We’re back with another halfisode on the 1987 Best Original Song category. The Mikes were little kids hearing these songs on the radio, which would become the soundtrack of their adult subconscious's. We mine all of that dark psychological territory as well as give you a deep dive into 80's fashions in this episode. For what we may lack as music criticisms, we make up with too much information and outfit tracking.
The Oscar performances weren’t available on Youtube, but that didn’t stop us from clicking away. One could get lost on several wondrous tangents on this magical website and get lost we did. We begin with Dirty Dancing and the song that launched a thousand parodies, “(I’ve Had) The Time of My Life.” You know the song is good when its first two words are in parentheses, folks.
There are some typical Oscar caliber, Oscar-type nominations in this 5, and then there’s a few eclectic choices, or perhaps “sell-out” is a better word. Still, we have fun heckling the music videos, gushing over the performance quality of the lead singers, and talking big hair, Casio keyboards, and mandatory saxophone solos. It was a fun decade of excess, crime, weird butt jeans, and drug addiction, encapsulated perfectly by these 5 nominees. You’re welcome.
