I was given H.E. Marshalls Our Island Story at Christmas 1936 and Ive still got that copy. It was a direct inspiration for me in my career as a historian. (Antonia Fraser)

good for children under 10; not for adults
Would you say that listening to this book was time well-spent? Why or why not?
No. I was hoping for essentially a brief history. It is that but the content and tone are geared for children. The publisher notes that the author was inspired by her children's questions but it should note that the book was written to not only address those questions but to explicitly address them for children. The book was originally written in 1905 and it is interesting to hear for how very differently ideas and concepts were presented, with a good deal of patriotism spiced with pride that is lacking in much of today's works. However, it does get a bit tedious after a while. As an historical oddment, for nostalgia, or for children, this book is all right, but otherwise, better to give it a miss.
What did you like about the performance? What did you dislike?
the male voice is a bit oily

    Publisher's Summary:
Winner of the Scott ODell Award for Historical Fiction and the California Young Reader Medal, Graham Salisbury injects his books with the exotic color of his native Hawaii.
Continuing the story begun in Under the Blood-Red Sun, House of the Red Fish returns to Honolulu one year after the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor. Thirteen-year-old Japanese American Tomi Nakaji must struggle to support his family after the arrest of his father and grandfather.
    Critic Reviews:
"It is not necessary to have read the first book, as the author seamlessly brings his audience up to date. Give this to readers who enjoyed Rodman Philbrick's The Young Man and the Sea, another story with an ocean setting and a fiercely determined boy's coming of age." (School Library Journal)
"Many readers, even those who don't enjoy historical fiction, will like the portrayal of the work and the male camaraderie." (Booklist)

    Great quality. Fast shipping

    WWII experience in Hawaii
A great book that covers WWII in Hawaii and how it impacted local Japanese families. A wonderful tale of how a Japanese family survived and conquered a quest.
    Salisbury always delights.
I always love Graham's books. They take you right to Hawaii and show it to you through the eyes of the characters. His use of language is nicely colloquial. He's a fun read.

    Title: Alchemy and Meggy Swann
    Author: Karen Cushman

Length: 4 hrs and 23 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 04-13-10
    Publisher: Listening Library
Ratings: 4.5 of 5 out of 29 votes
    Genres: Kids, Ages 8-10
    Publisher's Summary:
Fans of Karen Cushman's witty, satisfying novels will welcome Meggy Swann, newly come to London with her only friend, a goose named Louise.
Meggy's mother was glad to be rid of her; her father, who sent for her, doesn't want her after all. Meggy is appalled by London, dirty and noisy, full of rogues and thieves, and difficult to get around in - not that getting around is ever easy for someone who walks with the help of two sticks.
Just as her alchemist father pursues his Great Work of transforming base metal into gold, Meggy finds herself pursuing her own transformation. Earthy and colorful, Elizabethan London has its dark side, but it also has gifts in store for Meggy Swann.

    Higly recomended
If you could sum up Alchemy and Meggy Swann in three words, what would they be?
This is a story about the alchemy of the human spirit. Meggy Swann makes the transformation from a hidden away defensive crippled girl, to a kind and generous, strong and confident young woman as she moves from her mothers house in the country to her fathers house in the city of London.
What does Katherine Kellgren bring to the story that you wouldnt experience if you just read the book?
Katherine Kellgrens voice lends itself well to that of an adolescent teenage girl, and her narration is faultless for all other character, as always.
Great story, not my favorite narration
If you could sum up Alchemy and Meggy Swann in three words, what would they be?
Really fun coming of age story about a girl who had to learn to "stand on her own two feet" even when they don't work quite as well as they should. Meggy learns that family doesn't equal love and safety, but that finding good friends to help you through life are a wonderful gift.
Did Katherine Kellgren do a good job differentiating all the characters? How?
Wasn't a big fan of the narration, especially did not enjoy her representation of Meggy. But didn't "not" enjoy it enough to stop listening. I've read the book several times on my own and simply enjoy the story itself.
    Shrill reader; sensitive author
I was very impressed by the realistic view of Elizabethan London. Also by the no-nonsense approach to the protagonist's life. The portrayal of a person with a disability as neither sappily brave a-la Tiny Tim nor evil nor magically cured at the end is refreshing, highly unusual and shows remarkable insight, emotional subtlety and sensitivity on the part of the author. The language had a great feel of the time.
I have only two complaints. The book was just a little darker than I could have wished, and the reader was way too dramatic. Her drama was perfect for dramatic parts, but she tended to use a semi-hysterical voice to express minor quandaries, which put my teeth on edge a lot.
Overall a high quality book, and one I would strongly recommend for the 10 to 18 set. (I am loooong past that!)

    Excellent!!!
I was looking for books for an Amish family for Christmas. The daughter is 11 years old and she loves to read. I knew I had to be particular in the choice of books I chose. Something with Godly value and a lesson learned preferably. I have sent the whole series of these books and I have received a letter back in regards to these books. They were a spectacular hit and I am thrilled. I will sending more as they are published for Birthday's etc. to my dear Amish friends. Publisher's Summary:
By their nature fables are "fabulous," larger than life, the characters often using wit and guile to save themselves from circumstances. Aesop's Fables are morality plays. They illustrate what was fundamental to Greek culture. Their appeal to us lies in a logic we can still understand. This awakens an appreciation of how far ahead of their time the Greeks were, how enduring their thought was, and how much we have to be grateful to them. This collection features 185 of these famous fables.

    Beautiful book
I bought this for my granddaughters for Christmas. Their mother reports that they love it! The three year old has poured over it, turning the pages and making up stories just from observing the beautiful illustrations. Her older sister told me she loves the stories and is very excited to have it in their bedtime stories line up.
    Beautiful illustrations
Beautiful pictures. The stories are shorter than I remember them being. It has a nice mix of short stories and very, very short stories -- wish it contained more of each!
The beautiful colorful drawings enriched the stories
The book arrived quickly and was in very good condition. It was my brothers favorite book when he was a child snd the stories brought back many memories.
    Great book! Crappy delivery!
It's definitely a beautiful and well built book It's sturdy and as a hard cover will last a long time. The artwork within is simple and non-distracting but still very nice and displays the story through an artistic viewpoint very well. The text is quite large but not so large that it would make an unsightly book but large enough that anyone with a disability or anyone who needs reading glasses would find the task much easier. It includes most of the classic text but some not the original. All around a beautiful book and a wonderful purchase. The delivery guy could have been less of a jerk and the packaging could have been nicer because some of my pages are bent.
    Good moral lessons
Written a little above our kids level. I had to do a lot of explaining. I'm sure they will love them in a few years. Still teaches good moral lessons.

    Title: Steel Trapp
    Subtitle: The Academy
    Author: Ridley Pearson
    Narrator: William Dufris
    Format: Unabridged
Length: 8 hrs and 19 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 01-06-10
    Publisher: Brilliance Audio
Ratings: 4 of 5 out of 42 votes
    Genres: Kids, Ages 8-10
    Publisher's Summary:
Steven "Steel" Trapp has been placed in an East Coast boarding school for gifted kids by his FBI agent father. He soon discovers that there's a clubby element of the faculty and upper classmen that is very secretive and protective. To his surprise, his friend Kaleigh arrives to board at the school, and it isn't long before the two realize that this is not your normal boarding school.
It seems a select few students are recruited, while still minors, to serve as special "translators" for the US Government. People - including diplomats and dignitaries - will say things around kids that they wouldn't otherwise dare speak outside of embassies. The willing student "agent" takes a semester abroad and ends up spying for his country.
As Steel and Kaleigh are recruited for their first test run - trying to break a ring of pickpockets in a Boston hotel - things go impossibly wrong. Betrayal and conspiracy cloud what should have been a straightforward assignment. And all too soon, their very lives are in danger.
    Members Reviews:
    Love it!!
This is a great story. The author gets in the mind of a boy genius rather well. The story is great for like ages 8-10 and up. So great book you should read/listen to this and the first book in the series, I promise you won't be disappointed.
    Good but not credible
Steel and his friend Kaleigh end up at a high end boarding school that on the surface seems yet another snob school. But the two begin to realize that all the students have some kind of special gift and through some amateur sleuthing discover the school is a school of espionage. They get caught in their discovery and learn they have been selected for a special mission and their training begins. This is where the book loses credibility, even for a young adult. There is no way on the face of the earth anyone could suspend their belief system long enough to take seriously that two kids would be sent alone on the mission they are assigned to. There is too much contemporary realism in the environment to support that kind of fantasy and this is where Pearson fails to be consistent in the writing. Nevertheless, even as an adult reader, the book was good enough for me to finish and I would recommend to young teens as a fun, quick read. The characters are fairly well developed. The "young love" theme plays out according to the normal teen life cycle. The special gifts the kids have are rare, but do exist in people. The narration is fine. There is no graphic violence or sex, which make the book a PG read for teens, which parents might find inviting. It is well written and the plot flows through to the end without without stranded story lines.
Great, but not as good as Kingdom Keepers
This was a great book and part of a wonderful series. I would compare it to a more youthful version of the Alex Rider Series. However, the Author did a much better job with the Kingdom Keepers Series.
