    Maybe Best in the Series
I have read each of the books in sequence in this series and am very fond of the main characters, Gemma Jones and Duncan Kinkaid. The highly competent detectives' personal lives provide the subplots that enhance the storyline. These are "real" and "normal" people. Each of them and those around them seem to grow and change in each work as their professional and personal relationships and associated dilemmas ring very true. This one is one of the most satisfying reads in the series with a compact plot and believable resolutions. Crombie's emphasis on character and human nature provoke deserved favorable comparisons with P.D. James and Ruth Rendell. I didn't give this five stars because I was confused about the timing of the plot. Erika, Gemma's good friend, was a key character here. If this book was set in real-time (published in 2008), she was a very active senior who was well into her 90s. Jenny Sterlin gives Gemma a wonderful, sensitive voice but it is sometimes hard to differentiate between her male voices, particularly Duncan Kinkaid and his associates. Minor quibbles .... as this truly is one of those series that I hope keeps on going and going...
My favorite Deborah Crombie book so far!
Would you consider the audio edition of Where Memories Lie to be better than the print version?
The narrator brings so much life into the story.
What was one of the most memorable moments of Where Memories Lie?
The climax, when Jemma realized who did it.
What does Jenny Sterlin bring to the story that you wouldnt experience if you just read the book?
Because of her rang, she is able to create different voices which helped me picture the different characters. And I suspect she knows how to pronounce words, since she's English, that I don't, because I'm American.
If you were to make a film of this book, what would the tag line be?
    Evil casts a long shadow.
    Any additional comments?
I'm going to read or listen (or both) all of Deborah Crombie's books.
    I love Crombie's series.
Duncan Kinkaid and Gemma James are terrific characters whose personal story serves as a wonderful backdrop and unifying factor to the various mysteries in the series. I have enjoyed every one of them.
    Excellent Story Telling
I discovered this series about two years ago and have been listening to the audio books in order. I've loved every one of them!
The relationship between Jemma and Duncan began in the first book. It has steadily grown and matured though out the series. It has not been a "fairy tale" romance. Theirs is a relationship between two mature adults with complicated lives. There have been bumps in the road, but the two of them have worked through the difficulties.
They are both police officers, very good ones it seems to me.

Another Fantastic Series by Laurie R. King
I have listened to almost all of the Mary Russel (Sherlock Holmes) books and was looking for other books by Laurie R King to "read" and found these. I am loving the new set of characters and the narration as well! The books are engaging and interesting and have great subjects. I also love that the main characters aren't stupid. The mysteries are deep and interesting and engage the "reader" as an intelligent person. I truly dislike it when the main character of the book has to be stupid in order for the mystery to go unsolved or when the women in the story act like idiots. I like her smart women and men who may just not know a lot about a subject so they bring in other characters who DO to find out what is going on. I, as an intelligent women, love to be treated as such. Laurie R. Kings mysteries are REAL mysteries and truly well written. Thank you, Ms. King!!!
Am excited for the next one!
I've been consuming the Mary Russell books by Laurie King and decided to give this series a try and I"m hooked! Excellent.
SO much talent in one person. Thankful she's a writer.
    good story. good partners.
I like the interaction between Kate and her work partner. the mystery was good, but not gripping. great narration.
    Great second read
Having read all but one Mary Russel novels I need a new mystery. This fit the bill nicely. Great characters and strong plot. Thank you Ms King.
    Narration not good!
Would you try another book from Laurie R. King and/or Alyssa Bresnahan?
I would try another book from Laurie King if there was a different narrator.
Has A Grave Talent turned you off from other books in this genre?
    I don't know! I couldn't get past chapter 2!
What didnt you like about Alyssa Bresnahans performance?
Alyssa Bresnahan has a nice voice and would maybe be great at narrating some other story, but she made every character in this book sound the same, and it was hard to distinguish who was talking. And after a while of listening, I would tune her out, it was all sort of the same monotone, and I couldn't picture any of the characters or scenes based on her read descriptions of anything!
If you could play editor, what scene or scenes would you have cut from A Grave Talent?
I dont know. I didnt get that far.

NYPD Detective Jeremy Fisk hunts an assassin working for a shadowy cartel in this action-charged second installment of Dick Wolf's New York Times best-selling series, a masterful thriller that blends politics, intrigue, and twisting suspense.
A number of bodies are discovered on the United States' border with Mexico, each carved with a bizarre symbol: a hummingbird. Detective Cecilia Garza, dubbed the Ice Queen among her colleagues at the Mexican intelligence agency because she's famous for never showing an ounce of weakness, arrives at the scene and recognizes the image immediately; it is the calling card of a killer called Chuparosa, a man both feared and celebrated for his cunning and brutality. Known to be incorruptible in a seemingly lawless land, Detective Garza has pursued this killer for years, yet knows little about him, except that he's merciless and heading to New York City, along with the rest of the world.
It's United Nations Week in Manhattan and Jeremy Fisk, an integral member of the NYPD's Intelligence Division, an antiterror unit modeled on the CIA, let his grief over a devastating loss keep him from his duty to safeguard the city and the world's most powerful leaders. Complicating matters is the startling news of a mass murder on the beach in nearby Rockaway and the arrival of a beautiful and assertive Mexican detective determined to do things her way.
To have a chance at finding and stopping Chuparosa, these uneasy allies must meld their opposing investigative styles. They soon discover that there's much more to this threat than meets the eye, and Fisk will have to learn the hard way that justice is not always blind.

What did you love best about The Execution?
Keeps you guessing and always thinking
Did the plot keep you on the edge of your seat? How?
Lots of twists and turns no Blah Blah Blah
    Any additional comments?
    Good book!
    Well deserved rating!
Dick Wolf strikes again! Well written to capture and retain the listeners attention! And the narrator breaths life into the excellent storyline!
    could not finish it
Would you ever listen to anything by Dick Wolf again?
    no
    Any additional comments?
This book badly needs an editor, or a better one. The author is obsessed with describing everything around the protagonists to the point of absurdity, interrupting the flow of the story so that it is impossible to follow. He also does this in the form of digressions that make little sense. I will not give away anything if I note that close to the beginning here is a prolonged shootout, but it is interrupted by a completely superfluous memory flashback that is irritating and infuriating. Perhaps reading this one could skip easily, but that is harder to do with an audiobook. I finally became so frustrated with the pedantic descriptions and the interruptions of the narrative that i gave up.
    could be true
Very realistic story. A little to much profanity, but pretty clean. Good look into modern era of the drug cartel plague in Mexico.
    Bad, really bad!
What could have made this a 4 or 5-star listening experience for you?
If this book would have been written like he writes his TV shows.
Would you ever listen to anything by Dick Wolf again?
No. I gave it 2 hours to pull me into the story. Those 2 hours are 2 hours of my life I'll never get back. I love Dick Wolf's TV shows.

It has all the local color, wry humor, and splendid characterizations listeners adore.

But when a mysterious stranger moves into the neighboring village - a rich, unmarried heartbreaker - a rivalry erupts among the local women, and the men of the village start a slow burn. It is amusing until death threats, assault, and murder shatter the tranquil countryside. Now Hamish must investigate the darker side of love and desire.

Perfect story marred by poor narration
What did you like best about Death of a Charming Man? What did you like least?
The characters are delightful. The reading was a tremendous disappointment.
Did the plot keep you on the edge of your seat? How?
    Good plot.
Who would you have cast as narrator instead of Shaun Grindell?
Graeme Malcolm did a splendid job on some of the other books in the series.
Was Death of a Charming Man worth the listening time?
I resorted to the Kindle computer voice, which was less irritating, although the Kindle's American accent is ill-fitting too.

    Enjoyable read!
This was my first Hart book - I wanted a lighter read and this fufilled that need to the tee. The narrator is great! I found myself giggling quite often. It is a mystery and some of it might have been a bit hard to swallow, but then again, it is fiction. I certainly enjoyed it!
    GREAT LISTEN
Will get the other two in this series! Unlike any book I have listened to before. Will recommend it to others.
    Another great book!
The Laundry Hag solves another murder with humor and enough twists and turns to keep you guessing!!!
    I recommend
Good book. Great reading voice love the play on words. Good mystery, but with a smile
    Terrible
Production values were horrid. The writing was close behind.
If I had to turn the volume up for some reason, I would be treated to breaths blowing into microphone (especially the "P's") and the light smacks of lips opening. Lovely

A classic title from M. C. Beaton's New York Times best-selling Hamish Macbeth series.
Believing that someone is trying to murder her, gorgeous Jane Wetherby asks Hamish Macbeth to spend Christmas with her and an exclusive group of friends at her Scottish island health farm. With a cold in his head and no place to go for the holidays, Hamish accepts her invitation. He thinks the lady is a bit daft, but, arriving on the lonely isle of Eileencraig, he feels a prickle of foreboding. The locals are openly threatening; the other guests, especially a terrible snob named Heather Todd, are barely civil. So when Heather meets an untimely end, Hamish knows he doesn't have far to look for the culprit. The only snag in his investigation is that all the guests were in the house when Heather vanished. Now, as mysterious events abound on Eileencraig, Hamish must work through the holiday sniffles to find the killer - or else it will be a very miserable Christmas indeed.

    A Holiday Mystery!
It's the holiday season, and Hamish Macbeth is heading to the Happy Wanderer, a scottish health farm. The owner, Jane Weatherby, is worried that someone is plotting to kill her and invites Hamish for the holidays to investigate. At the Happy Wanderer Hamish discovers an eclectic group of Jane's friends, none of which would seem to want Jane dead. However, when one of the guests is killed instead, Hamish wonders if it was a case of mistaken identity or whether the snobby, mean woman, Heather, was the intended victim.
I really enjoy the Hamish Macbeth mysteries. They have a beautiful English-Scottish flair to them, and Hamish, as the bumbling police officer is simply adorable. Death of a Snob had a nice holiday setting, and even though it's March I was getting into quite the holiday spirit listening to this one.
I found it interesting, that in Death of a Snob, Priscilla gets to meet Hamish's parents. In the previous books there has been a on-off flirtation between Priscilla and Hamish. While there is no relationship between them, I liked that Priscilla got to meet Hamish's family while Hamish was away. Hamish comes from a big family, and the complete opposite of Priscilla's fancy yet small family and I think she definitely looks at Hamish a different way after spending time with the Macbeths.
The mystery in this one was good and for those us that like mysteries involving authors then you will definitely enjoy the author angle here.
Shaun Grindell voices Hamish Macbeth and he does a superb job on the accents. I love all the Scottish and English and even an American accent! I plan to listen to the rest of the books in this series as audiobooks because this one was that enjoyable.

Intriguing Mystery in Small English Town
When I first started listening to The Back Road, I wasn't at all sure I was going to like it. It seemed as though the entire book was going to be a dark tale of abuse. But it wasn't that at all. The sisters, Ellie and Leo, who share the same father, but different mothers, and their different paths growing up is a big part of the story. The small town, where everybody knows their neighbor, (or thinks they do) is very interesting . . . and it kept me totally intrigued as the "skeletons" kept coming out of the closets. The book is a bit long, but after the first hour, I found myself fully engaged and vested in the characters. Some are prickly, some disgusting, some standoffish, some kind, some misunderstood, and some I wanted to wrap my arms around and hug. This is a well written, well thought out book, and I never would have guessed the ending. Well worth the wait!
Tom Douglas is almost a peripheral character
This book was okay, but I felt there was an awful lot of it that read like a soap opera, where if only the characters would talk to each other, all of the misunderstandings would be cleared up.
This kind of plotting annoys me the most when it is used excessively, and I thought that was the case here. Tom Douglas, who has left the police force and moved to Cheshire in this second series entry, is really not involved much in this one until the last few hours. I enjoyed the part that he was in, however.
I kept waiting for something to happen here, and when I get to the point that I am not involved in the story enough that this feeling of waiting becomes a conscious thought, the writer has pretty much lost me.
Narrator did a creditable job with what she had to work with.
This is the last time I read a Rachel Abbott book.
Her books are too drawn out. Far too many names to remember. I listened to the audio book version and sat there most of the time thinking "who was that character and what scene was she in?" this is my 3rd book of Rachel's that I've listened to and although the book description is thriller mystery...the plot and storyline is subpar and lacking. Good luck to her maybe in the far future I'll give her another go.
    Excellent suspense mystery story
The Back Road is better than my rating indicates. After listening to Only the Innocent , the first book in the DCI Tom Douglas series, I expected something different. My first issue with this novel is that protagonist DCI Tom Douglas is an incidental minor character.

Boasting a cast of narrators including Golden Earphones recipient Gabrielle de Cuir and Golden Voice awardee Stefan Rudnicki, this unique audiobook features each narrator taking on a different character and performing chapters from their point of view. Listeners will be electrified by their performance of this story where a mysterious little boy who begins appearing in an artist's paintings, even though the artist has never actually seen him; a partially-blind agoraphobic is expelled from his apartment by a strange entity; a widower begins to have nightmares that his long-missing son is still alive and in danger; and a young runaway realizes his companion is actually a malevolent presence. Members Reviews:
    Great narration, weak story
Would you listen to Drawn again? Why?
No, although the narration was compelling, the story itself was not worth another listen.
How would you have changed the story to make it more enjoyable?
I love supernatural thrillers, but the mechanism that tied this one together was very far off, and didn't make any sense. Suspension of disbelief only goes so far.
What about the narratorss performance did you like?
With maybe one exception, all of the narrators are top notch, embodied their individual characters well, and kept me listening.
    So Worth a Credit!!!
I was not expecting to like this novel nearly as much as I did. As I have admitted before, I am an extremely picky reader and have to be engaged from the first page of a book until the last. "Drawn" kept me interested and creeped out from the beginning until the end. This paranormal listen has an original storyline that weaves in and out of four people's lives, and neatly comes together at the end. It reminds me of Koontz and King's earlier novels. The narration was outstanding with the one exception. The female character's narration had a voice that was a cross between whining and sexual frustration or something, ... I don't know what the hell was going on there. The other performances, fortunately, made up for it. Overall this book is definately worth a credit, and worth your time.
    DRAWN FOUR HAUNTED
This was a great listen. Different for a change. I enjoyed the different narrators for each character. It helps keep track of who's who as the story unfolds. Each character is a stranger to the other with their own issue's and yet they all have one thing in common, a haunting.

    Publisher's Summary:
In this Richard Jury adventure, Martha Grimes takes listeners to Ashdown Dean, a little English village where animals are dying in a series of seemingly innocuous accidents. While the puzzling deaths of village pets may raise some idle gossip over a pint or two at the Deer Leap, the village pub, this hardly seems a case for Superintendent Jury of Scotland yard. Nor does it seem much of a challenge for the combined deductive powers of Jury and Melrose, the affable former Earl of Caverness.
It is his mystery writing-writing, amethyst-eyed friend, Polly Praed, who drags Plant and Jury to Ashdown Dean. The impatient Polly, having yanked open a call box in the pouring rain, is ill prepared for what lands at her feet. The now-deadly case is cause for calling in Scotland Yard.
    Members Reviews:
Grimes sets a more serious tone--good listen
I am enjoying listening to the books of Martha Grimes which I read in paper form many years ago. With this book, she has shifted her tone a bit--there is less emphasis on the silliness of some of the characters (though that is there a bit) as she has crafted this mystery around a more serious social/ethical concern--animal abuse.
I think Grimes appropriately down-played the amusing characters (such as Aunt Agatha, Melose Plant's impossibly pompous and irritating relative) so as not to detract from what I presume was her intent to blend the usual good mystery with attention to animal needs and rights.
This book begins with pets mysteriously disappearing and dying, and one of the main characters is a young girl who has dedicated herself to trying to rescue abandoned or injured animals. Against this background, murder occurs in the oddest way--and is discovered by Polly Praed, who calls in Melrose Plant and their friend from Scotland Yard, Richard Jury... and the detecting process begins.
Does this mixture of a mystery for reading enjoyment mix well with commentary on a serious ethical concern? Well, yes and no. Yes, because she has worked the plot around it sufficiently well to have an interesting story, but maybe not totally because (as much as I genuinely believe in and support her message) it felt a little forced. I would have preferred her point to have been a bit more subtle. I hate to make any criticism of Martha Grimes--I so enjoy all she has written, so please don't let that keep you from reading this book. I would say that if her emphasis on the plight of animals was a little heavy-handed, her heart was in the right place. The message is important. The book is good and I quite recommend it.
    a good read
I really enjoyed this book. I look forward to the next book in this series.
    Endings
Again I feel I've been cheated out of things I want to know. Perhaps that why I keep coming back for more.

    Publisher's Summary:
When Kathleen Turner, office runner for the prestigious Indianapolis law firm of Kirk & Trent, started dating the boss she knew the risks. Senior Partner Blane Kirk is known for being a notorious player - the Baskin Robbins of dating with a different flavor every month. Kathleen is the happiest shes been in a long time, but shes always known there was a termination date on her relationship with Blane. She just didnt expect that termination to be her funeral. Blanes current case is drawing heated debate and stirring the pot of public fury. A former Navy SEAL stands accused of the wrongful death of an American citizen during a military operation overseas. The case has far-reaching political and military implications. Someone with a lot of money, and even more clout, wants Blane to lose. As dead bodies of people connected to the defense start piling up, it becomes painfully obvious that disappearing witnesses and altered testimony are no longer enough for whoever is intent on guaranteeing the SEAL gets convicted. Kathleen and Kade, Blanes brother and ex-FBI-agent-turned-assassin-for-hire, are on the trail of the killer. Unfortunately for Kathleen, hes already moved for the end-game - by painting a target on herand pulling the trigger.

Disappointed - but not in THIS book
First 2 books are great. However, after buying the third book in this series I found out there are TWO more books! One of the reviews on the 5th and last in the series gave away the brother selected... don't like the ending. Series would have been great in three. Five drags it out toooooo long.
    Unsympathetic Heroine
Subtract Kathleen from the story and its good. I dont understand why writers feel a woman has to be rude and not accept help in order to be strong.
Being strong is being able to accept help. Kat is so inadequate she blames others for her own issues. I havent been able to figure out what is so wonderful about her that 2 grown men are so ga-ya over her. Ugh
    Very good, mostly
I love this book and have read it 3 times. This was my first time for the audio book. For the most part it was 5 stars, but the male parts not so much. However, I really love the story, narration, and female voiced parts.
    awesome story series
characters come to life. wish they'd do a movie on this series. highly recommend it.
    A True TSTL Heroine
I really wanted to give this a higher rating. I like the story concept. I like the authors writing. The heroine as many great traits. But the author resorts to people just being stupid to increase tension and suspense.
To avoid spoilers, I give the following example:
If you know somebody is trying to kill you, do not walk the dog alone at 5:30 in the morning.
I will buy the next book in the series, but if it is not better, I will stop there.
