    Not My Kind of book
This book is not the greatest but not the worst either, it's just okay. I brought this book for my German Literature class final project. As I was reading don't get me wrong Wolf is a wonderful but, the book is a little too slow for myself. It's very long and drawn out, which is why I had to quit reading at one point. I could not just get through it.

Inspired by the occupations of Palestine, Kurdistan and Tibet, and by the corporate occupation of the west, Occupied is a haunting glance into a society which is a little too familiar for comfort. It truly is a unique piece of literary fiction

Helen Lloyd helps a beautiful story come alive
Emma Claire Sweeney's debut novel is a family saga, well written, with characters you will want to root for. It's everything a great novel should be. I found myself thinking about the characters long after I'd turned the last page. I alternated reading this book on Kindle and listening to it on Audible. The Helen Lloyd narration is so well done. I recommend this book to everyone.

    Publisher's Summary:
In 1964 the eccentric American novelist Patricia Highsmith is hiding out in a cottage in Suffolk, to concentrate on her writing and escape her fans. She has another motive, too - a secret romance with a married lover based in London.
Unfortunately it soon becomes clear that all her demons have come with her. Prowlers, sexual obsessives, frauds, imposters, suicides and murderers: the tropes of her fictions clamour for her attention, rudely intruding on her peaceful Suffolk retreat.
After the arrival of Ginny, an enigmatic young journalist bent on interviewing her, events take a catastrophic turn. Except, as always in Highsmith's troubled life, matters are not quite as they first appear....
    Members Reviews:
Superb narration and excellent, unguessable plot
An intriguing insight into a mind wired a little differently from the norm. Has made me want to read more of Jill Dawson AND Patricia Highsmith.
Intriguing as one of Highsmith's own novels.
I am not usually a fan of fictionalised versions of real people...I had a tendency to break off to check if x or y event actually happened. This don't happen with this book because I found myself so engrossed in the world of Dawson's 'Pat' that the reality became irrelevant. I think that Highsmith might have enjoyed the book...while it's no 'Talented Mr. Ripley' (what is?)- the story is effortlessly suspenseful and has some intriguing things to say about the imagination and the way it impacts on our experience of the world. It is in no way as pretentious as that makes it sound!
    An intriguing read.
This book was read brilliantly and I loved the concept of the story. I did not know that the main character Patricia and her friend Ronnie were actually real people, indeed well known writers! I feel more educated now. I have been able to enjoy the book twice as a result. The knowing gives the book greater weight. The snails were a delightful touch.

    Members Reviews:
Shouldn't be labled as romance; but still a powerful story
    From the back cover:
What do you do when your husband hits you?...When your father only thinks of you as Daddy's good girl?...When your little son looks at you with tears in his eyes and asks you why you're taking him away from home in the middle of the night? If you're Susan Kidd, you forge a new identity for yourself and leave the past behind.
Like countless women who have made the wrong choices, loved the wrong men, let other people direct their lives, Susan decided to take control of her future. Bright, determined and hardworking, she had the courage to believe she could succeed. This is her story--it is your story--for in one way or another, we are all...Becoming.
    And my review:
I was a little wary of buying this book, since I hadn't liked ADMIT DESIRE by the same author. But since it was only 50 cents, I decided to take the chance. I'm glad that I did.
This is the story of a battered wife learning to start over. And while the book is labeled "contemporary romance", the romance aspect of it is only a very small portion of the book. In fact, the reader doesn't even get to meet the hero until page 250! For a 400 page book, that's not very much time for a romance.
And that's where the book lost one star. The romance felt very tacked on at the end. The character of the hero was only very briefly sketched. I never really felt like I knew him. Rather than showing us their relationship, the author decided to just tell us that they are in love, a mere five pages after they meet. Sorry, but I don't find it realistic just because you say it's so! I like to really see and feel the love between the two characters. I didn't here. I suspect that the author was working under a page restriction, and couldn't develop the romance the way she might have liked to. Once I got past my "as if they could be in love so quickly without even knowing each other at all" attitude, the struggles of the heroine to learn to trust again were well portrayed.
The rest of this book was very well done. The character of the heroine was well drawn. Her motivations and fears and the way her past had shaped her was shown through flashbacks and introspection by the heroine. I also liked that the author delved into the relationship of the heroine's parents, showing how their attitudes had shaped the heroine, and bringing healing to their relationship (with each other and with their daughter) as well.
The author also did a good job of showing what had shaped the abusive husband. Not that she ever excused his actions, but she showed how violence can be passed down from parent to child without ever being preachy about it. The husband was more than just a caricature; he was a person as well. It made the heroine's struggle to be free of him while still caring for him feel more real to me.
One minor complaint I had was that I felt that the heroine's son was too good to be true. This kid never complained, never got scared, never threw a tantrum...for an eight-year-old dragged away from everything he's ever known...well, I just found it a little hard to believe.

A tragicomic tour de force about one man's redemption through love and art.
    "You have lost everything, yes?"
Everything? Henry thought; he considered the word. Had he lost everything?
Fleeing New Orleans as Hurricane Katrina approaches, Henry Garrett is haunted by the ruins of his marriage, a squandered inheritance, and the teaching job he inexplicably quit. He pulls into a small Virginia town after three days on the road, hoping to silence the ceaseless clamor in his head. But this quest for peace and quiet as the only guest at a roadside motel is destroyed when Henry finds himself at the center of a bizarre and violent tragedy. As a result Henry winds up stranded at the ramshackle motel just outside the small town of Marimore, and it's there that he is pulled into the lives of those around him: Latangi, the motel's recently widowed proprietor, who seems to have a plan for Henry; Marge, a local secretary who marshals the collective energy of her women's church group; and the family of an old man, a prisoner who dies in a desperate effort to provide for his infirm wife.
For his previous novels, John Gregory Brown has been lauded for his "compassionate vision of human destiny" as well as his "melodic, haunting, and rhythmic prose". With A Thousand Miles from Nowhere, he assumes his place in the tradition of such masterful storytellers as Flannery O'Connor and Walker Percy, offering to listeners a tragicomic tour de force about the power of art and compassion and one man's search for faith, love, and redemption.
    Critic Reviews:

  • The Mandibles Audiobook by Lionel Shriver

    Title: The Mandibles
    Subtitle: A Family, 2029-2047
    Author: Lionel Shriver
    Narrator: George Newbern
    Format: Unabridged
Length: 13 hrs and 45 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 06-21-16
    Publisher: HarperCollins Publishers Ltd
Ratings: 4.5 of 5 out of 9 votes
    Genres: Fiction, Literary
    Publisher's Summary:
From Lionel Shriver, the acclaimed author of the National Book Award finalist So Much for That and the international best seller We Need to Talk About Kevin, comes a striking new novel about family, money, and global economic crisis.
The year is 2029, and nothing is as it should be. The very essence of American life, the dollar, is under attack. In a coordinated move by the rest of the world's governments, the dollar loses all its value. The American president declares that the States will default on all its loans; prices skyrocket, currency becomes essentially worthless, and we watch one family struggle to survive through it all.
The Mandibles can count on their inheritance no longer, and each member must come to terms with this in their own way - from the elegant expat author Nollie, in her middle age, returning to the US from Paris after many years abroad; to her precocious teenage nephew, Willing, who is the only one to actually understand the crisis; to the brilliant Georgetown economics professor Lowell, who watches his whole vision of the world disintegrate before his eyes.
As ever, in her new novel Shriver draws larger than life characters who illuminate this complicated, ever-changing world. One of our sharpest observers of human nature, Shriver challenges us to think long and hard about the society we live in and what, ultimately, we hold most dear.
    Members Reviews:
    The Buck Stops
Lionel Shriver's new novel, "The Mandibles: A Family 2029-2047" is captivating, and at the same time a humorous and chilling work of speculative fiction. Early on, one of Shiver's characters, in referencing the works: "2001: A Space Odyssey" and "1984", says: "Plots set in the future are about what we fear in the present. They're not about the future at all." Since this particular character turns out to be extremely wrong about a lot of things, I take this as a wink to the reader that Shriver believes that many of her dire predictions about the economic future of the US may indeed become true. We'll see!
"The Mandibles" begins in 2029 (100 years since the "crash" of 1929). In what is later called "The Great Renunciation", the president (who is a "Lat": of Latin descent), calls for the renunciation all US debt and defaults on all foreign debt. Invoking the International Emergency Powers Act of 1977 (it's real), he calls for all gold to be confiscated. Blame is placed on nebulous "hostile foreign" entities who have tried to replace the dollar with the "bancor". The President, in addition to recalling all gold (including jewelry and dental work) from every citizen, has ordered the military to do a door-to-door search for hoarded gold and for those responsible to be fined and imprisoned. In addition, the US has "reset" all US Treasury bonds to zero and inflation has driven the price of a (scarce) head of cabbage up to $30. Some folks are happy that the "uber-rich" or the 1%-ers are falling like dominoes seeing it as finally a way to erase the vast economic disparities. The US starts printing (now almost worthless) money by the truckload, though with the toilet paper scarcity - well, you can imagine what happens.
The novel revolves around the eponymous Mandible family, founded by wealthy grandfather Douglas Mandible aka "Grand Man".

Title: She Poured Out Her Heart
    Author: Jean Thompson
    Narrator: Madeleine Lambert
    Format: Unabridged
Length: 14 hrs and 17 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 05-31-16
    Publisher: Blackstone Audio, Inc.
Ratings: 3.5 of 5 out of 15 votes
    Genres: Fiction, Literary
    Publisher's Summary:
National Book Award finalist Jean Thompson traces the complicated friendship of two very different women who meet in college. In the tradition of her best-selling novel The Year We Left Home, Thompson has crafted a novel of remarkable psychological suspense, cast with the kinds of deeply realized characters that have been heralded as "emotionally fluid" and "deeply familiar".
The night that Jane and Bonnie meet on a college campus sets them on paths forever entwined. Bonnie, the wild and experimental one, always up for anything, has spent the past two decades bouncing between ill-fated relationships while Jane's seemingly perfect life, perfect husband, and perfect children appear to have materialized out of a fantasy. But these appearances contradict the quiet, inescapable doubt Jane feels about her life. One night, in the middle of her own Christmas party, she steps outside into the snow, removes her clothing and shoes, and lies down in the backyard. When she is discovered, nothing is the same for anyone. As Jane begins to have visions and retreat into a private inner world, Bonnie finds herself drawn inevitably into an affair with Jane's husband.
Thompson's mastery of complex emotion begets a novel of desire and the nature of love - who we love, how we're loved, and, most important, that we reach urgently and always for a higher love regardless of our circumstances. She Poured Out Her Heart is a finely wrought, haunting story of female friendship, deception, and the distance in between.
