Kroese gets a bit off track

Would you try another book from Robert Kroese and/or Kevin Stillwell?

Yes, especially with Stillwell as the narrator.

What was the most interesting aspect of this story? The least interesting?

Hmmm, I can't think of a most interesting aspect, as there are many things going on at once. I was least interested, however, in the long ruminations over religion, good and evil, and belief/non-belief in God's existence. It got really tedious.

What does Kevin Stillwell bring to the story that you wouldnt experience if you just read the book?

Stillwell makes the book for me. His narration is superb. He lands all the subtle jokes and perfectly voices the different characters. The following book in the series is not read by him, and I couldn't finish it.

Do you think Mercury Rests needs a follow-up book? Why or why not?

Well, I read the follow-up, so I obviously like the series. But each novel gets more and more absurd and hard-to-follow. It seems as if the writer needs a better editor or maybe just needs to stop the series. I found this my least favorite of the series because it just goes on and on with no restraint. At times, it is like reading someone's rambling thoughts on life and the existence of God.

I recommend the first two in the series, but this one is for the hardcore, committed Mercury fan only.

Two great narrators for the price of one

As this book switches perspectives between two characters, the decision to split the performance between Mr. Clark and Mrs. Masters was great. With Bernard's well established Vlad laying the foundation, Mrs. Masters 'Keira the Thief' takes off.

A new narrator?

Another great book in the series ... though the storyline involves banking and finances. I'd prefer that Vlad would "get out of the forest" and get back to his street mystery solving.

I was nervous as a new narrator starts out this book. She does a great job, but I'd prefer to stay with Clark the entire book.

From Property Market to Bank Fraud

Vlad continues his life on the run from the Jhereg, this time with a catatonic companion in tow.

In Orca, Vlad is searching for a way to heal his companion Savn, who the audience met in the previous installment. He happens upon an old healer who is the midst of losing her property. Vlad brokers a deal to help her keep her land, while she cares for Savn and finds a method to heal him. But there is more going on than just a property deal, as Vlad quickly finds out.

While still a good story, it feels like the overall plot has come to a bit of a stutter here, the reader could almost consider this filler. Almost. The most important part of Orca is that we get somewhat of a resolution for Savn's involvement in the story, which carries over from the last book. Full of twists and turns and even a few big surprises, the book doesn't disappoint, but you could easily skip over this without missing a beat in the overall story.

For Orca we get the pleasure of listening to two narrators. Masters gives us a great Keira the Thief, while Clark reprises the always smarmy Vlad. Masters gives a bit of a celtic accent to Keira, which Clark has done a bit of in previous novels; it's good to see a bit of vocal continuity, especially since most of the story is told by Keira the Thief.

Good story, but bigger and better things are to come later in the series.

Good but weird

I liked in the end the two different narrators because of the nature of the story but it took a while for me to not hate it as Bernard is who I am use too.

Wonderful narration!!!

I found both narrators to be captivating and I tune with the characters they were portraying. I also enjoyed the creative Adventure and style of writing than Mr. Brust brings to the table. He is by far my favorite authors of all time.

Meet snarky Death and his deadly secrets.

Darksiders: The Abomination Vault is a gem of a story for all Darksiders fans to read and enjoy. You get a in-depth view of the horseman Death, who is a very snarky, lethal sonavabitch. A dark character with an ever darker past.

While the story happens long long LONG before the Darksiders game timeline, it lays down some precedences that may explain some of the who/what/why's for the game. The book has an interesting lot of characters from the high heavens to the depths of hell...many of which we are already familiar with such as Azrael, Abaddon, Uriel, and the Crowfather. And we meet new characters such as Panoptos (of which the watchers are based from) and The Keeper of Oblivion, whom I hope we meet again in the future.

Ari Marmell did a marvelous job fleshing out the characters in the book, especially with Death. I only hope he will write more Darksiders books in the future. His stories are rich enough for me to continue to enjoy the Darksiders universe, regardless if we get another game or not.

Bob Walter did an excellent job narrating and performing the story. His rendition of Death is just right with its feralness and inflections, similar to the game. Since Death is the lead character of the story, one can forgive the softer voice of War. Once you're lost in the story, it won't matter at all.

Oh, Death, Death, Death. You snarky feral sonofabitch. You freaking steal this story long and wide. Death is what makes the reading/listening The Abomination Vault so outstanding, regardless if you played the game or not.

War takes second place, but is still a major character. He gets some marvelous moments of his own in the book that War fans will enjoy. Strife and Fury also make appearance, but their parts are small.

But Death...dammit...he steals all the scenes. Greedy bastard, LOL.

If you're a fan of Darksiders, you will enjoy this audio book. Get it.

If you're a fan of dark fantasy, but have never played the game, you will also enjoy The Abomination Vault. Ari does a great job with his writing that you do not need to have played the game to still enjoy a great story. You will not be disappointed.

More melodrama

Lord of Emperors is the second (and final) novel in Guy Gavriel Kays THE SARANTINE MOSAIC duology. The story, set in a pseudo-Byzantine Empire, mostly centers on Crispin, a mosaicist from a neighboring kingdom whos been commissioned to decorate the ceiling of a new chapel the emperor is building. Against his wishes, Crispin has been drawn into the Sarantine courts political intrigue. In this second installment, the political turmoil finally comes to a head and Crispins life is, once again, drastically altered by events he cant control. Not only are his and his friends lives in danger, but the changing political climate has major consequences for his art.

While reading Sailing to Sarantium, the first book in the THE SARANTINE MOSAIC, I had a hard time believing in the characters and the drama I thought the plot lacked the world-shaking significance that the characters seemed to be overwhelmed by at every moment. I felt manipulated like Kay was showing me murder, lust, adultery, shocking brutality, witty repartee, and titillating suggestions to make me feel like there was more going on than there really was. While I liked Kays characters, it felt like a big soap opera to me and I was impatient with the story.

The first part of Lord of Emperors is more of the slow drama and introspection that occurred in Sailing to Sarantium every character analyzing what everyone else says, scrutinizing each gesture, contemplating every look, even reporting how they would think about this word or that gesture when they looked back on it sometime in the future. Were reminded over and over how subtle and dangerous everybody is:

"The room seemed laden and layered with intricacies of past and present and what was to come. Nuances coiling and spreading like incense, subtle and insistent."

There are several sweet and touching scenes, but most of Lord of Emperors is more of the melodrama of Sailing to Sarantium. Finally, about 2/3 of the way through, there is a major upheaval followed by a slow unwinding of its tragic consequences. There are some real heartbreaking scenes in the last third of the novel, and the story ends on a beautifully bittersweet note. It just takes a really long time to get there.

Guy Gavriel Kays strength is making his characters come alive. Thus, when the big events finally occur, they really are painful and tragic and we worry about these peoples futures. I cared about Crispin, his queen, the charioteers, and the cook and his apprentice. However, I didnt feel the need to be privy to every thought they had along the way how many times do I need to be told that Crispin is thinking that only two women in the world wear a particular perfume? THE SARANTINE MOSAIC should have been trimmed down to just one book I would have enjoyed it a lot more.

I also think I would have felt more appreciation for THE SARANTINE MOSAIC if I had read it earlier in my acquaintance with Guy Gavriel Kays work.

Phenomenal second installment

A real nailbiter of a story, the narrator is fantastic with great diversity of voice. The story is likewise written skillfully by King with excellent pacing and interesting characters.

Amazing story and Narration

Characters were a mix of mysterious, funny and dark. The whole story is fantastic.

Narration was top notch.

A Great Book

More of a series of character introductions with little real headway made toward the Tower, but the characters are amazing, as are the circumstances under which they're introduced and it's written and performed with skill. As i said, there's not much distance made toward the Tower here or what even awaits them there, but the adventures the Gunslinger goes on to 'draw the three' are full of peril, wonder, intrigue, tension, drama and all with a surprising amount of humor throughout. The beach, the doors, the lobstrocities (dad-a-chum?) are wonderfully realised. Other than the vivid presence that is the Gunslinger, it's peppered with excellently written characters all-round with scenes tackled from multiple angles and points of view in way that makes such writing seem easy, when it certainly is not. A real 'page' turner (if there is such a thing in an audio book), often engrossing and an incredible performance from Frank Muller. I can't recommend it highly enough and can't wait to listen to The Wastelands to see how the journey continues...

Read it while playing the game!

I started playing the game before reading this book, and finished them both together, there are almost no spoilers shared between the video game and the book, on the contrary, they compliment each other better than any other book+movie or book+video-game I have seen so far.

I recommend you do them both together, don't start one after you finish the other, trust me it will make the experiences on both mediums much more amazing than any one would have been on its own..

I myself play a lot of games but if you don't, I think you might even enjoy it more, you can find the game cheap on online digital stores.

Who was your favorite character and why?

The main character development during the story makes him very interresting. It also makes you question yourself during the story if you would share his views or not as the story progresses.

Which scene was your favorite?

When the main character is returing to his home station and he start asking himself about everything that has happen to him and he survived and others did not.

If you were to make a film of this book, what would the tag line be?

A story that will make you question your own place in the world and what is truly valuable and what is not.

Any additional comments?

The book itself is a bit hard to read on its own. Mainly because it was translated in a very google-like way. With the audiobook, however, it becomes much easier to follow the story all the way to the end. I recommend when you buy the book to buy this audiobook as well. I will guarantee that you will not be dissapointed when you do that.

The Coldfire trilogy was great. This little add-on was just too short and unnecessary. It was well done but it really did not add much to the whole story.

A coldfire prequel

Ever since I read a few novels by C.S. Friedman last year (In Conquest Born, The Wilding, The Madness Season and This Alien Shore) Ive been practically desperate to begin her more famous COLDFIRE SAGA. Friedmans stories are smart and creative and I cant wait to see what else she has to offer. The only thing thats so far kept me from picking up Black Sun Rising, the first COLDFIRE novel, is that I already have a huge stack (I mean hundreds) of audiobooks purchased and ready to read at Audible and on my bookshelves at home. Mostly I collect these when theyre on sale or when publishers send me review copies, so I hoard my precious Audible credits and spend them like a miser.

But I just dont know how much longer I can hold out on COLDFIRE. I actually have Black Sun Rising in my Audible library (purchased, no doubt, in some awesome sale) but I dont have books two and three (When True Night Falls and Crown of Shadows) yet. I picked up Dominion, a prequel to the COLDFIRE saga recently when it was cheap at Audible. And thats what this review is actually about, so I guess I should get to it.

Dominion introduces Friedmans well-known anti-hero Gerald Tarrant, a powerful undead magician. In this story he enters a legendary sentient forest full of seductive fae spirits because he wants to test his own power against it. But there are other beings in the forest. One is a pack of wolves, one of whom is more than he appears to be. Another is a young female knight who along with some companions that have since been slain has been sent to find and kill evil beings (such as Tarrant) who live in the land. Thus there are four powerful forces in the forest the wolf pack with its great strength and prowess, Gerald with his dark magic, the young knight with her faith and courage, and the sentient forest which encloses all the others. Each of these forces will be changed by their encounters with each other and the result sets the scene for whats to come in the rest of the COLDFIRE saga.

Dominion is a short novel, but its packed with drama, sharp insights, and dark chills. I didnt know how to feel about Gerald Tarrant. He seems evil, but I cant help but admire his curious mind and the scientific way he approaches life. I wanted to know more about him and his transformation from human (I assume) to vampire (I assume). There are some provocative hints about his past life in Dominion and I want to know what happened (If I had not loved God so much, there would have been no power in betraying him).

Awesome. You'll Love this

What did you love best about Echoes of Betrayal?

The return of Jennifer Van Dyck as reader was a huge success.

Elizabeth's Dragon is so different then other dragons i am used to reading about and i love it.

The plot is moved along in this story quite well. This is clearly a middle book and while a few threads are wraped up in this tale most are mearly moved along and readed for book 4 and book 5

Dragon. this Dragon has a sense of humor and is clearly not what you expect

Would recommend. The story is solid and moves... we just run out of road so be prepared to stop even though you want to run a full speed! It's going to be hard to wait for the rest of this story, but the author has created several really good inlets to possible stories within this saga and I wouldn't be surprised to see some shorts involving some of the smaller characters.

What other book might you compare Echoes of Betrayal to and why?

Everything up to this point.. I spent the couple of weeks before the release date of Echoes listening to everything from Sheep Farmer;s daughter on.

Great book, but not about Rialla...

This was a great book, but it wasn't about Rialla. Rialla wasn't even in this book. I was greatly disappointed when I first started this book, expecting Rialla. Only to be surprised, when it started talking about a thief named Sham. The book is still great, but because of the description I was extremely disappointed.

Summery is off, and the narrator is not my favorit

What didnt you like about Jennifer James Bradshaws performance?

Her speech is overly enunciated. And just listening to her distracted me from a story I have enjoyed.

Would you consider the audio edition of When Demons Walk to be better than the print version?

about the same. I love the book, and the audio As a audio newbie I've always thought that reading the book is better than listening to someone read it out. In some cases I'd have to say that's the case - some Robin Mckinley stuff is dull, dull, dull in audio when I loved the book - but this isn't the case here. I'd recommend to anyone.

What about Jennifer James Bradshaws performance did you like?

Nothing specific. I've listened to her other recordings for this series and for Raven's Strike and enjoy listening to her.

While a Demon Stalks

Loved the storytelling and storyline.Kept things interesting and intriguing.Alot of twists and turns,different characters to keep a good flow of pace without being overdone.

Great Stand Alone book for the Aralorn series

This book is a great read. I would work great as a standalone book in the series, and it leaves you wanting more. I really enjoyed listening to this books.

The Performance could have been a little louder at some parts, but it was good overall.
