Four months without TV and my first trip back to the big screen ends with an alien film so bad I can’t even remember its name. I ponder the baffling spelling of “Filipino” before heading on to Borneo, where a pre‑planned dive trip goes tits up and I end up sharing a dorm with a Swedish man doing something you should never do in shared accommodation (unless you're very discreet). This is when I say goodbye to the three street kids from Pushkar. I'd given one of them my old jacket, thinking that was the end of it. But the next morning, true to their word, they turned up to see me off. Having walked for half an hour just to wave goodbye. 

This isn’t one of those epic travel stories with tuk-tuks flipping off cliffs or temples in the mist. It’s quiet. Small. But it’s stayed with me for almost two decades.

Because sometimes the stuff that sticks isn’t what you expected. It’s a goodbye on a warm morning. It’s the sound of your name being shouted by someone who should’ve forgotten it. It’s some tiny strips of paper with your email address scribbled on them, disappearing into little hands you'll never see again.

What started as a laid-back sightseeing day in Udaipur quickly spiralled into one of the most uncomfortable (and traumatic) toilet emergencies of my entire trip. One minute I’m being shown around the City Palace and casually chatting about Hindu mythology and spiritual lake blessings…the next I’m gripping the back of Hassan's motorbike, clenching like my life depends on it. The whole time praying to Ganesh that my sphincter can hold out. What followed was a frantic dash through the streets of India, a truly humbling squat toilet experience, and a newfound vow to always listen to my gut, literally!
