Plenty Of Twists And Turns

I liked this book. I really, really did. But I didn't like Richard. At all. He's selfish, insecure, egotistical, and prone to bouts of jealousy. He's not exactly husband material, even though Kate has been married to him for the past ten years, in what I can only assume was wedded bliss, until he found a bed more enticing than his own. Sure, he's attractive for middle age, and he seems to take care of himself, but that doesn't give him a license for adultery.

And I'd have to say for an ex-CIA officer, John Powers isn't really all that appealing either. He takes child molestation and stalking and revenge and a sense of perverted justice to a whole new level, and as long as he has a gun or knife in his possession, he doesn't care who gets in his way. Yeah, he pretty much has that whole evil thing down pat.

While Luke Dallas does have his finer moments, he starts out as a reasonably unlikeable character, and he's become just a wee bit obsessed with rubbing his writing success in the face of Richard and Kate, to the point that his Christmas cards are filled with publicity announcements for his latest masterpiece. But he did change (and for the better) by the end of the novel, while Richard proceeded on his downward, self-obsessed spiral faster than Tiger Woods.

Right about now, you might be asking yourself why I gave CAUSE FOR ALARM four stars. Other than a group of unlikeable characters (all of which seemed to be male), this book held my attention from the first page to the last. The story provided enough twists and turns to rival a West Virginia holler, intriguing characterization (if you exclude about a handful of males), I could practically taste the humidity in the Mandeville, Louisiana setting, and the book moved as swiftly as an interstate highway.

If I didn't already have more Erica Spindler novels in my Kindle, I'd certainly be adding a few more after this entertaining read.

By far this is my least favorite Erica Spindler book of the many I've read. The plot was far fetched even by her standards, but it was the language she used for the characters that I found most unbelievable. I never could buy into the characters for all the cheesy dialog. Vacuous Characters in an Absence of Poetry

Two of the most colorful characters in audio fiction are Dave Robicheaux and Cletus Purcel of James Lee Burke's Iberia Parrish. Contrast them with this novel's Billy Bob Holland and Doc Voss and the reader/listener of Bitterroot is left asking the question, "Why so flat?"

Holland and Voss might be good at slugging it out when pressed (or if the virtue of a female character has been besmirched), but their inept emotional responses to truly terrifying and painful traumas in the lives of loved ones makes them seem like a couple of dullards. Dave and Clete wear their emotions like tattoos on their biceps...that's what makes them compelling, particularly Clete whose "take no prisoners" response to threats on those he loves is raised to a unique art form.

Something else is missing from this story of Mafia Meets Western Motif; there is none of the painfully beautiful prose to describe the striking Montana landscape that listeners experience when they hear Burke's descriptions of Bayou Teche, Louisiana, or New Orleans (pre and post-Katrina). Montana may be a rugged and forested landscape in reality, but in Bitterroot it is a pancake-flat character. In Dave Robicheaux novels setting is character. In Bitterroot, Billy Bob, Doc, and the mountains from which the title derives are mere obstacles the reader must endure as he/she passes the hours waiting for the story to erode.

I like all of James Lee Burke's books. The narrator for the Billy Bob Holland series is good but he has two odd quirks: 1-He can't pronounce words that end in "r-n" correctly. He says "Northerun," "Southerun," and "lanterun." Not a huge problem, but wierd. 2-He makes Lucas sound like a total moron. I keep waiting for him to say, "Tell me about the rabbits, George," or "Which way did he go, George? Which way did he go?"

Big novel for the Big Sky!

I find it impossible to stop listening to Burke's work. His characters are engrossing and his story telling is riveting.

As I've mentioned before, Tom Stechschulte is a fantastic narrator, just as good as Will Patton who reads most of Burke's more current works. This is the third novel in the Billy Bob Holland series. I actually tried to listen to the 2cd novel in the series called Heartwood, which is a favorite of the author, but the narrator's exaggerated southern accent was so convoluted I got a refund.

Good plot, awful prose.

Very intriguing plot; very poor writing. EXTREMELY poor writing. Makes you cringe when you read it, but you keep reading because you want to know what happens. Word to the wise: read the first book first! I read this second because my dad had a paperback copy and I was so confused for the first third. I went back and read the first book and realized it didn't have to be confusing. Save yourself the headache, especially given how much you're going to want to beat your head into a wall after reading the author's metaphors.

First one was just a bit more interesting...I have to be fair,the more I read it did get better and I am glad that I did not get annoyed with the first few chapters and I continued on...Very deep.I think you should take your time,and it is not just a breeze through book. Very intriguing.

not as strong as Sanctus, but a good continuation nonetheless

"The Key" is the second act of the Sanctus trilogy. While I don't think it was a strong or mystical as "Sanctus," this was still a good read.

Liv Adamson can't exactly remember what happened in the Citadel (the events at the end of the previous book), but she slowly begins to realize what she carries...or rather, who she's become. And it's because of this that the monks in the Citadel want her back inside the mountain.

At the same time, a dig in Iraq is occurring with the secret consent of a high-ranking member of the Vatican. This person knows Liv cannot be allowed near the site as all of his plans will crumble. Yet Liv, with the help of Gabriel Mann, is being drawn to this place.

Elmore Leonard and Frank Muller: Unbeatable.

It is such a pleasure to be able to give this book five stars. These two guys are in leagues of their own. Frank Muller was the greatest narrator who ever read a book. Leonard is still alive and about eighty. He has been writing about one book a year for sixty years. He may be slowing down now, but several of his books have been made into movies and at least one into a TV series (Justified, starring Timothy Olyphant, is based on the book called Raylan, and it's one of the few things on TV worth watching). In this book Leonard crafts his typical suspense story, peopled with characters whom he draws quickly. He has an ear for dialogue that is unmatched. He writes about gangsters and regular people in Detroit and Miami. His writing is unique: usually within a paragraph or two you know it's him. The suspense in this book builds to the point at which it is almost unbearable. You just can't believe that George Moran doesn't do what he needs to do until the very last page, and you find yourself urging him to do it. Leonard creates a cast of people who are so real and so vital that you can almost touch them. The monstrous Dominican General DeBoya is so completely evil that you want to kill him yourself. The romance between George and Mary, the General's wife, is tender and believable from their first meeting in the D.R. The details of the war in the D.R. are so vivid that you really think that Leonard might have fought in it. In sum, this is my favorite narrator and one of my favorite writers. You just cannot possibly go wrong with these two gentlemen. I'm so glad that these books are now available on Audible. You will eat them up.

The man--the absolute man.

Elmore Leonard was the master of his art, and Frank Muller the master of his. This kind of storytelling will never get old.

Great story, hard to hear

What didnt you like about Frank Mullers performance?

This was the only part we (two of us) had a problem with - That super-confidential tone, deep and quiet, was really annoying - especially when heard through an automobile sound system. It took a great deal of adjusting of bass and treble to make the audio work for us. This has not happened with other performers.

Always enjoy Elmore Leonard's novels.

A must for audiobook fans.

Would you consider the audio edition of Cat Chaser to be better than the print version?

I have not read the print version but I enjoyed the performance really very much. Frank Muller does a very good job of bringing the characters to life. I could at some point be in love with the lady in the story... Also get scared at that point when the characters confronted each other wondering what will happen now.

What did you like best about this story?

With everything going on around, I liked the George's adventure... especially how they met and even the love plot. Mr. Muller does a great job, really.

I liked the guy Scully, how his behaviour was conveyed, calm and doing a good job in persuading people by talking etc...

A Yarn for Old School Computer Geeks

Jeffery Deaver write novels that turn your head inside out and keep you guessing. This book is no different. The difference is that this tale takes inside of the world of hackers. It's true that this world is a bit dated, but that makes no less fascinating to newbies or those who remember those days fondly.

Wyatt Gillette is addicted to computers and the internet. It lands him in prison. But there is a killer out there who speaks the language Gillette speaks and Detective Frank Bishop needs Gillette to find him. The story is fast faced and doesn't let up for a minute. It's a great read, read well by William Dufris. Check it out and enjoy!

good read

We take long trips at least once per month, and look forward to our "reads". We hadn't listened to Jeffry Deaver in at least 2 years, and were happy to find another book of his on Audible. We were not disappointed. The trip went by in a flash. Well developed characters, suspenseful and not too dark, although Deaver comes right up to the edge, and several surprises along the way.

Very good!

I really liked this book. I had to work this weekend and this helped me get through it.

The book was published in 2001 so that explains some of the tech being a little outdated, but the story is timeless.

If you like mystery you Must read this one

I have not read a book this good in a while. Devereaux Sinclair has moved back to the small town she grew up in to help her grandmother who is sick. She gets pulled into a murder investigation when a gift basket she created is found at the murder scene. The story is realistic and fun. The characters are enjoyable. The dialogue is fun and witty. The mystery was solved at the end of the book by the author and not me. If I could give it 10 stars I would. The only thing I do not like is that I have to wait while for the next book in the series.

Definitely not what I expect from Denise Swanson!

I don't know. I have been listening to the Scrumble River series and thought I might also enjoy this. I enjoy mysteries, but this had a lot of throbbing body parts, touches that sent shivers down someone's back, and other things that you don't usually find in a good mystery. Another reviewer was correct when she said it was 1/3 mystery and 2/3 sappy. I think Ms. Swanson may have been trying to make it sexy, but failed miserably.

Has Little Shop of Homicide turned you off from other books in this genre?

Not the cozy mystery genre, but I'm not really sure what genre this belongs to. I definitely will not check to see if there is another book in this series.

Disappointment! I enjoyed the Scrumble River series from Denise Swanson and hoped this would be as good. It seems that Denise Swanson is trying to go in a steamier direction.

Overall enjoyable

What's not to love about a murder mystery, perfect yet imperfect main character and her potential hot new love. Looking forward to the next book.

No, I'm a long-time mystery fan, and it would take more than one book to turn me off to the genre. However, I won't read any more books in this series.

What aspect of Maia Guests performance would you have changed?

There was something funny about the way Jake was voiced -- what I suppose was intended to be kind of a sexy whisper.

What character would you cut from Little Shop of Homicide?

Jake (though Devereaux would have had to have some other way of getting access to information about the police investigation).

I have enjoyed Swanson's Scrumble River series from the beginning and was looking forward to this one. It's particularly disappointing that this book isn't better because there were some good elements.

More plot, less sex please

Chris Williams does a wonderful job with her performance throughout the story. Ms. Allison Brennan could downplay many of the sex scenes and build fuller characters for a more satisfying listen. I have read and listened to later works from Ms. Brennan in which she does just this. I found it interesting to compare this earlier piece with some of the later ones. I really enjoy how she continues to build relationships with this series of books.

Interesting story; weak character development

What would have made Killing Fear better?

While the basic plot of what would happen next had some interesting twists, the story behind the villain's obsession with the main female character was a stretch. The historical bond between the main characters seemed to develop with an unreal speed (weeks) and was destroyed by an appropriate investigative question that left both of them with supposed emotional scars that lasted over a seven year period. It's implausible to think that the female character, with her presented strength and moxie could be affected to the degree she was; a theme that was reinforced ad nauseum during the book. It was all a little too far-fetched and ultimately detracted from some of the strong points of the writing. The personal relationship aspects of the story could have benefitted from a little more depth, which would have improved what had the potential to be a great book.

Would you ever listen to anything by Allison Brennan again?

Probably not.

I have read other books by Allison Brennan and have enjoyed them. I'm not sure if this book is an indication of mass production to increase publication volume or if evolution of my reading preferences has exposed me to better writers but the characters and some of the back-story to their relationships was remarkably weak.

Good, but tedious at times

While I enjoy the books, some of the characters are tedious, namely Madeleine's father. Sergeant Leeming also needs to grow. His constant complaining about being away from his family is childish, especially considering his line of work. Mr. Marston hasn't allowed his characters to change much in the 8 books I've read.
