A gritty, whip-smart thriller from acclaimed author Harry Hunsicker.
For once, things are going well for former DEA contractor Jon Cantrell. He's got a real job as a fix-it man for a law firm that specializes in handling government contracts. But when his ex-girlfriend Piper asks him to meet with a high-ranking police official and Cantrell is forced to take an off-the-books assignment to find a missing boy, everything starts to unravel.
Not helping the situation is his client, Deputy Chief Raul Delgado, an up-and-coming politico carrying his own tragic burdens he doesn't like to dwell on. Forty years earlier, a racist cop brutally killed Delgado's brother. Now, in a weird twist of fate, Delgado works for the very department that altered his life.
As Cantrell proceeds, he uncovers a puzzling link between Delgado, the missing boy, and a series of vigilante murders. As the link becomes clearer, Cantrell struggles to stay alive and find the missing child.

a great read, enjoyable, great characters
well written, great characters again, can't wait read more, excellent audio performance,
a good follow up to the first book,
Good Follow Up to The Contractors
I would guess that the negative reviews for this book come mostly from those who haven't read or listened to The Contractors, the first book in this series.
An understanding of John and Piper's relationship is pretty foundational to the story. This book carries forward the theme of two people with damaged pasts trying to get along.
The story was good. I listened to this book, and I have to say Luke Daniels is a master at reading these stories. No confusion about who is speaking. He is a treasure.

Good Read would recommend looking forward to Reading More By this author the narrator did a good job

    Publisher's Summary:
In the tradition of Elizabeth George, Louise Penny, and P. D. James, New York Times best-selling author Deborah Crombie delivers a powerful tale of intrigue, betrayal, and lies that will plunge married London detectives Duncan Kincaid and Gemma James into the unspeakable darkness that lies at the heart of murder.
Recently transferred to the London borough of Camden from Scotland Yard headquarters, Superintendent Duncan Kincaid and his new murder investigation team are called to a deadly bombing at historic St. Pancras Station. By fortunate coincidence, Melody Talbot, Gemma's trusted colleague, witnesses the explosion. The victim was taking part in an organized protest, yet the other group members swear the young man only meant to set off a smoke bomb. As Kincaid begins to gather the facts, he finds every piece of the puzzle yields an unexpected pattern, including the disappearance of a mysterious bystander.
The bombing isn't the only mystery troubling Kincaid. He's still questioning the reasons behind his transfer, and when his former boss - who's been avoiding him - is attacked, those suspicions deepen. With the help of his former sergeant, Doug Cullen, Melody Talbot, and Gemma, Kincaid begins to untangle the truth. But what he discovers will leave him questioning his belief in the job that has shaped his life and his values - and remind him just how vulnerable his precious family is.

    I confess; I'm a huge fan!
I have loved every one of Deborah Crombie's books since I read the first few in print some years ago. While I certainly have favorites, none have disappointed. But this latest, happily anticipated and awaited continuation of the story of Duncan and Gemma has satisfied in every way, way beyond expectations. The characters continue to develop in interesting ways, and this particular story segment is timely and well crafted. I find myself so enjoying the story that I want to hurry along, and at the same time I want to go slowly, holding off on completing the story and savoring every part. Sweet dilemma.
    Gold Standard
What did you love best about To Dwell in Darkness?
Deborah Crombie once again embroiders a touching yet suspenseful story.
Who was your favorite character and why?
Melody. She has her own interesting set of issues and seems to have been most deeply changed by the events of this story. I'm wondering how she'll fare.
What does Gerard Doyle bring to the story that you wouldnt experience if you just read the book?
The English spirit infused in the story. I'd be reading it with an American point of view and might miss things which he emphasizes.
Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?
Neither. It's not that kind of book. It's sit on the edge of your seat king of book.
    Any additional comments?
    Can't wait for next one.
    great story telling
I'm thinking of the stories more as installments rather than stand alone novels. a story is told amidst the main characters.
    Excellent!
I discovered Deborah Crombie a couple years ago. She has become my favorite writer. I love her characters. I love the way she describes locations in a way that makes me feel I've been there. I love her intricate and surprising plots.
The mystery starts early in this book and keeps on until the end. I made the mistake of listening to it at bed time one night.

    Bitter Intent
Would you listen to Bitter Harvest again? Why?
I have listened to the book a second time because any book reveals things missed on the first listen.
Would you be willing to try another book from Sheila Connolly? Why or why not?
I so far like all of Sheila Connolly's books even though some of the characters are very unlikeable or side plot lines are sometimes downright unbelievable. Nonetheless the basic story of the books are interesting, and mostly a fun listen and can hold my attention.
Have you listened to any of Robin Miless other performances before? How does this one compare?
Robin Miles is consistent throughout the series. Always a reliable listen where each person is identifiable from book to book. Her inflections are great giving a real boost to the story every time.
If you were to make a film of this book, what would the tag line be?
Bitter Intent is not a book that would make a great movie as much depends on knowing the background history of the characters and plots. It's just not that interesting to be a movie.
    Any additional comments?
Even though I did enjoy the book I found it a stretch to have someone harassing Meg that had no part in a past book in the series. It just was not believable but the story itself is interesting enough to give it 3 stars.
    Slow
This book was slow and didn't really keep my attention. Didn't keep me guessing on who was behind it.
    Love Sheila Connolly's writing!
What made the experience of listening to Bitter Harvest the most enjoyable?
All of the books in this series are linked. The story develops with each new book, I know there are more in the series than are available on Audible, I hope this gets corrected soon.
What about Robin Miless performance did you like?
Very well read and played as always.
    Good who did it.
Very good keep you guessing to the end of who was doing the the scarring to meg. Will get next book
    Love this series!
Great addition to this series! I'm totally hooked. I liked that this not really a murder mystery. Very interesting mystery!

    Members Reviews:
    I Like Nell
The main character of this series is Nell Pratt. She is president of a museum in Philadelphia. She is a career woman, probably in her 30;s or 40's. She's smart and logical. These stories are not action packed. Certain parts of the plot are predictable. But I find I enjoy reading about Nell's life. If I met someone like Nell, I'd want to be friends with her.
There is the beginning of a romantic relationship in this book. It is a part of the story, but not the main theme of the story.
There are more books in this series. If they don't become available at Audio, I will read the books.
There is no graphic violence or sex.
    A Good Mystery
It is a little obvious, but sometimes I like obvious, then I don't have to think so much! It has a good ending as well!
    Pretty good
Unlike most lead characters in cozy mysteries, Meg does not invite herself into murder investigations. She is intelligent and likable and is trying to do her job when someone pulls her into their situation. That makes her different. The investigation that follows is interesting. This isn't a fast paced page turner but it is an enjoyable book.

Genres: Mysteries & Thrillers, Modern Detective
    Publisher's Summary:
After taking a bullet for his commander-in-chief, Secret Service agent Joseph Reeder is a hero. But his outspoken criticism of the president he saved - who had stacked the Supreme Court with hard-right justices to overturn Roe v. Wade, amp up the Patriot Act, and shred the First Amendment - put Reeder at odds with the Service's apolitical nature, making him an outcast.
FBI agent Patti Rogers finds herself paired with the unpopular former agent on a task force investigating the killing of Supreme Court Justice Henry Venter. Reeder - nicknamed "Peep" for his unparalleled skills at reading body language - makes a startling discovery while reviewing a security tape: the shooting was premeditated, not a botched robbery. Even more chilling, the controversial Venter may not be the only justice targeted for death.
Is a mastermind mounting an unprecedented judicial coup aimed at replacing ultra-conservative justices with a new liberal majority? To crack the conspiracy and save the lives of not just the justices but also Reeder's own family, rising star Rogers and legendary investigator Reeder must push their skills - and themselves - to the limit.
    Members Reviews:
    Future World?
It's somewhere between 2020 and 2030; the first and fourth amendments have been shredded by neo-con supreme justices and Roe vs. Wade overturned. Then a conservative Supreme Court Justice is murdered in what appears to be a botched robbery. The FBI's special agent in charge brings in his old friend Joe Reeder who has already discerned this wasn't a robbery gone wrong; it was an assassination. Then another justice is brought down and suspicion falls on Reeder.
This is a nice little story and if there weren't so many implausibility's it would be a good buy. Unfortunately there is only so much suspension of belief possible before it becomes too jarring and ruins the narrative. If they'd dialed it back just a bit It might've been a four star work. Maybe it's just me but I can't give more than two.
Very Good story and great narration.
This was a very good book. I really liked Joe Reeder aka Peep. I like a good mystery, conspiracy story and this was one for sure.
The story line and plot was very good. Who is assassinating the Supreme Court Justices? Joe Reeder found out! I liked that it kept me guessing until the end.
I won't give any spoilers but this was a good one, I liked the writing and the story flowed very well it didn't get confusing at all, it was fast paced and entertaining,
As for the narration it was great, Dan John Miller did a really good job on the female voices and read with emotion, He has a very nice reading voice too. This was narrated in 2014 so I am sure he has gotten even better.
I have already started the next book in this series and am enjoying it already.
    Good read and great narration..
Dont ask me why I read book three of this series then went back to one. Just goofy, I guess. However, I dont think I really missed anything important so they can all be stand-alone stories.
This one was about Reeder and how he first met Patti but thats about all that was different. Miggie and Fisk were in this one too but thats all. There was Sloan, Cribbs and Eaton, and Nicky Blount from book 3 made and appearance. It was about a conspiracy to kill Chief Justices of the United States, and they did get two of them.

The only problem is that Raine still believes Andy is innocent...
With the help of Cisco, her golden retriever, Raine must uncover the truth about the man she once loved and uncover a killer in the process.
    Members Reviews:
    Too much obsession
The second edition of the Raine Stockton dog mysteries dropped a notch from the initial book in my opinion due to to Raine's weird obsession with her college boyfriend turned eco terrorist Andy Fontana whom she hasn't seen in fifteen years. She hides information from her uncle the sheriff; her deputy ex-husband; whom she inexplicably is enraged with for 'allowing' the FBI and Homeland Security to search her house after Fontana had broken into it. In fact she's pissed off at her ex-husband Buck Lawson for pretty much everything that Andy Fontana has done or set into motion.
Back from the initial book in the series are Maude, Sonny, Uncle Ro, and of course the four legged members of the cast Cisco, Mystery, and the two Australian Shepherds. Dexter Franklin also makes another appearance as a villain. This is an excellent follow up mystery despite the aforementioned self perceived weaknesses.
    Like owner like dog..
I like the basic idea of this series, love the dog and all the characters... Except the main character/supposed heroine. 1. How can she be upset with her dog when he acts just like her: unruly, rude and dumb. At least the dog is likable. The owner is just rude to the point of mean at times and completely oblivious that she is usually causing more harm than help. Not sure I can carry on in the series.
    Dogs Lovers Only
While I totally enjoyed the canines in Rapid Fire, the "eco-terrorist/old boyfriend plot" just didn't make sense to me. Just as unbelievable was Raine's relationship with Buck, her estranged husband and childhood friend. Donna Ball is brilliant at portraying dogs and people who love dogs but not romantic relationships.
Although I thought Raine (dog trainer), her friends, family and dogs were all interesting & engrossing characters, Raine's estranged husband Buck's character was too inconsistent. Supposedly Buck was a dedicated law enforcement officer with a good heart who cared about people yet repeatedly cheated on Raine. Instead of being justifiably angry with Buck, Raine seemed to think it was her fault that he couldn't keep his zipper shut.
Strangely, Buck acted jealous of Andy, another childhood friend, because Raine dated Andy in college. Really??? Buck doesn't want to be faithful to Raine yet he was still upset about an old boyfriend Raine hasn't seen in about 15 years. Buck and Raine lived in different houses but weren't planning to divorce or trying to save the marriage.
Unfortunately, the men just ruined this book for me.
    Love Dog Stories
Love the story the way it was written and the way it was told .The person who told the story gave it a lot of timely emotion.

    Dear Dr. Owens,
If you are reading this letter, I am dead and I would be most grateful if you could solve my murder Forensic pathologist Dr. Samantha Owens thought life was finally returning to normal after she suffered a terrible personal loss. Settling into her new job at Georgetown University, the illusion is shattered when she receives a disturbing letter from a dead man imploring her to solve his murder. There's only one catch. Timothy Savage's death was so obviously the suicide of a demented individual that the case has been closed. When Sam learns Savage left a will requesting she autopsy his body, she feels compelled to look into the case. Sam's own postmortem discovers clear signs that Savage was indeed murdered. And she finds DNA from a kidnapped child whose remains were recovered years earlier. The investigation takes Sam into the shadows of a 20-year-old mystery that must be solved to determine what really happened to Timothy Savage. Nothing about the case makes sense but it is clear someone is unwilling to let anyone, especially Samantha Owens, discover the truth.
    Critic Reviews:
"[Ellison's] ability to neatly tie together the mysterious clues helps make this a standout in the romantic thriller subgenre." (
    Publishers Weekly Starred Review)
    Members Reviews:
Another Good Installment To The Series
I'm a long time fan of JT Ellison's work. Her characters are interesting, well developed, but not "perfect" (I find perfect protagonists really annoying).
"When Shadow" Falls is the third Samantha Owens novel. Unlike many "series" novels, one could pick this one up as a stand alone and thoroughly enjoy the read. There are a few minor spoilers, but again, unlike many "series" novels, one could read this third book and then pick up the previous two without feeling cheated.
Ms. Ellison's writing is tight, her vocabulary broad (but not gratuitously so), and her characters likeable. Her first novels were very well written but she seems to be growing as a novelist. When Shadow Falls was my favorite thus far, in fact it was so good, I listened to it in a day. You won't want to put this one down.)
Romance fans take note: while this book is published by MIRA (a division of Harlequin), it's not your mother's romance novel. There's a smidge of romance, but mostly it's suspense, suspense, suspense.
Joyce Bean was excellent with the delivery of the story
    I love Samantha Owens!!!
I loved it...I never can stop listening....I finish quickly! I always want to know what is going to happen next and I never can figure out the story line! I love that about the book!
    Lots of twists and turns
Too many unexplained flaws in the end. Had all the possibilities of a strong 4 up til the prologue. The majority of the characters were well drawn and the narrator was very good.
    Good chic lit
hate to say it but JT is getting formulaic....a sprinkle of this and a spoonful of that, stir up the plot and you've got another JT Elliison romantic mystery thriller....; not too hot, not too cold, but just right for those who adore her.
    Serial killer story? Cult story?
This novel is a horrid mess. It's almost as if the author changes her mind several times while writing. We are not looking at mere twists and turns; there are complete changes in direction.

    Not a book I enjoyed
    Any additional comments?
I thought the writing was mediocre and the plot not up to par. I am also not a fan of the story line. It seems very contrived.
    Another great page turner
I really enjoy the characters and started with the prologue which helps in understanding the characters. The action and locations are very interesting and Mr . Stelmach really gives an amazingly thorough description of The Ukraine and Chernobyl and the people of Ukraine and Russia. I hope he keeps writing sequels. I will read them all.
    Nadia and Bobby pursued again!
This story is growing on me. The original plot is given more depth here and old plus new conflicts keep the mysteries moving.
The first book seemed to end with many conflicts calmed, if not concluded. This book picked up the conflicts surrounding the locket and the intrusive reporter, plus adds a murder that lands Bobby in jail. Of course all are connected to the main story thread from the first book. Nadia, once again, is chased through Ukraine, and the Chernobyl exclusion zone, Much is resolved or at least calmed as in the first book, but this time there is a cliffhanger ending. I am looking forward to listening to the next installment!
Again, Tanya Eby does a wonderful job of narrating.

    Reall enjoying this series....
    Any additional comments?
I am working my way through this series and enjoying each new book. This is book #3, and I just downloaded #4. I have really come to like Charlie, Diesel, and their extended family. We met Stewart in the last book and I have come to really like him in this book. I had a Maine Coon for 20 years, and I can identify with a lot of Diesel's characteristics. There are only five audio books in this series, but I hope that there will be more in the future.
    Why a female narrator?
I really want to like this series, but it ends up being too dry. One thing that bugs me is the choice to have a female reader for a male first person narration. Just because the author is female doesn't mean that it should be read by one.
    Another satisfying mystery.
I love the Miranda James cat mysteries. There's always a twist and loyalty to family & friends is always emphasized. Healthy values abound. I will listen or read another.
    file M for Murder
Book is a great mystery but I feel it would have been a better read by a male...
    loved the book,but....
The story is a good cozy mystery. The author does not dissappoint. The narrator did a good job, but somehow the female voice was offputting a bit. However still a great listen overall.
