The author has researched and picked material from legal cases mostly from the 19th century. The lack of scientific explanation is obvious. Also, the cases are picked to illuminate points rather than follow development of a scientific concept.

A classic that still works

Some of the classic mystery/thrillers really dont make it or seem very dated today but this one holds up with time.

The writing is old school hard boiled but does not come of corny. The wordsmithing is vintage greatness.

Very well performed and a plot that holds up with time there isnt a false note here.

I read of all Ross MacDonald in print years ago and look forward to listening to them all again.

Everything one could hope for in a Gumshoe Noir.

Ross MacDonald remains in the ranks of Chandler and Hammett when it comes to the classic Gumshoe detective novel. McDonald's story line, while elaborate, is easily understood. His descriptions are almost poetic in their imagery. I highly recommend this novel.

Classic Noir

Where does The Ivory Grin rank among all the audiobooks youve listened to so far?

Ross McDonald is one of my favorite author's and Grover Gardner did his creation Lew Archer justice. The plot is strong, and the narrator captures Archer's world-weariness. Highly recommended.

Terrific, Layered Mystery

The BBC Agatha Christie dramatizations are at the top of my list.

Any of the other dramatizations starring John Moffatt as Hercules Poirot such as The Three Act Tragedy.

John Moffatt performs Poirot. Various actors do the other parts.

No but I found the mystery to be a bit sad and melancholy. These emotions added to the texture and atmosphere of the story.

This is a well done psychological mystery with intriguing characters and a good plot.

Although Elinor is a less than traditional heroine, she works well in this story. I like her interactions with her aunt, her boyfriend and her rival. Well worth listening to.

A full cast performance, very entertaining. I bought this audiobook because audible doesn't have one read by Hugh Fraser who in my opinion is the best Christie reader. This is a good second choise, although I much prefer the whole book

Don't miss this one!

This is one of my favorite Agatha Christie books and this radio dramatization is excellent. Not disappointed in it at all and I'm so happy to have found these in Audible. I enjoy listening and being "read to".

Gripping Murder Mystery

Another gripping murder mystery solved by Poirot. Good dramatisation. Thoroughly enjoyable. I would recommend this drama to anyone at anytime.

Excellent adaptation

Chilling adaptation of Dame Agatha Christie's thriller. At times very faithful to the book, with some liberties taken. Subtle and disturbing gothic tale of a young, newlywed couple warned not to move to a land with a gypsy curse upon it, and, when they do, sinister things start happening. Tragic love story, well acted. The actors actually sounded exactly how I pictured from reading the book! The leading man was fantastic. Creepy, sinister sound effects enhanced the performance. Ellie's song was somber and sweet at the same time. But take note: this particular story is more psychological thriller, not a typical murder mystery. Slow moving and methodical, but the kind of dark story that gets under your skin. Would recommend reading the book first, it will increase your enjoyment and understanding of the radio play.

Not the best story, but nicely dramatised

I'd forgotten just how bad the story was when I bought this dramatisation. The cast do an admirable job of bringing what is essentially one of the weakest Agatha Christie story lines to life. However, even they can't distract the listener from a paper thin plot wrapped up in pseudo-psychobabble and silly supernatural.

This dramatisation has done the best it can with a pretty awful story, but even so I can't honestly recommend this to anyone.

They Cut Too Much Out

First of all, let me say that Moffatt and McKenzie both did sublime jobs with their characterizations -- I felt like they really understood Agatha Christie's vision of how Poirot and Ariadne Oliver would have sounded. The other characters, likewise, were well-cast. And the story itself is, in my opinion, definitely one of Agatha Christie's many best. The problem is that when abridging this down into a radio play, there was just too much cut. The fun of an Agatha Christie novel is the characters and sorting through all the red herrings -- but this story had so many characters cut down, that you didn't really have red herrings to play with. All those extra story lines that mix in with the murder in a Christie novel just weren't there. I was disappointed, especially since I felt like this particular cast could really have done a good job with a lengthier adaptation of the book.

I would recommend this audio program for car trips -- since it will entertain without distracting. However, as something to enjoy in the evening or at night, I would go with either a full audio book or a different radio play.

Entertaining Full-Cast Dramatization

Yes. I fully enjoyed the full cast and the music and sound effects. All the actors did a great job at telling this mystery story.

Who was your favorite character and why?

Dead Man's Folly features both Hercule Poirot and Ariadne Oliver which was delightful to have them working together to solve the mystery.

Any additional comments?

Overall, a fine cast, well produced and an enjoyable listen.

Yes. The fantastic vocals add so much to the story.

Who was your favorite character and why?

I always like Poirot and Ariadne Oliver. In this book I particularly liked the victim, Marlene Tucker. She was whiny and pathetic but entertaining. I also liked old Mrs. Folliat who is the key to so much of the story.

Which character as performed by John Moffatt and Julia McKenzie was your favorite?

Ariadne Oliver by Julia McKenzie. She is a version of Agatha herrself and one of my favorite characters. Julia brings forth her scanty nature and makes her very appealing.

If you were to make a film of this book, what would the tag line be?

It's always foolish to commit murder.
