Title: The Management Style of the Supreme Beings

Author: Tom Holt

Narrator: Ray Sawyer

Format: Unabridged

Length: 13 hrs and 24 mins

Language: English

Release date: 06-20-17

Publisher: Hachette Audio UK

Genres: Fiction, Humor

Publisher's Summary:

When the Supreme Being and his son decide that being supreme isn't for them anymore, it's inevitable that things get a bit of a shake-up.

It soon becomes apparent that our new owners, the Venturi brothers, have a very different perspective on all sorts of things. Take Good and Evil, for example. For them it's an outdated concept that never worked particularly well in the first place.

Unfortunately, the sudden disappearance of right and wrong, while welcomed by some, raises certain concerns amongst those still attached to the previous team's management style.

In particular there's one of the old gods who didn't move out with the others. A reclusive chap, he lives somewhere up north, and only a handful even believe in him.

But he's watching. And he really does need to know if you've been naughty or nice.

Out of this World

Irreverent maybe. Not laugh out loud but funny. Classic twist of rolls. Holt pushes the bounderies to another realm. Loved it.

Disappointing

I love Tom Holt I have all his books so I was super excited for a new release but sadly no, It lost me i'm afraid it just bored me and i got 1 hr from the end and couldn't be bothered to finish it.

Truly awful - wish I hadn't wasted the credit

I have been a fan of Tom Holt for many years but this was definitely not up to previous standards.

I have listened to dozens of audiobooks and rarely fail to finish one. With this book, I couldn't get more than a couple of hours in.

There is little by way of plot and what there is progresses at a pedestrian pace. The characters are two-dimensional and I could not feel the least interest in their exploits.

The narrator does his best with the material but overall this is simply disappointing.

Original and entertaining

Imaginative, original, funny and thoughtful. Combined with a great performance it was thoroughly enjoyable. Perhaps a sequel in the future?

Language: English

Release date: 06-01-17

Publisher: Audible Studios for Bloomsbury

Publisher's Summary:

Brideshead, bon-bons, cucumber sandwiches - and now a murder. In the decadent world of Oxford University, c.1985, Pimms, punting and ball gowns are de rigeur. Ursula Flowerbutton, a studious country girl, arrives for her first term, anticipating nothing more sinister than days spent poring over history books - and, perhaps, an invitation to a ball. But when she discovers a body, Ursula is catapulted into a murder investigation.

Determined to bag her first scoop for the famous student newspaper Cherwell, Ursula enlists the help of glamorous American student Nancy Feingold to unravel the case. While navigating a whirl of black-tie parties and secret dining societies, the girls discover a surfeit of suspects. From broken-hearted boyfriends to snobby Sloanes, lovelorn librarians to dishy dons, none can be presumed innocent. Clueless meets Agatha Christie in this wickedly funny tale of high society, low morals and a middle class girl, the first book in Plum Sykes' irresistible new series.

Members Reviews:

Satirical but also factual

Any additional comments?

I listened to this book while driving back home from Oxford University for the summer and the combination of slightly caricature-esque characters as well as the well developed setting of the novel made me laugh out loud at points. The Oxford setting is very true to reality even if it is portrayed in the 80s. The storyline was gripping and while dealing with murder managed to remain light and entertaining to the end. The narration too was very well done, with each character easily differentiated by the narrator adding to the character development. Highly recommend for those who appreciate mystery novels but are not wanting anything too heavy.

Just too sweet

There is something very silly about it. If you want something that does not tax your brain this is it.

:)

A slow Start but really interesting once you get into it, if you love gossip then you'll love this

How did this get published

What would have made Party Girls Die in Pearls better?

Nothing - the book is dreadful.

Would you ever listen to anything by Plum Sykes again?

Never ever.

How could the performance have been better?

Performance was fine but the material was so awful that she could not overcome the material.

What reaction did this book spark in you? Anger, sadness, disappointment?

It annoys me that this get published and made into an audio book when it is clearly rubbish of the first order. She is well connected and has important friends so her book gets published and gets loads of publicity. One review compared it to Agatha Christie - which is laughable if you are being kind.

Any additional comments?

Do not waste your time or money or credit.

Awful

The reader sounded half drunk throughout the whole book. Very, very badly read. And a fairly lame storyline

Title: The Lucky Dog Matchmaking Service

Author: Beth Kendrick

Narrator: Amy Rubinate

Format: Unabridged

Length: 7 hrs and 43 mins

Language: English

Release date: 05-30-17

Publisher: Ideal Audiobooks

Genres: Fiction, Humor

Publisher's Summary:

From Beth Kendrick comes a hilarious and heartwarming story about bad dogs and the women who love them....

Lara Madigan has a gift. She can help you find your soul mate - your canine soul mate, that is. As a dog trainer with a soft spot for strays, she's found the perfect home for sulky Shih Tzus, broken-down Border collies, and diabolical Dalmatians. But while she'll always make room for one more rescue mutt, she's not sure she's ready to commit to another human being - especially after her long-term boyfriend drops the bomb: He's not a dog person.

Horrified and temporarily homeless, Lara and her furry pack move in with her mother, a wealthy fashionista who forbids even a single drop of drool. As word gets around the exclusive gated community, Lara is overwhelmed with demands for her services. A model wants personal training for her overweight "flabrador"; an aging socialite preps her pedigreed puppy for dog show domination. If Lara can survive the breakup, the outrageous requests of her high-maintenance clientele, and her dogs' systematic destruction of her mother's McMansion, she might finally find the rescue dog who rescues her in return - by leading her straight to the guy who could be her perfect match.

Critic Reviews:

"Kendrick not only shines in portraying the subtleties of female friendships, but also at rendering the unbreakable bond between man (or woman) and dog.... Kendrick has a...talent for matchmaking: pairing her winsome heroine and her delightful group of canines in the service of a tale of nurturing ones true calling and rekindling relationships." (Publishers Weekly)

Members Reviews:

Good story-bad ending

I wanted to read this because I really liked Nearlyweds and some of her other books. Her other novels are full of humor and romantic twists.

This book started strong. The couple of Lara and Evan struggle to make a new life in a new home with her five dogs. The dogs can be destructive, but Lara has a way of dealing with them. Evan doesn't. They break up twenty percent of the way through the story. Lara eventually moves in with her mother.

Kendrick can write some quick witty banter. The conversations or arguements between Lara and her mother Justine provide that fun banter.

It seemed like I waited for the story to begin while I was in the midst of the story.

I still enjoyed the story and the characters, dog and human, to stick with it.

I didn't care for the ending. I felt the business she was so devoted to got no mention in the final chapters. I really felt the story ended three chapters before the book did. I don't know if she had to pad it out to justify the cover price. I can't see how her editors would think the reader needed the end it got. The unnecesary end ruined this for me.

Adorable Puppy-Lit!

Having grown up with a mostly absent father and a sometimes overly critical mother, Lara Madigan has always been more comfortable with, and trusting of dogs than with people, with the exception of her best friend Kerri and her live-in boyfriend Evan. Unfortunately, when the dogs take over her house and home, it drives a wedge between Lara and Evan.

All will be revealed...Ideal for those who are allergic to corporate jargon and will throw a sickie before having to play a trust game with colleagues.

Members Reviews:

Wonderful, you really think its them. Woof!

All these books take me back to being a young boy who wanted to get out there and follow in the adventures of the Famous Five. Bit suspicious about the age of Timmy. The stories are great and the characters really well painted. The miles flew by in the car...

Annoying and waste of listening time

A really annoying story about how the Famous Five have turned into corporate mainstream employees and win the day by over hearing a piece of information that they are able to act upon. Not worth your time listening.

Title: Virgin Heat

Subtitle: Key West Capers, Book 5

Author: Laurence Shames

Narrator: Jem Matzan

Format: Unabridged

Length: 8 hrs and 36 mins

Language: English

Release date: 04-03-17

Publisher: Laurence Shames

Ratings: 4.5 of 5 out of 7 votes

Genres: Fiction, Humor

Publisher's Summary:

Which is more powerful: romance or revenge?

Mafia princess Angelina Amaro has only ever loved one man - and even that lone affair was never consummated. Why not? Because her would-be lover, Sal Martucci, fled into the Witness Protection Program after ratting out Big Paul, Angelina's father. Not a great way to begin life with the in-laws....

But when Sal is discovered, a decade later, working as a bartender in Key West, the wildly dysfunctional Amaro clan heads south - one member with love on her mind, the others with murder in their hearts. With an improbable team of allies - Aunt Rose and Uncle Louie and the relentlessly romantic and flamboyant Michael-Angelina sets out to quench her passion before Daddy quenches Sal. And before you can say Romeo and Juliet, the Southernmost City becomes the setting for a touching and hilarious tale of love, the Mob, underdogs rising, bad guys redeemed, and, oh, some incidental cross-dressing.

Members Reviews:

Will Angelina find her true love?

Virgin Heat is a cocktail; Angelina Amaro is approaching thirty, a virgin hot for a bartender, whose hands she sees in her Uncle Louieâs home video mixing the drink in Key West. The hands look familiar â they look like the hands of her one true love, Sal from ten years earlier. Angelina secretly leaves New York and her father, Mafia godfather Paul Amaro, to search for Sal in Key West. The problem? Sal betrayed Paul Amaro and sent him to prison for nine years making him number one on the Mafia hit list. Sal has hidden behind plastic surgery and the Witness Protection Program ever since.

So begins another Laurence Shamesâ tale with the same wonderfully descriptive writing, funny dialogue and great quirky characters as the other Key West Capers. Will Angelina find her true love? Will Paul Amaro get his revenge? Will Sal escape with his life? And why is Uncle Louie dressing as a woman, his man boobs fitting snuggly in those brassiere cups?

Ziggy ... but it ain't Stardust!

Another 5-star book by Laurence Shames. This time the mafiosa comes to Key West -- along with many other characters. Imagine a 27-year old virgin daughter of a mafia boss, and imagine her waiting a decade to .... well, you will just have to read the book to find out more. Me, well ... I am moving on to book 6 and expecting more giggles and well-thoughtout surprises.

Meh.

It wasn't terrible, just kinda blah. Full of stereotypes and characters I didn't really care for one way or another. I did finish it, so it wasn't a total waste.

A masterpiece of wordsmithing

This is the first Laurence Shames novel I read, but after finishing it I purchased four more of his works. Granted, this book will never win the Nobel prize for literature, but his use of words is nothing short of spectacular. After reading the first ten pages or so, I got a yellow Hi-Liter and started at the beginning again, this time marking every sentence that stood out as wonderful, so I could flip back through later and admire his best work.

His plotting was also clever. Several times in the gay hotel scene near the end I had to throw down the book and clutch my stomach, I was laughing so hard. At one point my wife came running from the kitchen to see if I was all right, because I could barely catch my breath.

Shames paints pictures with words in ways that I've never seen another author do.
