I did not expect to like it, but...

...Tin God is an excellent suspense mystery with superb narration. Author Stacy Green has the concept of unexpected plot twists down pat. It is a worthwhile listen.

Hypocrites and Dirty Tricks

Wow! Never expected this one to be so good! I love southern fiction, and this one is set in Mississippi, smack in the middle of the Bible belt . . . and sadly but truthfully, a place that is full of believers . . . and hypocrites galore. And just like in Tin God, they are not always easily identified by outward appearances. Jaymee Ballard gave up her baby girl to adoption several years ago, coerced by someone she trusted, when she was just seventeen. But she has never given up on finding her. Jaymee only told one person in Roselea, Mississippi about her daughter . . . now that person has been murdered. Four years earlier, Jaymee's best friend, Lana, who was trying to help Jaymee find her daughter, was also murdered. Are the two murders connected? As the search for the killer progresses, the little town of Roselea comes unraveled . . . and evil is found in unexpected places.

What made the experience of listening to Tin God the most enjoyable?

The story is outstanding! This is a novel that's impossible to put down. It's gripping right from the start and keeps the reader thinking trying to figure out who the murder is!

What was one of the most memorable moments of Tin God?

I think the revelations about Jaymee's past are intriguing. I can't list too many memorable moments without giving away some of the exciting plot twists in the story, but I can guarantee there are MANY great moments!

Have you listened to any of Johanna Fairviews other performances before? How does this one compare?

I haven't listened to Johanna Fairview before, but I really enjoyed her narration in Tin God. Her delivery was even with a good flow. She has a bit of a husky/southern accent which added character to the dialogue. I found her very easy to listen to and enjoyed the audio version as much as I enjoyed reading this in paperback.

This is book 3 of a trilogy. I am not surprised that it is shorter than the other 2. He ran out of ideas. Too much pain and torture to the point of utter silliness.

It just turned into a silly torture device book. Very disappointing. SPOILER ALERT - Because Andrew cannot get himself to kill the psycho Luther in book 1, hundreds of people ( men, women and children ) are tortured and killed for 7 years before Luther goes after Andrew, his new love and her child. What a surprise???

After all that horror ...

Ending was just too much to tke. The whole series was too tragic for me but I kept going for the satisfaction of knowing, well I won't spoil the ending. I'll stick to Daniel Silva and Michael Connelly.

Poor ending to a fascinating series

Hated the ending to this series! These series was so well written and had me gasping out loud several times. Andrew was a believable character but the ending fell flat and made me mad that I'd spent all this time invested in these books.

A serial killer's journey into "absurdity "

I enjoy suspense thrillers and psychological drama, and even horror, sometimes. Blake Crouch is among my favorite authors, but I must say his novels featuring serial killer "Luther Kite" is a bit farfetched. Desert places and Locked doors were okay, until the end. It went a bit off track, into Texas chainsaw massacre territory. I mean a family of psychopathic killers, really?! I read "Break you" only because it was only 2 hours. I don't think I could have endured longer, and I thought maybe, just maybe we could put this "Beyond insane" monster to rest! Sadly, I couldn't even finish a 2 hour story. B-O-R-I-N-G!! In his effort to make the killer more interesting and creative; he only seemed to make him ridiculous. Crouch seems to have taken LC and laid back and luxuriated in his madness to the point of absurdity. As a result I became bored and no longer interested. The acts of the killer were so farfetched that I wonder if the author is not himself a little too enthralled with acts of violence and cruelty. I know this fiction, but for fiction it's a bit much. waste of time.

All wrapped up!

Fantastic ending to a great story. I loved the way that Crouch finished the book. I am not going to spoil anything, but .... pretty intense.

Well written, fast paced Jonathan Graves novella

Would you listen to Soft Targets again? Why?

Probably if I didn't have anything else lined up or needed something short while I was waiting for a release.

Did the plot keep you on the edge of your seat? How?

Yes and no. When the story began the listener can kind of predict how it's going to end however it the getting there that does throw some twists into this story.

What about Basil Sandss performance did you like?

Basil Sands is perfect for this story line. I had never listened to him before the Graves series but now think of Jonathan Graves as soon as I hear his voice.

This is a really good novella. It gives some background information on the relationship between Graves, Dom, Irene and Boxers. It also shows why Irene/Wolverine calls on Graves and allows or encourages him to do what he does even when it doesn't always comply with the law. But, he's "on the side of the angels"!

Marvelous thriller!

After listening to most recent three full length novels in the Jonathan Graves series I was not a big John Gilstrap fan. Two of the books earned 4 stars while the most recent earned only 2 stars. Soft Targets is a novella in the Graves series. It is superb! Both Gilstrap and narrator Basil Sands are outstanding. The story is about an FBI agent whose 12 and 14 year old daughters are kidnapped. The FBI agent, through her priest, seeks the help of US Special Forces soldier Jonathan Graves and his soldier friend in finding them quickly. Such help must be off the books since it is both illegal and unconstitutional for soldiers to operate on US soil.

Excellent!!

Mr. Gilstrap is a master at what he writes and the narrator completes the package. You will not be disappointed by this well written well read book!

Love it.

Now I am getting the rest of the series. really enjoyed the book.

Great start to a great character

What made the experience of listening to Soft Targets the most enjoyable?

After reading all of the other books in the series, this is a nice introduction into characters that would play roles throughout the other books. The story line is great, and unlike the other books in the Jonathan Grave series, this (being a novella) was fast and to the point.

We all know that Archer is a master story teller. However, in this - the fourth in the Clifton Chronicle Series - one has the feeling that he is writing to a pre-ordained master plan and is manipulating plot development to create the outcome that he wants.And so, while there are pleasant twists and turns, this is not a novel that will be talked about in the future as a noteworthy example of the "saga" genre. It is not in the same class as, say, Ken Follett's Century Trilogy.But don't mistake my assessment as intending to dissuade you from listening to the book. It's a great tale, written by an author whose skill is top tier, and will entertain you. It won't - nor is it intended to I think - tax you though. You'll be able to listen to it, and stop listening when it's time to go to bed. In other words, it won't keep you up all night as a compelling must read!

Audio Addiction

Wonderful production values throughout. Gripping plot ... impossible not to be drawn in. Alex Jennings narration is brilliant with an astonishing range of voices and accents.

Interesting continuation of the Clifton story

The story still has much interesting parts and new twists. Yet it fails to be anywhere like the first two.

TV is better

What would have made Hard Frost better?

The TV series has eliminated the ugly sexism of the novels and left an eccentric larrikinism. This makes the series quite acceptable with very little political correctness emanating from the character of Frost making him all the more acceptable.

What was most disappointing about R. D. Wingfields story?

Probably ok for its time, but my feeling is that R.D. Winfield was always an awful person. Charles Dickens characters can be utterly repulsive but we're not expected to like them or nudge, nudge, wink, wink excuse them. We are expected to like Frost as he is written. I can't stomach him as he is written. I will never listen to this book to the end. The main character is just too awful. It's all brainless tits and smut to him yet he's given the hard cases!

What didnt you like about Robin Brownes performance?

I didn't notice the performance, I was in shock that a favourite tv series had been made from such appalling books. I'll never watch the series again. It's been sullied totally by hearing one book!

What reaction did this book spark in you? Anger, sadness, disappointment?

Anger that people find Frost's shallow smutty behaviour acceptable. No thanks.

No. I don't want to think about it and that's why it's taken so long to review. I've never hated anything quite so much. I kept expecting the Frost character to grow and improve. He deteriorated.

MISOGYNY AT ITS BEST!

I simply cannot understand the high rating reviews here and on Amazon; Goodreads reviews are far more measured, many complaining at the negative, sexist references towards women, mainly by Frost, but seemingly compounded by a lot of his male co-workers. See also The Letterpress Project which succinctly describes how I feel about this type of writing. It's not often I delete downloads from Audible ... but this is a prime example. Hopefully these kind of references towards women will, eventually, be recognised for what they are ... mindless ignorance. With this subject being covered by Prime Time Media at the moment it illustrates how long this negativity towards women has been allowed to infiltrate society.

starting to get a bit to repetitive

still enjoyed this book but sadly unlike the greats like PD James the stories in these types of series always start to become repetitive and this is no exception.

Narration may have affected the story

I did like the storyline and the complex relationship, but found myself wondering whether I should be reacting differently than I was to the dialogue. The scenes that I think were intended to be funny came across flat. The narrator seems to have two gears - intense and news reporter. I think she would make a great kids novel narrator with her tone of voice, but doesn't convey sexy, brutish Scot to me. And the end scene seemed sort of ridiculous which saddened me as there was such a build up to their reuniting. I am curious enough to get the other books in the series, because I have been impressed by the author's other series.

Slow first half

The introduction was great, after that it was pretty boring all the way to chapter 24, then it got interesting again. To bad it took so long.

3.5 Light, entertaining love vs. duty listen

This is book 1 of the Lockhart Trilogy and was an enjoyable listen set in 1816 about handsome, but scarred, Highlander Liam and a desperate Quest that takes him to London to find a family heirloom. Whilst he is there he meets Ellie and is instantly smitten with her beauty, her acceptance of him and her sweet little daughter.

As they spend more time together the attraction, compassion and friendship turns to sexual awareness, passion, sex and love however Liam's Quest must come first.... but little did he know Ellie had plans of her own too. Two lovers - one desperate to escape her depressing man-made prison and the other's steadfast duty to his family's well-being so the choices they are both forced to make and the outcome of those decisions results in betrayal, heartbreak and revenge. There was a bit of suspense also interesting and likeable secondary characters.

Worth a credit? I liked it but just didn't love it, it was entertaining but not captivating and, although it was a well-paced listen, there were certain things Liam did whilst in London that were funny yes, but so stupid and unrealistic that it made him out to be a fool which, being a Captain in the Highland Guards, he certainly wasn't. Bottom line - I missed the 'Alpha' type hero, I didn't like the heroine's actions BUT overall it was good listen that made me smile - so I guess that's a YES.

Dreadful Narration

The narrator's speed and attempted accents were so bad I couldn't continue far enough to form an opinion on the book itself. I strongly recommend giving this narrator a very wide berth having struggled to reach chapter four of this torturous offering.

A great story

I listened to this book via Audible.com. The story kept my attention throughout. I listen to audio books as I do my daily walk and listening to this book made my 2hr walks go really quickly. Stephen Leather writes cracker books. So much action, so much intrigue. Highly recommended

First time listening to this series and narrator..

Very pleased with this choice. Similar to Jack Reacher and John puller series. Great story line overall

Just great!

Again having listened to the first in this series I couldn't wait to listen to this book and was not disappointed. This is one book I could not put down, they are addictive "I need the next one asap".

Another great Stephen Leather novel

I had read the first Dan Shepherd and really liked it plus it love this author. I had been looking for new book and saw this. The book had a couple of different plot lines which kept it interesting and there were some definite surprises at the end. Download this, you won't regret it.

Really enjoyable story with good narration

Fast paced story with a really engaging narrator. I hadn't heard of either the author or the narrator before book 1 of this series but I am a keen fan of both now. I listen to a lot of crime thrillers and they can get a bit obvious, but I particularly enjoy this series, the characters are interesting and the plot is great!

This book is a very long drawn out soap opera.

This book wasnt for you, but who do you think might enjoy it more?

Anyone who hasn't read real crime books. The plot was never developed, it just droned on with banal language and shallow characters.

What could Martina Cole have done to make this a more enjoyable book for you?

Reconsider the lack of any real plot, rewrite it. Fundamentally a serial soap opera.

How could the performance have been better?

. There are so many good crime writers out there. For those of us who enjoy well written crime stories this was dreadful. The narrators voice was like chalk being drawn across a board. The accent horrible.

You didnt love this book... but did it have any redeeming qualities?

Yes, it made me realise how patient I am to have kept listening to it.

Martina cole is one of my favourite authors

Believable narration.. But....

First off five star narration by Annie Aldington.

Surprisingly this is my first Cole book. It's not very often I can't get through a book it took me ages to get though to the end, personally finding the story line, situations and characterizations boring and too repetitive for my taste after initially being hooked in at the beginning, my interest soon ebbed away as the story unfolded.

It felt more like I was reading a script for TV.

To give Cole her due it does get better towards the end but I still stand by an 'ok' score.I felt there just was not enough depth to the story line despite the superb narration.

Been told to try her earlier stuff so will be giving that a go instead.

Seems Martina has run out of ideas, having read most of her books this one is just the same old story and identical characters doing the same jobs, if you are looking for something different then you will be disappointed.
