This book is for everyone.

"This book is for everyone." That's not my line, but the first line of a book on poetry, of all things, by the British poet, Glyn Maxwell. Let me explain: I'm an educator, meaning I'm currently a visiting scholar at UC Berkeley, but also in the near past, an elementary teacher in Alamo, California; an author myself, of many books; and one of the major writers of all content for two Silicon-type educational publishing houses: Leap Frog and Smarty Ants. This said, again, this book is for everyone because it brings collaboration into focus like no other book I've read. It's the type of book that says to you: Read this, do this (that is, do the exercises I suggest you do in order get your head into what I'm explaining to you) , get the results, and, finally, just remember that if you do this, you won't need me any longer. Translation: If you've done as Thea Spitzer suggests throughout this book, that is, reflect on your own company's collaborative practices, you are in a position to change your company's outlook, growth, and promise. "The Power of Collaboration" is a true tour de force, an impressive performance. Perhaps because Singer-Spitzer is writing this after years of experience, which probably makes all the difference, we get broad strokes (foundational principles) and nuisance (selfish vs. self-interested). Read the book to learn how Silicon Valley does what they do, succeeds as they do, and then take what you learn home, which you can do given the final chapter! It's truly an amazing text; I'm excited to share my response, as you certainly can tell.

GREAT book, really hits the sweet spot on this topic

I bought the paperback version of the book because I manage projects for large organizations and feel that there are efficiencies to be gained if our teams do a better job at collaboration. Frankly, though, I had low expectations, because most books like this are either vacuous or too academic. I was very pleased to find this book had a good balance of theory and practical exercises that I believe will be useful for us.

The author does a phenomenal job identifying the core values of leadership. He illustrates, with his own personal experiences, how to apply these values to everyday scenarios in leadership. The author's vulnerability and authenticity lends itself tremendously to the reader's personal reflection and growth. Although short in length, Every Horse Will Drink is jam-packed with an incredible amount of information for both the new and seasoned leader. If you're looking for a fresh, new approach to leadership, you've definitely found the right book! Five stars!

I recommend it

I liked the book because it showed real examples of how the ideas of leadership worked in the world. I liked how management and leadership were defined. I liked that today you, as a leader, need to be more connected emotionally. I liked how as a leader you still need to be part of the team and not separate.

Great piece of leadership art

This is a must have leadership book. The riveting story of the suicide situation and conditions in combat were vividly illustrated in your writing. Great piece of leadership art!!

This isn't a book you read one time and put away. It's a book to read numerous times to give you time to digest and implement the content. The author not only tells his brutal story of crashing and burning--he also shares the process and the ways he not only recovered but also began to thrive --the lessons learned and how he applied them. The section on being proactive versus reactive is just one of the many topics covered that make this book one I highly recommend. But wait, there's more--really! The book has an incredible number of online resources created by the author that make this book a workbook to come back to time and time again. I coach strong sales performers and this book addresses many things that even the best of performers often struggle with and one I will be recommending often--and re-reading myself.

Honest and Real

Gene had me at Chapter 1 - The Pursuit of Significance. We can work hard and achieve great things, but if it's not significant to us or someone else, does it really matter? The stories and observations in this book really spoke to me. I have taken chances and started over and every time I was willing to accept the risk it was for something that mattered. Practical and Inspiring

At one point, the author of this book quotes Antoine de Saint-Exupery: "If you want to build a ship, don't drum up people to together to collect wood... but rather teach them to long for the endless immensity of the sea." This book is built around the idea of getting the mindset right and then taking practical action.

It's a very practical book, with step by step strategies for identifying and refining goals, aligning them with market potential, developing a compelling value proposition, connecting with customers, and much more. But the foundation of the strategies is excellence and giving, so there's definitely an inspirational component as well.

This is a very accessible book, with clear explanations and real-world examples (but not page after page of stories -- I'm over that, and you might be, too). Each chapter has a summary that clearly outlines the main point of the chapter, and charts and diagrams to help clarify concepts.

There are other books that make similar points, but the completeness of this one, and the underpinnings of purpose and value, make it a great choice for reading all the way through, and for keeping on your shelf for future references.

Usable Guide

Part pep talk and part business manual, this book is well written and smartly organized. It is a book you can work along with. the steps are small and doable. Although much of the content is familiar, it is presented in an engaging, motivational way. It is chock full of tips and techniques and contains charts and diagrams. the author advocates not just fast growth but fast growth with meaning and purpose. This is a usable guide that helps you bring your business dreams into reality.
