Would you recommend this book to a friend? Why or why not?

This program seems adequate if you want to learn basic phrases in a new language. The words/phrases are introduced clearly and the pronunciation is broken up into individual syllables so that you can clearly hear how to make each sound. There is a good amount of repetition and enough time in most cases for you to repeat the sounds/words/phrases when prompted.

This was my first experience with an audio-only program, and I suppose it will do exactly what it says... help you learn to speak and understand the language. However I am a very visual learner. I found that after learning to say the words/phrases, I also wanted to see the words that I was saying, and know how they are spelled. The "reference guide" that accompanies this program is simply a 14 page blurb introducing the Pimsleur teaching concept. It contains no "reference material" at all for the units or language that you are studying. If you are a visual learner then this might be frustrating to you.

Has Dutch Phase 1, Unit 01-05 turned you off from other books in this genre?

What aspect of the narrators performance would you have changed?

Not performance per se, but as noted above, some brief glossary with the spellings of the words we have learned would be valuable.

Could you see Dutch Phase 1, Unit 01-05 being made into a movie or a TV series? Who should the stars be?

Rutger Hauer? He can teach me Dutch anytime...

Gold Star BEST Language Course

This course is hands down the best spoken language resource I have ever gotten my earbuds on. I look forward to each day's lesson, it's in digestible chunks, I truly feel comfortable and proficient with the material. This course brings up the old lessons to review just at the perfect time to keep it fresh. I cannot recommend Pimsleur enough.

The only Cons:

1.) These courses will not get you ready for your trip this weekend necessarily, be at least 2 weeks out to get some basics

2.)Obviously this will do you worlds of good with oral skills but does not reference spelling for written

3.)Dutch program only goes to Unit 30! They do not have the later phases! So if you had hopes like me of those, accept that (For now at least) this is only a 6 week maximum course!

Pros:

Absolutely everything else!

Effective Language Learning

Having previously used the Pimsleur Haitian Creole program, I was not surprised to enjoy the Pimsleur Dutch as well.

Can't recommend Pimsleur Highly Enough

I am now on Lesson 63 of Chinese (Unit 3 lesson 3) and I couldn't think of a better way to spend 30 minutes a day. They all follow the same pattern. I will always start here with foreign languages.

Good Language Learning

I really like the Pimsleur language learning products. As a French teacher myself, I know the work it took to master another language and what techniques work to help students build skills. They are absolutely right when they say that it is about functional sentences useful in real situations. It is also about oral skills, not written grammar tests. I like that they also don't just have you repeat a phrase, like a phrasebook or some other language-learning programs - they explain what each part of a phrase means as well, which allows you to adjust the sentence accordingly with other vocabulary. It also helped to hear two different speakers, one male and one female, to make it easier for me to pronounce things correctly. A 30-minute lesson is enough to absorb at one time - you need to really think to keep track and you might need to do it twice, but it isn't too intense.

Note that the free download is just for the first lesson, about 30 minutes. On Audible they have Phase 1 units 1-10 for two credits or split by 1-5 and 6-10 for one credit each. You can also get individual lessons for 1 credit each, but why you would buy lesson 2 for one credit when you can buy 1-5 for one credit, I don't know. Don't expect all 10 lessons for free! But this is a great way to see if you like the way the lessons work and if you want to learn more of this particular language.

You Can Do it Too!

What made the experience of listening to Irish Phase 1, Unit 01-05 the most enjoyable?

At first listen, it sounds like a difficult language, but the narrator breaks up the words until they are possible for anyone to say.

What about the narrators performance did you like?

He was understandable.

If you were to make a film of this book, what would be the tag line be?

Speak like a song.

Very Effective, Too Short

Having studied the Irish language in a number of formats, I can't deny the effectiveness of the Pimsleur method for learning SPEECH. The approach is very logical, and the material is useful for the casual cultural tourist or the beginner. Unfortunately, Pimsleur has only 10 lessons of Irish, enough to get you started, but little enough to leaving you hanging after lesson #10. Come on, Pimsleur... if you can do 30 lessons of Russian, surely you can do as much for Irish.

Pimsleur Method is Preferred

I like this method because I truly believe repetition is the key to learning. Meanings may not stick right away, give it time, but it is amazing how some Irish words and phrases have quicly become a part of my thinking.

What did you love best about Irish Phase 1, Unit 01-05?

The Irish language is not used in the United States and the basis of the language has no apparent roots in the English language. This book, however, makes it very easy to remember basic words and phrases in the language, even if there's no reference to it in your life. Even my 4 year old has begun to pick up some of the words as we listen to it in the car.I really like how it is presented and would feel rather comfortable using it to not make a fool of myself in the appropriate venue.The last time I listened to it was nearly a month ago, but even now, I could give you a couple words and phrases with ease.

If youve listened to books by Pimsleur before, how does this one compare?

Haven't yet, but will certainly look into others.
