Short, honest, matches my experience
My adult child has undergone a program of medicated treatment and counseling with Dr. Podesta and her staff for several years. She has responded well, is working and enjoys a solid relationship with her siblings. While Suboxone has been a legal means to treat her addiction to opiates it has seemed over six years to inhibit her full engagement with all that life has to offer. It's difficult to describe, but she can stand at a distance from full societal interaction on this drug. To be fair this undoubtedly involves more than just the Suboxone. As Dr. Podesta argues in her book success in treatment is measured in terms of where the patient began and how far they have come. As AA says, "progress not perfection." No doubt I have seen my daughter go from a life of illicit drug use and reckless behavior to becoming a law abiding-functioning adult during her treatment. Her faith in her physician, her counseling and medication is absolute. This short book is candid, not overly technical and extremely informative. I would strongly recommend any parent who is struggling with a child or relative who is chemically addicted to read it, highlight it and keep it within arms reach.

Once I started reading Hooked I couldn't put it down. It answered every question I've ever had about addiction and what to do about it.
With hundreds of books and many different (and often conflicting) theories on addiction it can be confusing and overwhelming to try to decide what path to take for treatment.
Finally, a no blame, no shame book that offers the most current information that makes sense.
As a therapist and an expert in the field at the biological basis of personality I was very impressed with the science presented in this book. I recommend it to all of my clients who have an addiction or have a loved one, friend or colleague who does. So far, everyone of them has found Hooked to be straightforward and easy to understand and utilize.
Thank you Dr. Podesta for creating a seminal piece of work that can help lay people and professionals in the field understand the dynamics of addiction and what to do about it.
