I am heartbroken to share that since the recording of this podcast interview, Roxy has passed away. Roxy was a ray of sunshine, vivacious, full of life and hilariously funny. Roxy had me laughing throughout the interview, she was honest, open and had so much love, support advice and information to share. After the interview Roxy remained connected and ALWAYS supported my content, resharing, commenting and ALWAYS giving me encouragement. This is a HUGE loss to the Kidney community. My heart, love and prayers go out to Roxy’s husband and family. Gone but never forgotten and forever in our hearts. RIEP Roxy 💔🙏🏽 Dee Moore

George was diagnosed with nephrotic syndrome at just two years old. Kidney disease would go on to shape his childhood, teenage years and adult life — including dialysis and two kidney transplants.
In this episode of Diary of a Kidney Warrior Podcast, George shares what it was like growing up with kidney disease, spending significant periods of his childhood in hospital and navigating the physical and emotional effects of treatment.
At 13, George had both of his kidneys removed and began haemodialysis before receiving his first kidney transplant from his dad. Years later, when that transplanted kidney began to fail, George returned to dialysis before receiving his second kidney transplant in 2018 — this time from his mum.
George talks openly about the impact kidney disease had not only on him, but on his sister, parents and relationships. He also reflects on the years when he struggled to find where he fitted in, how becoming a barber helped rebuild his confidence, and why he believes emotional and mental health support should be an integral part of kidney care.
In this conversation:
• Being diagnosed with nephrotic syndrome at age two
• Growing up with kidney disease and frequent hospital admissions
• The impact of steroids and treatment during childhood
• Having both kidneys removed and starting dialysis at 13
• Receiving a kidney transplant from his dad
• Returning to dialysis as an adult
• Receiving his second kidney transplant from his mum
• How chronic kidney disease can affect the whole family
• Identity, confidence and finding where you belong
• The psychological impact of kidney disease and transplantation
• Why George believes people living with kidney disease need greater mental health support
• His advice to anyone newly diagnosed with kidney disease
George’s story is a powerful reminder that kidney disease affects far more than kidney function — and that having the right people around you, talking about what you are experiencing and getting emotional support can make a real difference.
