the narrator. he did a good job keeping in character. I'm ready for another Kearney novel.

A little disjointed.

Not to bad. Some of the other reviews didn't like Patrick Lawlor as a narrator. I didn't find anything wrong with him. He isn't George Guidall but not many narrators are. Everyone Dies isn't McGarrity's best work but it isn't bad. The main antagonist is a real nasty piece of work. I sure hope McGarrity didn't build this character after a real life bad guy. Nice quick read.

great story, so-so narration.

the stories that Michael McGarrity has written that are narrated by George Guidall are much more enjoyable to listen to then this narrator.

Narration not a good fit.

Patrick is normally one of my favprite narrators, but not a good fit for me in this particular book. I have liked all the books in this series with George Guidall, so it wasn't the writing that made me return it after the first ten minutes. However, I can't comment on the story.

Who Knows?!

Narrator appears to yell his way through this book. I found my mind wandering elsewhere, and would turn it off and forget about it, or go to a different book. I have tried to listen to it 4 times because I couldn't remember it. It was like a new book each time. This guy didn't even leave a memory. How sad is that? Well, I bought it, so it means I will have to try for a 5th time a month from now, because it ran on my player without me, so I still can't say whether the story is a good one or not.

Good introduction to author and character

This was my first taste of Alafair Burke and I was not disappointed. The story moves along fast and there area a lot of moving pieces, that all come together. I smiled when Ellie made an inquiring phone call to Detective Dave R down in Louisiana, and again when she named an officer Connelly. The reader was exceptionally good and I'm looking forward to hearing more from him. I did get the sense that the book was "rushed" a little, which wasn't a problem because I was anxious to find out "who dunnit" ... somehow I wanted "more" .. can't say what or why. I highly recommend the book and will get other offerings from the author.

Dead Connection

Christopher Lane did an excellent job narrating the book. This is my first Alafair Burke book. Chose it because her father is James Lee Burke and I have enjoyed his books. The story moved right along and enjoyed the bits about NYC entwined into the story. I am a bit tired of serial killers and would like another topic in a murder mystery. Looking forward to the next book.

Not good for me, but mystery fans might like it.

This is a police procedural. We accompany Ellie (a homicide detective) as she investigates murders by a serial killer. Michael Connolly does the same thing with his character Harry Bosch. But with Bosch I am intrigued and fascinated. I did not feel that way with this book. It was dry, almost plodding. Both authors use twists and surprises, but for some reason Connolly does it better. I dont know how to explain why.

If you look at the plot and what happens in outline form, it sounds good.

Toward the end I was disappointed with Ellies mistakes/stupidity which caused bad things to happen. She is sneaking up on someone but doesnt turn her cell phone off so it rings and gives her away. She knows who the killer is and goes there alone. She enters a dangerous room and doesnt check behind the door.

I was also disappointed with the ending.

GOOD book and good reader

While the underlying premise (conspiracy theory) is a little shaky, the book is great. The main character (Edwin Kreiss) is a real Reacher type; his daughter Lynn is amazing - smart and totally together, and Janet Carter the "good" FBI agent is courageous, ethical, human and likable. While the lead character is a man, there are strong women who are key players, multi-dimensioned and strong. Dick Hill does a really good job at all the different voices.

Pure Entertainment!!

I loved this book! I did not know anything about this author when I started, but WOW!! It was a combination of the best of Clive Cussler and Dan Brown, with a little Tom Clancy thrown in. Looking back, some of the plot is a little unbelievable, but when I was listening, I did not even notice that. Highly recommend.

On par with a great Lee Child book. Loved it!!

I actually wasn't looking for a book like this. I had no idea that the main character would be in the same vein as a Jack Reacher ala Lee Child. I was very, very happy to have found this book to say the least. For a long book, I never felt like it dragged out at any point, and kept the story moving at a good pace.

Edwin Kriess was cut from the same cloth as Jack Reacher, which is all the needs to be said. Nothing more enjoyable then to be in the head with the baddest man in town.

If you are a Jack Reacher fan, then this is the book for you.

Escape the the Wind River Reservation

"The Eagle Catcher" is one in a series of Wind River Reservation mysteries by Margaret Coel. They are reminiscent of the great Tony Hillerman books, with a real respect for and feel of the reservation. Coel's characters are also compelling - you long to follow their story. There's a priest who comes to love this far-flung outpost to which he has been banished, and the Indian lawyer who is conflicted by her roots and her attachment to the priest. Other characters are well-drawn, and the joys and sorrows of life on the reservation make for excellent reading. And listening - the narrator does a fine job.

Unfortunately, Audible doesn't have all the books in this series. Do try one of these; I think you'll like them. "The Eagle Catcher" is a great place to begin the series. Maybe then a whole lot of us appreciative listeners can convince Audible to offer them all!

Joanne Fluke books are all funny and I love all of her characters. Murder that is not messy, and romance that is not trashy.

Light Entertainment

I've enjoyed listening to this mystery solved by Hannah Swenson. Joanne Fluke weaves a tight story.

It is a light, entertaining story peppered with loads of recipes. I've read other books by this author in paperback edition. In those cases I was able to try out the included recipes with little trouble.

What I haven't enjoyed is trying to figure out how to copy a recipe without listening to an entire section of the book again.

Review of Carrot Cake Murder

This is my fourth book. It dragged on a bit but still a good series.

Really, really good

I loved this story, it was both exciting and romantic. I forget sometimes how Joanne has woven Ross throughout these stories even if just for a minute. Mike and Norman need some shaking up, plus Mike just isn't the man for her. I have read this book plus listened to it twice now and still catch things that I missed.

Love the stories. The plots are somewhat complex

Improvement from previous narrator

Would you recommend this book to a friend? Why or why not?

Yes, I liked the story. It was very complex and there was a lot of other smaller stories going on in the background with the main character, which added a certain amount of color to the story.

What other book might you compare Friend of the Devil to and why?

It is in keeping with previous books by this author.

Did Simon Prebble do a good job differentiating all the characters? How?

Simon Prebble was definitely an improvement from the previous narrator, it took a little while to get used to the different take on the characters. I really enjoyed James Langton's narration, but this was definitely manageable. It was a little over produced, the music added at random times was annoying, and I am not sure why they felt they had to use that strange sound effect when Banks read Templeton progress note.

Did Friend of the Devil inspire you to do anything?

Yes, I think I might be able to continue with the series, I stopped when I listened to Ron Keith.

Jarring Music in an Otherwise Good Book.

Good story, but there was that hideous music/noise. Whatever the purpose of the music, it was distracting. What producer & person in charge of music/sound would ever think this was okay? It was jarring. This audiobook was interesting & enjoyable. I really enjoy the D.C. Banks series & think Simon Prebble does such a good job of narration. I don't enjoy listening to a book where the narrator tries to alter their voice based on gender of the character. I hope never to hear those "musical" sounds again.

Ruined by music

What did you love best about Friend of the Devil?

Simon Prebble is at his usual best here. I like the way Robinson runs 2 investigations simultaneously.

What's with the music at odd times? not even between chapters. and it runs over into the first few words of the following section. Definitely a bad idea. I see they do it again in the next installment.

Funny, weird, horrible, terrific

This writer was a wonderful discovery for me. In terms of both the story and the characters, "original" hardly says enough. Warning: there's a mountain of graphic sex, and plenty of truly obscene violence. It's all part of the picture, but it might be too much for some. I found parts of it hard to read, though worth the discomfort. The humor is maybe the best part -- weird but hilarious. I'm torn whether this is a 4 or a 5 only because the writer is still a bit amateurish. He makes grammatical errors and non-compute phrases (like tears coming out of the retina), has some mild plot holes (why would having sex be blackmailable?) and falls in love with some words and overuses them ("frisson," for example). But in tribute to a fabulous story, I'll leave it a 5.

AUDIO:

The reader is a good actor but is wrong for the part. He's the ultimate occidental/Anglo-Saxon. Also, he sounds smug and pompous rather than practical and self-effacing as the protagonist is written. All his statements are lobbed at you like pronouncements. And though he seems to have studied how to pronounce words like Supatra and Chanya, he didn't bother with others, like Nippon, or sake (sacky! ugh! yuck!).

A waste of a credit

This book is not at all as described. Having visited Bangkok, I thought that it would be interesting to have that as a setting for a detective story. Wrong! The book was sordid, gruesome, and totally devoid of listening pleasure. I stopped about 30% through and I don't know why I even wasted 3 hours of my time, much less an Audible credit.

Alluring read with a dispelling ending

I really enjoyed this book and was compelled to continue to (listen) to more and more; effectively a page turner. The mystery was well paced and developed and the setting (Thailand) was very interesting, with cultural references. This murder mystery kept me going and at the end when the threads fell together it was gratifying... that is until the "climactic scene" at the end (I won't spoil) that completely too far and destroys the suspension of disbelief.

Other than that scene, it was a very entertaining ride.

Cultural Mysticism

Very good. Cultural diverse murder mystery. Comical at times this is not a light read.

Mystery and Magic

The book is absorbing, although you have to accept the spirit world as you read it. It is marred by an exceptionally long and boring "Epilogue", devoted to justification of the porn industry.

My first Mankell book

My interest was piqued when I read on the audible just released lists about Swedish author Henning Mankell. I read the publisher's summary and thought they looked interesting. I'd never read a Swedish author before, that I know of anyway, and thought why not give it a try. I've always found the Baltic history intriguing so decided to give Dogs of Riga a try as my first one. I thoroughly enjoyed the story and getting to know Kurt Wallander. It was a fun listen with with plenty of plot twists and turns. Henning writes a good story. I enjoyed hearing the descriptions of life in both Sweden and Latvia. You wonder sometimes what the citizens of both countries think about life there and it appears to have its challenges. I will look forward to listening to the other Mankell books on Audible.

I greatly enjoyed The Dogs of Riga. Having given Dick Hill a negative review for his reading of the first book in the Wallander series, I was pleased that he had settled into a more appropriate style than in Faceless Killers. The story is intriguing with a fast pace and an unusually well handled sense of place. Highly recommended for fans of top-quality mysteries.

The Best of the Wallander Books I Listened to.

This is my second of the first three in the Henning Mankell / Kurt Wallander series. This one is actually the best of the first three by a decent margin.

I went ahead and purchased one of Audible's package deals which included the first three books in this series all at once.

As I said with my first review of "Faceless Killers", while this is definitely an improvement, it's still nothing great. Likewise, the narrator, Dick Hill was good, but he is so "white-bread", he's not the perfect fit here.

Granted, overall, this one is not bad, three Mankell / Wallander books is enough for me.

Creeped out in Latvia

What made the experience of listening to The Dogs of Riga the most enjoyable?

As a dedicated Kurt Walllender fan, I felt I knew what to expect in this book, just another in the excellent series. Wallender introspective, police procedure grindingly glacially, Sweden bleak and foggy. I was not expecting Latvia. Wallender is out of his never-very- comfortable comfort zone and spends much of the story in horror at getting himself embroiled in an illicit trip behind the iron curtain.
