One afternoon over coffee at Cats delicatessen, a friend of Isabels shares a call for help from Duncan Munrowe. Great story, simply gorgeous narration...
Oftentimes the first thing I do when I log onto Audible is check if there is a new story by Alexander McCall Smith. If there is, I always immediately download and by the next two days I have listened to the whole story.
I really love this series because of the delightful characters and the main character's concern on how to live an ethical life with the situations that come up in front of her, rather than a theoretical situation. I think the author, Smith, does this intentionally.
Not to worry if you are not "down" for ethics in good stories! But if you do decide to get this book, I would suggest starting with the first of the series and moving forward.
The narration by Davina Porter is just so gorgeous!
As an aside, it is simply amazing how the author can invent a three-dimensional, new character and bring the reader along to "get it" on the spot.
I hope you do listen to this book and enjoy it.
    watching clouds
Another great story from Alexander McCall Smith. I enjoy Isabel's self dialogue she goes through more ethical problems in her when she should be listening to someone talk. This story has here again a Cat's delicatessen helping out when Cat is sick and staff has a problem. Jami is busy with his music and Charlie is being taught mathematics by Grace which results in a problem with Isabel. Duncan Munrowe asks Isabel to help him recover his stolen painting by French artist Nicolas Poussin. Isabel can find the most unique ways of solving problems. Davina Porter and her slight Scottish accent is Isabel. She is a delight to listen to. Can not wait for the next book.
    Another Isabel winner!
Did the plot keep you on the edge of your seat? How?
The plots of the Isabel Dalhousie novels are subtle: more about human nature and interactions than action or events. That said, this one held together very well and kept me moving forward as interesting things were revealed and just when I (or Isabel) thought I knew something, it was likely to be revealed that maybe we were off base. Nicely done!
Which character as performed by Davina Porter was your favorite?
Oh, Isabel is always my favorite. I always listen to Porter's performances because her accent gives just the right flavor.

    3.5 Stars Mixed Feelings
This is one of Tami Hoag earliest novels, before she wrote thrillers. I consider it a romantic suspense. It has all the drama of a thriller and passion for a romantic suspense novel. Mary Lee Jennings leaves California to meet her friend Lucy in New Eden, Montana. Little did she know, she discovers her friend's dead, and learn the shocking truth of her secrets, putting herself in danger on living on a ranch life, and falling in love with a stubborn cowboy.
The book was well written but a bit too long. Too much internal thoughts of the characters, same stuff over and over again. How many times does Ms Hoag have to tell me that the character is stubborn/lonely/loyal/a misfit? I get it already! I didn't lose my memory from the prior chapter. Or the one before that, either. I would have rated this book higher if not for the annoying repetition.
Having said that Tami Hoag is one of my favourite authors and she her writing has improved in future books.
Joyce Bean was ok with the delivery of the story. Some of her voices were over dramatic and that was a bit annoying
    Not good
Really mediocre. I am having difficulty deciding if it is the hackneyed writing that turned me off or the overly dramatic narration and unpleasant voice of the romantic male lead. Sounds like a elderly redneck rather than a hot young cowboy. Hard to imagine the female lead would really be turned on by him. Yuck!
    Excellent suspense and plot twists
Who was your favorite character and why?
Marilee. An everyday woman who encountered an unbelievable situation.
Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?
yes because the suspense was well developed and the character, especially the central character Marilee was well developed and you wanted her to "win" - find the answers she was looking for!
    Any additional comments?
    Great characters and plot twists!
    Shallow sexual exploitation
What would have made Dark Paradise better?
If you are looking for a shallow story that becomes boring as the sexual play progresses through the pages, this might be for you.
Has Dark Paradise turned you off from other books in this genre?
I'm not sure what genre Audible assigns to this work.
    Which scene was your favorite?
    ?
What character would you cut from Dark Paradise?
    Most
    Any additional comments?
    ?
    Pretty good
This book was more a dang love story than anthing else. I might have enjoyed it more with out the 'obligatory' sex scenes.

Chet tells it like it is
Long on Chet, ok on mystery. Chet and Bernie mysteries warm the hearts of dog lovers. This one continues in that genre. Enjoyable.
    I love Chet!
Where does A Fistful of Collars rank among all the audiobooks youve listened to so far?
    Ranks in the top 5.
Have you listened to any of Jim Frangiones other performances before? How does this one compare?
Yes, I have listened to all the Chet and Bernie books. He is very easy to listen to and really brings the characters to life. I can 'see' Chet's expressions in my mind.
Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?
Yes! I can't get enough of Chet and Bernie.
    Any additional comments?
I would recommend these books to anyone. I always enjoy the stories and this narrator is awesome. If you are comfortable with 'hearing' a dog's thoughts, these stories are so much fun!
The funniest "dog's view of the world" ever
I am a cat lover not dogs, but this book makes Chet one of my favorite characters. His loyalty to his owner, funny way of "telling the story", good mystery and excellent narration by Jim Frangione are guarantees to put any future books in this series on my wish list.
    Chet the wonder dog
What made the experience of listening to A Fistful of Collars the most enjoyable?
    The narrator is just wonderful.
What did you like best about this story?
The mystery was a good one
    Which scene was your favorite?
Chet at the movie scene chasing the cat.
    Still cute
    Any additional comments?
This series remains cute and funny, even in the face of some of Chet's limited and almost over-used catch phrases. Just when I think it's going to be too much I find myself chuckling. I'm a soft touch when it comes to Chet, I guess.

    Rape
If the heard this version, I would think he felt his books had been raped. I've read all 3 books earlier in Norwegian, unless til translater has written extra story into that version, the so caled Value Collection has no value at all.
Don't buy this version, buy the real stuff.
    The Tourne Review
Tourne. Get it? Torn? Tourne? Sorry, I'll stop...
Anyway, I'm torn on my review for this. And to be fair, this review is premature, as I haven't finished this specific trilogy collection (I've only just started the first part). But I have read all three physical novels before, and I've listened to two other audio recordings. The first was a series of audiobooks that I came across that had to be from the early 80s (the narration began with "Books on Tape"). That first narration was cold and impersonal, the tone of which more befitting a documentary than a thriller series. The next was Scott Brick's unabridged narration of the original trilogy. I enjoyed that set (Scott Brick is a brilliant narrator), though it still wasn't exactly what I wanted. There were times when the mood seemed too depressing for the given setting. I wanted more action, a faster pace, more enthusiasm in the narrator's tone.
Which brings us to this recording. What is up with the cheesy background music? It is just painful. Seriously. Leave. It. Out. The narrator does okay (at least he has so far), though I'm not fully buying his voice as the voice of the characters.

    Book is awesome....Narrator is not.
Would you consider the audio edition of Size 12 and Ready to Rock to be better than the print version?
No, and its a shame, because the other audio books in the series were great, and got me invested into the series.
What did you like best about this story?
As usual Heather's interactions with the other characters in Fischer Hall is almost always just as good as the murder mystery.
Who would you have cast as narrator instead of Sandy Rustin?
Kristen Kairos or Justine Eyre. I think it's always better to have a constant voice be the voice of the series, and either Kairos or Eyre would have been best. Sadly, the fact if the matter is that Ms. Rustin didn't really seem to try, her interpretation of Gavin and the others was really just bad. Her narration of the story cost Meg Cabot a star.
Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?
When Tanya Trace described her first marriage.
    Any additional comments?
This book managed to make Tanya Trace likable which was quite the feat when you consider that she was like a constant villain for the other three books. Overall, it was a awesome book, only slowed down by a bad narrator, who doesn't show any excitement for the book.
    Another good one!
Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?
I have listened to other books in this series and really enjoyed them. I wasn't sure about this one with a different narrator than before but was pleasantly surprised. Sandy did a great job with all the characters. I look forward to hearing her again.
    Enjoyable!
I've listened to the three previous Heather Wells mysteries and really enjoyed them. I was excited to hear there was another and immediately downloaded it. I was not disappointed.

    I adore this whole series.
Where does Murder on a Girl's Night Out rank among all the audiobooks youve listened to so far?
God bless the talent of Anne George and Ruth Ann Phimister. This series is the reason I joined Audible. I have literally listened to 100's and 100's of audio books and I revisit this series regularly. The characters are so good I wish I could blink them into existence. So sorry Mrs. George left this world way too early.
What was one of the most memorable moments of Murder on a Girl's Night Out?
One conversation between sisters Patricia Ann and Mary Alice is about Patricia Ann's husband, Fred, describing the gusset in his boxer shorts as the "ball room"! Too funny.
What does Ruth Ann Phimister bring to the story that you wouldnt experience if you just read the book?
Her voice interpretation of the characters is brilliant!! The talent of the narrator makes the books characters leap off the page.
Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?
    Any additional comments?
The books are funny, original, southern and loveable. Through Anne George's mysteries I have learned about genealogy, sea turtles, snake handlers -and- that a great book can be interesting, endearing, funny and all without salty language, explicit sex scenes etc.!! And I am a fan of kick butt, action, hard core detective novels!
Fun chicken soup for the ears
This book was a great break from some of the more serious reading Ive been doing. The pace is relaxing, but not too slow and as soon as you settle into the seemingly mundane life of two older ladies, things change and you are swept into a crazy mystery with two wild women at the helm. Theres one crazy situation after another in this first book, but I wont go into that detail here for fear of ruining the ride for you. Just trust me that things get crazy! I dont know about you, but I absolutely enjoy reading about wild women (or wild men) with good hearts!!
At first glance the two sisters are entirely different and annoying in their own ways. One is a pedantic, persnickety, somewhat judgmental, former English teacher who insists on correcting everyones grammar. The other is a man-chasing, glutton who clearly sees everyone elses faults and has no qualms about telling everyone exactly what they are doing wrong.
There are enough husbands, boyfriends, children, grandchildren, friends and neighbors to bring depth to the story. As you get to know these annoying ladies, you cant help but fall in love with them.

I so wish Anne George was still alive and writing
I have yet to find a writer who captures Anne's style of writing. Humor, realness, intrigue and innocence. We love listening to her books on audio. The narrator is/was the perfect pick for Anne's stories.
    Already read these, now listening
I read this whole series about 10 years ago and loved them! Now I am listening to them on audible books. I think the narrorater is perfect for these books. They are light reading, humorous but with a mystery to each one that keeps you guessing. I recommend them to anyone that likes mysteries and funny characters. I wish PBS would make a series of shows based on these books.
    Keeps getting better
Patricia Anne is the ultimate Southern lady who raised her family in the fifties of Birmingham, Alabama, and now is enjoying her golden years. Her descriptions of that city are are spot on and her manners southern perfect with a soupçon of humor underneath it all. They are enchanting: warts, murders, loving and bickering family, and all.
    Parts were hilarious
A cute cozy mystery with two bantering sisters. Parts were hilarious and not a bad mystery, but it did not necessarily keep my attention. I had a hard time finishing it.
    disoriented by character development
    disappointing follow-up to first book
surprising plot twist at end, but main characters came across as completely different from first book (not simply evolved)
willing to try third of series

Good ole boys - gone bad
I love Ace Atkins portrayal of the good ole boys network in this Mississippi mystery. The community ties are prove that there are good boys in that network, and good people who care about their community - even when they feel powerless, they care. Everybody needs a hero, and they have a reluctant one in Quinn Colson. He's not overwhelmingly brilliant, not pretentious or flamboyant, but Quinn is the kind of flawed person everyone wants to befriend. I hope to see him again one day - soon!
Even better than the first book.
I will be looking for the next installment in this series, this is a good one. This story was exciting and the characters are growing. The narrator did a great job on this book.
    Disappointing.
Would you recommend this book to a friend? Why or why not?
If you want to read a "Yes, Jesus loves me" testimonial then go ahead. Two thirds of the book were quite entertaining but the last part describing the tornado and its aftermath was just much too tedious. I found myself skipping several chapters. And what's up with the Jesus love fest? It was like watching a televangelist on Sunday morning.
Has The Lost Ones turned you off from other books in this genre?
    Yes.
Did the narration match the pace of the story?
The narration was OK although some of the characters sounded exactly the same.
Do you think The Lost Ones needs a follow-up book? Why or why not?

I do not mind certain amount of religious or spiritual twist to a story. I know that it is important to a lot of people and is a big part of their identity but this was way over the top. Tone it down please Mr. Atkins I enjoy your stories too much for that.

Clement Mansell knows how easy it is to get away with murder. The seriously crazed killer is already back on the Detroit streets - thanks to some nifty courtroom moves by his crafty looker of a lawyer - and he's feeling invincible enough to execute a crooked Motown judge on a whim.
Homicide Detective Raymond Cruz thinks the "Oklahoma Wildman" crossed the line long before this latest outrage, and he's determined to see that the hayseed psycho does not slip through the legal system's loopholes a second time. But that means a good cop is going to have to play somewhat fast and loose with the rules - in order to maneuver Mansell into a wild Midwest showdown that he won't be walking away from.

Is there a perfect audiobook? Find out!
Only Elmore Leonard could have written something this outrageously entertaining. Only Frank Muller could have made it into one of the best things you will ever hear. Leonard is now eighty six. RIP Frank Muller. The book was written in 1980, and Frank recorded it in 1993. So many of Leonard's books and short stories have been made into movies that I can't count them, but I do know that almost none of the stories are better than this. Lt. Raymond Cruz of the Detroit PD is on the hunt for Clement Mansell, a killer who knows no boundaries and kills for fun. Leonard's ear for dialogue is again pitch perfect. The cat and mouse game turns corner after corner, and you feel your heart pounding with each twist at the end. Leonard has you at his mercy. No one else could write like this. There is a dead, crooked Judge, a woman attorney who represents Mansell but then would like to kill him herself. Cruz has fellow cops, there are vengeful Albanians, there is just about anything you could want in a thriller. Stephen King called Leonard "the great American writer." Hard to argue with an expert. Decide for yourself. Just be prepared for a roller coaster ride.
Fight, bleep, or hold the flashlight
This novel was tight as a futtock shroud, smooth as Mai Noi silk, sharp as the turns on Col de Braus, and hard as a boiled egg. I finish reading Elmore Leonard and I want to be him, just for a second. Now look: Chandler, Cain and Hammett are absolutely the Holy Trinity of crime; the Father, Son and Holy Ghosts of Noir. Leonard, however, is both the Word and death's echo. He is the ultimate end, the great inevitable, the voice in the void. His dialogue alone would be scary in its perfection, but you drape that shit on his plot and it is magical.
He sets this novel up from the title. City Primeval' was inspired by both 'High Noon' and Leonard's early Western fixation and Leonard's own work with The Detroit News and writing a piece called "Impressions of a murder" that he wrote for The Detroit News Sunday Magazine. Anyway, there really wasn't anything I didn't love here.
Oh, and Frank M., as always, is just killer at the narration.
    great old fashioned police story
This book has all the elements of a great listen. First of all RIP Frank Muller was never better than his presentation of this novel .. Oh how I miss him.
Then there's the story .. takes place in Detroit at a time when cops needed quarters for pay phones to answer their pagers.
