You won't remember Mr Heming. He showed you round your comfortable home, before you took the plunge and bought it. But all these years later, he still has the key. That's absurd, you laugh. Of all the many hundreds of houses he has sold, why would he still have the key to mine? The answer to that is, he has the keys to them all.

    Creepy, but enjoyable
I bought this audio book based on a bookclub I follow. I read the reviews on audible and decided to give it a go. I liked this audio book. The story is creepy but very entertaining and I enjoyed it. If you like something a little different something with a darker edge then I recommend giving this a go.
I liked the narration. I thought it was entertaining and the voice was good and easy to listen to.
Enjoy and then get your locks changed!
    yawn
    Any additional comments?
I keep on having to rewind this book because no matter how much my inner teacher tells me to pay attention my mind keeps slipping off thinking about other stuff. Really I haven't felt like this since 4th year geography. Good for sending you off to sleep though

Expecting nothing more than silly little cousins and boring farm life, she sneaks along a special suitcase that once belonged to her father. In it, she knows, are the parts of a music box and 16 miniature painted horses, and she thinks maybe she can fit them all back together.
But the countryside has unexpected surprises. When a half-wild and mysterious girl named Angel steals Nell's suitcase, the two girls are united in an adventure of Angel's devising. A friendship horsebook
It was very good book because it tells an unbreakable friendship between Angel and Nell. It all started when Nell went to her aunt's house. She secretly brought a suitcase and when she took it out of the car, a mysterious rider steals her suitcase that once belonged to long gone father. When, she finally meets Angel, she tells a story about a hundred horses! Could this story be true?!

Stephanie Plum is back in an all-new adventure from number-one best-selling author Janet Evanovich.
Stephanie Plum has her sights set on catching a notorious mob boss. If she doesn't take him down, he may take her out. New Jersey bounty hunter Stephanie Plum knows better than to mess with family. But when powerful mobster Salvatore "Uncle Sunny" Sunucchi goes on the lam in Trenton, it's up to Stephanie to find him.
Uncle Sunny is charged with murder for running over a guy (twice), and nobody wants to turn him in - not his poker buddies, not his bimbo girlfriend, not his two right-hand men, Shorty and Moe. Even Trenton's hottest cop, Joe Morelli, has skin in the game, because - just Stephanie's luck - the godfather is his actual godfather. And while Morelli understands that the law is the law, his old-world grandmother, Bella, is doing everything she can to throw Stephanie off the trail.
It's not just Uncle Sunny giving Stephanie the run-around. Security specialist Ranger needs her help to solve the bizarre death of a top client's mother, a woman who happened to play bingo with Stephanie's Grandma Mazur. Before Stephanie knows it, she's working side by side with Ranger and Grandma at the senior centre, trying to catch a killer on the loose - and the bingo balls are not rolling in their favour.
With bullet holes in her car, henchmen on her tail, and a giraffe named Kevin running wild in the streets of Trenton, Stephanie will have to up her game for the ultimate takedown.

    Genres: Fiction, Contemporary
    Publisher's Summary:
After nearly ten years, Joseph Caldwell returns to the literary scene with a rich novel of immense and resonant scope. With Dostoevskyian ambition, Bread for the Baker's Child sets out to probe the large questions of good and evil, culpability and sacrifice, and the meaning of suffering.
In this tale of two lives immutably intertwined, Sister Rachel is a nun in a failing order, a painter with a history of madness, devoted to her dying Mother General. Her brother Phillip is an accountant serving time for embezzlement, a man capable of great violence and anger who has turned his back not simply on the church, but faith as well. They have nothing in common except for a shared childhood tragedy. Or do they?
In this masterful display of structural precision, Caldwell slowly unravels the complementary nature of these two lives - at first glance hermetically sealed from one another - until their shared fate becomes a symbiotic relationship, as though they were two sides of the same coin, intersecting and reflecting one another. Through events operatic in tone and reach, Rachel and Phillip come to redefine our notions of love and kinship, and embody the human need for redemption and forgiveness.

    As expected
    Intense and Thought Provoking
When informed of his sister Aggie's emotional collapse following a tragic fire that had caused the demise of thirty eighth-graders at the school where she was Sister Superior, Phillip 'Peppy' Manrahan was faced with a Heinz dilemma. Aggie, a nun who went by the religious name of Sister Mary Rachel, needed electroconvulsive shock therapy in order to cure her of screaming fits and grief-induced psychosis. Because Phillip held a long-simmering rage and resentment over the lack of respect that his corporation's superiors had shown him, he decided to use his expertise as an accountant to embezzle company funds to pay for Aggie's treatment. His thievery didn't stop there. He continued to cook the company books as a way to endow the Order of the Sisters of the Annunciation with funds for a new wing of the college library and much-needed repairs for their schools, convents, and Motherhouse - more than one million dollars in all. The Order had graciously accepted these donations from their anonymous benefactor, not knowing that he was a thief and Sister Rachel's younger brother. Later, when Phillip heard about the cancellation of an office colleague's health insurance because he had AIDS, Phillip's rage at the company resurfaced, and he resorted to embezzlement again to help Jack. After Jack's death, Phillip was caught for stealing the twenty-three thousand dollars that he had given Jack and was sentenced to prison for four years.
There, Phillip, a handsome gay man in his fifties, became the protector of another inmate, Talford Starbuck, a younger man with a hideous disfigurement. At first, their hooking up was only a sham, designed to protect the fragile Starbuck from other inmates. As time went by, they fell in love. Then, a terrible chain of events caused several deaths and brought about Phillip's condemnation to death row, sentenced to die in the electric chair. At the same time that Phillip was doing his prison time, Sister Rachel was tending to her dying Mother General in an old mansion in an unnamed location.

    Publisher's Summary:
The Island of Yew is divided into five kingdoms, the central of which, Spor, is a place ravaged by crimes and robbers. One day, a young girl, Sesely, living in the nicer kingdom of Heg, is enjoying a picnic with some companions. A fairy comes down and begs them to help change her into a human. Sesely and her friends, amazed, obey her orders and soon they find themselves in the company of a young man, named Prince Marvel. Prince Marvel desires to go on adventures and become a hero, which he is able to do easily enough in crime-ridden Yew. He faces the bandits of Wul-Takim, the Royal Dragon of King Terribus, a strange mix-up in the land of Twi, a fake magician Kwytoffle, and the Red Rogue of Dawna. In all, Prince Marvel spends a very busy and successful year in his mortal form and turns back into a fairy when the year is up.
    L. Frank Baum (1856-1919) was an American author of children's books, most famous for his "The Wonderful Wizard of Oz." Baum wrote 13 sequels to his first Oz book and still has a huge fan base to this day. The Enchanted Island of Yew is one of Baum's many non-Oz fantasy works.
    Members Reviews:
    A great frank baum story
Full of magic, and fairies and evil hearted villains, this a good read for young adults with a love of gentle adventure stories.
    A true heroic romp
Prince Marvell, the fairy on safari, is unlike any of Baum's other protagonists: a romantic hero, wandering freely through the semi-civilized countryside, looking for good adventure, turning evildoers into good guys. His sidekick, Nerle, is another unique character in Baum; the only one I can think of who's anything like him is Sacho in THE SEA FAIRIES, and they're not VERY similar. Sacho forgives those who hurt him; Nerle actually thanks them.
This book is not without flaws. Like so much of Baum's lower-quality work it suffers from aimlessly-wandering-around syndrome. Oz books are almost all essentially wandering around, but in the better ones like WIZARD it's not aimless and there's more going on as well. This is like DOROTHY AND THE WIZARD and ROAD and most of EMERALD CITY--essentially plotless, a riding tour. Also, the whole Twi adventure is way too long.
Another reviewer criticised the illustrations and the manufacturing quality. The original first edition of YEW had only a few (five?) color plates, plus some early editions had orange line-drawings stamped over the text. I have seen several recent very-badly-illustrated republications of YEW and this may be one. But it's most likely worth it anyway; you'll be glad to have Prince Marvell and Nerle in your family.
Great for middle schoolers that have high reading levels
My daughter reads at a high reading level. We really struggle to find appropriate books for her since she is 7th grade. This is actually at the lower end of her lexile, but it is closer then most books, even adult. She really enjoyed the story a lot. Made me want to pick it up and give it a read. She is now reading through the Wizard of Oz collection.
Fractured Fairy Tales, Good Message, Weak Plot, No Suspense
This was a quick and easy read that felt more like a sequence of fractured fairy tales than a novel. There are some interesting bits: gender reversal, overcoming the bad guys by helping them, a kingdom consisting of nothing but twins acting in unison, and a fake wizard.

    Publisher's Summary:
Inspired by a series of instructive letters written by Austen to a novel-writing niece, Letters to Alice is an epistolary novel in which an important modern writer responds to her niece's complaint that Jane Austen is boring and irrelevant. By turns passionate and ironic, "Aunt Fay" makes Alice think - not only about books and literature, but also life and culture.
    Critic Reviews:
"Wise, sharp, informative.... Shrewd and funny." (A. S. Byatt, Times Literary Supplement)
"A study of a writer (and reader) thinking aloud about art and civilization.... It should be required reading, a prerequisite for students of literature." (Hilma Wolitzer, New York Times Book Review)
    Members Reviews:
Like having another sharp, witty aunt.
I have seven aunts. Like my mum, they are all witty and loving. "Letters to Alice on First Reading Jane Austen" made me feel like I have a new dear aunt, brilliant and a bit odd, who will tell me the straight skinny. I know she's looking out for me. Lucky Alice (she doesn't know how lucky she is).
as much about literature as Austen, and a great read
Written in the form of witty letters to a niece taking an undergraduate English Lit course, this book attempts to bring insight to the work of Jane Austen in particular and to answer those who question the relevance of literature in general. First published in 1984, there is no mention of deconstruction's effect on academic departments, but otherwise the author seems to address most issues pertinent to the reading and writing of fiction, beginning with a wonderful chapter on the lovely metaphoric City of Invention. Elsewhere, Weldon discusses non-literature, Latin, a writer's relatives and friends, feminism, literary truth, critics and invention. Austen is here as well, and the author enlightens with her discussions of Austen's life, times, works, style and death. There are many wonderful passages, and I especially admired the analyses of Austen's work, but I would have liked more of this, and in more detail. At one point the author writes: "[Jane Austen] knows how to end a scene, an episode, a chapter, before beginning the next: when to allow the audience to rest, when to and how to underline a statement, when to mark time with idle paragraphs, allowing what went before to settle, before requiring it to inform what comes next. It is a very modern technique. It requires ... consciousness of audience, and audience reaction." It should be evident from that passage that Weldon is an elegant, insightful and articulate writer, and I would have *loved* to have seen extended examples and analysis of specific Austen passages to illustrate the points made in the preceding excerpt.
Ultimately, I didn't think the niece's subplot worked. Weldon first advises her not to attempt to write a novel, and then advises her to write it, and then advises her about dealing with the publisher when the novel is not only published but very successful. What's Weldon's greater meaning? Why would this undergrad's novel be published and who is reading it? Is it a condemnation or just a device to drive the conceit?
I learned a lot about Jane Austen and about writing, and got some help for the next time someone tells me it's a waste of time to read a novel.

They can change the future; they can alter the past. They can make big money, they can save the world, and they can get away with murder over and over again.
Danielle Leaf grew up believing she was safe. Now she knows she was wrong.
Award-winning author Jon Evans returns with a compulsive, fast-paced story that examines issues of Third World exploitation and the extreme edge of anti-capitalist activism. Invisible Armies is Cold War suspense for the modern age, a thriller that looks behind the power of protests and the politics of big business.
    Editorial Reviews:
Jon Evans "travel thriller" Invisible Armies transports listeners to the far-flung reaches of India, Paris, and London - an international scope which isn't surprising when one considers that the author is a bit of a globetrotter himself, having (at press time) traveled to six continents.
Providing the audiobooks female protagonist with a complementary mouthpiece, Lucinda Gainey performs this modern tale of computer hacking and global intrigue in multifaceted voices that all sound thoroughly invested in the story arc. In her voiceover projects, Gaineys mantra is "breathing life into words!" She has a BFA in acting and studies with voice aficionado Nancy Wilson, experience that clearly manifests in her sophisticated delivery of the fictional material.

    Brilliant!!
Would you consider the audio edition of The State We're In to be better than the print version?
    Can not comment
What was one of the most memorable moments of The State We're In?
The shock ending.. An emotional roller coaster!
If you could take any character from The State We're In out to dinner, who would it be and why?
Dean because he sounds an interesting character
    Any additional comments?
    Must read!
    Grim
Would you say that listening to this book was time well-spent? Why or why not?
Not really,to be fair this is not my usual genre. I went off on a whim and chose this as it was an audible recommended read. I do not recommend it particularly. I didn't really care for most of the characters, it was very cliched towards the end, and made a lot of the classic mistakes you are always told not to do when story-writing. Also, the style of narration was a bit annoying. Short sentences and that annoying inflection at the end of each sentence, like it was a question! Particularly with Joanna's character.
What will your next listen be?
The book Thief or Jeanette Wintersons "Why be happy when you can be normal"
Would you be willing to try another one of Antonia Beamishs performances?
    Possibly.
Was The State We're In worth the listening time?
    Not IMHO
    Any additional comments?
    Chick lit.
    loved it
I loved the characters. It was hopeful and had a feel good factor. Also had some unexpected twists & turns.
    Quick and Easy holiday read
I chose this book as a quick and easy, brain dead holiday read and it served its purpose.
It tells the story of Joanna and Dean, two very different people from very different families meeting on a transatlantic flight. In the time it takes to fly from London to Chicago these two strangers change the direction of each others lives.
Joanna, a thirty something hopeless romantic, thinks life is passing her by. She is set to sabotage the wedding of her ex-fiancé that she believes she wrongly jilted a few years earlier and wants to get together again. Despite Dean's best efforts to remain a stranger, Joanna confides in Dean but his initial disinterest is fuelled by his own issues stemming from his tragic early life and propensity to treat women as disposable.
The story is told from the perspective of both Joanna and Dean, as well as skipping back decades to look at their parents' stories and the way their very different upbringings have shaped their personalities. The story is slow to take off and even when it does, it doesn't reach any dizzy heights.
