Gone Girl meets Before I Go to Sleep in this riveting psychological thriller about a grieving mother who finds out years after her daughters death that her child may still be alive.
It's been eight grief-filled years since Geniver Loxley lost her daughter, Beth. Once a writer, Gen has settled into a life of half-hearted teaching while her husband, Art, makes his name and their fortune - and pressures her into yet another round of IVF. For Gen, battle-scared from years of failed attempts to get pregnant with a second baby, this feels like a cruel attempt to replace Beth. Life without her child is inconceivable, unbearable - but still it goes on.
And then a woman arrives on Gen's doorstep, saying the very thing she longs to hear: that her daughter was not stillborn, but was spirited away as a healthy child, and is out there, waiting to be found. So why is Art reluctant to get involved? To save his wife from further hurt? Or is it something else...something more sinister? What is the truth about Beth Loxley?
Close My Eyes is a deeply chilling and addictively compelling story that grabs on to the listener and doesnt let go.

    Great listen!
Second book by this author and loved it. Admittedly the story is far fetched and plenty of stupid moves abound, stillllll I totally loved it. The narrator was wonderful and I could've listened on and on!
    Wow!
Kept me on the edge of my seat! Twists and turns right up to the the end! I loved this book
Horrible story, not worth the time
I always feel like such a jerk giving a horrible review. The author put a lot of time and effort into the book as did the narrator. That being said, I am livid that I spent time listening to this book. It has to be one of the most horrible books ever written. The story was extremely predictable. The main character was devastatingly stupid, written as though she was a man's caricature of a woman. There was nothing that grabbed my attention. It was slow, dull and miserable.
    GREAT narration, very engaging story!
The narrator switches in and out of dialects effortlessly and gives the story an immediacy that i'm not sure i would have had from reading it myself. She made it totally come alive.
Granted, the main character is so obtuse at times that you just want to give her a good shake. But it works for the story.
I really wanted to listen to the whole audio in one sitting -- I couldn't wait to get back in the car!!!
    OMG
Would you consider the audio edition of Close My Eyes to be better than the print version?
I am not sure because I didn't read the print version but I ABSOLUTELY loved the audio edition. It took me a while to get used to the narrator and her accent but after that I really couldn't put the book down.
What did you like best about this story?
    The complex plot line.
What about Marisa Calins performance did you like?
She made all of the characters stand out. Despite it being just one narrator for this story she made me feel connected to each of the characters and used appropriate dialect.
Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?
It kept me on the edge of my seat. While I realize some people may not feel the same I enjoyed earning each new detail as I continued on throughout the story.
    Any additional comments?
I really loved this book! It surprised me how much I enjoyed it.

First ladies are supposed to be dignified background figures, quietly supportive of their husbands' agendas. Above all, they're not supposed to act out or cause even a whiff of scandal. Of course, reality often overrides conventional wisdom, and this book shows how far from the prim ideal many of the Presidents' wives have strayed. Part irreverent portrait gallery, part exuberant exposé, Feisty First Ladies and Other Unforgettable White House Women introduces a remarkable array of wild women, from Martha Washington, who opposed her own husband's presidential election; to Abraham Lincoln's eccentric wife, Mary; to rebellious daughters like Patti Davis who were the tabloid fodder of their day. Laugh-out-loud funny and filled with amazing stranger-than-fiction facts from our American history, Feisty First Ladies journeys into the realm of the eclectic sisterhood whose outrageous words and deeds have rocked the fusty old foundations of the White House - and the nation!

Taking the White House Beyond Expectations
At some point in your education, you were probably asked to memorize a list of American presidents. But how much have you learned about their wives?
The FLOTUS has the eyes of the nation on her, as she fulfills her duties as wife-in-chief, but is usually promptly forgotten.
Feisty First Ladies has details and anecdotes about the First Ladies that will shock and surprise you. Youve probably heard that Mary Todd Lincoln was eccentric, but did you know Julia Gardiner Tyler jokingly called herself "Queen of America" and would greet visiting dignitaries with a crown and a contingent of handmaidens?
There is so much entertaining trivia, and inspiring activism in the history of First Ladies, that its practically your patriotic duty to learn more.

    Publisher's Summary:
In 1916, Mexican bandit Pancho Villa raided the southwestern border town of Columbus, New Mexico. Three hundred American soldiers fought four hundred attackers in a battle that ended with one of the last cavalry charges in U.S. history. Outraged, Congress ordered the U.S. Army to invade Mexico in pursuit of Villa. For the first time, trucks and airplanes accompanied U. S. cavalry into combat, practicing for Americas entry into World War I. Influenced by Sam Peckinpah, Rambo-creator David Morrell dramatizes this epic era in American history through the eyes of a civilian scout old enough to have been in the Civil War, the Indian wars, Cuba, and the Philippines. Knowing that his ways are finished, he teaches a young recruit about the past, at a cost he never expected to pay.

A book from my childhood, rediscovered
I wasn't sure if I had read this before, but it only took about 15 pages to remember that I had, perhaps 40 years ago. It was a bit more downbeat than I remembered (perhaps because I was a teenager when I first read it, and everything seemed more upbeat.) Anyway, I felt it evoked the time and place very well.
    Good book!
One of the better books I've read and very well developed and researched by Morrell. Reminds me of his writing in the
original Rambo book. Not many people know that Rambo died well in that book and the story was fantastic and complex
as opposed to the movie(s). The characters in Reveille are well done and just beg to be in a mini series or movie
that stays true to this novel. I recommend this to anyone.
Interesting topic from a great author - MOVIE? (Spoiler Alert)
Interesting topic from a great author; interesting crossroads of history, the end of the old west and the dawn of the industrial age war in full fury. Loved the characters but hated, I mean HATED the ending. Since this was an early book for Mr Morrell maybe it is time for him to re-look this book and re-write the ending. I like the way the old guy is "Possibly?" seen later in El Paso, TX charging across into Mexico but the death of his understudy is pointless. This being said, (LOVE THIS AUTHOR and his spy novels), this book would be an INCREDIBLE MOVIE! (with some fleshing out of the story and ending; IMHO). I can see Tom Selleck as the Old Army Scout or possibly Kevin Kosner. Robert Duvall would have been great for this 15 years ago. Not sure for the younger partâThat is why there are auditions I supposeâ Well worth the cost of a E-Book (Kindle) purchase,
Not Up To Morrell's Writing Standards
But the subject he picked was very interesting for family reasons. Might not grab many but I was interested. Also, the Old Scout and Young Rookie is very timeworn and I did not get the Old Scout's behavior at all. Lot of holes in the historical backstory of Old Scout. Was he always a Scout? Did he just enlist for the Philippines campaign? As what? Private? And if he was a scout for the Philippines, how in the world did he know about the islands on the far side of his world of experience?
    Five Stars
    Love westerns, loved this one.

Emboldened by the seductive cadences of the shore, the women begin to realize just how much their lives, and friendships, have been shaped by the choices they made one fateful night on the beach eight years earlier - and the secrets that now threaten to surface.

    Long and Drawn Out
What could have made this a 4 or 5-star listening experience for you?
Narrator did a good job however the story was long and drawn out (see below)
What do you think your next listen will be?
    The Longest Ride
Did the narration match the pace of the story?
    Narrator did a good job
What reaction did this book spark in you? Anger, sadness, disappointment?
    Disappointment
    Any additional comments?
The narrator (Heather Henderson) did a good job. A beach read about three gals --friends since childhood and have all gone separate ways. Pretty long and drawn out ---
Kate (Phili), successful lawyer, pregnant, and boyfriend has just broken off their upcoming marriage; Vanessa (NY) is a mom with 2 yr old daughter and her husband has kissed another woman (she talks about this the entire book); Dani (San Fran), is an addict (drugs and drinking) throughout the book. Cannot get her act together and has just been fired from a book store (author). But she is always drunk or drugged, so cannot write. Pretty sad and depressed bunch!
After the bachelorette party is called off they all plan to meet in Avalon, NJ (this spot was never great, in my opinion). The book is centered on Colin (Katies twin brother) everyone thinking they caused his death years ago ---guilt, regrets, and secrets. Goes back and forth from years ago until present tense. There is some humor to the story which will get you through.
Summer read of three girls and relationships
Is there anything you would change about this book?
I would have liked to have more of a storyline; it felt sluggish to me.
If youve listened to books by Meg Donohue before, how does this one compare?
This was my first Meg Donohue book. Seeing reviews it's not her best and definitely a no brainer easy listen/read.
Have you listened to any of Heather Hendersons other performances before? How does this one compare?
Not that I remember. She is very good in this audio.
Was All the Summer Girls worth the listening time?
Not really for me; it was draggy in my opinion of what I enjoy. Doesn't mean I won't select another book of hers.
    Any additional comments?
I wish she would have had more of "something" in this book. Descriptive scenery perhaps.

    Publisher's Summary:
The Lady from Guatemala is a collection of stories from one of the most distinguished short story writers in English. From first to last, V.S. Pritchett's writing displays a shrewd understanding of class and character and a quick ear for the inner, deeper rhythms of dialogue. His subject matter is always human nature, its peculiarity, its tenacity...
His prose is clear, his observation complex and multi-layered. Pritchett's stories invite and merit re-reading and, what is more important, they encourage us to look again at those parts of life we like to think are settled.
Victor Sawdon Pritchett (1900-1997) was born over a toyshop in 1900 and, much to his everlasting distaste, was named after Queen Victoria. A writer and critic, his is widely reputed to be one of the best short story writers of all time, with the rare ability to capture the extraordinary strangeness of everyday life. He died in 1997.
    Members Reviews:
    An amazing collection
I can't write a review long enough to do this collection justice. Pritchett rarely travels into the realm of fantasy or the surreal, instead choosing to write modern tales of English life. Some of his strongest works focus on the post-war years and involve affairs and the trials of married life. Pritchett wrote in such perfect detail that it's easy to imagine his characters as real people. His character interactions and their emotions truly drive the story. Excellent collection. I'm sure I'll read more.

    Great Book
I actually only got this book after i saw the movie trailer and decided to get it before i saw the movie. The book isnt bad. Telling the story of two teenagers after an Alien invasion. Its also part romance which i wasnt expecting but its not too much. I would definitely recommend. Hopefully the movie lives up to the book. Gotta get the second part now.
I suspect it will split opinions
I've got to say I liked it, I'm glad I read it, but I suspect this one will split opinions. This is a decent story with the narration split primarily between two of the young, teenage protagonists. And this is the crux I think of why some will like it and some will struggle. If you're comfortable with the teen-movie like delivery of the narrators then I think you will enjoy it very much. It's a gripping story that, consistent with the apocalyptic theme pulls few punches.
I think those who find the current teen-movie style a little grating may not find this so easy to like. Yes, okay I admit it I'm one of those who are maybe a generation or two older so it's not my favourite style and it did grate on me at times. But, this is the story of young adults cast into a tough situation so it makes eminent sense to write it this way and while it's been some time since I felt qualified to comment on how a teenager thinks these days it felt realistic enough to me. The characters, particularly Cassie, trying to come to terms with all the normal things teenagers have to get to grips with on top of the slight inconvenience of an alien invasion.
There are some clever twists and turns in the plot, plenty of points at which you are left guessing, occasional humour and some good interplay between the characters giving it enough depth to be entertaining, exciting and a worthy piece of entertainment. I don't see it winning any prizes but it's a very decent listen.
Hormonal teenagers with M16 assault rifles . . . you don't need the aliens to make this one scary for us parents :-)
    Enjoyable and a bit different.
Wasn't expecting much here as it's not something I would normally listen to and it was a sale item. But I enjoyed it and recommend it.
    Not just for young adults
I am a 53-year-old man and I bought this without realising it is a YA book. Actually I found this to be one of the most enjoyable books I have read or listened too all year. The writing is excellent: the characters are well-developed and interesting; the plot is very engaging; and it is very funny in places.

    Publisher's Summary:
"Mrs. Flax was happiest when she was leaving a place, but I wanted to stay put long enough to fall down crazy and hear the Word of God. I always called my mother Mrs. Flax."
So begins this extraordinary first novel about one wild year in the life of 14-year-old Charlotte Flax, when she and her sister Kate move with Mrs. Flax into a sleepy 1960's Massachusetts town. Mrs. Flax is a woman who wears polka-dot dresses and serves hors d'oeuvres for dinner every night, and Kate is a child who basically wants to be a fish.
And then there's Charlotte, who in Patty Dann's hands, is transformed into a young woman of infinite whim and variety. Charlotte's main ambition in life is to become a saint, preferably martyred, though she's Jewish. She's smitten with the shy young caretaker at the convent at the top of the hill. Dann has created a young girl who accepts the unkindness of the mad universe in which she's whirling and takes it on with a savage glee.
Charlotte Flax is like no one you have ever met - and someone you know very well.
    Editorial Reviews:
Editors Select, April 2013 - As a nerdy book type, I always thought I had a pretty good handle on all of the book-to-movie adaptations out thereuntil this little gem was presented in a meeting two months ago. I had zero idea that one of my all-time favorite movies started out as a book, but now I cant WAIT to listen to it. Patty Danns debut novel was a small hit when it released back in 1986, earning the attention of book clubs and filmmakers alike, but the success of the movie starring Winona Ryder and Cher may have wiped away cultural knowledge of the book. Regardless, reviews of the original work continue to be glowing, and Im more than excited to experience the tumultuous Flax family in narrator Elizabeth Evans capable hands.
    Members Reviews:
    Finally!
Oh gosh. I got so unbelievably excited when I saw that this was finally going to be available from Audible. When I was a teenager I was in LOVE with this movie. Who didn't secretly want a mom like Cher? But I was still pretty hesitant going into this - 80s cheesiness is one thing. The idea of "seeing" this in print was kind of scary. After all, what if the movie were better, or worse yet, what if the book hadn't held up over the years?
I'm here to tell you that the book and the movie are both equally good. This is a horse of a different color to be sure, but after listening to it I can honestly say that one doesn't eclipse the other. They're both basically their own thing. And as far as I'm concerned Charlotte's coming of age story is just as funny and touching now as it was when it was first written.
I can honestly say I wasn't expecting this book to be as fun as it was. There were moments when I was laughing out loud on my commute to work, and there were moments where I just wanted to sit and be still for a moment because Patty Dann made me remember what it was like to be young, when you felt so much and the world seemed so big. Charlotte is unique in the world of teen fiction. She's the type of character you can see evolving right before your eyes. I loved seeing how she learned to navigate the world around her
Over all this was a great listen. I got everything I wanted from it and then some.

Twenty-one years ago, when a conductor was poisoned and the Questura sent a man to investigate, readers first met Commissario Guido Brunetti. Since 1992s Death at La Fenice, Donna Leon and her shrewd, sophisticated, and compassionate investigator have been delighting readers around the world. For her millions of fans, Leons novels have opened a window into the private Venice of her citizens, a world of incomparable beauty, family intimacy, shocking crime, and insidious corruption.
This internationally acclaimed, bestselling series is widely considered one of the best ever written, and William Heinemann is thrilled to be publishing the twenty-second instalment, The Golden Egg, in April 2013.
When making routine enquiries into a possible bribery case that could embarrass the mayor a humiliation Vice-Questore Patta is very keen to avoid Commissario Brunetti receives a call from his wife, Paola, who is evidently very upset. The middle-aged deaf mute with the mental age of a child who helped out at the Brunettis dry cleaners has been found dead an accidental overdose of his mothers sleeping pills and for some reason Paola is distraught by the news. To the neighbourhood he was just the boy who helped out, but nobody knew much about him not even his name. That a soul could have lived such a joyless life is too much for Paola to bear, and she asks Guido if he can find out what happened. It is a surprise to Brunetti just how little was known about this man-child there are no official records to show he even existed. The mans mother is angry and contradictory when questioned about his death, and Brunetti senses that there much more to the story than she is willing to tell. With the help of Inspector Vianello and the ever-resourceful Signorina Elettra, perhaps Brunetti can get to the truth and find some measure of solace.
    Critic Reviews:
"Donna Leon is better than everSuperb." (WI Life)
"If theres a writer for whom the law of diminishing returns has been revoked, its Donna Leon. The doyenne of Italian crime fiction, whose stamina in returning time and again to her Venetian beat is matched only by her curiosity, she has proved herself, in the space of 22 titles, not only an able detective novelist, but the author of something more substantialIt is one of the joys of Leons work that she can take readers into the sinister heart of Italy, and yet, in the person of Brunetti and his companions, convince us that not all is lost." (Rosemary Goring, The Herald)
    Members Reviews:
    A pleasant meander in Venice
I enjoy these Brunetti books not because they are intense thrillers or clever investigations but for the characters who populate the pages as they seem like old friends whose foibles and day-to-day lives make pleasant listening. There is a crime to be detected in this book but it is incidental to the pleasure of hearing about Brunetti's famiiy, his colleagues, the lovely food he eats and the atmosphere of Venice that pervades these books. David Rintoul is a great narrator.
Another great story by Donna Leon
What did you like most about The Golden Egg?
The story has a slow place but this is not to the detriment of the novel because all Donna Leon's stories use this pace although there are moments of 'action' towards the conclusion.

    This captured me
What did you love best about Commuters?
Commuters is well-paced, fluid and captures the family drama of circumstances that I never expect to encounter, but were interesting to confront in Emily Tedrowe's writing.
What did you like best about this story?
Some of the character development proceeded in ways I would not have expected.
What does Norman Dietz bring to the story that you wouldnt experience if you just read the book?
He kept to a rhythm that enhanced some of the care the author took in setting the story out, things I would have missed if I just blasted through it, as I do some things I read.
Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?
It's more character-based, and it presents itself comfortably, so it engages you over time.
    Any additional comments?
Definitely worth the time to listen to the author, as set forth by the narrator.
    I just don't care
I listened to this for 3 hours and finally quit because I simply didn't care about any of it. They aren't bad people and I'd probably have a nice chat with Winnie if I bumped into her in a coffee shop, but I could not listen to any more of their lives. It is ordinary people living ordinary lives of happinesses, confusions and struggle. I've already got one of those. Mr. Dietz' careful enunciation didn't make it any more riveting.
