What is the connection between high blood pressure and chronic kidney disease? Why is hypertension an important kidney health issue within the Black community? And what can people do to protect both their blood pressure and their kidneys?
In this episode of Diary of a Kidney Warrior Podcast, Dee Moore is joined by Professor Ibi Erekosima, an award-winning senior nephrologist with a specialist interest in hypertension, diabetes and chronic kidney disease (CKD), for an important conversation about hypertension, kidney disease and the Black community.
Professor Ibi explains what hypertension, also known as high blood pressure, is and why knowing your blood pressure matters.
The conversation explores the prevalence of hypertension globally and examines some of the factors that can contribute to higher rates of high blood pressure within Black communities.
Dee and Professor Ibi discuss:
• What hypertension or high blood pressure means
A particularly important part of this conversation is the relationship between high blood pressure and kidney disease.
The kidneys play an important role in regulating blood pressure, while uncontrolled high blood pressure can damage the kidneys. Professor Ibi explains this connection and why hypertension and CKD can become closely intertwined.
The episode also highlights an important challenge: hypertension may not cause obvious symptoms. Someone can have high blood pressure without knowing it, making blood pressure checks and awareness particularly important.
For Black communities, this conversation goes beyond individual choices. Dee and Professor Ibi also discuss wider socioeconomic and environmental factors that can influence health and contribute to inequalities.
The message is not about blame. It is about awareness, prevention, appropriate treatment and empowering people with information about their health.
🎧 Listen to the full episode to learn more about hypertension, chronic kidney disease, high blood pressure, Black kidney health, prevention and protecting your kidneys.
If you are concerned about your blood pressure, kidney function or prescribed medication, speak with your GP, kidney team or another appropriate healthcare professional for advice based on your individual circumstances. Do not start, stop or change prescribed medication without discussing it with an appropriate healthcare professional.
Diary of a Kidney Warrior Podcast shares real stories and expert conversations to educate, empower and inspire people living with kidney disease and those who support them.
If you found this episode helpful, follow the podcast, leave a review and share it with your family, friends and community. Raising awareness of high blood pressure and kidney disease could encourage someone else to check their numbers.

Haemodialysis can feel overwhelming, particularly when you are preparing to start treatment or adjusting to life on dialysis. What can make treatment easier? How should you look after your dialysis access? And what practical things can help you manage fluid restrictions, dialysis sessions and everyday life?
In this episode of Diary of a Kidney Warrior Podcast, Dee Moore is joined by dialysis nurse Alan Trier to share practical haemodialysis tips and advice from a nurse’s perspective.
Alan explains what haemodialysis is and how the dialysis machine filters waste and excess fluid from the blood. He also discusses the importance of becoming an active member of your healthcare team, asking questions and understanding your treatment.
Dee and Alan explore practical advice including:
• Managing fluid restrictions and avoiding fluid overload
Dee also shares tips from her own experience of haemodialysis, including bringing a blanket to treatment, using a small wheeled suitcase and working with her dialysis team to manage severe cramping.
Alan’s message to people receiving dialysis is simple: there is life around dialysis. Kidney failure and haemodialysis may bring restrictions, but they do not have to stop you from living your life.
Whether you are about to start haemodialysis, are already receiving dialysis treatment, or support someone living with kidney failure, this conversation offers practical information, encouragement and insight into life on haemodialysis.

What is life like after a kidney transplant — not just one year later, but 30 years later?
In this episode of Diary of a Kidney Warrior Podcast, Dee Moore is joined by Kevin Moulton from Derbyshire, England, who shares his remarkable journey from childhood kidney failure and haemodialysis to receiving a living donor kidney transplant from his father at the age of 15.
Kevin’s kidney journey began when he was just eight years old after E. coli poisoning led to haemolytic uraemic syndrome (HUS) and kidney failure. After initially receiving haemodialysis, his kidney function stabilised enough for him to spend several years managing his condition before his kidneys deteriorated further.
At 15, during his GCSE year, Kevin returned to haemodialysis three times a week. His father was subsequently found to be a compatible living kidney donor, and in January 1995 Kevin received the kidney transplant that is still functioning 30 years later.
Kevin and Dee discuss:
• Developing kidney failure following HUS in childhood
Kevin also speaks candidly about the fear he experienced before transplant surgery, the support his family received from a renal psychologist, and the extraordinary difference transplantation made to his energy, health and quality of life.
Thirty years after receiving his father’s kidney, Kevin’s message is one of hope: everyone’s kidney journey is different, but whatever stage you are at, keep going and don’t give up.
Whether you are living with chronic kidney disease, receiving dialysis, waiting for a kidney transplant, preparing for living kidney donation or adjusting to life after transplantation, Kevin’s story offers insight, encouragement and hope.

What happens emotionally after a kidney transplant? Receiving a transplant can be life-changing, but recovery is not only physical. It can bring unexpected emotions, anxiety, guilt, fear and major changes to your sense of identity.
In Part 2 of this conversation on Diary of a Kidney Warrior Podcast, Dee Moore continues her discussion with renal psychologist Dr Emma Coyne, exploring the psychological and emotional impact of kidney transplantation and adjusting to life after transplant.
They discuss why transplant recipients can experience a mixture of happiness, sadness, anxiety and uncertainty — even when the transplant has been successful — and why there is no single “right” way to feel.
This episode explores:
• The emotional impact immediately after kidney transplant surgery
Dr Coyne also challenges the idea that receiving a kidney transplant means everything is suddenly “fixed”. Even with a functioning transplant, people may experience medication side effects, infections, anxiety or difficulties adjusting to a very different life.
For those whose transplant does not work as hoped, the conversation explores the importance of acknowledging that loss, allowing time for physical and emotional recovery, and recognising that choosing whether to pursue another transplant is an individual decision.
Whether you are preparing for a kidney transplant, recovering from transplantation, living with a kidney transplant, supporting a transplant recipient or have experienced transplant failure, this episode offers an important and compassionate look at the psychological side of transplantation.

How do you prepare psychologically for a kidney transplant when you don’t know when the call will come — or whether the transplant will actually go ahead?
In Part 1 of this two-part conversation on Diary of a Kidney Warrior Podcast, Dee Moore is joined by specialist renal clinical psychologist Dr Emma Coyne to explore the medical and psychological preparation for kidney transplantation.
Dr Coyne explains the role psychological support can play before transplant and why preparing for a kidney transplant involves much more than being medically fit for surgery.
Together, Dee and Dr Coyne discuss:
• Who may benefit from psychological support before kidney transplantation
One particularly important message is the difference between being called for a kidney transplant and being called in for the possibility of a kidney transplant. Dr Coyne explains how managing this expectation may help patients cope if, after arriving at hospital, the transplant cannot proceed.
The conversation also explores the complex emotions surrounding deceased organ donation. Dr Coyne discusses why the donor’s death and the recipient receiving a kidney should be understood as two separate events, and why excitement, fear, sadness and gratitude can all exist at the same time.
For people awaiting a deceased donor kidney, there is practical advice too — including creating a list of everything you would need to take to hospital, deciding who will support you when the call comes and understanding what may happen once you arrive.
Whether you are being assessed for a kidney transplant, already on the kidney transplant waiting list, considering living kidney donation or supporting someone preparing for transplantation, this episode offers practical information and psychological insight to help you prepare for what may lie ahead.
Content warning: This episode includes discussion of deceased organ donation and other sensitive subjects that some listeners may find difficult.
