  • Episode 127: CKD Diet: 5 Foods to Limit for Better Kidney Health | Part 2

What foods should you limit when you have chronic kidney disease? And could some foods and drinks that appear to be “healthy” actually be unsuitable for your individual kidney health needs?

In Part 2 of this two-part nutrition conversation on Diary of a Kidney Warrior Podcast, Dee Moore is joined again by renal specialist dietitian Timi Omilana to explore five food and drink categories that people living with chronic kidney disease (CKD) may need to limit.

Timi shares practical advice to help kidney patients make more informed food choices, while emphasising that kidney diets are individual and recommendations should be guided by your blood results and kidney care team.

    The five categories discussed are:

    • Salt and seasonings – including hidden salt in everyday foods, reading traffic-light food labels and why some low-sodium salt substitutes may contain potassium

    • Fruit juices and dark-coloured fizzy drinks – including potassium in fruit juice and phosphate additives that may be found in some soft drinks
    • Alcohol – considerations for people living with kidney disease, including fluid intake and phosphate
    • Processed foods – why convenience foods can contribute significant amounts of salt and other additives, and practical swaps you can make
    • Certain fruits and vegetables – understanding potassium and why dietary advice should reflect your individual blood results

Salt receives particular attention. Timi explains why simply changing from ordinary table salt to Himalayan, rock or “low salt” alternatives does not necessarily make something kidney-friendly. Some reduced-sodium salt substitutes replace sodium with potassium, which may be inappropriate for people who have been advised to restrict potassium.

Dee and Timi also discuss the amount of hidden salt that can accumulate through bread, seasonings, bouillon cubes, processed foods and other everyday products. Dee shares her own practical tip of measuring seasoning and using a brush to distribute it over meat rather than pouring it freely.

Fruit juice provides another surprising discussion. Although fruit juice may be perceived as healthy, Timi explains why eating the whole fruit can sometimes be preferable: one glass of juice may contain several pieces of fruit, while whole fruit also provides fibre.

The conversation also explores phosphate additives in some dark-coloured fizzy drinks, processed foods and alcohol, alongside the importance of understanding food labels.

When it comes to fruits and vegetables, Timi discusses potassium and preparation methods such as boiling or double boiling certain vegetables when appropriate. He also explains why frozen vegetables may sometimes be useful for people who need to manage their potassium intake.

Throughout the episode, one message remains important: kidney-friendly eating is not one-size-fits-all.

The foods you need to limit will depend on factors including your kidney function, blood results, other health conditions and treatment. A food that one kidney patient has been advised to restrict may be entirely appropriate for another.

Whether you are newly diagnosed with CKD, living with advanced kidney disease, receiving haemodialysis or simply trying to understand what a kidney-friendly diet might look like, this episode offers practical information to help you make more informed choices.

  • Episode 126: Kidney-Friendly Foods for CKD: 5 Foods You Can Still Enjoy | Part 1

What foods can you eat with chronic kidney disease? Do you really need to give up potatoes, snacks or the traditional foods you grew up eating?

In Part 1 of this two-part nutrition conversation on Diary of a Kidney Warrior Podcast, Dee Moore is joined by renal dietitian Timi Omilana to explore five kidney-friendly food categories and challenge some of the confusion surrounding diet and chronic kidney disease (CKD).

Timi explains why there is no single “renal diet” that is right for everyone. What you need to eat can depend on your stage of kidney disease, blood results, medications, nutritional needs and whether you are receiving dialysis.

Together, Dee and Timi explore five kidney-friendly food categories:

    • Plant proteins – including beans, peas and legumes, and the potential benefits of incorporating more plant-based sources of protein into your diet

    • Cultural and traditional foods – why African, Caribbean, South Asian and other familiar foods do not automatically need to disappear following a CKD diagnosis
    • Potatoes and grains – including practical ways of preparing potatoes to reduce potassium when necessary, alongside options such as rice and corn
    • Breakfast cereals – what to consider when choosing cereals and milk, including potassium, phosphate and fluid restriction
    • Snacks – why snacking isn’t automatically “bad” and how appropriate snacks can form part of a balanced kidney-friendly diet

Protein is an important part of the conversation. Timi explains why protein requirements can change as kidney disease progresses and why people receiving dialysis may require more protein than people in earlier stages of CKD.

The episode also tackles one of the biggest misconceptions surrounding a kidney-friendly diet: having kidney disease does not necessarily mean abandoning the foods that are part of your culture.

Timi discusses how cooking methods and appropriate food swaps can allow people from African, Caribbean, South Asian and other communities to continue enjoying familiar meals with their families while adapting them to their individual kidney health needs.

Potatoes are another food many kidney patients believe they must completely avoid. Timi explains how boiling potatoes in plenty of water can help reduce their potassium content when potassium restriction is necessary, and why individual blood results should guide dietary advice.

Dee and Timi also discuss breakfast cereals, different types of milk, fluid restriction and the role snacks can play for people who are struggling to maintain their weight or meet their nutritional needs.

The central message is simple: a kidney-friendly diet should be individualised. Rather than unnecessarily removing large numbers of foods from your diet, work with your kidney team and renal dietitian to understand what your blood results and nutritional needs mean for the foods you eat.

Whether you are newly diagnosed with CKD, living with advanced kidney disease, receiving dialysis or supporting someone with kidney disease, this episode offers practical information to help make food choices feel less restrictive and more manageable.

Disclaimer: This episode is for educational and informational purposes only and does not replace personalised medical or dietetic advice. Always discuss significant dietary changes with your kidney care team or renal dietitian.

        Dear My local MP ……………*name,
I feel compelled to write as I feel very strongly about this issue. I have recently become aware of a campaign started by a lady in Wakefield West Yorkshire. The “Safe Lines, Safe Lives” campaign. Anneka Murphy is a haemo dialysis patient with a central line to her heart as access for the life saving dialysis needed, until she gets a transplant.
Anneka has recently been informed the shower pouches she uses from Independence direct, that she was getting on prescription, are now stopped due to their cost.
These pouches are essential to prevent the central line from getting wet. It is national guidelines central lines must remain dry to prevent serious infection, but without the appropriate tools how are patients with a line meant to do this?
Anneka has raised this with her MP Jade Botterill who is escalating but support from other MP’s would be appreciated.
Please raise this with Wes Streeting the health secretary. Patients health is at risk of serious infection without these pouches. All patients in West Yorkshire have been now told these will no longer be issued. This is not just an isolated occurrence as it is happening in pockets all over the country.
        Please keep me informed .

        Kind regards

      • Episode 122: Home Haemodialysis a Patient’s Perspective on Dialysis at Home

What is it really like to do haemodialysis at home? How do you learn to manage your own dialysis treatment, and what are the advantages and challenges compared with receiving haemodialysis in a dialysis centre?

In this episode of Diary of a Kidney Warrior Podcast, Dee Moore is joined by kidney warrior and freelance copywriter Gemma Savory to share her extraordinary kidney journey and her experience of home haemodialysis from a patient’s perspective.

Gemma’s kidney disease was discovered unexpectedly when she was just 20 years old. Years later, her life changed dramatically following a diagnosis of bowel cancer. Cancer treatment caused her already reduced kidney function to deteriorate further, and when the cancer later spread to her lung, Gemma needed both chemotherapy and dialysis.

She began chemotherapy and haemodialysis on the same day.

Gemma openly discusses the physical and emotional impact of undergoing treatment for stage 4 cancer and kidney failure simultaneously, before explaining how taking greater control of her dialysis eventually led her towards home haemodialysis.

        The conversation explores:

        • Gemma’s kidney disease diagnosis and declining kidney function

        • Being diagnosed with bowel cancer alongside chronic kidney disease
        • Starting chemotherapy and haemodialysis on the same day
        • Coping physically and emotionally with cancer treatment and dialysis
        • What shared care in haemodialysis means
        • Learning to understand blood results, fluid removal and dialysis treatment
        • Learning to needle a fistula and becoming more involved in your own care
        • Training for home haemodialysis
        • The transition from in-centre dialysis to dialysis at home
        • What support may be available once someone begins home haemodialysis
        • Whether someone living alone can potentially dialyse at home
        • Home haemodialysis compared with in-centre haemodialysis
        • The freedom and flexibility Gemma gained from dialysing at home
        • The space, supplies and responsibility involved in bringing dialysis into your home
        • Recognising signs of low blood pressure during dialysis
        • Gemma’s experience of moving from a fistula to a tunnelled chest line
        • Her experience of performing home haemodialysis using a chest line
        • The pros and cons to consider before choosing home haemodialysis
        • The emotional and mental health impact of long-term dialysis
        • More frequent, shorter dialysis sessions and the flexibility of home treatment
        • Why becoming more involved in your dialysis care can feel empowering

For Gemma, one of the biggest benefits of home haemodialysis is flexibility.

Instead of her life having to fit around a fixed dialysis-centre schedule, home treatment gave her greater ability to fit dialysis around her life. But she is equally open about the realities: storing supplies, giving up space in your home, managing equipment and taking responsibility for aspects of your own life-sustaining treatment.

Gemma encourages anyone considering home haemodialysis to think carefully about the pros and cons for their individual circumstances, speak with their home haemodialysis team and, where possible, talk to other patients who have experience of dialysing at home.

Her final message applies whether you choose home haemodialysis or not: become as involved in your treatment as you can.

Understanding what is happening with your body and your dialysis can help you ask questions, participate in decisions and feel more empowered in your kidney care.

🎧 Listen to the full episode for an honest patient perspective on home haemodialysis, kidney failure, shared care, dialysis access and taking greater control of dialysis treatment.

Treatment options and home haemodialysis practices vary according to individual circumstances and kidney units. Speak with your kidney care team about which dialysis options may be appropriate for you.

      • Episode 121: Home Haemodialysis Explained: Who Is It For, Training, Safety & Benefits

What is home haemodialysis? Who is it suitable for? Can you dialyse at home alone? How much training is involved, and what happens if something goes wrong?

In this episode of Diary of a Kidney Warrior Podcast, Dee Moore is joined by Sister Colette Doyle, Lead Home Haemodialysis Nurse Specialist, for a practical introduction to home haemodialysis (home HD).

Colette explains what home haemodialysis involves and takes listeners through some of the questions kidney patients may have when considering whether dialysis at home could be an option for them.

Importantly, home haemodialysis does not necessarily mean you need another person living with you to perform your treatment. Colette discusses solo home haemodialysis, the safeguards that may be put in place and why individual kidney units have their own criteria, processes and protocols.

        Dee and Colette discuss:

        • What home haemodialysis is

        • Who may be suitable for home haemodialysis
        • Whether age is a barrier to dialysis at home
        • Dialysing at home with a fistula, graft or dialysis line
        • Solo home haemodialysis and dialysing without a carer
        • Safety measures for people dialysing at home
        • What support may be available if something goes wrong
        • How patients are assessed for home haemodialysis
        • Preparing your home for a dialysis machine
        • The home haemodialysis training process
        • Learning about your dialysis machine, alarms and vascular access
        • Training around work and other commitments
        • Whether someone can combine home and in-centre haemodialysis
        • Who home haemodialysis may not be suitable for
        • Space and practical considerations within the home
        • The benefits of home haemodialysis
        • Greater flexibility over when and how frequently you dialyse
        • More frequent dialysis and how some patients may feel afterwards
        • Potential disadvantages and challenges of dialysis at home
        • Storage of dialysis equipment and supplies
        • What happens if your dialysis machine develops a technical problem
        • Water or electricity interruptions during home dialysis
        • Home haemodialysis and kidney transplantation
        • Having pets when you dialyse at home
        • Common myths about home haemodialysis
        • Where kidney patients can find more information

One of the key messages from this conversation is that home haemodialysis may be an option for more people than they realise.

Colette explains that age alone should not automatically exclude someone and that, within her programme, patients may dialyse at home using different forms of vascular access. People who live alone may also potentially be able to perform solo home haemodialysis with appropriate safeguards.

The episode also looks realistically at the practicalities. A dialysis machine and supplies require space, treatment takes time, technical problems can occur and bringing dialysis into your home carries additional responsibility.

However, home haemodialysis can also offer something incredibly valuable: greater flexibility and control over how dialysis fits into your life.

If you are considering home haemodialysis, speak with your kidney care team or home haemodialysis service about the options available to you. Eligibility, training, equipment, safety procedures and support vary between kidney units and according to individual circumstances.

🎧 Listen to the full episode for a practical introduction to home haemodialysis, dialysis training, solo dialysis, vascular access, safety, benefits and the realities of dialysing at home.
