Language: English

Genres: Mysteries & Thrillers, Classic Detective

Publisher's Summary:

A puzzling publishing murder attracts the eye of Ellery Queen.

Mandarin Press is a premier publishing house for foreign literature, but to those at the top of this enterprise, there is little more beautiful than a rare stamp. As Donald Kirk, publisher and philatelist, prepares his office for a banquet, an unfamiliar man comes to call. No one recognizes him, but Kirks staff is used to strange characters visiting their boss, so Kirks secretary asks him to wait in the anteroom. Within an hour, the mysterious visitor is dead on the floor, head bashed in with a fireplace poker, and everything in the anteroom has been quite literally turned upside down. The rug is backwards; the furniture is backwards; even the dead mans clothes have been put on front-to-back.

As debonair detective Ellery Queen pries into the secrets of Mandarin Press, every clue he finds is topsy-turvy. The great sleuth must tread lightly, for walking backwards is a surefire way to step off a cliff.

Members Reviews:

Classic detective series, awful narrator

As most people who read detective stories and mysteries know, the Ellery Queen novels are splendid examples of their time and of the locked room/impossible crime genre. This book is no exception. But be forewarned: the narrator leaves everything to be desired. he is stiff, awkward, artificial. His attempts at characterization through accents are laughable. He makes listening a continuous challenge. To me, he reads the book as if he were reading it to a group of beginning English-language learners, who were following along with the printed text.

Read veeeery slooooowly

Any additional comments?

I had to watch this on a minimum of 1.25x to prevent my mind from wandering off mid-sentence as the poor reader inched his way through syllables like a drugged sloth. I put up with the resultant squeakiness, but it was decidedly sub-optimal. Bit of a shame, as this is an entertaining mystery.

The Thinking Machine is back!

The stories are a little dated, but they're as entertaining as they were 45 years ago when I first read them. I downloaded six Thinking Machine books to my kindle, and I'm glad I did.

Best Holmes performers

Where does The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes rank among all the audiobooks youve listened to so far?

Highly, although it is a radio broadcast and not an audiobook.

Who was your favorite character and why?

Richardson and Gielgud are the BEST cast for Sherlock Holmes stories.

Which character as performed by Sir John Gielgud and Orson Welles was your favorite?

They are both excellent

Wonderful renditions!

The voice acting in these incredible stories brings me right there to 221B. I can't recommend these enough.

Sherlock Holmes

Loved it . Have listened to it several times. Great production, very well done. As for the actors, well, what would you expect from 2 of the finast actors ever!!!

Excellent Classic Gielgud is Sherlock

John Gielgud projects the era perfectly & draws you into the world

of gas lights, horse drawn carriages & gentlemanly manners as he sleuths his way to the murderer.

Too many good things happen in this set to pin to one scene. They are all excellent lovely full cast dramas to enjoy over & over. I am impressed with the clear sound, absolutely no crackles etc.

I have "All" the different Sherlocks in my collection gives a nice variation to the stories as each actor brings a different style to the performance. I wish there were more Sherlocks to buy, keeps me entertained for hours & for days during these cold winters. Perfect for curling up & relax.

Prefer the BBC drama versions. Still top notch!

Any additional comments?

The only nitpicking I will do is to say that the violin that was played after each mystery annoyed me slightly, listening to it after every single mystery was a bit much, especially as there is no variation. It is monotonous and them same every time, but don't let it put you off.

The sound quality was slightly dubious, but well narrated with some good audio drama noises. A very good effort for it's time.

The king of Sherlock Holmes and what makes it so ravenously satisfying for me is listening to it from the BBC drama versions available on audible. However, this still had all the makings of a fantastic listening experience and I enjoyed it very much.

Members Reviews:

Great John D.!

If you could sum up On the Make in three words, what would they be?

Elegant pulp fiction.

What other book might you compare On the Make to and why?

Can't compare. John D. was one of a kind. This book was written before the Travis McGee, but has all the elements of that series and more.

What about Robert Armins performance did you like?

Good.

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

John D.s writing style is unsurpassed. Great plotting and characters.

Any additional comments?

Highly recommended for those who like this genre.

MacDonald is more than McGree

Where does On the Make rank among all the audiobooks youve listened to so far?

This is the first MacDonald novel I have read/listened other than the Travis McGree series. I was reluctant to try this, as often early novels of writers do not live up to later works. In this case, I was entranced during the entire book. I will definitely be buying more MacDonald books.

Publisher's Summary:

"Intricate plotting and sympathetically quirky, satisfyingly competent characters make this series one to watch" (Publisher's Weekly)

"Don't miss this one...she's fabulous" (Christine Feehan)

Members Reviews:

Fantastical mech monsters..

An extremely descriptive story, I actually enjoyed the world and the stuffy imperious Emma, but found the surrounding characters even more interesting and I hate to say this as I love this authors works I sometimes got lost (even though eloquently done)in the very detailed telling, lots of rewinding back.

There is so much going on that the development of the relationships between characters got lost in the telling with the exception of Emma and her Shield and these moments where very few and far between.

The antagonists plan was deliciously nefarious and clever, L.S's imagination regarding the mechs and the caste type system regarding what powers you have that is the job you do is what kept me reading. It's very difficult to come up with something that is new but it's done here.

The best bits are the fantastical monsters, plots and the pure imagination of the world.

Less description, more plot...

I was confused by the narration of this book, as the two main characters (and their internal thoughts) all sounded the same. It was very hard to follow. Added to this was the poor plot. Basically, they go somewhere they shouldn't, they get into a magical fight where various descriptive phrases are repeated again and again, and then they go somewhere else they shouldn't, and have another fight.

The reader is pretty bad

I've read the print book so thought I'd enjoy the audio book. But the reader is dreadful. I spent so much time correcting the things she said that it threw me out of the story. It seems she's never heard some of the words she's reading spoken aloud, which is frankly terrifying.

L'histoire nous emmène dans une maison abandonnée des faubourgs de Londres où un crime très complexe vient d'être perpétré, et nous entraine bien loin de l'Angleterre, près de Grand Lac Salé, au pays des Mormons.

L'auteur
