Publisher's Summary:
Hallucinabulia: the Dream Diary of an Unintended Solitarian is a document of disaster and recovery. The third volume in the Ghosts Trilogy, it joins Ghosts and Ballyhoo: Memoirs of a Failed L.A. Music Journalist and Chasing the Last Whale, a fictional black comedy about love and suicide in contemporary, wartime America.
Like its two companion titles, Hallucinabulia explores the theme of overcoming a deeply traumatic past by transforming anger over loss into gratitude for what once was. Plagued by chronic nightmares until an incurable illness finally allowed him to achieve happiness, Wictor published this very private record in order to bear witness, banish, and entertain. The healing power of laughter is again demonstrated and affirmed.
Wictor's near-perfect recall allowed him to capture some of the most off-kilter, frightening, strange, and funny imagery that a twisted imagination could ever devise. The diary - divided into 12 chapters organized by subject matter - provides context to the memoir and the novel by presenting the nocturnal battles the author fought with his demons, as well as the salvation that his angels conferred. Straight from Wictor's subconscious, the dialogue, bizarre scenery, and outlandish situations are preserved in the form of intricately detailed short stories.
The characters introduced in Ghosts and Ballyhoo and romanticized in Chasing the Last Whale are finally set free in Hallucinabulia, being no longer bound by law, nature, or even reality. The result is a book that travels an arc from incomprehensibly brutal to indestructibly optimistic, as intense evil gives way to infinite beauty and good.

An interesting trip into the mind of an unusual person
I would highly recommend reading Wictor's previous stuff, particularly Ghosts and Ballyhoo, before diving in to this. An interesting trip into the mind of an unusual person.
Great book!
Great writer tackling a fascinating subject. Had to get this after reading his superb tweets on twitter and was not disappointed.
A journey continued in dreams...
One time basist and music journalist, Thomas Wictor, continues the journey he began to describe in Ghosts and Ballyhoo, chronicling the dreams and nightmares that populated his sleep. Transparent and unrelentingly honest, the dreams and the people in Wictor's life emerge in visceral detail. There are times when the conscious and unconscious moments in the journey are impossible to distinguish.
As a spiritual director, I often find myself working with people whose dreams mark some of the most significant progress they make. Tellingly, that happens here. Wictor prefaces the description of his dreams, noting that the work he did in the wake of personal and professional loss was one that converted "anger over loss into gratitude for what once was.â "Bearing witness" to that journey, he reassures his readers, âYou are not alone.â
Note: Wictor's book does not chronicle a method for analyzing those dreams, nor does it offer a therapeutic or spiritual analysis of those dreams. Hallucinabulia is, instead, a living archive, a journey shared with brutal honesty and without pat answers, but one that ends in hope.
