    Publisher's Summary:
The fascinating account of how the story of the Buddha was transformed into the legend of a Christian saint.
The tale of St. Josaphat, a prince who gave up his wealth and kingdom to follow Jesus, was widely told and read in the Middle Ages, translated into a dozen languages, and even cited by Shakespeare in The Merchant of Venice. Only in the 19th century did scholars note the parallels between the lives of Buddha and Josaphat. In Search of the Christian Buddha traces the Buddhas story from India to Persia to Jerusalem and then throughout Europe, as it was rewritten by Muslim, Jewish, and Christian authors, illustrating its unsuspected integration into European culture. Through a comparison of the tales various versions, this book reveals surprising convergences and divergences - between Christianity and Buddhism on subjects including the meaning of death, the problem of desire, and the view of women.

    verbose, but informative
In-depth review: tangled transmissions, east to west and back again
Canonized unwittingly as St. Josaphat, a corruption of "bodhisattva," the Buddha, condemned as an idol worshipped by his duped followers, had his story transmitted after long centuries within the hagiography translated to convert the Japanese in the 1600s. So runs one of many twists in the tale translated by Peggy McCracken and introduced by Donald S. Lopez in a companion to this book, as a Penguin Classic. Gui de Cambrai (around 1220-25) adapted the story into French verse; McCracken renders it efficiently into modern English. Gui takes the core elements of the Buddha legend. 1) The prediction that the prince will be a saint or a king. 2) The ensuing protection by his father the king to keep him from the sights of the world. This ruse fails, as a series of chariot rides reveal mortality, sickness, age, and death to the coddled lad. 3.) Then, seductive women seek to dissuade the prince from his destiny and enlightenment as he vows to depart the palace for a life of asceticism. But first, to fulfill his duty, he fathered an heir, as a prince who is expected to carry on the royal family line.
The tale of Barlaam and Josaphat (see my July 2014 review) was one of many which told the Buddha's story with nobody suspecting this until the 1600s. A 1446 editor of Marco Polo's journey caught on to a resemblance. Then scholars in the 19th century, investigating the sources for the misunderstood origins of Shakyamuni, or Prince Siddhartha, finally figured out the elaborate and entangled transmission gone haywire. Lopez, as a noted scholar of Buddhist reception in the West (see Prisoners of Shangri-La on Tibet and The Scientific Buddha for attempts to reconcile the historical Buddha with post-Darwinian science; both reviewed by me), is well-suited to convey these crossed messages. Joined by medievalist Peggy McCracken, the two seek In Search of the Christian Buddha to explain the origins of the tales told throughout the Middle Ages. The Buddha's story was embedded into narratives and biographies which asserted often the superiority of non-Buddhist ideas.
Here's the basics of the book. In Persia in the 8th c. a Muslim writer compiled Bilawhar and Budasaf. Armies of Islam had begun entering northwestern India, the first home of Buddhism. They spread the stories westward.

    Publisher's Summary:
I can remember it like it was yesterday. It was January 1st of 2012 around 3:00 am. I awoke from a force that was so strong that it had me reaching down for my bed which I was laying on (literally it had lifted me off my bed). I immediately grabbed for my journal and pen in obedience to a still small voice. I was accustom to always keeping a journal and pen nearby because that is actually one of the 4 R's (Record) of Formula forty days and forty nights which I was previously working on. As I begin to write per instructions of that still small voice my hand was shaking and my heart was racing, because I was writing about Satan in first person. As I continued to write I begin to pray for peace, provision, and protection. A great calm came over me but it was as if I was still in a trance. I wrote for at least the next 10 hours nonstop until there was no more room left in my journal.
I'm writing this explanation for the controversial title as an apology to any that I may have offended. Please understand that more attention is really something that I could do without. I am very content with my portion in life and do not seek many things outside of the path which the creator has provided for me. This audiobook has nothing to do with worshiping anything created. It will however challenge a lot of our thinking and actions. We are so much greater than our actions dictate most of the time. My prayer is that the Testimony of Satan will clear up a lot of myths and identify areas of fear so that we are able to remove them. If at any point in the audiobook you begin to become very confused, angry, fearful, or just feeling betrayed. I would suggest that you put the audiobook down for a few days and seek clarity through prayer, meditation, or whatever is the most effective outlet for you. This audiobook was not written to be confusing but anything that is extremely powerful also has the potential to be extremely dangerous.

    Hair Raising...Must read
Satan's message to the author was seemingly hair-raising yet telling. This is an informative read in which believers and non-believers can enjoy. Satan's mission to destroy man-kind has been continuously sought since his fall from Heaven and will continue to be. Brown writes " It appeared that the archfiend had some form of sadness, but it made sense in that death and destruction have no power over rejuvenation and life." In learning how even Satan exists in infinite torture, this piece serves as a warning to man-kind and gives a clear understanding of how Satan has worked towards the demise of man.
Christians should be equipped to know who and what it is that they are fighting. Without knowing, it is easy to fall victim to the enemy. This read depicts many avenues of attack that Satan has been successful in and also what he has in store. In my opinion, it is essentially the enemy's "play-book." With the Hand of God. No enemy formed against us will prosper. This is definitely as must read!
    Very important book
I am going to be completely honest, I was really nervous about reading this book. A friend at church recommended I read it and I really admire this person as a Christian, so I decided to read it because of that.
I was raised to fear Satan and so I find myself avoiding reading anything about him other than the Bible of course. I read the book and I am so glad that I did.

  • The New Atheists Audiobook by Tina Beattie

    Format: Unabridged
Length: 5 hrs and 39 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 03-06-14
    Publisher: Prospero Media
Ratings: 5 of 5 out of 3 votes
Genres: Religion & Spirituality, Religious Thought
    Publisher's Summary:
From its gradual decline during the latter part of the twentieth century, religion has been catapulted back into public consciousness, not least by acts of violence, extremism and various forms of fundamentalism. In this lively and provocative contribution to the debate the leading British feminist theologian, Tina Beattie, argues that the threat of religious fanaticism is mirrored by a no less virulent and ignorant secular fanaticism which has taken hold of the intellectual classes in Britain and America.
Its High Priest is Richard Dawkins, author of The God Delusion, but its disciples and acolytes include well-known public figures such as philosophers Sam Harris, Daniel Dennett and A C Grayling, journalists Christopher Hitchens and Polly Toynbee, and novelists Martin Amis and Ian McEwan. Theologians such as Alister McGrath and Keith Ward have defended the rationality of Christian beliefs about God, but both sides neglect wider questions about faith, science, power and justice in a postmodern world, which impinge deeply on all our lives.
The New Atheists calls for a more wide-ranging and creative dialogue across religious and cultural boundaries. It will intrigue every open-minded reader, believer or non-believer.
    Members Reviews:
I'm Very Glad To Have Found This Audiobook
I recently heard of Tina Beattie via her tension with the Vatican that I saw written about on a blog somewhere.
And personally, I always really enjoy reading different authors that the Vatican wants to censure, and as a believing Catholic, I'm always looking for good Catholic literature to read, and often looking up what Feminist literature the admins are trying to stamp out usually provides for great, great and deep and insightful reading that often brings me closer to God.
And that's what this book did. Really, this book was a total surprise. I had no idea that there was an audible edition, and as soon as I saw it I bought it and read it in a couple days.
There is much, much more here than a treatment of The New Atheists and Tina Beattie's thoughts on that camp. If you want to sum this up in a few logical-esque sentences, this is more of an indictment of fundamentalism and it's use in corrupting both science and religion.
Tina Beattie exposes some of science's triumphs over religion and religion's triumphs over science, and maybe even saying that is missing the point a bit,
Because the goal of this book is to show that science must not seek to eradicate religion and religion must not seek to eradicate science.
She also spends some time arguing against the use of rhetoric and arguments in the dialogue between science and religion and suggests instead that art is a much better space for our mutual worlds to dialogue in.
And the narrator does a very, very good job. She made the book read well and I think did a very good and clear job.
This book was an absolute joy to read.
    A Smart, Straight-Forward Critique...
of the obvious problem with the "New Atheists," led by their messiah (one has to love the irony in the book's cover) Richard Dawkins, namely, that their entire approach is based on two false assumptions: 1) all theists are radical, fundamentalist, literalist nutjobs, and 2) science and theology are naturally, diametrically opposed to one another.

    Clear, objective and well written
If you haven't read A LOT already about such subjects as: angelic influences, aliens and UFOs, death and near-death experiences, spirit communication and spiritual encounters, then your consciousness will surely be expanded by reading this. It is very well organized and beautifully written. The authors were obviously on the spiritual path exploring whatever they could find with an open mind and heart. They speak from experience and are incredibly adept at giving you a clear synopsis of the topic. I don't know about you but I like left brained books about right brained spiritual subjects. They pull it all together in a nice neat package.
I am grateful for the interviews of Dr. Peebles through the Channel, Thomas Jacobson. This Grand Spirit's description of what actually happens when a person Channels from both sides is fasinating and poetic. I really enjoyed the book.
    Nourishes the Soul!
Haven't read this one yet. I thought I was reviewing a different bk. by L. Pendleton; and don't know how to remove this totally.

I grew up in the Bible Belt of Mississippi, and the Christian beliefs were instilled in me from the very beginning. But my astrophysics education and career in aerospace made me begin to question just who God really is. Ancient fossil finds and the growing beliefs in evolution convinced me that the Bibles stories of creation cannot be taken literally.
    Members Reviews:
    Fascinating!
A fascinating read! Walter Parks make a brilliant argument for a scientific God of creation unlike any other I have ever heard in, God is Dark Energy.
Parks background as an astrophysicist is evident. He explains the Big Bang theory in a way that is both detailed, yet simple for a layperson to understand. I like how he touched on the great scientists throughout history, explaining how each contributed to our knowledge of the Big Bang.
Parks does not challenge modern day religion, or try to persuade anyone to go against their religious beliefs. He simply explains his own theory of how the universe was created. He lays out the scientific facts, explaining the Bible as a wonderful addition and reference to science but that it is not meant to be taken literally.
I could not put this book down. Im looking forward to reading the other 32+ books Parks has written.

    Publisher's Summary:
Rob Bell's bestseller Love Wins tackled subjects church leaders have been afraid to touch. Now he asks the biggest question faced by any Christian: How do we know God?
Although 2000 years of Christendom has seen huge changes in our broader understanding of our place in the world, belief remains rooted in archaism and tradition. Rob Bell believes we need to drop our primitive, tribal views of God and instead embrace the God who wants us to reach the potential within us; people who understand their universe of quarks and quantum string dynamics, but who recognise our fundamental need for stories of heroes and sacrifice and profound longing for a guiding force larger than ourselves.
What We Talk About When We Talk About God will reveal that God is not in need of repair to catch him up with today's world, so much as we need to discover the God who goes before us and beckons us forward. A book full of mystery, controversy, and reverence, What We Talk About When We Talk About God promises not to disappoint.

    Publisher's Summary:
In the course of caring for the ill or dying, health care professionals are sometimes the only ones available to provide spiritual comfort to their patients. In our modern pluralistic society, where patients could come from any number of religious traditions, it can often be difficult to find exactly the right words in these situations.
Prayers and Rituals at a Time of Illness and Dying: The Practices of Five World Religions by experienced physician and theologian Pat Fosarelli offers clear instructions for health care professionals on how to better understand the needs of their Buddhist, Hindu, Muslim, Christian, and Jewish patients during these difficult times. Devoting separate chapters to each tradition, Fosarelli briefly outlines the basic beliefs and then looks at the main tenets of each religion, exploring the varied approaches that they take to illness and end-of-life issues. For each tradition, she also describes practices and offers suitable prayers. Each chapter suggests modifications that may be necessary for Western hospitals, modifications for children, and specific suggestions about what not to do or say in respect to different faith traditions.
This resource will be referenced again and again by physicians, paramedics, hospital and military chaplains, pastoral counselors, hospice providers, and other medical professionals.
The book is published by Templeton Press.
