    Title: Sweetland
    Author: Michael Crummey
    Narrator: John Lee
    Format: Unabridged
Length: 9 hrs and 12 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 01-19-15
Publisher: HighBridge, a division of Recorded Books
Ratings: 4 of 5 out of 93 votes
    Genres: Fiction, Contemporary
    Publisher's Summary:
The scarcely populated town of Sweetland rests on the shore of a remote Canadian island. Its slow decline finally reaches a head when the mainland government offers each islander a generous resettlement package - the sole stipulation being that everyone must leave. Fierce and enigmatic Moses Sweetland, whose ancestors founded the village, is the only one to refuse. As he watches his neighbors abandon the island, he recalls the town's rugged history and its eccentric cast of characters. Evoking The Shipping News, Michael Crummey - one of Canada's finest novelists - conjures up the mythical, sublime world of Sweetland's past amid a storm-battered landscape haunted by local lore. As in his critically acclaimed novel Galore, Crummey masterfully weaves together past and present, creating in Sweetland a spectacular portrait of one man's battle to survive as his environment vanishes around him.
    Critic Reviews:
"Crummey lovingly carves out the privation and inner intricacies that mark his characters' lives with folkloric embellishments and the precision of the finest scrimshaw." (Publishers Weekly)
"Narrator John Lee's deep voice and rhythmic intonation are perfect for this beautiful novel.... Sweetland is a spectacular meld of story and performance." (AudioFile)

    Language: English

    Publisher's Summary:
Join cruising legends Lin and Larry Pardey as from England they proceed into the Baltic, Denmark, Sweden, Finland, and Germany. During their voyage they dealt with armed guards on the Polish waterfront who watched while the people greeted them with flowers and fruit. They weathered a fierce mast-under broach in a Baltic gale. And experienced great friendships found in harbors large and small.
Beautifully narrated by Sonja Feld, the New Street Nautical Audio edition of Lin and Larry's now classic book - the second in their famous Seraffyn series - will prove a pleasure for all sailors, even armchair sailors!
    Members Reviews:
    light story, painful narration
Would you say that listening to this book was time well-spent? Why or why not?
the usual for a reader of pardey's adventures story-telling: light, simple, easy listening
What did you like best about this story?
I liked the numerous snapshots of life in small ports in the UK, Scandinavia and the Iberian peninsula.
How did the narrator detract from the book?
The narrator was painful to hear. The poor woman decided (or was asked) to render dialogs with foreigners in voice and accent imitations that were border-line insulting. Imagine old Englishmen speaking like decrepit morons, north Europeans speaking like a Mel Brooks parody of Nazis and easter Europeans speaking like KGB agents in cold war spy movies...

We want MORE MEG! We want MORE MEG!
Would you consider the audio edition of The Nightingale Before Christmas to be better than the print version?
I love reading Donna Andrew's Meg Langslow series. However, reading isn't possible when I'm working with my hands in my studio. That's when I listen to audio books.
What was one of the most memorable moments of The Nightingale Before Christmas?
I loved when the community pitched in to help Meg's mother with her room.
What about Bernadette Dunnes performance did you like?
Ms. Dunne has a beautiful voice. It has a natural flow. Her characters are distinctive without being cartoonish.
Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?
This book keeps me at my workbench. That's what I want from an audiobook.
    Any additional comments?
I like a good easy listening series. Characters that I'm familiar with help me get straight to work. I'm an artist. I love being able to create and listen to a good book at the same time.
    Bernadette Dunne is a Gem
Love Dunne's narration and the mystery is interesting, though this release is no where near as funny as the earlier books in the Meg Langslow series. If you haven't read/listened to We'll Always Have Parrots, then please, please, please give it a try. It's hilarious. There are funny moments in The Nightingale Before Christmas, but the focus definitely on the murder mystery. I wish the publisher would release ALL of the books in this series in audio because Dunne nails Meg's humor and like to hear her perform books 2-3 and 6-13.
smiles and laughter this mystery is very nice
The characters are as always in Donna Andrews books are funny especially the kids.
Its a Meg Langslow story, though not the best
For some reason this isn't one of my favorites from this author. I wish more of Donna Andrews' books were available on Audible. I have them in print, but often prefer to hear them performed. Maybe its too convoluted. Maybe the regulars aren't as involved as usual.
    Nice Christmas story
I really enjoy this series. I enjoy the intertwining of small town life with a mystery. This story was no exception.

The rare book world is stunned when a reclusive collector, Adam Diehl, is found dead on the floor of his Montauk home, hands severed, surrounded by valuable inscribed books and original manuscripts that have been vandalized beyond repair. Adam's sister, Meghan, and her lover, Will - a convicted but unrepentant literary forger - struggle to come to terms with the seemingly incomprehensible murder. But when Will begins receiving threatening letters written in the handwriting of long-dead authors from someone who knows secrets about Adam's death and Will's past, he understands his own life is also on the line.

Loved The Long Home - Kindle edition BUT
But... unfortunately, my Kindle copy has many typo's and spelling errors. Can't understand why this edition was not proof read more carefully. Some pages have two or more misspelled words on a page, and it is not the hillbilly vernacular, just plain errors. I don't know how difficult a process it is to transform these books to digital Kindle, but this book has problems that make it annoying to read.
In spite of all that, I love the novel, and will finish it within the week, it is a very good book.
    Good story.
I found myself slowing my reading pace to fully appreciate the prose. I am looking forward to the movie adaptation. Good story.

The story line was great, but I soon found myself leafing through my dictionary searching for yet another big word which I had never seen. Unfortunately this became tiring and took away from the flow of the novel. I wish the author had restrained himself along these lines.
    Too many typo's
The story is great but the translation from the paper text to the online text was terrible. Every page had a few errors on it. Having to decipher what William Gay actually wrote and what was a mistake took me out of the text and made the reading impossible to get lost in. Terrible!
    A tangle of Caracters
Would like more of Amber Rose. Nice descriptive writing from life in Tennessee. Interesting follow of generations and relationships. It pictures a very difficult lifestyle with strong endurance.

    My thoughts on this story
I enjoyed the story. The characters are well rounded but you must read the previous books to truly understand the plot. Even though there is alot of war strategy it is not over whelming or tedious but constant with the need of the story. All in all a good continuation of a sequel from a brilliant start "Magication".
    same same but different
Overall it was enjoyable, at least I wanted to finish it. However I didn't really feel that there was a strong storyline, it felt a little desperate. I was almost relieved when it finished so that I could move on.
    What a great listen
Another epic tale from the master! Particularly enjoyed this one, it got emotional. Straight onto the next one....
    Fabulous
Classic Feist, really enjoyed listening to this. Sorry when it ended! Really like the narrator, some books are ruined by poor narrator but this isn't one of them.
    Love it
Keep them coming Raymond. Can't get enough of the characters, the locations or the stories.

  • Florence Gordon Audiobook by Brian Morton

    Title: Florence Gordon
    Author: Brian Morton
    Narrator: Dawn Harvey
    Format: Unabridged
Length: 7 hrs and 15 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 09-23-14
    Publisher: Blackstone Audio, Inc.
Ratings: 3.5 of 5 out of 85 votes
    Genres: Fiction, Contemporary
    Publisher's Summary:
A wise and entertaining novel about a woman who has lived life on her own terms for 75 defiant and determined years, only to find herself suddenly thrust to the center of her familys various catastrophes.
Meet Florence Gordon: blunt, brilliant, cantankerous, and passionate, a feminist icon to young women. At 75, Florence has earned her right to set down the burdens of family and work and shape her legacy at long last. But just as she is beginning to write her long-deferred memoir, her son Daniel returns to New York from Seattle with his wife and daughter, and they embroil Florence in their dramas, clouding the clarity of her days with the frustrations of middle age and the confusions of youth. And then there is her left foot, which is starting to drag.
With searing wit, sophisticated intelligence, and a tender respect for humanity in all its flaws, Brian Morton introduces a constellation of unforgettable characters. Chief among them is Florence, who can humble the fools surrounding her with one barbed line, but who eventually finds there are realities even she cannot outwit.
    Members Reviews:
    Unsentimental
What did you love best about Florence Gordon?
Exquisitely written, intelligent/wise book. As an audio listener, I especially liked the many short chapters.
What did you like best about this story?
Florence herself: Her toughness, self-integrity, and grit. I decided to read this because of PBS book reviewer Maureen Corrigan's description of her as a blunt and unlikeable, and I was in the mood for something unsentimental and not nicely wrapped up with a bow.
What does Dawn Harvey bring to the story that you wouldnt experience if you just read the book?
Dawn Harvey made an ambitious effort to portray the characters with nuance. She didn't always do it perfectly, sometime blending one voice over into another, but she did capture them well.
If you were to make a film of this book, what would the tag line be?
I don't know about the tag line, but if Lena Dunham could be aged by several decades, she should play the lead.
    Disappointed in Narration
Would you try another book from Brian Morton and/or Dawn Harvey?
Morton yes, Harvey - not so much.
Would you be willing to try another one of Dawn Harveys performances?
Harvey's narration of Florence Gordon is so annoying to me that I couldn't finish the book. She has assigned "voices" to each of the characters, but Harvey can't seem to remember which character has what voice, or the voices change based on who the character is speaking to, and sometimes accents fade in and out. It was so annoying that I found myself listening to Harvey instead of listening to the characters.
Harvey over-animates the voices and turns the characters into caricatures. Florence speaks in a growly voice until Harvey forgets to maintain it, the teen granddaughter is portrayed as a stereotyped ninny, when clearly she's an intelligent and thoughtful girl.
Harvey makes all the characters overact. She should have voiced them as mature adults, using lower case tone. Instead EVERYONE IS SPEAKING IN UPPER CASE as though Harvey is trying to get a point across. No nuance.
What I like about books is you can assign or imagine voices to the characters. I love audio books, but I especially appreciate the narrators who don't try to act out the book for me. That's what my imagination is for.

    Title: The Drowning Season
    Author: Alice Hoffman
    Narrator: Bernadette Dunne
    Format: Unabridged
Length: 6 hrs and 34 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 09-12-14
    Publisher: Blackstone Audio, Inc.

    Genres: Fiction, Contemporary
    Publisher's Summary:
The matriarch of a Long Island clan with a stubbornly suicidal son and a defiant, restless granddaughter, Esther has hired a Russian landscaper to watch over the family as well as the grounds of their secluded waterfront estate. But he has been watching Esther, too. And his love for her is growing wild enough to uproot them all.
The author of Here on Earth and The River King presents a "stunning and hypnotic" novel that "interweaves past and present with piercing images and unfailing energy" (Publishers Weekly).
    Members Reviews:
The Drowning Season - (almost a lullaby)
Alice Hoffman once again weaves her magic. Esther the Black, living in the Compound with her grandmother Esther the White, and the other colorful family members....drifting from one day to the next, but never to an inevitable conclusion. Strange, soothing, never boring....vintage Alice Hoffman.
    I was bored
Quite frankly, I thought this was a boring book. I couldn't connect with the characters and it all felt like it was happening in quicksand.
    Disjointed and Disconnected
Odd story. Odd family. Hard to understand the dysfunction. Still I read it in one sitting. Cover to cover. Most interesting characters are the fisherfolk. The story is so odd, there is even a midget. Go figure. I'm
    Complex and involving
As always Alice Hoffmann tells a deeply insightful tale. She weaves the lives of an immigrant family into a story of rivalry and desperation underlying a surface of prosperity. Too complex for me to adequately describe, Hoffman's writing evokes her characters thoughts and emotions as the story progresses.
    Cold Water & Smelly Fish
The story moved slowly, but that allowed time to build up the characters, some of which were likeable and sympathetic, some not so much. I found I had compassion for "The Blacks" father far more than for her. The moral of the story is don't trust the account who says they can handle everything.
