, but when you have a healthy TJ Friedl. And a healthy Nick Lodolo…….it makes a big difference in winning and losing. Lodolo goes six strong innings for the win, allowing seven hits and two runs. Friedl clubbed a three-run homer in the 5-2 win. On a down note, a rough weekend for elly de la cruz…..0 for 14 ….struck out 9 x. Got on base just one time with a walk. More on that later in the show. Cincinnati sits seven games under .500, 10 full games behind the red hot milwaukee brewers, who have won five straight. Tonight an 8:40P local start time in the MILE HIGH CITY. Andrew Abbott faces righthander ryan Feltner. College baseball…a great weekend to the opening round of the ncaa tournament. NKU and Indiana were knocked out early. That’s not the case for the number 2 ranked team in the nation….the Kentucky Wildcats. NHL Playoffs…the florida panthers have advanced to the stanley cup finals after beating the ny rangers 4 games to 2 . Their opponent? The Edmonton oilers . The beat the dallas stars 2-1 last night to won the western conference four gaMES TO 2. THE FINALS BEGIN SATURDAY in florida. NBA FINALS are set to begin sometime this month…. Actually thursday night in boston between the celtics and dallas mavericks. Then they are off friday….saturday…….play sunday. Come on. The biggest story in sports right now is this Caitlin Clark deal and this is getting really ugly. Jealousy is one humans ugliest traits….and man is it ugly in the wnba. Other players are jealous…..plain and simple. Theyre jealous of her popularity. Jealous of her money off the court. Its also becoming dangerous… Did you see this?

Start with injuries to CES, Friedl, Lodolo, Emilio pagan……that group joining the likes of Matt McClain, ian gibault and the suspended Noelvi Marte. You cannot try to evaluate this reds team based on the number of good, if not sometimes great players, that have missed significant time. It wouldn’t be fair. The losses just keep on comin….. They teased us a little bit with that sweep of the dodgers but we werent fooled here on Dialed In. Not for a minute. They promptly lose two of three to the cardinals….who stink. Qand starting today, it’s a three-game weekend series at wrigley against another team that stinks….the cubs. Criag Counsell’s team just went to milwaukee for the last four days and got lit up three times by the white-hot brew crew. Graham ashcraft faces javier assad in a 2:20P first pitch. Reds care 8 under, 9 games back in the central. The cubbies a game under .500..5 ½ out. College baseball…..that’s right, college baseball. Is it just me or does it seem like NKU and UK are the only local schools we talk about playing in ncaa tournaments? That’s the case today as the norse take on the number one overall seed in the ncaa tournament, tennessee, tonight in knoxville. First pitch 7p. The wildcats , the overall number 2 seed in the tourney, play at home against western michigan. That game starts at noon. The indiana hoosiers also play in nashville today at 1 in the opening round against southern miss. NBA Playoffs, the finals are set to begin IN A WEEK…more on that in a moment. Last night the dallas mavericks finished off then minnesota timberwolves 4 games to one in the western conference finals. Luka and Kyrie each goes for 36 points in a 124-103 blowout win. That sets up a matchup in the finals with the eastaren conference champion boston celtics. Boston an early favorite in Vegas. Bengals news……voluntary OTA’s continue downtown today. Burrow looks great. Still no Tee Higgins or Jamar Chase. They are no-shows….it is volunteer remember. They are watching other receivers around the league get big money.
