Hugh Fraser does it again

Would you listen to The Mystery of the Blue Train again? Why?

The Mystery of the Blue Train is one of my favourite Christie novels, and I think Hugh Fraser did a wonderful job mimicking David Suchet's Poirot voice, as well as making the women sound normal instead of overly feminine.

What other book might you compare The Mystery of the Blue Train to and why?

And Then There Were None, narrated by the same actor, but with no Poirot, so no fallback character. A wonderfully creepy rendition of Justice Wargrave.

What about Hugh Frasers performance did you like?

Wonderfully varied in voice, with each character distinct by sound alone, and his natural voice is perfect for narrating.

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

When Katherine tells Poirot she can't go on, Hugh Fraser captures the distress in her voice in a perfect, yet understated, manner.

Good story

Good story. Classic Christie tale. As always Hugh Frasers narration is perfect. I could listen to him reading anything. Brilliant!

Another wonderful book from Agatha Christie. Narrated by the wonderful Hugh Fraser who reads all the parts with excellent accents and makes you feel your really in the strory.

The Blue Train twists and turns

I love to hear Hugh Fraser's telling any of the Poirot stories. He has Poirot's voice just right and he is excellent at the range, accents and tone of all the other characters especially women where he manages never to sound shrill but remains sympathetic and believable as a woman's voice.

The story of Blue Train twists and turns, it is quite dark at times and the denouement is unexpected, Agatha Christie at her best.

An Inspector Ghote novel

I was happily introduced to Inspector Ghote in the pages of Alfred Hitchcock and Ellery Queen Mystery Magazines, so decided to try this title. Glad I did - the characterization was hilarious and the challenges and frustrations faced by Inspector Ghote evoked my sympathy. Although the story line lagged in places, and the solving of the mystery involved listening to a few fruitless conversations in the story, it was definitely an enjoyable journey to get to the solution. And the narration was excellent! I would recommend this listen if you are in the mood for trying something a little out of the usual.

Very Silly Story

I was looking for a new detective series to listen to and thought I would give this one a try. The story was just silly and the characters are flimsy and quite stereotypical. Worse yet is the narrator. Very annoying, especially the Swedish UNESCO character. I felt I was being yelled at through most of the story. This was the first in the series, there are quite a few, so maybe they get better. I recommend skipping this one.

Tedious

This is a wordy and overwritten book of very little mystery, with a narrator who makes a singsong attempt at Indian accents that makes them all sound the same. Its redeeming qualities are a somewhat endearing detective and some local color prose. But they're not enough to rescue the book.

Among the best of the series

One of the rich crop of British (well Australian by birth in this case)"lady" mystery writers, Marsh sometimes can be a bit tardy in getting her stories going. Not in this one. It hands us a villain quickly and moves right along with a nice balance of quirky characters and a bit of romance without our having to sit through yet another of those sex scenes thrown in to add spice and readers. (At my age, my only reaction is "cut out that mush and get back to the story".)

The setting is Rome and Alleyn is working undercover cooperating with the Italian police.We do not get a travel tour but as in the later, very popular books by Elizabeth Peters (another of my favorites)the key action takes place underground in several archaeologic layers of resurrected churches.The writing is highly professional and interesting, the reading by Nadia May is up to her customary high standards. The book was originally published in 1971 and thus omits some of the customary "feminine touches" which mark the books by the current crop of (often very fine) mystery writers. Alleyn's artist wife, Troy, appears only off-stage in the letters written to her by her detective husband.

I can recommend this to people who want some good listening without high drama, intense suspense, or realistic coverage of death. Fans of Marsh will be happy to hear a good reading of a book they may have read years ago.

Exhausting

Not wanting to waste a credit, I continued listening to this book to the bitter end. I had never read anything by this author and was looking for a mystery. I found it uninteresting and almost annoying. That's it for this author.

The golden days of radio

This collection of the golden days of radio, perfectly re-capture the feel of the 1940's. While some point to the petri-wine commercials as annoying, I have always thought of them as an inseparable part of the radio program. Not like today where literally hours of our lives are wasted on pointless commercials. This re-lives a time when commercials were something different. The ever-lovable Nigel Bruce as always lends a lighter foil to the darkness of the stories content. It would be nearly impossible to separate Nigel Bruce and Basil Rathbone from the Conan Doyle cannon of Holmes. For those who do not appreciate this portrayal, I would say it is Anthony Bouncher and Denis Green whom you disprove of, as they are the ones writing these stories. I have personally read every original Holmes case, and most of the expanded cannon of Sherlock Holmes, and listened to many of the recovered radio broadcasts, as well as having seen most of the old movies. I think that anyone who loves Sherlock Holmes will love and appreciate this collection of Sherlock Holmes cases that you will not find elsewhere. Overall, if you are a fan of the golden age of radio, and/or if you are a fan of Sherlock Holmes, you will probably enjoy this greatly. If you are a fan of both, you will be, like myself, thrilled this was recovered from obscurity. As a side note, can anyone tell me if original Petri wine is still available anywhere?

A Step Into Nostalgia

A very interesting set of Sherlock Holmes events, humourous commentary provided by Dr Watson. To enjoy to the fullest, picture yourself in front of a radio in the 1940s. The wine commercials get a bit annoying, but hey, that's what fast-forward is for. Overall enjoyable.

Not great

This wouldn't be so bad if they would edit out the wine commercials. Do they really need to include those? Surely with modern technology we could listen to these great stories without the narrator endlessly pimping his wine. For those who haven't listened to this, the stories take up about half of the total length of this audio selection and the wine takes up the other half. I'm not kidding. Also, I'm not a big fan of Nigel Bruce. I don't really care for his interpretation of Watson. Obviously somebody liked him because he played Watson for so long, but he makes Watson sound like a complete idiot, and this sentiment has been echoed several times before. Overall, I would probably pass on this selection, mostly for the way it was put together.

Very Engaging!

This was definitely among my top listens and I have listened to it more than once.

Did the plot keep you on the edge of your seat? How?

Anyone who loves good British mystery , excellent character development, and a cracking good story, should enjoy this book very much. Well worth the download.

What about John Lees performance did you like?

I always enjoy John Lee. He does not over dramatize his readings but manages to differentiate between the characters and is quite pleasant to listen to.

No

It was OKay.

I suppose I expected a lot more from the book. There were sections that held my attention.

I guess I'm just not very fond of the fantasy superman detective. This detective that can throw a punch and not get his shirt wrinkled, inexplicably foresee what will always happen next, etc. I like a more human detective, one that is a bit more human and fallible. I can follow the fallible detective's thought patterns more. Sir John, our detective, was just too perfect.

The mystery was a bit so-so and obvious.. but, the author attempted to throw in a twist at the end, but it just didn't "follow". The entire story was rather trite and choppy, for my liking. There didn't seem to be much originality. The historic portrayal of Animal Magnitism though, was portrayed accurately for the period. So, I'd give the author kudos for research.

The narrator had moments of brilliance, but alas, Sir John was played very condescendingly and arrogantly. This may be how the character was written, but I just didn't like it. Other characters' voices were played well though. His meter was just a bit too fast for my liking as well.

Good mystery, bad editing

The chapters end suddenly and then the next one starts up right away. It's annoying. It is also the weakest of the Nadia May narrations I've listened to so far.

Dramatizations are a great change of pace

I loved this mystery. I was on a trip and I set up in my motel room with some portable speakers. It was very well done and just the right mix of period piece and contemporary mystery. There is a "Mr. and Mrs. North" feeling to the characters and a lot of twists and turns along the way.

Classic Radio Drama

Drama and comedy shows were still being broadcast on the radio when I was a child. I remember sitting in front of a large console radio to listen to "The Green Hornet". Television became the prime broadcast medium, but I still enjoy listening to dramatized radio shows.

The Paul Temple series was broadcast on the BBC for over 30 years, ending in 1969. Writer Paul Temple and his wife, Steve (a woman), assist Scotland Yard in solving crimes. Red herrings and plot twists are part of the formula and part of the fun. The "final act", in which the criminal is revealed, usually takes place at some form of cocktail party.

The acting and production of these shows is excellent.

If you are looking for pure entertainment and a bit of nostalgia, this series is a good bet.

simply the best

Peter Coke and Marjorie Westbury are the best pairing as Paul and Steve Temple. Typical Durbridge plot with plenty of deaths and plot twists. Enjoy!

Fabulous Enterainment

I love Stevie & Paul Temple. Such fun toffs who go around hunting

out the latest criminals the only way the Temples can & this is with

good old fashioned Swarv & panash. Cocktails & footmen galore, these

two will not only have you glued to your seats for several hours, but

will give you hours of good clean laughs & have you wondering which

of the many characters is not telling the truth.

All the characters are well played & Paul will have you smirking at times with the way he cheekily handles his wife. Great fun & I hope they make more.

Professionally produced full cast & beautifully directed, these two

sleuths are so entertaining I bought the full collection.

Paul Temple and the Jonathan affair

These are very nostalgic stories reminding me of sitting round the "wireless"

as a young lad and waiting for that music the Coronation Scott to come on meaning an exciting half hour was to follow.It is a bit like a pantomime ,you have to suspend disbelief. Then the stories are well written and entertaining, with suspense and thrills and lots of Champagne and fast cars Etc.
