DIE-ALOGUE

Content warning: today’s episode covers sensitive topics including pedophilia and sexual abuse, please take care while listening. If you need support for sexual abuse, please visit: https://www.rainn.org/about-national-sexual-assault-telephone-hotline

I watched Cheer Season 2 and decided: We need to talk about Jerry. Our beloved athlete known for his inspiring “mat talks” has had a fall from grace after being sued for child sexual abuse and subsequently charged with
attempting to receive child pornography, using the internet to "persuade, induce, and entice" a minor, and traveling from Texas to Florida "for the purpose of engaging in illicit sexual conduct" with a minor, using, persuading, inducing, and enticing a minor "to engage in sexually explicit conduct for the purpose of producing a visual depiction of such conduct."

I invited past guests (and current friends) Dr. Shiloh and Dr. Scott, of the LA Not So Confidential Podcast. Learn more about them and their show here:https://www.la-not-so-confidential.com/

In addition to their current roles as forensic psychologists, the doctors bring past experience working with sex offenders to help us process the complicated feelings around Jerry’s arrest and alleged crimes.

This is a tough conversation and I am grateful to Dr. Shiloh and Dr. Scott for their professional insight and ability to explore the nuance in this complex situation.

For a little levity, stick around to the very end of the episode to hear my favorite scene from CHEER Season 2. It’s the end of Episode 4 called “Hell Week.” Stunning cinematography but since you can’t see that, you can hear and enjoy the great music and audio clips.

Let's go back to 1970's Chicago when the mob ruled the courts. What could go wrong? I had an incredible conversation with the Pulitzer Prize winning journalist, Jake Halpern.

Jake is the host of the new investigative podcast, Mob Land, which just dropped this week! The story centers around Bob Cooley - a mafia "fixer" turned FBI cooperator. Jake and I get into whether or not Bob can be trusted, what justice is or isn't — especially when corruption exists — and I think I stun Jake into silence with a Real Housewives analogy.

Jake is an excellent storyteller making this a highly enjoyable conversation. Listen, enjoy, then go check out Mob Land!

Ethical, transparent and accessible. Is that what comes to mind when you think of private law practice? Me either. But the work my guest today is doing, is trying to change all that.

Laurie Gilbert left her work as a Prosecutor in New York City, where she tried everything from fraud to murder cases. In fact her last case was highly unique in that it took three times to get the defendant an attempted murder conviction despite the plethora of evidence and solid witnesses. This was the trial of Christopher Prince in Queens, New York.

She now sits on the board of Legal Entrepreneurs for Justice - a legal incubator, designed to operate in a totally new way. I loved learning about this and was thrilled when Laurie shared that these are cropping up across the Unites States, with about 70- 80 in existence. You can check and see if your state has a "legal incubator" here:

https://www.americanbar.org/groups/delivery_legal_services/initiatives_awards/program_main/

Listen as Laurie shares the many ways these new models of practicing law are helping level the playing field.

We round out the conversation with some good ol' Elizabeth Holmes commentary, and Laurie leaves us with her personal thoughts on justice. You can learn more about Legal Entrepreneurs for Justice and Laurie's consulting work via the links below:

Content warning: Today's episode deals with kidnapping and abuse of minors and has some harsh language in one part. Please listen with care.

Today's big question: Is it ever ok to do the wrong thing, for the right reason? We're talking about vigilantes on the show today.

My guest, Sam Walker, is a multi-award winning journalist, broadcaster and podcaster. Her show, American Vigilante, is about a man named KC. KC is the American Vigilante. A hugely complex, intelligent, contradictory man who could save your life but end it too. He leads a group of violent men standing on the blurred line between right and wrong, between revenge and redemption. A man you want on your side when it all falls apart. American Vigilante is true crime, but so much more. It’s saving abducted children, it’s stepping beyond the law. It’s rescue missions, assassination attempts and last-gasp protection. It’s all the stuff you hope never comes to you, until it does.

We delve into the ethics around vigilantism, the American spirit that seems to support this rogue work, and we find ourselves going around and around the question landing somewhere in that murky gray area, which should really be familiar by now.

Listen to American Vigilante wherever you get your podcasts! https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/american-vigilante/id1583938816

A DIE-ALOGUE first: CRYPTO CURRENCY. Welcome Sheona Macdonald, director of the new true crime documentary, DEAD MAN’S SWITCH: A CRYPTO MYSTERY. Streams on Discovery Plus Thursday, December 23.

Don’t worry if you don’t know a lot (or anything) about crypto - at its heart, this is a true crime story complete with fraud, a mysterious death, and a suspiciously specific will! Sheona and I have an interesting conversation about what drives fraudsters and how powerful greed is.

Listen to the interview then check out the documentary, DEAD MAN’S SWITCH: a Crypto Mystery. Discovery Plus on 12/23!

By the way, happy holidays! We have one more episode next week before a little winter hiatus. Keep up with me on instagram: @diealoguepod

CONTENT WARNING: This episode deals with topics of sexual abuse against minors.

As you prepare to gather with loved ones this holiday, think about how you might have some difficult, but very important conversations., particularly with the kids and teens in your life about online safety. Perhaps you're like me and you go back and forth between wanting to educate myself on this topic and, also wanting to stick my fingers in my ears and pretend it doesn't effect me or my family because the subject is so dark and so scary.

Luckily for all of us, today's guest, Roo Powell, is an expert in this area. Roo is a writer, an advocate, founder of a non-profit, SOSA (safe from sex abuse online) and the subject of the new limited series on Discovery Plus called "Undercover Underage."

We discuss how Roo transforms herself from a 38 year old mother of three to a teenage girl online, in hopes of obtaining useful information from online sex predators. She works closely with law enforcement and has a tight protocol to ensure that her team's work is useful should it be needed in court.

This show is fast paced and features her team who work tirelessly to aid law enforcement in their quest to get these predators offline (and in jail if needed), and her non-profit also consults with tech companies on ways to make their sites safer!

Our conversation covers a lot of ground and I think it will leave you feeling more hopeful than not.
You will learn so much on this one but you will also enjoy it because Roo is so great.

Share this with any guardians and parents you know so we can start having better conversations about inappropriate online behavior , apps to avoid and red flags.
