George Lucas Wanted to Make Star Trek Before Star Wars

A recently resurfaced 1977 interview with director Philip Kaufman reveals a fascinating piece of sci-fi history: George Lucas originally wanted to buy the rights to Star Trek. While it is widely known that Lucas unsuccessfully tried to acquire the rights to Flash Gordon before creating his own galaxy far, far away, Kaufman noted that his good friend Lucas had actively inquired about purchasing the Star Trek property first. Lucas's affinity for the series ultimately influenced the massive galactic governments and world-building seen in Star Wars.
