A good book for younger readers.

This book is probably best suited for young adult readers. I enjoyed it. I would have enjoyed it much more when I was 16.

My criticisms are: The viewpoint of the storyteller is that of a very young person. For example, a 17 year old character talks about something that happened to him when he was "a child" as "very long ago." References to "school" seem more like American High School (Lunch for example) then something from Heroic Fantasy. There is nothing wrong with this, but as an adult reader, I stumbled over it and lost my "suspension of disbelief" for a moment. Also, there are so many contractions in the story that the narrator seems to stumble over them. (I didn't so I couldn't.) I counted 7 in 3 short sentences at one point. I think that this is something that we ignore in print but notice in audio book versions much more readily. Also, references to magic spells as if they were something you can look up in an encyclopedia (I tried to cast "Mage Shield" but I failed) come off like Gaming references. I wish the author had invented unique or "magical language" names for these things to avoid that.

Mercedes Lackey seems to be more of an editor then co-writer with "The Phoenix Unchained." She has a very distinct voice, and it does not present itself very often. Her masterful ability to "pace" a story does come through.

Taken as a whole, it was entertaining, and I'll read the sequel.

Only Mediocre and it goes downhill from there

A typical beginning with no real surprises, two teenagers set out on an adventure that the reader knows from the start will become a life changing event and cause them to grow in strength. But then the whining begins. The emotional drivel was only moderately annoying at the beginning but by the third book it is just absurd. Twenty seconds on a huge battle and then twenty minutes on bemoaning their horrible fate.

Another Classic

I think this is my favorite Narnia story next to the lion, witch and the wardrobe. I really enjoyed it. The reader was again brilliant. I was spellbound whilst listening to it.

A humourous tale of bravery

Would you consider the audio edition of The Horse and His Boy: The Chronicles of Narnia, Book 5 to be better than the print version?

The print is better with the illustrations by Pauline Baynes, but the audiobook is great to listen along with while reading.

Which character as performed by Alex Jennings was your favorite?

Bree the horse was my favourite character as he had to overcome his cowardice in a time of danger to help Shasta deliver his message. Alex Jennings did a great job with all the character voices.

Would you listen to The Horse and His Boy again? Why?

As I love 'The Chronicles of Narnia' and this is part of them, I would always read it in its place in the series. It is not my favourite book in the Chronicles, but it is an important part.

If youve listened to books by C.S. Lewis before, how does this one compare?

My comment above really covers this question. I think it is important to read the Chronicles in the order in which the events happen in Narnia, so this book cannot be skipped.

One thing I enjoyed was having a different reader for each of the 7 books. For me that added a lot of interest and quality.

Have you listened to any of Alex Jenningss other performances before? How does this one compare?

I haven't heard Alex Jennings narrate anything else.

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

This would have to be the moment when Shasta/Cor and his father are reunited.

The book keeps the story of Narnia alive and moves it onward. Read/listen to it.

This book was so beautifully written and so easy to listen to. The way it was written JUST SUPERB. I was mesmorized by the way the author wrote every word.

Endure to your final reward

This third book in the trilogy is a bit slow and depressing for the first two thirds of it, however, it must be added that it is written with reason and is even an integral part of the setting. Once one gets beyond that the series comes to its fruition and the end, though bittersweet, is one of the most satisfying ends to any series I have ever read. If you have gotten this far, come just a bit further. The journey is worth it.

Better the second time

I found this trilogy to be fascinating. If you've read Joseph Campbell's description of the hero in mythology then you will better understand this story. Lewis is similar to Frodo, Luke Skywalker and Harry Potter; all share the same fate. In addition, check out the Celtic myth of Lugh.

To understand Lawhead's mythology/theology I recommend reading his biography of St. Patrick, "Patrick" and note how it compares to this story.

It was the second time I listened to this trilogy that I truly enjoyed it. Knowing what's going to happen makes it easier to understand Lawhead's symbolism. This is a bard's tale.

Good book, mediocre performance.

The story is good, but the fact that the narrator chose to use an Indian accent for characters set in an alternate ancient Britain is distracting.

What didnt you like about Robert Whitfields performance?

Perhaps words and names were mispronounced initially, I don't know. Clearly the narrator feels that they were because his pronunciation of the names is hugely different from the first two books. It makes me feel like I am in another series. Also the accent is painful. I am having trouble getting through the book This happens a lot with series' of books. Sometimes I even wonder if the narrator reviewed the previous perfomances. Sometimes I wonder that even when there is not a new narrator.

I have listened to the trilogy twice, and read it three times. Love Stephens work.

What other book might you compare The Endless Knot to and why?

I might compare it to Tolkiens, Middle earth works, but that comparison is over used, closer comparison would be, i guess, C.S. Lewis, because of the two seperate but connected worlds of Albion and Earth, and Narnia and Earth.

Would you be willing to try another one of Robert Whitfields performances?

Not real happy with the change of narrator at the end of a series, he did a good job but the differences in pronunciation was frustrating and a bit disorienting to me. Mr.

Tasteful, Entertaining, Engaging

I was wary of this series because of some comments by other reviews specifically regarding the "gay" theme of the novels, however, it was very tastefully done, and you actually find yourself wanting the relationship to succeed. The story itself is engaging and truly entertaining, you find yourself liking the characters and there are more than a few laugh out loud moments. I myself appreciate long stories because I get attached to the characters and the story and I don't mind the stretch over several books. While not as good as George RR Martin's series, it is an enjoyable, uncomplicated read. I also liked the reader, despite his limited voices. I think him perfect for the story. To me, the simplicity of the story verses Martin's does not warrant a complex variety of voices. Hope this helps!!

Pretty darned good

Darker than the first book, "Luck in the Shadows" - which you should definitely read before starting this one! - this was quite an immersing read.

With Skala preparing for war with Plenimar - a war that continues into the next book in this series - "Stalking Darkness" illustrates just how evil the enemy truly is. While it's not especially graphic, I found a couple of parts a bit too much for my imagination and had to (briefly) skip forward.

I started the series with some hesitation after some reviewers of the first book complained about the "sex scenes"; assuming you've read the first book, you'll know what an exaggeration THAT was! There's a bit more "nookie" going on in this book, but I don't think it amounts to more than what one would see in a PG movie. Or prime time TV, for that matter.

I've had a growing pet peeve with the last several books I've read, so I also need to add that this book does not suffer that same annoying fate; thank you, Ms. Flewelling, for writing a decent ending! If you've ever invested 25+ hours to read through a series only to have the ending last a disapointing 30 minutes or less, fear not! Although I definitely plan to get the next book (Traitor's Moon), Stalking Darkness wraps up the first two books with an ending that makes you think "Oh, well that's alright then."

Audible.com doesn't have "Traitor's Moon" yet, but with both the first two books just coming out this year, I'm hoping the third book is not far behind!!!

A great series continues to develop excitingly

Lynn Flewelling continues to take us on a highly enjoyable ride with this second installment of the Nightrunner Series. Many things that were set up in ways large and small in the first book come to exciting conclusions and many more are set up for future action and intrigue.

Again, Raymond Todd is an acceptable reader for the series, but in no way a great one.

Great Book Mediocre Audobook

I've loved these books since I was a kid (30 years ago) and have read them all at least 20 times over the years but the audio versions of all the Pern books are probably the most lackluster things I've ever heard... If I only heard the audio version I would never pick up the actual books and would have missed out on some of the most enjoyable reading of my life. Perhaps if the readings were complete or the narrator read with some enthusiasm they would have been better accepted but as it stands I wouldn't recommend them as some of your better material.

Excellent read; very poor recording

I've been a member for a very short time, and thusfar, I've generally been very impressed with both the selection (esp. sci-fi/fan!) and the quality of the recordings. Unfortunately, I've also been remiss in giving feedback - until some member reviews gave me some very useful info about something I was considering purchasing: I appreciated the help so I thought I'd return the favor. To that end:

I'm a huge McCaffrey fan, and I love the traditional book, 'The White Dragon'. Unfortunately, this audio version was a disaster with a capital 'D'. Firstly, it was abridged, truncated, whatever: chunks were missing, and any McCaffrey fan won't appreciate that. Secondly, the narrator was pretty lousy - a female narrator was used for a story that is largely told in the first person point of view of a young male protagonist, and hadn't the gift for such a feat. (Yes, I've heard some very able readers who do extremely well in representing both genders.) She made the character of Jaxom (who matures from being a rather young child to being a young man during the course of the book) sound whiny, which is about as far removed from his character and personality as one can get. Thirdly, and worst: the production value was *HORRIBLE*!!! It just sounded scratchy, and amateurish - sibilants were harsh and drawn-out - I regret to say the whole thing was just a mess. I don't believe this audio recording was in any way reflective of the usual high standard that Audible maintains. I certainly plan to keep acquiring audio stuff here - but in conscience, I can't say anything to anyone considering this recording but, 'don't waste your time'!

**Note: Anyone looking for a well-done McCaffrey audiobook should seek out the dramatization of, 'Nerilka's Story'. Like most dramatizations, it is abridged, but the 'characters' do an excellent job, and the production value is good.

Are you sure of the reading order?

I believe that Dragonquest and Dragonflight go before the White Dragon. In fact, if you want to get the best chronology, it is best to read Dragonquest, Dragonflight, Dragonsong, Dragonsinger then The White Dragon. I highly recommend all of the Pern books. If you haven't read them they will provide many hours of enjoyment.

A great tale of a under dog, er.. under dragon

Perfect story on why you should not judge unless you have walked a mile in the same shoes. This is my favorite book of the series. As always the narration is great. The story pulled me in and made me cheer for every win the Copper achieved.

Exceptional! Well worth a read or two!!

This was fantastic! I can't wait to listen to the next and the next and the finale! So begins the age of fire!

Outcast shows heart.

Yes, it was great read and story of its own.

Copper or Rugard. he develops and really becomes the dragon he should of been.

Awesome, he really brings the dragons and all creatures to life.

Better than expected

Where does Dragon Outcast rank among all the audiobooks youve listened to so far?

It was probably a middle read for me out of the books I have listened to I enjoy the series which is why I listened to it else I wouldn't have just because of the dislike to the character, but the author does a great job making the outcast a more likable character if you hadn't read the initial books of series you would like him a lot.

I ingeneral like the main character the outcast but the bats really helped me along in the story Thernadad

My favorite scene is when the outcast makes it to the the I elieve second battlefield and won't give up on injured dragons even though the rest think they are just meant to die and he stands up for them and helps to save the battle and those dragons lives

Book in the Dragaon series about the least likable character but E.E. Knight was able to show his redeeming qualities. Darker of all the novels but not scary.

Pretty good

Any additional comments?

The focus is more on the individual characters point of view and memories within a small town and an extended family of the Harmac (their name for city-state Baron). They are an earthy crew, no high-tea stuff, and it is a small town of mostly working class people. It does not confusingly jump around from past to present. The past is given to us in the characters remembering and commenting on what happened, which I thought gave a better feel to the local culture. It has strong male and female characters which seemed genuine instead of lame. I hate stupid characters and ones the audience is supposed to like, but given every reason to not even respect, much less identify with, and we dont get that much here, thankfully. The bad guy dialog makes them sound dumber than they are because most do some decent strategizing and tactical thinking and this offset the dialog for me. The plot of this novel and other two of this series are about various forces seeking take control of this land between larger economic powers. Even so, it doesnt have that huge scale, epic feel I dont like in my D&D stories so I liked all three novels.

I know this may sound a bit odd but when I first began to listen to this book the readers performance was awful. His bad guy voices all sounded like they had marbles in their mouths. At one point I grew tired of how bad it was so I sped it up so that I could finish with it. But when I put it to 1.20 the performance actually became good. Can't say if they slowed it to add to the read time or what they are thinking. After this fix I'm now going to purchase the second book. I wouldn't even entertain the idea if I hadn't done this. The story has pulled me in now and I look forward to the next book and recommend it to any fans of D&D novels.

This book is a fantastic listen and read. I really enjoyed it. anyone who like a warrior and can sling up some magic as well will enjoy this. Just because it's called sword mage doesn't mean it's a fighter/wizard.

This was more towards the bottom end of captivating Forgotten Realms/Audible books I've listened to.

This was my first book by Richard Baker. It was not a bad book by any means but it played it pretty close to the vest. Really, you knew what was coming, it wasn't too exciting and that was that. Not a whole lot of interesting realms lore or anything outstanding to say, "you need to read this!"

Better and better

This is an example of a series that, unlike many, keeps getting better with each book. I've been a long-time fan of Bujold, and I admire her ability to build entirely original (and different) worlds.

She has widened the world of these novels significantly in the 3rd volume, and introduced some delightful new characters. This was a fast-paced, intriguing story that I thoroughly enjoyed.

The quality keeps coming

The third installment to a great story. The quality of the writing and narration continues. The fantasy world is expanding and more insights are explained. If you liked for the first two this is more of the same.

Amazing

This is a must read series. I can't wait until the next book comes out. This storyline is well written and the chacter detail is just amazing. This author did an outstanding job.

Intriguing sequel

As someone who has read everything that the author has written, I was so happy that she seems to have come into her own again with this series. The books just make you happy!

This third one in the series gives you even more details on Dag's awakening talents and also a lot of action as they travel. Very enjoyable and highly recommended!

Great narration, story sometimes boring.

After I listened to book 2, I decided I wasn't going on with this series. But they put this one on sale and I got it. The basic story is pretty good, but I'm still tired of all the description of everything the characters do. For example, when Dag is removing his hook, she writes something like "Dag unbuckled the harness of his hook, removed it and set it aside." We've been reading about his hook for 3 books. How else would he remove it? And then he's not going to stand there and hold it. He's going to set it aside. All she needed to say was "Dag removed his hook". That's just one little example, but basically, I think a third of the book could have been deleted and made a better read. There were many times I drifted off, thinking of other things because I was bored. Book 2 was the same way. IF they put book 4 on sale, I MIGHT get it. Her writing is too wordy.

Wonderful Read

Well worth reading/listening to. Great story and the speaker has fun reading it to the listener.

Yet another trilogy where I am left hanging in anticipation of book 3.

And another author whose name I will search on regularly for new books....

Action, clever magic / mystery, great characters..... well narrated. What's not to like. Ticked all my usual boxes.

If you're a fan of "epic fantasy", whilst not quite as "epic" as a Sanderson or an Abercrombie, it's still up there with the good ones!

A much better story than the first and I absolutely loved it. The character development was excellent, which I thought it lacked in the first novel. I found myself caring for what happened to certain characters. There was a small amount of believable romance/love, some characters personalities were changing due to the battles they faced and how hey felt about them and all character plot arcs were extremely likeable. It was also enhanced by a strong wit that was coming from Brian McClellan through some of the characters, which had me laughing out loud a couple of times.

The action is where this series really stands out though. The entire book is packed with more powder mage/privileged fights and epic battles than one could possibly hope for. If military or action based fantasy is your bag, then the Powder Mage trilogy is a must for you. It is not just mindless action though; the politics and story plot that sit behind them are also superb, with plenty of surprises swinging you back and forth. I wasnt bored for a single minute of the story, and it didnt take me long at all to finish this audiobook.

Brian McClellan may be Brandon Sandersons student, but I feel like he has got plenty of his own styles and techniques and he has separated this link further through this sequel. It sounds funny, but hearing characters in tight spots actually swearing, and having quite graphic violence, adds to the grittiness and realism in the world, which I feel Brandon sometimes lacks.
