    Quick Read!
I like any thing written by Agatha Christie, but sometimes you want a quick read but still enough mystery to figure out. And this book certainly does that. What I always like about her books is that you think you have figured it out right from the beginning,, only to find out you were not quite as wise as you thought you were.
    Classic Agatha
What can one say about anything Agatha Christie has written. I have read almost all of her books and short stories, but every once in a while I find one that I have missed. Philomel Cottage is such. It is an old love story with twists and naturally mystery thrown in. I am an older person and a book-worm (now also a Kindle worm) and I can't say that I have enjoyed reading any other author as Agatha Christie so much. Philomel Cottage has given me again a couple of delightful hours of a good read.
    Philippe cottage
A different mystery in this story. Again it was a good story just right for a quiet evening for a bookaholic. Thanks
One of my favorites by Agatha Christie
I'm a big fan of Agatha Christie's and this is one of my favorite stories. It is short but extremely original and very entertaining.
    Ingenious!!
As usual, this is a great short story by the clever Agatha Christie! It was intriguing throughout and has a twist ending that will surprise you-- even if you don't think you can possibly be surprised, Ms. Christie will manage to do so., This is an entertaining way to spend about half an hour or so. It's well worth it so check it out!

    Good, different
This is a very UNtypical Agatha Christie collection. The stories are all good, of course, but I found many of them to be dark and without humor. Her books are always so uplifting, even with murder as a background, that I was a little shocked at these stories. Read them for their interest, but don't expect them to sound like our lady's usual work.
    Five Stars
    none
    Classic
    Agatha Christie is always excellent
    Christie
What's not to love about a story by this legendary author. It keeps the reader glued to the story. It adds to the large number of Christie works.
    A great Christie collection
Another fantastic Christie novel. I wish she'd written more.

    fantastico!
I'm a huge Agatha Christie fan and I love all of her stories but this is one of the best. I've been reading children's books until now to practice my Italian and I thought this would be a bit too difficult but the pronunciation is really clear.
la produzione e anche molto buona con tutte le voci e la musica drammatica.
One thing is a bit strange. The original title of this book was quite offensive and the title has been changed but the name of the island and the poem haven't been updated. I'm assured this word is also extremely rude in Italian. Besides that. it's a great listen!
    Buon ascolto!

It was planned as an act of charity: a new piano for the parish hall, an amusing play to finance the gift. The question now under bitter discussion is, who shall play the overture?
Though Eleanor Prentice wins, on the night of the performance, she cannot play. Miss Campanula steps triumphantly into the breach - a chord was is, a shot rings out, and Miss Campanula is dead, shot between the eyes. A case of sinister infatuation for the brilliant Chief Detective-Inspector Alleyn.

    Music Can Be Murder
Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?
I would recommend this to anyone who likes a "cozy" mystery. Well written, in typical Ngaio Marsh style.
Who was your favorite character and why?
Roderick Alleyn, of course. The urbane and insightful detective.
What about Anton Lessers performance did you like?
I've enjoyed his film performances so much that I was eager to listen to his performances as a narrator. I was not disappointed. He is wonderful to listen to.
Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?
No extreme reactions, but it was a nice relaxing listen that kept me guessing.
    Finished
I enjoyed this book very much and particularly Anton Lesser 's gripping performance of it. Recommended.

  • His Last Bow Audiobook by Arthur Conan Doyle

    Title: His Last Bow
Subtitle: Short Stories of Sherlock Holmes
    Author: Arthur Conan Doyle
    Narrator: Simon Prebble
    Format: Unabridged
    Length: 7 hrs
    Language: English
    Release date: 03-09-10
    Publisher: Tantor Audio
Ratings: 4.5 of 5 out of 37 votes
Genres: Mysteries & Thrillers, Classic Detective
    Publisher's Summary:
Gathering together in one volume the later exploits of Sherlock Holmes, the world's first consulting detective, His Last Bow includes tales published individually between 1908 and 1917. It also contains one early story, 1892's "The Adventure of the Cardboard Box", which, with its themes of adultery, was previously considered too "scandalous" for American audiences.
Here, Holmes must contend with mysterious bearded men, stolen secret submarine plans, a missing lady aristocrat, and his own near-fatal illness.
The stories contained in His Last Bow are "The Adventure of Wisteria Lodge", "The Adventure of the Cardboard Box", "The Adventure of the Red Circle", "The Adventure of the Bruce-Partington Plans", "The Adventure of the Dying Detective", "The Disappearance of Lady Frances Carfax", "The Adventure of the Devil's Foot", and "His Last Bow".
    Members Reviews:
    Some Interesting Criminal Grotesques, but
SImon Prebble does a great Holmes and a spot on Watson, and His Last Bow (1917?) does have its moments, and Conan Doyle is ever a fine writer, and I like the device he frequently uses of the story within a story (as when Watson depicts suspects or clients telling their stories to Holmes). But am I beginning to tire of Sherlock Holmes stories, having worked through all of them except those in The Casebook of Sherlock Holmes?
"The Adventure of the Wisteria Lodge" opens with a conservative bachelor who feels ill used by a mysterious new acquaintance called Garcia and his grotesque servants and then morphs into a tale of patriots trying to achieve justice against the cruel and greedy dictator who traumatized their Central American country San Pedro and then absconded with his ill gotten gains. Throughout the story, Holmes has, for once, a competent local detective rival.
"The Adventure of the Cardboard Box" features severed human ears packed in salt and some ungovernable adulterous passions.
"The Adventure of the Red Circle" concerns the long reach of Italian American organized crime (and feels like others of Holmes' stories that deal with organized crime and star-crossed lovers).
"The Adventure of the Bruce-Partington Plans" deals with a corpse found in the London tube without his ticket and with some top secret plans for a new type of submarine. It reminds me of the earlier Holmes story "The Naval Treaty" and disappointingly depicts Mycroft Holmes as a man with an important job.
"The Adventure of the Dying Detective" features a brilliant villain who is to microbes as Holmes is to criminals (but the best part of the story may be its title).
In "The Disappearance of Lady Frances Carfax" autumnal love is interfered with by an amoral Australian con man.
In the entertaining "The Adventure of the Devil's Foot" we witness an egregious example of Holmes' reckless experimentation that ends up displaying the depths and powers of Watson's affection for him.
"His Last Bow," published in 1917 during WWI, is an uninspiring third person story not narrated by Watson and deals with international intrigue between patriotic Brits and cocky and slimy Germans.

Narrator: Michael Fenton Stevens, Jan Ravens
    Format: Original Recording
Length: 2 hrs and 47 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 03-03-10
    Publisher: BBC Worldwide Limited
Ratings: 4 of 5 out of 2 votes
Genres: Mysteries & Thrillers, Classic Detective
    Publisher's Summary:
The first series of Lynne Truss's hugely popular BBC Radio 4 comedy thriller set in 1950s Brighton. A place of knickerbocker glories, end-of-the pier shows... and an enormous amount of unsolved crime.
Step forward Inspector Steine. Naive and innocent, he believes that he wiped out all the villains at a single stroke in the Middle Street Massacre when seventeen local hoodlums gunned each other to death. Fortunately, long-suffering Sergeant Brunswick is at hand to help Steine with his enquiries. Aided by keen Constable Twitten, they must find the criminal mastermind who is operating undetected in their midst.
In these six episodes, a headless corpse is found on the Palace Pier ghost train; a foppish London theatre critic is found dead after a performance of a kitchen-sink drama; and the Inspector decides to go undercover at the Black Cat Casino while a robbery takes place in the bank next door to the police station. In addition, Ventriloquist Vince receives threats after moving his booth to a new pitch; Steine falls in love with Adelaide Vine, the beautiful owner of a fish and chip shop; and ponders how to celebrate the five-year anniversary of the Middle Street Massacre: unaware that a deranged criminal has escaped from Broadmoor with revenge on his lips...
Starring Michael Fenton Stevens as Steine and Jan Ravens as Mrs Groynes, this perfectly-judged blend of humour, nostalgia and mystery from bestselling author Lynne Truss makes for an irresistible listen.

    Total anti climax
Not funny except for one line
Boring poor script presumably it was meant to be predictable .... It was but totally lacked humour or entertainment value performance was good the content was poor
    good fun
not to be taken too seriously. this is well acted, slightly wistful salute too comedy great of the era. Enjoy with whimsy and this will do everything I says it does on the package
    very funny and well acted
Where does Inspector Steine (Dramatised) rank among all the audiobooks youve listened to so far?
This story is very witty. I listened to this on a long flight to pass the time. It was laugh out loud funny. I was so annoyed when we came to land as I hadn't listened to it all - had to finish listening to it when I reached the hotel. Wish there were more!
A bit of humour around a bit of detection
A little far fetched but makes you smile, gives you a laugh, and is quite entertaining and easy to listen to!
    Middling
This was just too lightweight and also slightly irritating. It passed the time, but not something I will listen to again.

I knew I was purchasing old radio programs but if you have any sense in your head at all these will drive you crazy for their simplicity. They are not good examples of sherlock holmes - edited and cut and done in a silly fashion with irritating sounds effects. Did not enjoy.

Would you say that listening to this book was time well-spent? Why or why not?
    some of it
    Any additional comments?
this appears to be an early version of a michael gilbert novel retitled The Danger Within, in which he cut out the long tedious escape through italy part at the end and wound up neatly and dramatically with the mass escape and the discovery of the spy. Second version was much better, too bad you didn't record that one.
