    Required for a class
The book was required for a German class - but it was funny and well written. I'll keep it for my grandchildren.

    Publisher's Summary:
Jennings, As Usual is one of a series of 25 books by Anthony Buckeridge. The Jennings stories originated in a series of radio plays for the BBCs Childrens Hour, which proved so popular they spawned this delightful series of books. The tales make liberal use of Buckeridge's inventive schoolboy slang ("fossilised fish hooks!," "crystallised cheesecakes!," and others). Published between 1950 and 1989, these books were favorites among a vast assortment of kids all over the world. Jennings Goes to School and Jennings Again! were adapted for radio by Anthony Buckeridge and read by Stephen Fry, and Mark Williams (Aurthor Weasley in the Harry Potter films), recorded an abridged version of Jennings Little Hut, all produced by the BBC. Loved by kids and adults alike, the Jennings books were translated into several languages and have sold over six million worldwide. Described as Harry Potter without magic, but funnier, and P.G. Wodehouse for kids, youll want to check out the other titles in this series available from Post Hypnotic Press.

Great third entry into the George series
This was another favorite read aloud for my fifth grade students and my own children, ages 5 and 8. Hopefully there are more books to come in the series as some things are left unresolved in the plot.
In this book, George and his friend Annie are starting middle school. Annie's father Eric, a scientist, has just been named to a math professorship at Foxbridge University (Cambridge's doppleganger in this fictional world). He has also been put in charge of the experiments at the Large Hadron Collider. How one scientist is supposed to be in charge of Mars rovers, the LHC, the Cambridge math department, and the guardian of the world's most powerful computer (quantum no less) searching for life around the universe, I have no idea, but it's fiction and he must be some sort of superhuman scientist. Anyway, the children readers don't pick up on this.
In this book, Eric's old professor, the original creator of Cosmos along with Graham Reeper and Eric, makes his appearance. He is upset that Eric has used Cosmos to go to the moon and gets photographed by a satellite. He demands Eric be examined by the Order of Science in order to determine if he is a worthy guardian of Cosmos. A secretive group of anti-scientists makes its appearance. They are out to convince the world that the LHC experiments are dangerous. They have various reasons for not wanting the experiments to succeed which are revealed eventually in the book. Without giving anything away, I'll say I found their reasons rather far fetched. Frankly the LHC just isn't going to accomplish much of anything that they seemed worried about. The Hawkings really kind of overdo things here. But I guess they just wanted to impress children with how great the LHC is.
Annie becomes infatuated with an older boy at her school, Vincent, who is a skateboarding karate kid. This makes George jealous, although the book kind of tip toes around the whole issue and never really resolves it. From an adult's perspective I found this whole crush thing rather odd more than anything. It sort of comes out of nowhere in the series and will hopefully be ended in the next book if the Hawkings write one. To go from George being her best friend for years to suddenly swooning over a new never before seen character George had never heard of before just seemed too big a leap the way they did it. That situation needed far more story development to make it believable. Once again, though, the children hearing the book read to them went right along with this plot development without thinking anything was amiss. The point of Vincent seems to be to provide the lesson to readers that stereotypical athletic cool kids can also be into science, sort of like Emmett 's character in the second book was there to show that stereotypical computer geeks are cool people too. Meh. That part of the book doesn't impress me.
However, the science in this book is once again stellar. This book dips into quantum mechanics and the big bang.

Great story but still a duplicate
Where does Young Sherlock Holmes 2: Red Leech rank among all the audiobooks youve listened to so far?
I foung it quite entertaining, and engaging. I was very concerned to find out it's the same story as "Rebel Fire" by the same author, especially since I was impressed enough by this story and it's predecessor, "Death Cloud" to purchace that version as well. I'm not a young reader, unless you call 60+ young, but as a lofelong Holmes fan, I'm delighted with Andrew Lane's stories. They are well-written, full of great descriptions and lots of adventures.
What was one of the most memorable moments of Young Sherlock Holmes 2: Red Leech?
The ability of young Sherlock to find his way out of trouble, just as interestingly as he finds his way into it.
Have you listened to any of Dan Stevenss other performances before? How does this one compare?
No, but I will look for him in the future.
    Any additional comments?
Just remember, "Rebel Fire" and this book are the same story, they just have different readers.
    Young Sherlock
What did you love best about Young Sherlock Holmes 2: Red Leech?
The adventure that shaped him to what he became in adulthood. I hope Andrew Lane will write more stories about young Sherlock.
What was one of the most memorable moments of Young Sherlock Holmes 2: Red Leech?
The escape from the clutches of the cougar.
Have you listened to any of Dan Stevenss other performances before? How does this one compare?
Yes, he is an excellent narrator. He has a very distinctive voice and very good reader. I've listened to books that I will normally not read and ended up reading books he narrated either in audible or audio books.
If you were to make a film of this book, what would be the tag line be?
    NONE.
    Any additional comments?
Please bring more of Dan Stevens' narrated books in audible or audio book.
Fascinating, good follow-up to "Death Cloud".
Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?
Yes, this is a good story on it's own ; but is even better when read/listen to after the 1st in the series.
Who was your favorite character and why?
Sherlock Holmes, Andrew Lane takes AC Doyle's character and shows how he became
What does Dan Stevens bring to the story that you wouldnt experience if you just read the book?
Dan brings the characters to life, with the separate voices he uses. When you read the books some times all the characters don't feel as alive.
Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?
    yes

    My daughter likes book
    Fun read-aloud book
I've read this book to two of my grandchildren. We have all thoroughly enjoyed the silliness of the story. The subtle underlying context gives a real poignancy to the story.
    A touching, yet hilarious story
Reason for Reading: I am quite fond of David Almond as an author. He reminds me of Roald Dahl with his mixture of humour and darkness but he isn't so obvious as Dahl.
This certainly is a quite a beautiful story. Using metaphors and imagery of flight and birds to help a father and daughter overcome the grief from the death of the mother makes for a touching story. On the surface we have a silly, whimsical, humorous story of a dad who is turning into a bird so he can win the Great Human Bird Competition, right down to living on bugs and worms and building a huge nest in the middle of the kitchen floor. Underneath the story is about a man who literally looses his mind when his wife dies and becomes obsessed with birds while the daughter takes on the parental role of looking after him, to see him through this rough patch.
The story is hilarious with the antics of dad; then enter Auntie Doreen and her baking dumplings as a cure for everything that ails one and throwing them when it doesn't work. There is a riot of colour and silliness when the Great Human Bird Competition begins and we see and watch all the other contestants as they try to fly over the river to win money in all sorts of contraptions and get ups. But there is a small darkness beneath everything that gradually lightens throughout the story. The mom's death is only barely even referred to; the words death and die are never used. Underlying the dad's silly behaviour is his grief, to the astute reader, and underneath the daughter's looking after her dad is the need to know he is still there for her. They both need to know that though mom is gone they still have each other. Through the use of birds, flight, metaphors and other references to going up they let their grief go and one can even feel a religiousness in the upward/skyward theme if one's thoughts turn that way. A touching, yet hilarious story.
joy from the ashes of grief
Lizzie's a bright, independent girl who gets her self up in the morning, gets dressed, makes tea and toast, and calls her dad down to breakfast. But dad drags. Dad droops. And when asked what his plans are for the day while she's at school dad announces that he's going to fly like a bird and enter the human bird competition. Suddenly we are faced with a role reversal of a responsible parent-like child and a child-like parent. What would cause this reversal only becomes obvious by the lack, and no mention of, Lizzie's mother. This is made clear a few chapters in when Lizzie's Aunt Doreen drops by to see to how Lizzie and her dad are getting along.
