I read this for the first time almost 50 years ago
This book in its original brings back both joyful and horrible memories of high school French classes. I can still read it in French and enjoy it.
    Perfect
    Love it.
    A lire absolument

"Nadia May is nothing short of extraordinary in this complicated mystery....Every character's eccentricity is explored and appropriately interpreted, adding spice, humor, and authenticity to a proper British mystery." (AudioFile) "It's time to start comparing Christie to Marsh instead of the other way around." (New York) "The finest writer in the English language of the pure, classical puzzle whodunit. Among the crime queens, Ngaio Marsh stands out as an Empress." (The Sun)

Love the Author, she never disappoints! Fabulous reader, just a nuance of change and walla a different person speaks. The story is moving toward the climax with never a bump, and...what was not clearly understood... is a marvelous play on words!! Loved it!

It was a horrible death - Maurice Questing was lured into a pool of boiling mud and left there to die. Chief Inspector Roderick Alleyn, far from home on a wartime quest for German agents, knows that any number of people could have killed him: the English exiles he'd hated, the New Zealanders he'd despised, or the Maoris he'd insulted. Even the spies he'd thwarted - if he wasn't a spy himself...

    Mud pot mystery!
I love Ngaio Marsh although Colour Scheme isn't perhaps, my favorite because Chief Inspector Alleyn doesn't appear until the very end (in a way). But Ms. Marsh makes you live New Zealand in wartime and her depictions of the Maoris are spot-on! Ngaio Marsh certainly deserves to have a larger listenership, and I encourage Audible listeners to buy this and her other books. You won't be disappointed. The narrator, Nadia May, is also very good, her 'voices' enhance the production.
My major reason for writing this review is to alert Audible that there's a problem with the audio program production. At least 10 times during the book's course, a paragraph is repeated. While this is actually helpful if I've become distracted by driving concerns, it's a little disconcerting to hear it all again. This book needs to be re-edited.
    Not quite there
This just wasn't something I could get into. I gave up after several hours. It might mean more to some one with more awareness to the New Zealand setting. The narrator was okay but, not captivating. I agree with the other reviewer about some paragraphs being repeated.
A fascinating look into northern New Zealand
It is 1943, deep in the midst of World War II, and Detective Chief Inspector Roderick Alleyn has been sent to New Zealand to look for spies when he gets a letter from Dr. James Ackrington that he is certain that a spy is inhabiting Wai-ata-Tapu Hot Springs, which are thermal springs with mud baths and mineral waters full of "alkalize, free sulfuric acid, and free carbolic acid gas" in Colour Scheme. Then the book shifts to the Hot Springs with the Claire family and Dr. Ackrington, along with their guests and local native friends. Dr Ackrington receives a letter from a doctor friend asking if the famous Shakespearean actor, Geoffery Gaunt, might be allowed to spend some time at the Hot Springs doing hydrotherapy. Gaunt got stuck in New Zealand when the war started, so he has spent his time raising money for the war effort. But now he needs medical treatment and has been recommended to visit Wai-ata-Tapu. Most of the Claire family are inclined to reject the visit of Gaunt, along with his secretary and manservant, but Colonel Claire reveals that he is in serious debt to Maurice Questing, the odious man who has been occupying a room at Wai-ata-Tapu, so they need the funds from Gaunt, though that will almost certainly be insufficient to save the springs for themselves. Thus they invite Gaunt to join them.
It doesn't take long before Gaunt takes up residence, leading to a visit by the Maori top royalty, Rua, a 100- year sort of uber- chief who began life as a warrior, then became a newspaper editor and then a member of Parliament before returning to the traditional Maori lifestyle in his old age.

    Publisher's Summary:
In this collection are four of the finest cases of Mr. Sherlock Holmes, narrated by his faithful friend and admirer Dr. Watson. What was the mystery of the engineer's thumb? What was behind the disappearance of the race horse? Why did masked royalty walk up to see Holmes in Baker Street? These and other puzzles are solved in this collection by this bloodhound of a genius.
    Editorial Reviews:
Four of the Holmes canon's more memorable tales including favorites "The Scandal in Bohemia" and "The Five Orange Pips," are read with skill and style. Classical music sets the tone and complements the extraordinary work of David Timson. Characterization is key to enjoying these adventures, and Timson brings dozens of characters to life, none more real than Holmes himself. The lively portraits have variety and distinction. They remain memorable, but dont take listeners out of the story. Timsons experience with recording the entire canon of Holmes adventures insures consistent excellence.

    Masked Horses with Wriggling Thumbs
These stories were three of the strangest I have heard so far, and I was supprised in the outcomes of them... and so will you. These are far different than most of Sherlock's other cases, as you will hear. This recording is in excellent quality under level 3.
    Everyone should read Sherlock Holmes
I do love these stories there classic. Arthur Conan Doyle?s was a genius
    Maybe not the best collection
Now I like a good mystery and normally quite enjoy a bit of Sherlock Holmes but this collection seemed a bit wishy washy compared to others. The stories themselves are ok but they did seem to rather merge into one, especially when I listened for a second time. Nothing stood out as much as it could.
The delivery was good and the audio quality was ok, if not a little muffled. I found I had to turn up the volume more than normal which is not great if listening in bed.
I'll give this one 3 out of 5 as the quality was lacking

But inside the pale, what troubles Brother Cadfael is a proud, secretive 19-year-old novice.Brother Cadfael has never seen two men more estranged than the Lord of Aspley and Meriet, the son he coldly delivers to the abbey to begin a religious vocation. Meriet, meek by day, is so racked by dreams at night that his howls earn him the nickname the Devil's Novice. Shunned and feared, Meriet is soon linked to the missing priest's dreadful fate. Only Brother Cadfael believes in Meriet's innocence, and only the good sleuth can uncover the truth before a boy's pure passion, not evil intent, leads a novice to the noose.

    Poor Narration Detracts from Story
Much of the enjoyment of listening to The Devil's Novice is compromised because of poor narration. Technically, it often sounds like the narrator has a blanket over her mouth. Artistically, she sounds like a little kid trying to sound like Daddy when she attempts to portray a male character. And why use a female voice to read a novel that is primarily a cast of Benedictine monks, anyway?
The story, though, is pure Cadfael and well worth listening to.
    Great book but disappointing narration
I bought this book despite other poor reviews of the narration because I enjoy the stories of Brother Cadfael and this was the only version available on Audible. I nearly returned it because the narration was so annoying. Why use a female for a book largely about male characters? In order to make the characters sound masculine the raises her voice, which leads to very uneven volume throughout the book between the narrative and the spoken sections. This was particularly annoying when listening in the car as it was hard to hear some parts. It was a pity she couldn't use a Welsh accent for Brother Cadfael. Please Audible, make versions of these books available in Australia with a male narrator. Those that are available by Stephen Thorne are excellent.
    An old recording
This recording of the story is very old fashioned. The reader is a woman, an odd selection for a story about a monastery i.e. all men, she puts on funny woman doing man voices for each character. I didn't get to the story, the reading was too distracting. Not worth the credit.
Why is a woman narrating this tale?
I love the Brother Cadfael series, and the story here is wonderful. The problem here is the narration. The sound quality is awfully muffled, and why did they have a woman narrate a tale about monks, for heaven's sake! 95% of the characters are men! The narrator is constantly trying to emulate the sound of men's voices (far too much) rather than just reading the story. I hope other Brother Cadfael tales are different.
    The Devil's Novice
The prospect of listening to another of this series was eagerly anticipated.

    terrible acting
absolutely horrible performances ruin this attempt at doing the holmes stories in audio play format. everyone sounds like a first day acting class student. how could any director let this happen?
    The Adventures of Sherlock holmes[dramatised]
Anyone who is familiar with the Sherlock Holmes novels may find these short dramas of interest. The American recording is a little dated and the sound production amusing at times. With the British accents often lapsing into American 'twang'. The background bird sounds at times appear to give the impression of people whistling in the background and the music inappropriate for the mood of the narrative.
Despite these shortcomings the Holmes powers of deduction are brought to the fore in maybe a somewhat simple form but would, therefore, be a good way for children to enjoy these classic tales.

A full-cast BBC Radio 4 dramatisation of an Agatha Christie story. On a flight from Le Bourget to Croydon, on which Hercule Poirot is an apprehensive passenger, a woman is found dead. A doctor on board is inclined to put it down to a wasp-sting, but Poirot suspects that a poisoned dart is the real cause - and, perhaps rather too conveniently, a blow pipe is discovered stuffed down the back of his seat.
Clearly, the murder can only have been committed by one of the passengers or crew on the plane. But which one? Poirot, Japp, and M. Fournier of the Surete will make their way through shoals of red herrings before reaching an utterly unexpected conclusion.

    Vintage Christie
Where does Death in the Clouds (Dramatised) rank among all the audiobooks youve listened to so far?
I'm a huge fan of all the BBC radio full-cast adaptations of Dame Agatha's books.
What other book might you compare Death in the Clouds (Dramatised) to and why?
Check out the BBC version of "Murder in Mesopotamia" for another winner.
Which character as performed by the narrator was your favorite?
John Moffatt's Poirot is wonderfully fun.
Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?
I loved how Poirot took an interest in the love life of the lovely Miss Grey.
    Outstanding Full-Cast Audio Production
What did you love best about Death in the Clouds (Dramatised)?
I like the full-cast of voices and the sound effects in the background. I really like John Moffat as Poirot. Everyone read their parts well. This was a totally enjoyable listen as are all of the Agatha Christie BBC full-cast radio dramatizations.
Excellent Christie Takes You Sky High
As I own the full collection of Agatha Christies Radio works, I can repeat myself no more but will say; this is typical of what to expect and fulfils and ticks all the right boxes. As with all of Christies plays, these are so good that you will listen to them over and over and still enjoy them as you did the first time and will listen again.
These plays are beautifully produced & directed. They are full casts brought to life by some of the top names in film and theatre. John Moffat plays a perfect radio Hercule. Of course, for TV David Suchet is the true Master of the kinky moustached sleuth. If you love Agatha Christie you will love and enjoy these.
    Those little grey cells.....
...do it again! Wonderfully dramatised. It really has it all, atmospheric and a great story acted out to perfection.
Heartily recommend for a very relaxing listen.

    Brilliantly told
Would you listen to Sad Cypress again? Why?
Yes and I already have. Well told narrative, with excellent character profiling. A great tale by Agatha Christie.
    A worthwhile listen
Would you say that listening to this book was time well-spent? Why or why not?
Worth listening for its story and characters.
Would you be willing to try another book from Agatha Christie? Why or why not?
I'm keen to read more Christie for the setting, mystery, and characters.
Have you listened to any of David Suchets other performances before? How does this one compare?
David Suchet is excellent - I'm choosing Christie novels based on his brilliant performances! This one did not disappoint.
    Hmmm
David Suchet is a surprisingly bad narrator. He is a wonderful Poirot, or course, but his voice for other characters is very poor, stilted, accents weak. Not a patch on Hugh Fraser's narration.
    Good story, poor performance.
What did you like best about Sad Cypress? What did you like least?
I enjoyed the story a lot more than I thought. However, the poor quality of narration really spoiled it for me, especially with it being David Suchet whom I admire as an actor.
What was one of the most memorable moments of Sad Cypress?
When the cunning of the murderer was revealed.
If this book were a film would you go see it?
No. I liked the story but not that much.
    Any additional comments?
I do wonder if the problem was with the narrator or a problem with the audio recording itself.
    Enjoyable listening
Good story with a satisfying conclusion. Beautifully read by David Suchet. I fully recommend this to add to your audible collection
