    Title: The Four Just Men
    Author: Edgar Wallace
    Narrator: Bill Homewood
    Format: Unabridged
Length: 4 hrs and 31 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 05-01-11
    Publisher: Naxos AudioBooks
Ratings: 4 of 5 out of 8 votes
Genres: Mysteries & Thrillers, Classic Detective
    Publisher's Summary:
Edgar Wallaces classic vigilante detective series The Four Just Men involving four wealthy and resourceful individuals determined to take the law into their own hands has maintained its popularity for over a century. It began with The Four Just Men in 1905, and was followed by five other books recounting further adventures, the Walter Ford film (1939), and a TV series (1959-60).
In this, the opening volume, the mysterious Four Just Men punish by death those who are beyond the reach of the law. When Foreign Secretary Sir Philip Ramons proposed Aliens Extradition Bill threatens the safety of a Spanish resistance leader, the men warn Sir Philip that he must either withdraw the legislation or face death.
This is a gripping novel in which the police struggle to protect Ramon and capture the men against the fast approaching deadline.
    Editorial Reviews:
Originally written in 1920, this entertaining novel benefits from the superb performance of narrator Bill Homewood. The story focuses on four men with ostensibly laudable goals who battle injustice like modern-day Robin Hoods. Yet the four remain enigmas, whose motives at time appear to be highly questionable. Because the protagonists lack sufficient individual personalities to make it easy for readers to distinguish among them, it is even harder to ascertain their ultimate goals. Fortunately, Bill Homewood demonstrates the power of a great reader. He transitions beautifully between characters and provides each with a distinctive timbre, tone, and personality, thus overcoming the novel's limitations.

Classic Page Turner of a Thriller
This is an excellent quick novel that moves right along about the Four Just Men who seek to exact justice on wrongdoers in England at the turn of the century. When they threaten a politician due to a bill he has brought before the government which they believe to be wrong, a massive panic sweeps through the nation and the search is on.
From beginning to end, several surprises abound in this race against time thriller that keeps you guessing. Mr. Wallace is said to have written over 170 novels and over a thousand short stories. I also read his thriller Jack O'Judgement which was excellent as well. And for the price, this is a must for die hard crime fiction fans.
    Loved this book
A different kind of murder mystery because we knew who was the target and who were the murderers. Outstanding! A page turner.
    great book
edgar wallace is one of my favourate authors and this is one of his best books
    Surprisingly contemporary...
When the British Foreign Secretary decides to push through a law which will allow the enforced return of political refugees to their countries of origin, he becomes a target of the Four Just Men â a group of vigilantes who set out to right what they perceive as wrongs that the normal systems of justice can't touch. The story is a kind of cat-and-mouse game where the reader, along with the entire British public, waits to see if the Four Just Men succeed in carrying out their threat to assassinate the Foreign Secretary.
This was a rather odd read for me, in that I hated the premise â vigilantes are not my cup of tea â and yet found the storytelling compelling enough that I found myself racing through it. It's well written and the pacing is excellent.

    Format: Unabridged
Length: 8 hrs and 29 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 04-11-11
    Publisher: Tantor Audio
Ratings: 4 of 5 out of 10 votes
Genres: Mysteries & Thrillers, Classic Detective
    Publisher's Summary:
Set in Essex in the English countryside, The Mysterious Affair at Styles is one of the great classic murder mysteries. The victim, Mrs. Emily Inglethorp, is the wealthy mistress of Styles Court. After an evening of entertaining family and guests, she is found poisoned in her locked bedroom. The long list of suspects includes her gold-digging new husband, her stepsons, her best female friend, and a visiting doctor. As luck would have it, a brilliant, if rather eccentric, detective is among the company at Styles. In this, her first published mystery, Agatha Christie introduces her beloved Belgian inspector Hercule Poirot, who methodically pieces together the intricate evidence of this bewildering crime. From his very first appearance, Poirot amuses audiences with his oddly fastidious habits---then astonishes them with the power of his razor-sharp mind. Christie keeps listeners guessing as to the murderer's identity until Poirot finally presents his ingenious solution to this landmark mystery.

    Narrator unsuited for the story
My 1-star rating has nothing to do with the book/story itself, and everything to do with the absolute unsuitability of the narrator. I could only listen through chapter 4 before I had to buy the book with a different narrator, because I simply could not listen to her butcher Poirot and Hastings the way that she did. I don't doubt that she is a good narrator in other contexts, but she should never have done a Poirot story. Save yourself the trouble and look for another version of this one.
Don't buy this audible w/this Narrator..
Narrator for this book was simply horrible....the voice used for Poirot was just terrible....a women's voice should not be used for this character....
    Every Detail Counts
Would you consider the audio edition of The Mysterious Affair at Styles to be better than the print version?
This story was amazing. Little details of the story that seemed insigificant added to the end of the plot. This was a fantaftic mystery with a very surprising, detailed ending.
What other book might you compare The Mysterious Affair at Styles to and why?
Death in the Air. If you love Agatha Christie, you'll love this mystery.
What does Penelope Dellaporta bring to the story that you wouldnt experience if you just read the book?
The change in voices helped the story be believable.
Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?
I listen in the car rides to and from work and couldn't wait to get into the car.

But while Reggie is working on that case, the letters to Sherlock Holmes are piling upincluding one from someone who claims to be the descendant of Professor James Moriarty.
    Critic Reviews:
Robertsons second mystery featuring barrister Reggie Heathoffers pacing, prose, and plotting at a level far above that of its predecessorAn extremely clever evil scheme will delight readers. (
    Publishers Weekly)
    Members Reviews:
Mystery spoof on Sherlock Holmes mysteries!
This second mystery in a series about Reggie and Nigel Heath, is a serious mystery spoof on the Sherlock Holmes mysteries. In 1997 London, the Heath brothers have leased 221 Baker Street for their law offices. As part of their lease, they must send a form letter to everyone who sends them a letter addressed to the legendary Sherlock Holmes. Right now, that's about all that is happening at their offices. Then the lovely barrister, Darla Rennie asks Reggie to defend a London Black Cabbie against a murder charge. In doing so, Reggie gets himself deep into a deadly situation concerning all of the Black Cabbies.
This mystery has lots of charm and humor mixed in with serious threats, chases, and an unusual psychological workshop. A letter signed by a "Dr Moriarty" comes to Baker Street sending Reggie onto a clue to save his client, but it also seems to threaten his own life. The London Black Cabbies play an important roll in solving the crime also.
Clever take on the Sherlock Holmes theme! Looking forward to reading more in this series!
    A Dud
Great idea for a story, but this turned out to be a dud for me. Hard to follow what was happening; narrative seemed arch and labored. Conspicuously lacking in wit.

Here are the six final stories from The Innocence of Father Brown relating the crime-solving adventures of a rather unconventional detective. Having accumulated wisdom and empathy from years of listening to the dark confessions of his parishioners, in a flash Father Brown is able to solve mysteries that confound all others. Here is an eccentric and loveable character that will appeal to fans of the legendary sleuth Sherlock Holmes. The stories are engagingly read by David Timson: "The Wrong Shape", "The Sins of Prince Saradine", "The Hammer of God", "The Eye of Apollo", "The Sign of the Broken Sword", and "The Three Tools of Death".
    Editorial Reviews:
Don't let the quaint title deceive you - this is Chesterton at his most artfully wicked. David Timson excels as gentle Father Brown, as well as the many other diverse characters. Timson's self-effacing tone is just right for Father Brown, and he also boldly taps a variety of British accents to clearly identify both the locale of stories and the class of various characters. The music of Reicha Wind Quintets shines in the interludes between these six stories. Father Brown's considered deductions are irrefutable, employing subtle philosophy and psychology rather than forensic analysis. His thoughtful perspicacity startles even the most confident of criminals.

The Innocense of Father Brown Vo. 2 (complete classics)
Father Brown brings a Christian voice to his stories but in a quiet manner that is not in your face.
These stories have such a twist and turn that they keep you dangling until the end. It always appears that
the bad guy didn't do it until the end and sometimes he didn't do it. It is my type of mystery -keeps you on your toes, without much blood and gore! This last set of CDs, we purchased for our 95 year old priest who loves reading but has problems with his eyes. He is loving them. I give them 4 stars.
    Wonderful stories
Love the Fr. Brown stories! The reader is great and really makes the story come alive! Definitely recommend this recording to others!
Excellent - The Hammer of God
This, "The Hammer of God", is a short story in audio format. It s an excellent narration of what is, to this point, my favorite "Father Brown" mystery. The short story is written by G. K. Chesterton. The protagonist is Father Brown who was inspired by a friend of G. K. Chesterton. To my knowledge, there are approx. 53 Father Brown stories. This is possibly favorite one. I cannot really tell you why without risking spoiling the story. Thank You...

    Too abridged to fully comprehend
Very well performed -- it's the BBC after all -- but because of the half hour time constraint, too many details are lost -- particularly during the trial scene. If you already know the story, this version is ok. Read the original short story or listen to Christopher Lee's reading of it which is much better.

I always hate when Poirot takes a while to appear, but once again, it didn't disappoint!
Fantastic, unexpected twist at the end!!
    Wonderful Dramatic Christie Murder
Curtain call murder mystery at its best. Only Agatha Christie knows how to thrill in three dramatic acts to prove who her killer is. Clive Merrison aka radio Sherlock Holmes is part of this full cast production along with many other great British actors of the day which lends a theatrical slant as though we are at the theatre watching it all happen before our very eyes. It is all there, but did we see it? Wonderful.

    Very good
Good story and well-performed. I thought I had it figured out pretty early on and would've been slightly disappointed, but as the story developed more I was definitely not disappointed.
    Suspenseful, well acted!
Suspenseful, briskly paced and the perfect length story for a misty walk in the park with my dog.
A new one on me, but now a favorite
A new one on me, but now a favorite. Cleverly plotted with a twist at the end that you never see coming.
    Typical Christie!
I heard this in black and white, it had that sort of sound. The only fly in the ointment was the whiny voice of the child, but I suppose that's how they were portrayed when this was dramatised. As I did, you will no doubt have the culprit pinpointed way before the end but that does not detract from the neatness of this pure Christie plot.
