Kellian York has big plans for the brothel he's inherited in Loving, Texas. Believing she has a responsibility to protect and redeem the women formerly in Kellian's employ, Annie soon realizes she's made a terrible mistake inviting them, and especially Kellian, into her home. Unsure whether he's trying to torture her or seduce her, Kellian's striking presence is beginning to rouse the passionate nature she's tried to hide. Annie decides to take her fate, and Kellian's, into her own hands, and learns a few tricks of the trade from her boarders, before turning the tables on Kellian. Will the saint redeem the sinner? Or the sinner seduce the saint?

Dont Judge A Book By Its Cover!!
I took a chance on this book because I was looking for something a little different. This book has been available for a while with no reviews and to be honest I wasn't sure it would be worth my time but it turned out to be a delightful listen. .
It takes place in a small town in Texas where everyone knows everyone. The main characters Kellian and Annie are total opposites - he is a "sinner" and she is a "saint". They begin their unusual courtship disliking each other's "values" while attempting to change each other to their way of life.
This book has a very relatable aspect in regards to first impressions and judging people. We can't deny that we are all guilty of criticizing, critiquing, and wanting to change people to conform to our "standards". It deals with this issue with sincerity, humor, grace, and repentance.
If you are looking for a book that is very sweet, witty. has great characters, has more romance than sex, and has a good message then give this one a try. I'm glad I did.

    Title: Althea
    Author: Madeleine Robins
    Narrator: Lauren Irwin
    Format: Unabridged
Length: 9 hrs and 2 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 10-22-13
    Publisher: Audible Studios
Ratings: 3 of 5 out of 4 votes
    Genres: Romance, Historical
    Publisher's Summary:
In her fathers household Althea Ervine was used to having the running of things - until her father disowned her (again) and Althea fled to her sisters home in London. For the first time in her life Althea gave herself up to the gaiety of a purely social life, to the theatre and parties and the admiration of young men.
The most ardent of these young men was Edward Pendarly, and Althea thought she could like him very much. But the infuriating, fascinating Sir Tracy Calendar hinted that Edwards intentions were not all they should be. But why did Sir Tracy care, and for that matter, what were Sir Tracys intentions?
    Editorial Reviews:
In this modern society romance for young adults, Althea - narrated with genteel girl-like glee by Englishwoman Lauren Irwin - our plucky and pouty protagonist, Althea, is disowned by her overbearing father. With few options, she moves in with her wealthy sister in London, where she quickly takes to the towns high society scene and gay nightlife.
A frequenter of many engagements, Althea meets many fine gentlemen, yet Edward Pendarly is perhaps the most intriguing. But there are others, most notably Sir Tracy Calendar, who secretly pine for Altheas heart.
An homage to the classic Regency romances, the listener will perhaps stick with this mostly formulaic story simply to find out: "Who will end up with whom?"
    Members Reviews:
Predictable romance with slightly more real characters
Althea runs away from her father, stays with her sister in Town, and tries to figure out the intricacies of Society.
The plot is extremely predictable, Althea's plottings get punished while those of her love interest don't, and it relies on Althea's naivete to the point of holding the idiot ball several times.
However. The characters are more fully realized than many romance novels, the secondary characters are wonderfully real (Althea's empty-headed married sister actually has a good head for society, and her troubles with her husband are the all-too-real troubles of a couple who let money run through their fingers in different ways and so blame each other), and I would rather read Madeleine Robins's combination of Regency and modern sensibilities than nearly any other romance novel.
The romance is of the PG/PG-13 variety, and while the plot is predictable, there are a few suspenseful moments. The biggest flaw is the abrupt ending, which is common in romance novels.
If you're a fan of straight Regency romance (no mystery plot, etc.), you wouldn't go wrong to pick this one up.
    Complicated...
Althea was complicated, characters got picked up mid-way and got major story lines, the couple was fighting when I thought they were just bantering...he was a little arrogant I thought but generally likable. Frankly, I think the author could have made this into 2 books and it would have been a lot neater. I read 2 other of Ms. Robins' books at the same time and I enjoyed them thoroughly (Heiress Companion, Dear Jenny) but this one was a little work to get through.
    Did not disappointe!
Totally enjoyed this book. Madeleine Robins is a favorite.
Her ealier books are worth reading as well as the current series.
    just they way you expected
It was a nice story and easy read but no surprises or really any thing to make you want to get back to the story
    A disappointing book
Ms Robins used the same words too many times: alacrity, fustian, tiger...
The action was always talked about among the characters.

The last time Olivia Martingale saw Menwin it was in Brussels on the eve of Waterloo. She had loved him then, but her love was not returned. Instead she yielded to the insistent Lord John Temperer, married him, and was left a widow.
With the war at last over, visiting Johns family seemed like a good idea. But Johns brother the Duke disliked her; Johns mother wanted to match-make for her and into the middle of all this walked Menwin, filling the room with his presence. Olivia felt the old attraction rising again - until Menwin looked right through her as if she was not even worth noticing.
    Editorial Reviews:
In the modern Regency romance Lady John, performed as a refined British lady would by Charlotte Cole, we follow the story of a recently widowed woman, Olivia Martingale, who goes to live with the wealthy family of her now deceased husband.
In this strange and invigorating new setting, the spunky and bubbly Olivia meets Lord Menwin, a handsome man who is most dreadfully rude to her. But perhaps Lord Menwin will turn out to be like the insecure schoolyard boy who picks on the girl because he fancies her.
A period piece full of love, longing, misunderstandings, and manners thats a very easy listen, aka, Jane Austen light.

What did you like best about this story?
The story is well written and very interesting. It's not just a fluffy piece that solely focusses on how people felt when the were near each other or gazing at each other across the room. It is an enjoyable submersion into the 1800s life.

    German-occupied Brussels, Belgium. December 1915
Rose Culver is in grave danger. For months the Red Cross head nurse has been aiding Allied soldiers caught behind enemy lines, helping them flee into neutral Netherlands. It's only a matter of time until she's caught. Which makes it the wrong time to fall in love with a handsome German military doctor as devoted to the sanctity of human life as she is.
The Great War has caused Dr. Herman Geoff to question everything he once believed. He knows Rose has been hiding British soldiers in her hospital - he's even treated some of them, refusing to go against his own hippocratic oath. As a doctor, he admires Rose's skill and conviction. As a man, he can no longer deny his attraction to her. But when Rose is arrested for treason, Herman must choose between love for her and duty to his country

    I couldn't put it down.
I fell in love with Rose and Herman. I read the book in one evening. Couldn't put it down. Excellent story telling
    Pleasant Read
    3.5 Stars
Set in Belgium during 1915, Aiding the Enemy centers around Rose Culver, a British nurse for the Red Cross whoâs been working in a German-occupied hospital. Rose is patient, kind, and has a real passion for what she does. Her patients always come first, no matter what their country of origin. She patches up battered soldiers with no regard for her own well-beingâmany times, forgetting to eat and getting little sleep in the process.
Dr. Herman Geoff is a German surgeon working at the hospital with Rose. Heâs attracted to her caring manner and her superior nursing skills. Very early in the book, itâs obvious to everyone except Rose that Dr. Geoff has more than a passing interest in her. For her part, Rose is also attracted to him, but she tries to maintain the expected level of professionalism between them.
When Dr. Geoff finds out Rose has been helping British soldiers escape back to their homelands, he looks the other wayâuntil she is arrested for treason.
*************Spoiler Alert: DO NOT READ THIS UNLESS YOU WANT TO KNOW WHAT HAPPENS. ************
Okay, donât say I didnât warn you. Here we go.
You still have a chance to look away. No? Okay.
Dr. Geoff decides he just canât be without Rose. So, he comes up with a brilliant plan to bust her out of jail, marry her, and escape to the Netherlands, which is a neutral country. Rose vehemently objects because she feels heâs marrying her for the wrong reasons. Also, she doesnât want to risk his life by involving him in her escape. Eventually, he convinces her and they flee together.
They have two close calls where theyâre almost captured, but in the end, they make it out safely. I thought Rose was a little hard-headed and frankly, nave to keep running away from Dr. Geoff, but other than that, I found her to be a likeable heroine. Dr. Geoff seemed pretty one-dimensional to me until he had to amputate his brotherâs arm. Then, I got a glimpse into the tragic emotions he was battling. One thing I did notice was that there wasnât a lot of history in here. The story mostly centered around Roseâs romance with Dr. Geoff. If you like historical romances, this one is pretty good.
    War Girls 3
I like war romances. The thought of two people finding love in a time of fear and danger really appeals to me so I was quite looking forward to reading this novella.

    Publisher's Summary:
As a spirit of change overturns Europe's old order, Elzelina Versfelt enters her own age of revolution. Married as a romantic young girl to a man who wanted only her money, Elza refuses to be chained any longer. Leaving Amsterdam, she flees to France - where the old rules no longer apply, debauchery is not a sin... and nothing is forbidden. This stunning novel blends history with the language of the heart to tell a sensuous story of an era of upheaval.
    Members Reviews:
Trying hard to find something good to say.
This was bad. From the vague descriptions of possible reincarnation that went nowhere to weird sex scenes, this was just a strange book. Initially Elza dresses like her dead brother Charles to comfort her mentally troubled mother. Then she dresses like Charles to travel safely, etc until she developes what I guess is a bit of a conflicted identity. That's one storyline. Right off the bat, Elza abandons her children to her cold and politically ambitious husband. That took away any possibility for sympathy for the "heroine". I've tried to find something positive to say..I did like Mechelle, a gallant General of the French Army who becomes an obsession for Elza, but that's it. I only stuck it out and finished the book because I was sure she'd do something climactic with the reincarnation story or whatever she was hinting at. That did not happen.
The narrator was not pleasant to hear. I felt like I was listening to a book club reading.
My recommendation on this one is to save your money.
very different but I loved it
quirky & wonderful, wish the narrator was European though, her (almost californian) american accent didn't fit the time or story
Part of a series, but could be read alone
This is the first book that I've read in the Numinous World series and the first of Jo Graham's novels as well. I had no expectations going into the read and was happy to have enjoyed the tale as much as I did.
The book revolves around Elzelina Versfelt during the mid to late 1700's, who finds herself in a string of situations that tests her character and her will. Elzelina is a strong-willed female who bends and shifts with the various fortunes and misfortunes that come her way. She is vastly flawed and unapologetically so, but that is what makes her a realistic and likable lead. I enjoyed the way this tale unfolded. It is passionate and dangerous as well as it is sensual and taboo. This is not a fluffy romance because the main character does explore her sexuality, sleeping with many men and a woman. Also there are a couple of strong situations that might offend some people. However Graham writes it in a way that you understand the severity of the situations, but you also don't feel like it's distasteful or excessive.
Overall, I enjoyed this book a lot. There were some parts that could've used some tightening in the plot or the flow of the scene, but in it's entirety, the tale is beautiful and slightly tragic.
    Narration
    Narrator: Arika Rapson
    Performance: 4/5
    Speed: 1.25x
Rapson did a great job with the narration, her voice was appropriate for the main character whose POV is throughout the book. There were a lot of characters in this book and Rapson was great with distinction and consistency between the various characters.

    Members Reviews:
    sweet short story.
I found this novella in the historical romances and was not expecting the Christian influence. Since this is so far from anything I would have purposely purchased I found it a little.... disconcerting. yet it did not influence my enjoyment of the story at all.
I loved the characters of Asiri and Braydon (I listened rather then read this book so my spellings could be all wrong.) and found them easy to get to know. Short, sweet, all tied up...
    NARRATOR : Excellent!
CREDITWORTHY? : Absolutely not... it costs less then a credit! So buy it!
HEAT FACTOR: non existent! ice cold!
    A Sweet Romance
Would you listen to A Heart's Home again? Why?
Yes I could listen to this again. I listen to audio books as I work around the house. I use two blue tooth speakers one I can carry around and another that is a tall speaker. They both help me to hear my audiobooks easily. So yes I would listen to this book again. I'd also like to add that this book has 27 reviews on Amazon and most of the time those reviews transfer to the audio book. I'm not sure why they didn't this time.
What other book might you compare A Heart's Home to and why?
I don't read a lot of historical books these days, so I can't compare it to anything. But it is a sweet romance and it seemed to suit the time period well.
    Which scene was your favorite?
SPOILER ALERT!!I think in all books one of my favorite spots is when the characters realize they are falling in love. I really loved when Braddock realized that he was in love with the woman that was supposed to marry his brother.
Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?
The book was very entertaining and i would easily listen to another novel by Laura Marshall.
    Any additional comments?
I'd just like to say that the reader also did a very good job. She made the characters believable and I would also listen to other novels narrated by her.

    A great story.
I enjoyed the story of the two women and their experience during World War II. At times some of the story seemed to be missing. The author generally does an excellent job telling this exceptional tale. It is definitely worth reading and am sure the story would be an enjoyable experience.
