excellent first book

Yes, the characters are understated and interesting. The story is compelling. The writing and performance are excellent.

Who was your favorite character and why?

There are two characters that make me want to listen to the rest of this series and to whatever else this author offers--the Faroe Island dectective and the visiting British Detective. Both were introspective, non-hysterical, realistic characters.

It was clear. The distinction between characters was clear. Everything about the performance was well done

Slow

Slow going to an unsatisfactory end

Main character not particularly likable and one dimensional throughout

Can't wait to read the other books in this series!

While some may find the plot a little slow, I felt that it allowed me to savor the book. The character development was good, but we are left with intriguing questions about Reyna's background, as well as his future. The setting of the Faroes also makes this book stand out from the pack. Imagine my shock when I learned that the main victim and the killer have very similar names to both my grandfathers!

No extreme reaction, it was a good book, well read. I enjoyed it enough to want to read the next in series, but wasn't dazzled.

I hope the author spends more time describing the geography of the area more in future books. Also, in order to make his story more compelling, I think he needs to add more depth to his main character. Perhaps he is planning on having Jan's back story unfold through subsequent books.

I love Rose and her friends. Denise writes this so well! The plot is great in this whole series! But as Rose works to protect her boyfriend she also breaks your heart! The performance is great! Now on to the next book.

This book is amazing!! What a roller coaster! I am still trying to process everything that happened!!

I literally read this book nonstop! Every chance I had to read the next sentence, paragraph I would read whether I was at a stop light, dr office, etc.

This is the 8th installment/book of the Rose series and it is the best one yet!! I became a big fan of the Rose Gardner series from the very beginning. I'm usually not a fan of book series that have several books but this is one of my favorites! Each book has its own mystery and it's never the same, it keeps you on your toes guessing what may happen but then BAM you are so wrong!

I absolutely love how Denise Grover Swank makes you fall in love with the main characters and oh my stars she has a way of making each of those characters tug at your heart as well. The main character, Rose-she has grown so much and has matured a lot in this book. She's finally becomes one with lady in black. The lines have finally been blurred.

This book is a must read if you like cozy mysteries set around Halloween time. It is fun, has lots of Halloween decorating and recipes casually thrown in the story.

ONE OF THE BEST COZY HALLOWEEN BOOKS

I love this book. The narration is outstanding and it's just such a fun Halloween story.

Lots of Potential, but...

Would you say that listening to this book was time well-spent? Why or why not?

Sure, it was time well-spent. I always like giving authors a chance and it wasn't the worst book I've ever listened to. I love the fact that it's set around Halloween and the suggestions between chapters regarding party planning are very cute. The story just wasn't great. Too many kids screaming and the protagonist made too many ridiculous choices that continually put her in danger, or made her look like a floor mat. I kind of wanted her to get killed :)

I thought she did a great job with making each character distinct. Sometimes, I listen to books where they actually have different actors for different voices, but that pulls you out of the story, I think.

It probably could be a TV series, but I wouldn't watch it unless the protagonist got smarter. No idea who the stars could be :)

I would definitely give this author another chance, but not with this series.

Nice series keeps your interest

This is book five and I am hooked. Good story lines and characters, love the dog. Will continue to read as they become available. Would recommend to anyone that likes an easy fun who done it.

Another light and fun Sam Prichard thriller!

This series is best read in order. It is a wonderful private detective series which have my highest recommendation. (Books 3, 6, 7, and 8 are espionage thrillers rather than modern detective.) I have reviewed all of the earlier books in the series. From my perspective the audiobooks are excessively expensive considering the length of the books. Later in this review I discuss how to reduce the cost.

The Sam Prichard series books in order are as follows:

The total length of all books in the series is a little over 38 hours.

Author stretches material too much

The story after an interesting start just slowed down and spend a long time getting nowhere. I felt all of the un-needed slow moving discussions between Long, Prichard and Harry took up pages offering little. I am not going to consider the remainder of the Drifter books as my time can better spent and enjoyed on another author's material.

A Waste of Money

Would you try another book from David Archer and/or Mikael Naramore?

Absolutely the worst writing and storytelling I have seen in along time. Shut it off halfway through. How does drivel like this get published? Clichey upon clichey.

Bryant May and Dr Phibes

I don't like to go into plots, because I believe in books as unspoiled territory waited for the reader to explore and deflower it, as may be.

However I will make a comment on the performance. The character of Bryant is spot on; he is the voice and soul of Bryant, a cantankerous and moldy genius as perfectly conceived by his author as any of the great fictional detectives ever born. The voice of May, however, is almost, almost, insulting to the character. There is no subtlety, no finesse, no reality to this fictional character. He is portrayed as a bitter, whiney old man, in an effort which is little to no resemblance to the May I've read into creation in my head, and I'm guessing is the same for my fellow devotees to this couple of true characters, who deserve better.

Other characters are victims of the same water washing, but for the most part their voices aren't as angrifying as the deconstruction of my May, a gentleman and fierce friend of the oddball thought process that is Bryant. He's no Watson, as Watson

Okay... Just Downloaded the Next In This Series!

Probably, I coulda' guessed the killer, but I liked listening to Mike and Maggie do it. James Hayman's created an intriguing ensemble up in Portland Maine and Stephen Mendel talks them into their own distinct lives. So far this series keeps me listening and looking forward to another visit Down East.

The tension among MIke, Maggie and everyone who fills McCAbe and Savage's chilly world is as cool as Hayman's plotting. He makes writing mysteries simple as falling through New England ice. Yep, I just bought "Darkness First" to keep up with these folks. Can't write a better recommendation, right?

Excellent Book set in Maine!

I really liked this book! The author does an excellent job painting a true view of Portland, Maine! The characters are interesting, and the story line was captivating! I didn't want to stop listening! The narrator does an excellent job with the appropriate amounts of influx in voice and speed of reading! Another excellent book!

Not a Good Story or Characters

I love to find a new series that I can get excited about for the future stories. Well, this wasn't it. In the end, the only character I cared about was the victim. The Detective, Sonja, was so "holier than thou" and unlikeable, I can't even understand why I listened until the end. The book summary stated "Sonja will do anything to protect the innocent". Well, I am not even convinced she is that good of a mother to her two children. Enough "judgement from me." I won't be listening to the sequel.

The narrator was not good with the male voices. Otherwise, I just feel neutral about the narration.

Ok mystery but couldn't stay with it

Maybe it was the weak plot, or holes, or trying to hard for a thriller. I got bored with the story and didn't finish it. Strangely not feeling like I am missing something.

Disappointing after The Silent Girls.

Performance poor. Narrator's style was annoying. She dragged out "Test said" after every quote. Her male voices all sounded the same. The plot seemed to drag a lot and I'm not sure if it was the writing or the narrator's style. I will think twice before buying another book by Eric Rickstad.

Ramblemess

I forgave all of Rickstead's wooden "he said, she said" tag lines in The Silent Girls, because the characters and plot were compelling. The narrator's story was layered, and in truth, I believed we would learn something about the crazy cliffhanger ending that novel in Lie in Waiting. What a disappointment. This work rambles about loosely, the contrived plot unravels lazily, and the characters inhabiting the story were essentially static. The read itself was just ok...too many characters sounding the same and not a lot of energy when it was needed. Meh.

Overall a good book

This is the 2nd book written by this author that I have listened to. I felt compelled to write the review because of all the negative reviews I've read. The story was good - definitely not as interesting as the first - but still good. I found Sonja to be very real. I'm not sure why so many disliked her- I found her character to be interesting and real. I liked her...

As far as the story- it took awhile to get going. Once it did, it got much better.

Fun listen!

Great story, interesting mystery, tons of fun history to boot. I enjoyed Pirate Vishnu very much The story moves along at a good pace, with no boring bits in between. The characters were engaging and entertaining.. It had the right amount of fun, suspense and intrigue. Jaya Jones is a very capable heroine. I am really enjoying this series.

If there is one drawback, it is that the narrator used the same Scottish accent used in Artifact (the first book) for the Irish character. If someone can't do accents well, it's best to avoid them. I kept getting confused as to why the Irish character was speaking with a Scottish accent.

Pirate Vishnu: A Jaya Jones Treasure Hunt Mystery,

This was a thrilling Treasure Hunt that Jaya was presented with. Finding a long lost treasure and restoring the reputation of her family's hero were impossible to resist.

I enjoyed the alternating POV(Points of View) between Jaya and her great-granduncle Anand.

While understanding why he did it, I was sad that Lane left Jaya for her own good. I was tickled that he couldn't help but want to protect her afterwards. I loved the way that Jaya put him told him exactly what she thought of his unilateral decision to end their relationship. These two are an entertaining pair.

I really enjoyed the narrator!

I'm Sick of Jaya Jones

I'm sick of Jaya's simplistic way of looking at the world and the people around her. She takes everything and everyone at face value and is then shocked when she realizes that others have ulterior motives. The story was summarized over and over in almost every chapter and the characters are completely unrealistic. The story of Jaya's pirate uncle was more interesting than the story itself. I will not buy the next book in the series.

Great book with odd beginning

I love Michael Crichton and was a bit wary buying this book - after all, this book was written in the late 60's before he really started to develop his writing style / career. After the first hour I almost stopped because the plot was just too strange, but I was on a long training run and didn't have anything else to listen to. After the second hour it got really good and it was hard to stop. I'd recommend this book but there is something fishy (to me) about the claim that it was written in 1968. At the end of the book one of the characters mentions "taking the DVD out of the video recorder and placing it on the desk". Although I was born in 1970, I know for a fact that neither CD Roms of DVD's existed back then - so someone has done some additional writing / editing of Michael Crichton's original work.

Typical Gumshoe John Lange

I listened to this because I'm a big Michael Crichton fan, plus I was up to Z in a self-imposed A-Z reading challenge! This is pretty typical of his John Lange gumshoe pulp-detective tales. There are also a smattering of medical elements to the story - I guess that's Crichton drawing on his medical background. Fairly standard fare, engaging enough but not great.
