very little instruction. probably 90% of the time is filled by inane banter and offensive commentary by the "instructors", particularly Amber. in one lesson of 15+ minutes, they taught 3 conversational phrases. the rest was uninteresting and irrelevant filler

I had high hopes for this audio book. but there is very little actual instruction. weirdly, the course got weaker with each lesson. the first few lessons had good content but as the book went on it was worse and worse. they spend an entire chapter on the written characters. IN AN AUDIO BOOK!!! what a waste of time.

Very Basic Introduction to Thai and Thailand

This is an extremely basic intro to Thai. If you know anything about the Thai language or Thailand, 90% of this will be 'no-duh' info. I still picked up a few new things. Only 10 out of the 25 lessons are really focused on language, and they don't offer quite enough repetition for my liking.

I liked the dynamics of the two narrators, an American man and a Thai woman. They joke, share fun facts about Thailand, and teach some new things. There were some good facts about colloquial Thai that I hadn't heard elsewhere. And since I've never been to Thailand, I learned some things about the culture too.

I can't comment on the written material because I was driving/running the whole time I listened to it and I haven't gotten around to looking at the PDF.

:: This would be a great audiobook if you were going to Thailand for the first time and wanted to get excited for your trip. You'll learn a few words and phrases, but not anything substantial. ::

If you were going to Thailand and wanted to learn some useful sentences and phrases, I highly recommend this company's "Learn Thai - Survival Phrases" part 1 & 2.

Thai in 60 Minutes?

The product is good in that it does teach you Basic Thai Expressions. However, one does not learn Thai in "60 minutes" unless you have un unusual affinity for languages. Yes, you know where to look up the expressions in your little hand book, but certainly not learn everything the tape offers in 60 minutes.

The only thing I learned in 60 minutes was how to count in Thai. I have listened to the first section of the CD many times over and have finally mastered about 3/4 of the first section. Many times 60 minutes. Maybe, because I actually want to learn the words without having to look them up. I have an affinity for memorization and a language that is completely different from English is certainly more difficult to learn, speak and remember.

Yes, you can learn the basic Thai Expressions from this CD but not in 60 minutes. Yes, you can listen to the whole CD in 60 minutes, but I don't think you can remember it all that quickly.

Would I purchase another Berlitz language tape? Yes. No matter the title, I certainly didn't expect to learn the language in 60 minutes. The CD is helpful and when I go to Thailand I will know the words and expressions that I will need. Fortunately, I purchased this CD more than 6 weeks before my departure date.

Northern accent. Easy to follow along and repeat

I can read and write Vietnamese with very few issues and just wanted to brush up on my speaking since I almost never use Vietnamese anymore. It's super low paced. The speakers are very clearly from the north. It would have been nice to have a southern accent as well (I learned to use the southern accent). I finished units 1-30. I did not find level 30 to be very hard at all. I already have a pretty good understanding of the language but it might be hard if you are an absolute beginner. Still even if you skipped right to the end I'm sure you could pronounce anything in level 30 but I don't think you'd understand it. Easy to repeat. It's a tonal language and not being able to see the words might be difficult for absolute beginners. By unit 30 they were not breaking down long phrases in ways that tell you exactly what it meant, just how to pronounce the phrase in chunks. But I guess by level 30 you might have a decent understanding of the language already. I did not start as a beginner so I'm not a good judge of that. I wish there were longer chunks of reading to practice listening skills. You don't hear much besides a few sentences at the beginning of some units.

I served in Vietnam in '68-69 and am planning to return next year with my two adult children to show them Danang, Hoi An, and Saigon(although it's officially Ho Chi Minh City, it's still okay to refer to it as Saigon because the locals use the two names interchangeably). Back in the 60's I was sent to language school for a year to learn Vietnamese with native instructors so for my return trip I wanted to brush up to impress my kids and better enjoy my visit. I promised my daughter that this wasn't going to be a boring(for her) battlefield tour! All the more reason to know some conversational Vietnamese. When I looked around for language training I couldn't find it taught in any college continuing education programs. The Berlitz school was way too expensive. Rosetta Stone also seemed expensive and I read some negative reviews about how effective it was. I'm a huge Audible fan and while searching for books about Vietnam I saw this Pimsleur course offering and quickly went through the thirty lessons which were helpful for listening to natives speak.

Speaker needs to talk a little slower.

What could have made this a 4 or 5-star listening experience for you?

If speaker spoke slower while speaking and not just slow for 1 word at a time it would be a better product. I find it useless the way it is done

Pimsleur quality BUT only one audio file :(

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

DEFINITELY NOT! The Pimsleur system suggests never listening to more than one unit a day. Unfortunately, all 5 units are on the same audio file (rather than being broken up into 5 different files).Having 5 separate files (one per unit) would make much more sense for me as a learner. That way I could copy the unit I want to listen to on to my iPod. Currently I'm unaware of a way to quickly get to the start of the latter units.

I absolutely love Pimsleur as a way to begin learning a new language. However, having just one audio file for units 1-5 is a serious drawback for my preferred method of study.

better than i hoped

i am really impessed with this. i have no prior experience with other languages accept school french which i had no interest in or talent for. i really thought i wouldnt grasp this but acctually its fun and very addictive and after 2 weeks of the recommended half hour per day i feel ready for the next 5 units and already feel i could have a basic disscussion about greetings, language, directions and eating out. would recommend to anyone interested in learning tagalog.

Just what I was after!

I'm a fast learner with experience of some other languages. I found this easy to get into and quite addictive it takes a few listens but its well put together and makes you understand the smaller elements that make up sentences. So rather than just drilling useful phrases into your head this program breaks down sentences into smaller elements so you can fully understand what you are saying, anticipate responses and even piece together your own sentences. Im nearly done with this first phase and I am highly motivated and looking forward to continuing onto the next. Highly Reccomended!

Great method to learn a New Language

Would you consider the audio edition of Romanian Phase 1, Unit 01 to be better than the print version?

Not finding Romanian on Duolingo or in Rossettat stone. I downloaded this audiobook and was pleasantly surprised by how good it was. It is easy to learn with the method they use that focuses more on teaching you by speaking as you hear and by having a conversation. I will definitely get the other units.

Quick and Simple!

I checked out Pimsleur "Quick and Simple" polish from my work library... similar to this, it is an audio based program... Units 1-5 are almost an exact copy of "quick and simple", but the remaining programs take you from there. I take the lessons on my drive to and from the office (lessons are usually ~30 minutes) and best done when alone in the car. The program teaches you phrases which you repeat (often) in the context of a conversation. My Husband is polish, and is amazed that just on lesson 8 I am able to have short conversations regarding country of orgin, language, directions, meals, etc. If speaking polish is your ultimate goal - this is the way! I have struggled with other programs (including rosetta stone), but am excited to complete all 30 of the available Pimsleur lessons. I highly recommend this series.

Great resource for language learning

Highly recommended! Great narrator. Gives clear instructions for learning pronunciation. Very helpful. It is good to listen to instructions in first chapter about how to best profit from the course.

Just coming back to me..

Wish I had my grandma or dad with me to help me with pronunciation better than the audio on this audio book

It's worth the investment.

I also have Rosetta Stone. But with Pimsleur I actually know what I am saying. If you want to start SPEAKING a language within a week or so, then Pimsleur is definitely it. My only con with Pimsleur is that there are no texts. I purchased this via Audible.
