My daughter loved this book

My daughter loved this book! As a parent I am not sure what I loved most about it.

1st - This chapter book is great for struggling readers, kids who are still trying to find their love of reading, or any kid looking for a good book.

2nd - The characters are relate-able normal kids doing everyday things.

3rd - This entire series features black kids, a way under represented group in the literature world in non-history or 'special topics' books.

4th - The topics in this book help kids understand they are not alone in body image or bullying issues in the classroom. Each book in the series deals with a different real world topic that is present in these kids lives.

This book was given as a gift to a young friend on her eighth birthday, but

I did do a lot of research before I purchased this book. My young friend is reading a book a week and writing a report. I was told her eyes lit up when she saw her books, which included "Halfway to Perfect: A Dyamonde Daniel Book." I wanted her to have the entire series of the Dyamonde Daniel books. I thank you for writing this book.

I bought all four books in the series. Great for teaching "characterization" with my third graders. I would highly recommend this book!

I like the way Ellieâs faith is portrayed throughout the book and how genuine it feels whenever Ellie is praying or thinking about God and her relationship with him.

I like the way this book is done

I like the way this book is done. It is a very interesting way to do a biography. There are maps, and names and terms at the bottom of the pages to further help the students understand the material. The paper is not white and easy on the eyes. In the back of the book is a list of people who sailed on the Mayflower and what they did for a living. There is also a picture of the boat inside and out. I think this makes the biography much more interesting for children. The Accelerated Reader level is a 7.1.

Outstanding Science Fiction for Grades 4-8

First things first... I LOVED this book! The Planet Thieves is pure science fiction - set on a space ship, fighting aliens, far in the future. You don't find many books like this for the MG crowd. And this one is a page-turner from start to finish. As a girl who grew up watching every incarnation of Star Trek (though Next Generation and Voyager are my favorites), I felt right at home in this book. Dan Krokos taps into established elements of the genre - we spend a lot of time on "the bridge" and the characters even use tractor beams! The Planet Thieves made my nerdself sing happy songs.

Okay, enough praise - let's get to the book itself. The Planet Thieves follows Mason Stark, a 13 year old cadet. He's about halfway through the process of training to become a member of Earth Space Command (think: Starfleet Academy). As part of the learning process, cadets spend the summer aboard an actual ESC vessel. Everything's going well until the Tremist make an appearance. Apparently, humans have only made contact with one alien race at this point (the year is approximately 2800). The Tremist and humans have been at war for over 60 years, each desperate to claim and colonize the only other inhabitable planet in the galaxy.

This space adventure is so full of exciting plot twists that I have to stop the summary there. Let's just say that the Earth ship is holding more than just officers and cadets... and the Tremist want what's on board.

The plot of The Planet Thieves is fast-paced and completely engrossing. There is a palpable sense of danger and every character is at risk. I especially love how the main characters face one obstacle after another. Just when I thought the primary conflict was wrapping up, a new one would emerge that was equally compelling. This combination of factors kept me reading into the wee hours, way past my bed time!

Oh - and did I mention that there are Space Wizards in this book!?!? Yep.

Space. Wizards.

Story of hardship and hope.

This wonderful surprise of a book deserves a 5 Star. It tells the story of a poor l4 year old girl who must interrupt her schooling to work on her family's farm. One day at the market while selling produce, she is approached by an American woman who buys a basket from her and asks for more when she returns in 3 weeks. The story is about the frustration of trying to fill the order and what happens.. The writer conveys the feelings of the girl extremely well. I recommend it highly.

Engaging, masterfully written for 1st time author!

From the first chapter to the last, it is a smooth, easy read which masterfully depicts life of a 10 year old farm girl in the Uyger region of China. This should be a 'must read' for school age children to help them see how tough it is for children in foreign countries and to measure how good they have it here.

The author shows how even at a young age, the hope and aspirations that arise for the young girl come from a simple purchase of a vine basket from an American woman at the farmers market. It also shows that there are obstacles that get thrown at you in life and although you cannot anticipate them, you can be strong and find ways to get through them. Such is life.

Excellent book - I highly recommend it.

Beautifully Written

I just finished Josanne La Valley's book. It is beautiful and so well written. I had a chance today to hear her speak in person. She expresses the precarious political position of the Uyghur people so well. I love that the relationship between Mehrigul and her father echo what the larger Uyghur culture must face in their dealings with the Han Chinese around them.

But thankfully La Valley does not dwell on politics but rather focuses on the personal story of her main character's struggle to find a voice and to take a stand in determining her own fate. Definitely worth the read!
