Publisher's Summary:
Our leadership development programs teach necessary skills, yet we often train individuals who do not have the character to lead, which is a weakness because a leader with skills but no character can be dangerous. But a leader with character but no skills is useless. In this book, author, consultant, and entrepreneur Tim Clark shows how anyone can develop both character and competence.
Clark lays out his model of the "core" (character) and the "crust" (competence) to explain how we can rethink leadership. Most importantly, this model makes no allowance for job title, formal authority, or position. Almost anyone with the right character can learn competence, but Clark makes clear that the formula rarely works the other way around. For each aspect of leadership, he shares a series of mini lessons taken from his research and experience. Clark's book will be a key personal growth tool for anyone anywhere ready to step up, regardless of external labels or job description.
Members Reviews:
Some books we should read - some we should digest.
As you can see from the pictures I have included this book got the juices flowing. There is not a page in the book without notes.
I am a software architect by choice, and an enterprise architect by title. I like patterns and authors that can communicate them clearly so they can become a common language with my team and the IT community in general.
Patterns are not new knowledge. They are something that has repeatedly succeeded and are worth recording to teach others and create a common language.
That is the way I see this book. There is no new knowledge in it. The knowledge has just been assembled and explained in a way that helps the reader turn the knowledge into wisdom.
This book is clear, clean, and very well laid out. It is one of the best books I have read in years. It takes the core of leadership and presents it in the clearest way possible.
If you are interested in true leadership, start hear. No matter what path you take in your quest to become a 'real' leader, if that is what you want, you will end up needing to know everything in this book.
You can go out are read 100 other books, attend seminar after seminar, and fall on your face 1000 times, before you arrive here, or you can just start here.
" and I am pretty amazed. This book is a masterpiece
Can I write an unbiased, accurate review of my own son's book? It's an honor to try. I just completed reading, "Leading with Character and Competence," and I am pretty amazed. This book is a masterpiece. It is the best book on leadership I have read. It is an exciting read, and a must-read for anyone who is or desires to be a leader. Every page is packed with powerful insight into those two cardinal principles which all great leaders master. It is a reflection of who Tim is as a person, his excellent education and his many years training leaders in America and globally.

Truly Inspired!
A masterful blueprint for effective leadership, based on proven principles. I purchased this to help me as a business leader, but quickly observed that the principles taught apply across all facets of life. After listening to the audio book, I bought two copies of the hardback version--one for me to read and one as a gift for my boss.
