I love to listen to dramatised audio books while I drive. I will listen to this as my go to. Mainly cause Hasting is in it. Really wish Dame Agatha had written more with Hastings.

Fantastic Twists

I've enjoyed all of the John Moffatt dramatisations, and this one was particularly good. I didn't know the story or the identity of the killer, so this one really kept me on edge.

Too Talky Not Enough Poirot

This radio version is not a good version. Too talky by the protagonist and not enough Hercule Poirot. I adore Poirot and have the full TV and full Audio sets all of which are brilliant fun. The tv version of this is excellent but this audio version is not up to standard.

Fabulous dramatization

I adore Agatha Christie and this book is no exception. The audio dramatization is great and the whole team of narrators did this work justice. I was enthralled and loved every second.

What did you love best about Evil Under the Sun?

The performances were wonderful and the adaptation of the book very skillfully done.

I really enjoy the BBC radio broadcast of the Poirot based novels. Evil Under the Sun is performed to perfection with John Moffat's expert narration as Poirot. Love the music and sound effects in the background.

Ending Too Absurd and Tired

Having read Agatha Christie books as a juvenile, I didnt realize how tired and farfetched her plotlines were. John Moffat is excellent as always portraying Poirot, bit he cannot do anything about this absurd ending. Shame.

Great story and solid cast

One of my favourite Christie whodunits brought to life by a good cast. Moffat is the radio Poirot for me. Being picky I find George Baker an actor better to watch than listen too but he is still competent. My kids (aged 10 and 8) love all the BBC radio adaptions too especially on camping trips or long car journeys.

Look for better options elsewhere

Annoying reading style, choppy. At points I wondered if performer was severely asthmatic. Too many comma insertions in the text. Too many modern anachronisms. Plot point based on something that didn't happen for 25years after the story timeline. Then, unforgivable to me, rehash of Conan Doyle plot points and phrases. Not homages, outright copy. Glad it was extra cheap on sale.

Much better done than you'd think for the price

The narrator does a much better job than the sampling shows, and the writer does an entertaining and competent job on the story. It would be a bargain at twice the asking price.

I'm not sure the author did any research

Would you try another book from Barry Day and/or David Ian Davies?

No. The book was poorly researched and badly written. The performance, while better than the writing, was still bad. IF you're going to set a book in a specific time period, research the historical events/people/places that you're referencing. For one, there was no attempt to rebuild the Globe in 1899. The modern Globe was built in 1997. A Victorian era theatre, built in 1903, was called the Globe for 80+ years but had not been built at the time this book is set and in no way resembled the original Globe theatre in design. If you're going to create a meeting with Freud (which was completely unnecessary and distracting), don't say he is in Boston for the tour of the English publication of "Dreams" in Sept 1899 when it wasn't published at all until November 1899 and not in English until 1913.

Finally, if you're going to write a Sherlock genre mystery, don't make the identity of the murder extremely obvious in Ch. 5 but not have Sherlock even begin to suspect until Ch. 10.

Not Unadbridged

While this was only an average sequel, the major issue I've got with this book is the fact that I brought this thinking it was unabridged as advertised but turns out it is abridged.

An Under Appreciated Sequel to "the Big Sleep"

The writing AND narration equally.

What did you like best about this story?

The author, Robert B. Parker, brings Chandler's Philip Marlowe back to life in this sequel to the classic author's first novel.

What does Elliott Gould bring to the story that you wouldnt experience if you just read the book?

Having played Philip Marlowe in the film "The Long Goodbye" - Gould is comfortable being the narrative voice of this character. In addition to that Mr. Gould is comfortable with silence and pauses and thus presents the story, and voices with good rhythm. Finally, his characterization voices of other men and women are not over the top while still keeping it listenable for the hearer of the audiobook.

As of 5/22/2013, upon my reporting of this error...the audiobook is falsely advertised as "Unabridged." Clocking in under three hours made me suspicious as did the fast clip of the story. I pulled off my old paperback version and began following along and discovered chunks of the story details and dialogue removed...thus the book is "Abridged." I do not like abridged books, but since there was not another option for this (I don't believe anyone ever recorded an unabridged version) I was happy to listen to it. But for those who want that, beware, this book falsely advertises itself as "Un." This is the reason I took it down one star for my "overall" review.

Don't Spend Once

Okay, I am capable of suspending my disbelief and enjoy a mindless thriller. But this one is just so cliched it actually pains me to read any further. If you like a read wherein the hero leaves a wake of dead witnesses behind and he knows it but he just can't stop "because that's the kind of guy I am, I just keep coming - arghh" without regard to reason, then by all means buy this book.

If you get frustrated when the hero is stubborn and incapable of actually catching this completely stacked deck of bad guys because, yeah, well, they are that much smarter than everyone because that's the way they are written and maybe, just maybe, the readers would be better off if the bad guys caught up with our hero, killed him and put us all out of our misery by ending this story sooner rather than later, (taking a breath...) then don't waste your time or money on this book.

Spoiler alert: I'm 2 hours from the end and can't take it anymore. The author just killed off a fellow officer on the police force, some poor throw away character who was sitting at home minding his own business watching "24" with his son. He is sent to meet our hero at our hero's home. Throw away guy arrives there ahead of our hero, lets himself in and is standing inside at the front window when our hero pulls into the driveway. Hero phones throw away guy to let him know he's just arrived and is coming in. I guess this guy is even dumber than our hero and needs the heads up. If you can't guess what happens next you haven't been paying attention. I have, but apparently our hero hasn't, which is why he sent this poor schnook there in the first place. Yeah - a bomb goes off and blows the throw away character up because it was supposed to be our lucky but dumb hero. Shocker.

I'm done. Oh, I will fast forward to the end to see who is left standing but not because I care about our hero. I hope he dies. For my money back (and thankfully I got this on sale so it didn't cost too much), I'd pull the plug on him myself. I just want to see how the author manages to wrap up this fiasco.

Filthy

Couldn't get past the first chapter. Too trashy for me. The sample didn't have anything that indicated that this would be so graphic. Wasted my money on this one.

Fluffy summer reading.

This kind of thing no doubt sells a lot of paperbacks in airports.
