Classic children's book

Humorous Canadian classic inspired by author's son.

Great book

I read this as a kid, and just read it again to my 5YO. He wasn't sure about it at first, but he really wanted to know what would happen next. Its wonderfully written and paced; a great book for kids (and adults).

A delightful book

Jacob Two Two Meets the Hooded Fang is as much fun for adults to read as it is for children. It's a great story to read aloud in different voices. Jacob Two Two has a very bad day and runs to the park and has a very vivid dream about the Hooded Fang, a professional wrestler, and a variety of other characters but in the end he is rescued by his older brother and sister.

Some children will have to be read to and parents should read the book before exposing children who are easily frightened to it.

Such an imaginative story

I first got this book in a book fair when I was in second grade. I loved it and read it over and over again. My copy was lost over the past 30 years, but I found this one to share with my son. He loved it just a much as I did. Funny, irreverent and wildly imaginative, this book is great for any child looking for a fun, well-written story well outside the normal fair.

I'm A Cool Kid Who Wears Glasses!

Author-Illustrator O'Malley hits hard into an issue that confronts most children--if they are the least bit different... Of course, being different means that you are different from the bully that claims you are, right?

Sometimes a child, in this case Mandy, might not really know that they have turned into a bully. A child might have some basic leadership skills that has resulted in her having friends that seem to automatically follow and accept what she says. Sometimes that is based upon their beauty, or that they wear the right clothes... Once Mandy was deemed a leader, she proclaimed herself the coolest kids in school. The problem was that she immediately started placing herself as the model upon which "cool kids" were accepted to be her friends.

Kayla was somewhat of an activist--if Mandy didn't change, she would counter her actions with her own. She formed a "Cool Kids Club" for everybody that Mandy had declared uncool! Hey, a very cool idea in my opinion! Kayla was also a leader, but that came because she was always nice and tried to help people. And she even tried to help Mandy, but Mandy just wouldn't listen...

But...was it too late... According to her own rules, Mandy was about to become "uncool!"

The illustrations in the book are line drawings, colored, which I thought matched the story line, since Kayla was into art as well. You will meet most of the main characters in pictures throughout the 62-page book. The writing is of particular interest since the author has matched the style of talking to age-appropriate children who will probably be reading the book themselves!

O'Malley has actually slid in a great lesson, while providing a great story that most children will immediately relate to for one thing or another... Mandy quite easily decided what made a child "cool," including height, whether they wore glasses, and other simply silly things that hurt when you're the brunt of being declared uncool! By simply being Kayla, as she was, the story comes full circle with everybody, including me, quite satisfied!

Better check it out and find out who the really cool kids are! Highly recommended...

Timely Subject. Awesome Chapter Book!

Mandy has crowned herself the coolest kid at school and queen of the third grade. In reality, Mandy is a tyrant who rejects anyone who is different. When she finds out she needs glasses to see better, she wonders how sheâll keep her cool kid title.

Cool Kids Wear Glasses is a wonderful book for youngsters who may be just getting into chapter books. The chapters are short, yet packed with just the right amount of engaging elements to keep kids reading.

This book is certainly based on a timely subject. How many children know at least one school bully? I appreciated the way the author had Mandy gradually decide whether or not what sheâs doing is bullying, since she wasnât looking at it from the perspective of the uncool kids until she herself was in the same position. I think most children can relate to this.

Entertaining and insightful

Ruth likes to think of herself as a lone wolf. Her former best friend, Charlotte, abandoned her for a more popular group of friends when they got to middle school. Who needs friends anyway? Her favorite fictional character, the half-human half-elf Taryn Greenbottom, doesnât, does she? Of course, Ruthâs mothers may disagree. While in the library, Ruth finds a riddle tucked away in a book. It promises to lead to more clues. She finds herself faced with a quest not unlike her favorite fantasy heroine. If only she and Charlotte were still friends, they could conquer the puzzle together. Maybe this quest could be the spark to bring them back together. Or perhaps Ruth will need to open herself up to some new friends.

Megan Frazer Blakemore deftly juggles three plotlines in âThe Friendship Riddle.â Thereâs the personal struggle of friendship â growing apart, meeting new people, opening oneself up to trust others. Thereâs the quest with its twists and turns of seeking out clues and solving riddles. Finally, thereâs the middle school spelling bee in which Ruth wants to participate (a cute touch is that the chapter titles are like sample spelling bee words). Each of the plotlines ties in nicely and proceeds at a quick pace.

Ruth is a charming protagonist. In many ways, sheâs something of a stock character. Thatâs not to say she isnât well developed, but she possesses the qualities one has come to expect in such literature. Sheâs witty and precocious, preternaturally intelligent and stoic for her age. But sheâs quite enjoyable and remains relatable. Thereâs also some complexity. Maybe sheâs not just a hapless victim abandoned by her friend. Maybe her controlling personality contributed to the break up. In any event, the novel is told entirely from her perspective, and sheâs a fun companion for the journey. Because sheâs so unusually mature and intelligent, her lack of perception and failure to act in a couple scenarios leads to a feeling that some of the tension is contrived.

Assuming that âThe Friendship Riddleâ is a stand-alone novel, it was surprising that the ending wasnât as tidy as might be expected. While most things are resolved, a few questions remain.

Less mature readers might be troubled or embarrassed by a subplot involving the girlâs locker room and adolescent development or lack thereof.

If You Only Know Mowgli from the Movies or the Jungle Books, You Owe Yourself this Book

That's because the movies mostly either Disneyfied the stories into kids' films or turned Mowgli into yet another Tarzan while the Jungle Books left out the final Mowgli story "In the Rukh", a story of Mowgli as a grown man. Interestingly, though chronologically the last Mowgli story, "In the Rukh" was the earliest written; the later written but chronologically earlier stories tell how Mowgli got to that point. The Mowgli stories in the Jungle Books end with Mowgli driving Mowgli out of the Jungle and back to Man in order to seek out his place in Man's World; "In the Rukh" tells how Mowgli finally found his place, and IMHO is absolutely vital to a true understanding of the character and the stories, since all the rest were written in order to explain how Mowgli ended up "In the Rukh".

The stories are helpfully arranged by internal chronology, except that the first story has two sections set 10 or 11 years apart and the next two stories actually take place between the two parts of the first story. In addition each story has an accompanying poem following it. Thus, I would suggest the following reading order:

I bought 3 different versions of the 3 Little Pigs. I hope the grandkids enjoy these different take of an old tale.

Marshall Is The Best

James Marshall is the best. Sticks to the classic tale - drawings are brilliant and hilarious. My daughter loved him when introduced many many years ago - so bought this copy for members of the next generation. Still elicits the giggles. All his stuff does.

The Three Little Pigs by James Marshall

The rolly polly brothers are drawn in a fun way that adds to the classic story. The wolf is not so evil and they even have a mother pig who is sending them out into the world. I used this book with puppets for a Library class with kindergarteners. They were fully engaged and literally rolling on the floor. Have some fun, read James Marshall's Three Little Pigs.

A Classic that Children Love

My grandchildren love this story. They keep asking me to re-read it to them. The pictures are very good and the story has a different ending from what I remember in the original version.

A Definite Must-Read for All 8 and 9-Year-Old Children.

This book was perfect for my 9-year-old granddaughter, Grace. This engaging story enthralled both of us to the point that we had to read it in one sitting. We loved it when Stefan wished for his room to be cleaned, his homework to be done and a medieval sword. Kaia wished for the white pony and the carnival in her back yard and all that happened after they made those wishes. Then when they decided to take Jinn and her lamp to school and the personal things they wished for and its consequences. This story line is very strong so Gracie and I can hardly wait to read the rest of the chapter books by Merriweather Hope.

Wonderful story and narration

What made the experience of listening to Muse: A Cat's Story the most enjoyable?

Not going to lie...I shed a few tears on this one. Several different reasons, mainly knowing that all three cats were working towards their dream, all different ones, but all perfect for them individually.

Who was your favorite character and why?

They were all my favorite for different reasons. We can all relate to being exhausted from life in general, to feeling attractive to others, to chasing a dream. Even the train cats were favorite characters!

Have you listened to any of Robyn Hursts other performances before? How does this one compare?

This was my first opportunity to listen to one of Ms. Hurst's performances. I was happy to hear the enunciation of each word (hard now days!) and it was great to hear the different voices she had for each of the characters. I smiled when several characters were "talking" and she was able to keep all of them very distinct.

Any additional comments?

This was a great story and wonderful narration. I laughed out loud, smiled, frowned, and teared up at some parts of the story. Definitely well worth listening to!

Smooth storyline, unlike other animal point of view novels I've listened to (or read) in the past.

This is not my first experience listening to Robyn Hurst, nor will it be my last. Her voice is easy to listen to. The character specific voices made the performance entertaining and even more enjoyable.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

Yes, since the story is only 2 hours long, one sitting was all that was needed! Which is perfect so you can let yourself experience the whole story at once.

Captivating, surprising, warming of the heart

Heartwarming, adventurous, colorful

What did you like best about this story?

The warmth and innocence of the main character juxtaposed against others...and the influence that sweetness had on others...
