Another Michael Connolly book that is an excellent listen. All Harry Bosch fans will love this book. Very sad in some places and thrilling in others.

The Best Yet

Where does Nine Dragons rank among all the audiobooks youve listened to so far?

Over the past year I've been listening to all the Harry Bosch series - starting with the first one. I've enjoyed them all, but his one has been the best so far in my opinion.

What other book might you compare Nine Dragons to and why?

All the other Bosch series of course, but also similar to the Girl With the Dragon Tattoo trilogy I think. I listened to TGWTDT as audio books and loved them, then went on a search for more audio books but never really found something that grabbed me the way they did. Then I found Michael Connelly's Harry Bosch series and really got into it.

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

I didn't see the twist coming in this one. Usually I can predict the twist but this one caught me off guard.

Any additional comments?

My 13 year old son listened to this one with me while we were driving and he loved it too.

Trilling Story

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

Absolutely - some Harry Bosch stories can be a little slow. This tale was fast paced, loved the changes in scenery and the new characters. If you liked Taken I have a feeling you will like this book.

This is not a normal Harry Bosch title, even if you have tried one of these before & didn't love it - give Connelly another try with this book!

Very disappointing

I found this book to be a typical "ugly American tourist" story - going to a country where they have no idea of the culture and being obnoxious. A real shame as I have enjoyed all the other Bosch books that I have listened to.

This one has really put me off ...

Narration kills it

I was not a huge fan of the narrator, his voice was so 'rough' and 'scratchy' and way he read did not hold my attention even though the story was interesting.

Give the book a 4/5 but the narration 2/5.

Early Parker, like Early Autumn. Very engaging.

Parker was so prolific for so long that it is sometimes hard to tell one book from another. I may have confused my review of Early Autumn with this one. If so, forgive me. At 63. whatever, the memory begins to fade...perhaps some of you are familiar with this phenomenon.

In any case, this is the book in which Spenser and Susan Silverman meet, and it presages a long, passionate affair in which the two never live together, but maintain their love and commitment to each other. The plot involves a kidnapping of a fifteen-year-old boy for $50,000, money his parents have to borrow. The parents have very serious problems. Spenser is drawn into a spider's web of iniquity and evil-doing, the likes of which the title of the book would never even hint at. Everyone is corrupt, and Spenser is like a dog with a bone: he is so determined that he never lets go. Susan helps him as a consultant, but we soon realize that the work she does is parallel: her clinical work involves her solving the nexus of her patients' lives, just as Spenser's work draws him into the dark side of their lives.

Spenser is so funny that you often can't stop giggling long enough to take him seriously.

This book is also pre-Hawk. Spenser is without his wing-man, and has to ride to the rescue with only his resources. Fortunately, these are considerable. The team of Spenser and Susan is a winner, and will survive decades of very satisfying work. Enjoy this. Few writers can approach Parker in talent, humor, plot or character development.

It is the Mother

A child is missing and his parents hire Spenser to find him and we're off on another adventure. In the small town of Smithfield Massachusetts in the mid seventies there are still communes and Spenser enlists the aid of the high school guidance counselor Susan Silverman to help him find it. He doesn't find him there but all fingers point to him being there with his hero a bodybuilder by the name of Vic Harroway. You see Kevin has a dominant mother who is sexually promiscuous (look that one up or ask your parents about that one young people) and a father who works all the time; naturally this creates gender and sexual identification issues for the boy, because psychologically speaking Freud still rules in the 1970's. The book is dated in other ways as well such as fashion, sexuality, and the counterculture. Many of the basics that later became staples for the fans of the Spenser series aren't yet a part of this book. This is both a positive and negative; familiar elements of what later developed into cliches and people who lost their humanity and became icons are absent here.

Excellent

If you have read the two previous books in this series, you know what to expect. Lansdale writes fun characters, and has a great turn of phrase.

Narrator Phil Gigante is fantastic. He makes each characters voice unique, and you can tell he is having a great time with this material. If you haven't read any Hap and Leonard novels before, start at the beginning with 'Savage Season.' If you are returning, then be happy to know that this is another great entry in the series.

Darker, More Violent, No Fun

I loved the first two in the series, but this one is long and redundant. You can see the villain a mile away. By the final quarter, I increased the speed on the narrationI wish I had much earlier. Really hope the next one is better.

What made the experience of listening to The Two-Bear Mambo the most enjoyable?

Sure. There's mystery, plot twists, etc. But the snappy, southern-fried dialogue between protagonists Hap Collins and Leonard Pine as written by Lansdale--and performed by Phil Gigante--are the real reason anyone shoud read the Hap and Leonard series. Great book! Great listen!

Not as good as expected

I loved Vigil and Bestiary but this book just didn't quite live up to his normal fast paced unusual stories. It is still a good book but not what I was expecting given his past efforts and the cover blurb on this book.

I really enjoyed this book

I like how it takes us back and forth from on century to the current day. I love how it really engaged me in the history and just interesting things about the South Pole. I was a great listen for me and I didn't want to stop until the end. Only thing I didn't like is the swear words. Seriously I think all books could do without them!!!

The story is acturally a good one...I don't know if reader is given an exact script...this has so many He said She said and He asked She asked that it becomes so annoying you want to scream......get rid of that format and you have a keeper.......

Milk and Honey - Faye Kellerman

Detective Pete Decker finds a little girl on patrol one night, and in his quest to find out who she is and who she belongs to, uncovers a grisly quadruple murder scene.

This is a tough review to write. The overall mystery involving the little girl and the murders was good, and the only real reason I kept listening. But, and this is a big one for me, Pete Decker is a pig. He's verbally abusive to his fiancee on several occasions, and treats her like she's a little girl. "You only talk to other men if I'm with you" "You can't handle my car, take the Jeep instead, it's easier to drive" and to another detective "Don't talk like that in front of my woman. She's too good to hear that language". It was ridiculous and really hard to read. Well, hear. There were a lot of characters portrayed as really backwoods, and the n-word was sprinkled liberally throughout the story, making me cringe every time I heard it. I understand that people who think and talk like that exist, but not in my world. It's not something I hear a lot.

The way women are treated in general in this book is bothersome. Even Decker's partner, Detective Marge Dunn, is referred to as "little lady" constantly, and told to wait in the car while Decker does the dirty work, or pointedly ignored while "the men are talking". There are several references to "those women's libbers" as well. I'm trying really hard to put this in the context of when it was written, but it was published in 1990. And while I have no doubt this attitude was still present at the time, I don't recall it being quite as blatant as it is here.

(Side thought - The time the book was set was a little confusing to me. It was published in 1990 - is it set there, as well? It seemed to me that it was; there were beepers and pay phones, but also rotary phones at the station.

twisted sister

Phryne's sister is making her presence known ,and the very cool clam and collected Mr Lin Chung ,is playing peace maker between his family and the whoo's ,personally I could have lived with out this ,the slow pace of the elderly Chinese foke was starting to erk me.I never mind the appearance of the lovely Mr Lin but I just found myself wishing the tale would get back to our heroin .Stephine Daniels is never disappointing but having said this if this your first book in the sires your thinking of buying I would start closer to the beginning.

Miss Fisher Triumphs Again

Absolutely love this series and its characters. Greenwood captures your attention with descriptions that make you feel like you are present in each scene. Twists and turns, lust and romance, steadfast friendships are the icing on the cake for each novel in the Miss Fisher series. Enjoy!

Excellent Narration

Stephanie Daniel is excellent! She does multiple voices and accents easily. I'm addicted to the Phryne series - books and TV show. Lots of fun, mystery, and woman power!

I wished I liked it better

What did you like best about The Castlemaine Murders? What did you like least?

I loved the Phryne sections, but the Chinese sections seemed too disjointed and were a distraction. It was like reading two books at once and it didn't work for me. I eventually started fast forwarding through the Lin Chung sections because they became less and less interesting as the book went on.

Would you ever listen to anything by Kerry Greenwood again?

Outstanding

Since I got introduced to L. Block's work in "The burglar who painted like Mondrian" and can't get enough. This is a delightful episode in the series about Bernard Rhodenbarr, an "admitted" burglar and reluctant detective. I found wonderful humor, wit, scorn and a very healthy dose of funny cynicism. The writing is masterful and the wry dialogue is sophisticated. Every sentence is expertly crafted. Richard Ferrone's narration is outstanding.

Despite a modern Hercule Poirot ending (Agatha Christie elements are common in this series), this lighthearted piece that keeps your cerebrum very well nourished and your time very well spent.

One of Block's funniest, most ingenious mysteries.

I enjoy comic mysteries, so I like the Bernie Rhodenbarr series about a burglar with a complicated sense of justice, who usually does more good than harm. This is a complex story about an author, who resembles Thomas Pynchon, whose novel "Nobody's Baby", meant a great deal to Bernie but who guards his privacy at all costs. The denouement is a scene out of Agatha Christie, in which Bernie plays Hercule Poirot, who has gathered the suspects together to coax out the true killer. Meanwhile, Bernie suffers his usual internal torments, engages in the pursuit of sexy women, and of course repeatedly uses his skills as a burglar to obtain information if not wealth.

Richard Ferrone does an excellent job of narration. He even made some female characters come to life.

A laugh riot of a mystery!

NYC, humor, mystery, law-enforcement, burglar, murder

Another fun murder mystery with Bernie Rhodenbarr stuck in the middle. This one is as twisty as the rest, and still manages to have a red herring or two. Carolyn is his best friend and foil as usual, and Det. Ray Kirschman's mangling of names will truly make you spew your caffeine! The rest of the characters really are that as well. This is a reread for me as I wanted to read them in order for once.

Richard Ferrone did a great interpretation once again.

Good voyage in literary references, and OK mystery

The lovable fastidious thief just misses the mark in this book, but the richness in literary references makes it worthwhile. The book ends like an Agatha Christie mystery, with all characters gathered in the same room and our hero pointing out the guilty person. However, unlike Christie, he had an unfair advantage, and the clues were not really there or believable. The "Thief's Guide" series is much more enjoyable.

Not one of Block's best; still worth listening.

I am a great fan of Lawrence Block and especially like this series.
