July 18, 2016 David Fincher – Se7en
Se7en is a psychological thriller that grabs from the get-go and doesn’t let go. It’s so affecting, so dark, so gruesome and extreme that the film may make you see things that aren’t even there. With excellent performances, a rock-solid script and masterful direction, Se7en is as engrossing a movie today as it was twenty years ago. It has staked its claim as one of the best films of the 90’s.

July 11, 2016 David Fincher – Alien³
Alien 3 is a film. David Fincher directed it. It’s…not great…
Hmmm…it’s…definitely a full-length feature film in the Alien franchise. That is a fact.

July 03, 2016 David Fincher – Prologue
David Fincher is the next director we’ll be covering on Direct. He got his start in music videos and, like Scott and Cameron before him, burst onto the scene with face-huggers in Alien3. From Fight Club to Zodiac to Gone Girl, Fincher has been thrilling audiences for more than two decades, with plenty of style along the way. It should be a fun ride.

May 23, 2016 Guillermo del Toro – Epilogue

May 15, 2016 Guillermo del Toro – Crimson Peak
Guillermo del Toro’s most recent film is a deep, creepy, personal story with ghosts in it. With excellent performances from top actors, strong metaphorical overtones, and face stabs, this film may be best viewed in context to his previous movies. Eric and Levi had differing opionions on the film, but could agree on one thing—it is inexcusably del Toro.

May 09, 2016 Guillermo del Toro – Pacific Rim
Guillermo del Toro’s Pacific Rim is a stupid fun action flick with big monsters punching big robots in their big faces. It’s a fun, if inconsistent ride through a detailed and expansive mythos. What it lacks in story, character, and (sometimes) logic, it makes up for in PUNCHING MONSTERS IN THE FACE!!!* Monster + Punch = FACE!!!
*Monsters were punched in the face in the making of this movie.

May 01, 2016 Guillermo del Toro – Hellboy II: The Golden Army
Hellboy II is a sequel with teeth (and tooth faeries). Guillermo del Toro’s follow up to his 2004 comic book flick has a little more of everything. Tons of practical effects, big action set pieces, and big choices for a lot of characters. But do the cartooney aspects outweigh the rip-roaring fun of the movie?
Light up come Cubans, listen to Barry Manilow, and tun a cop car into grass. It’s Hellboy time!

April 25, 2016 Guillermo del Toro – Pan’s Labyrinth
Pan’s Labyrinth is a mythical and mystical juxtaposition of two engaging universes. In one, a brooding tyrant rules with a cruel and iron fist – representing, perhaps, one of the greatest villains in movie history. In the other, a cadre of beautifully grotesque creatures guide a young girl through a world falling apart. This sister film to del Toro’s The Devil’s Backbone is a master work of cinema, and in many ways may be Guillermo’s opus. Join us next week for Hellboy II: The Golden Army.

April 18, 2016 Guillermo del Toro – Hellboy
Hellboy is a detailed, wild ride that appeals directly to Levi and Eric’s geeky sensibilities. It also represents a unique and outstanding entry into the comic book genre. Plus, there are plenty of del Toro-isms to go around. Lovecraftian monsters? Check. Catholic symbolism? Check. Glowsticks? Check. Hellboy is a big story that goes down smooth. Bravo, Guillermo.
