Jerome Espy was living with diabetes and high blood pressure when he learned that his kidney function had declined to stage 4 kidney disease. What followed was a journey through declining kidney function, peritoneal dialysis, difficult decisions, challenges with his physical and mental wellbeing and, eventually, a kidney transplant made possible by an unexpected offer at a birthday party.
In this episode of Diary of a Kidney Warrior Podcast, Jerome speaks candidly about his kidney disease diagnosis and why, looking back, he wishes he had taken some of the advice he received about his health more seriously. He also shares a difficult early encounter with a nephrologist and reflects on the importance of the way healthcare professionals communicate with people who have just received a life-changing diagnosis.
As Jerome’s kidney function declined, he began peritoneal dialysis. At one point he became so unwell that he was sleeping for up to 16 hours a day, while also dealing with another frightening health concern. Jerome describes reaching an emotional low and the people who helped him through it, including his wife, mentors and others with lived experience of kidney disease.
He also shares one of the most distinctive lessons he took from peritoneal dialysis: “Drain. Fill. Dwell.” What began as the physical process of dialysis became a way of thinking about life — draining away what is harmful, filling your life with things that strengthen you and being mindful of what you allow yourself to dwell on.
Then, at a birthday party, Jerome happened to sit beside Tiger Whitehead, a friend he had not spoken to for around four years. During their conversation, Jerome explained that he was on dialysis and waiting for a kidney transplant.
Tiger told him that if he was a match, he would give him a kidney.
It wasn’t an empty promise. Tiger contacted the transplant team, went through the testing process and was able to donate. Jerome also had work of his own to do to prepare for transplantation, including losing weight to meet the requirements for surgery.
In December 2018, Jerome received his kidney transplant.
Jerome reflects on the difference transplantation made to his life, the importance of having the right support around you and why kidney disease should never be faced in isolation. He also talks about faith, mindset, mentoring other kidney patients and using his own experiences to encourage people travelling the road behind him.
This is a conversation about far more than receiving a kidney. It is about navigating kidney failure, finding support when things become overwhelming, learning from the difficult parts of the journey and the extraordinary difference one person’s decision to donate can make.
🎧 Listen to Jerome’s story — from kidney disease and peritoneal dialysis to the birthday party conversation that ultimately led to his kidney transplant.

In the very first episode of Diary of a Kidney Warrior Podcast, host Dee Moore shares the story of how her kidney journey began and the experiences that ultimately led to the creation of Diary of a Kidney Warrior.
In 2018, after months of feeling increasingly unwell, Dee went to A&E and was unexpectedly admitted to hospital with extremely high infection markers. What followed was a gruelling seven-and-a-half-week hospital stay, recurring high fevers and extensive investigations as doctors tried to understand why her kidneys were failing.
Dee reflects on being diagnosed with Stage 4 kidney disease, the emotional impact of learning that her kidney function was not recovering, and later being told that she could be just six months away from dialysis. She also shares the challenges surrounding her eligibility for the kidney transplant waiting list at that time and the effect everything was having on her physically and emotionally.
At one of her lowest points, three words changed her perspective: “Choose to live.”
Dee shares how those words helped her begin rebuilding her strength, adapting to what her body could now do and finding purpose in sharing her journey. What began as a vlog in April 2019 became Diary of a Kidney Warrior — a space created to share the realities of kidney disease while offering encouragement to others walking a similar path.
This first episode captures the beginning of both Dee’s kidney journey and the mission that would go on to shape Diary of a Kidney Warrior Podcast.
