Publisher's Summary:
Over the past few decades, there's been an exponential rise in the number of books and studies on leadership and what we need to do to ensure organizational success in today's increasingly complex and interconnected global market. And yet, year after year, we continue to see research that shows employee engagement and morale levels plateauing on the low end of the scale. Why is this? Why are we unable to move the needle and create the kind of working conditions that not only allow our employees to succeed, but thrive under our leadership?
What these findings reveal is that leaders often can't see the gap that exists between what they want their leadership to represent and how others actually experience their leadership. Many of us are experiencing a common perceptual problem where our brain sends us false signals assuring us that everything is okay when it is not. We call this phenomenon Leadership Vertigo.
Leadership Vertigo: Why Even the Best Leaders Go Off Course and How They Can Get Back On Track will help you to understand how you can counter these bouts of self-deception by employing four Leadership Landmarks - Community, Competence, Credibility, and Compassion - to get your team back on course.
Members Reviews:
A Must Read For All Leaders and Team Members
Max Brown and Tanveer Naseer have written a concise, must read, about how to prevent your leadership and team(s) from jumping off the rails. As a 25-year veteran of building teams that produced world class results, this book hits all the key points, at a high level, to ensure excellence in leadership and guidance for team members. In truth, in powerful teams, each person has an area they lead for the team. Max and Tanveer hit the nail on the head in this very readable, and enjoyable book of wisdom.
I believe every team member is a leader of something that makes the team click. I also believe that all leaders, new and experienced, should read a lot. My recommendation would be that all of your team members, leaders, and yourself read this book. It will be worth the investment to prevent Leadership Vertigo. Also, this should be a part of every new leaders Onboarding reading.
Thank you Max Brown and Tanveer Naseer for writing this book.
Inspiring leadership reminder
This book is designed to provide leaders with a set of habits to help address differences "between your perception of how you lead and the perceptions of those you lead." If you consistently apply the following 4 interdependent habits, you will break out of complacency in good times and out of myopia in hard times to become engaged in the present while striving for a thriving future:
1. Build community
- "Help employees feel a sense of purpose in what they do, as well as feel like valued members of an organization" by providing a common goal, recognition (ex: hand written thank you notes ties to strategic goals), and respect (ex: avoiding special perks)
2. Develop competence
- Cultivate emotional intelligence
- Recognize that your mood is contagious
3. Earn credibility
- Be physically present, honest, authentic (via willingness to share imperfections and vulnerabilities), and self-aware
4. Cultivate compassion
- Listen and lead with curiosity
What I liked about the book:
a. Good introduction to a subset of leadership principles for new leaders; inspiring reminder for established leaders
b.
