Booklist)"Beaton continues to make her hero one of detective fictions most agreeable characters." (
    Kirkus Reviews)
    Members Reviews:
    Series takes a dark turn
Murder is not nice, but Hamish Macbeth is usually investigating the death of someone who, as the saying goes, needed to be killed. Not so here. You can write a nice cozy murder but a descent into the world of drug trafficking is bound to be nasty.
I have listened to all the previous books in order and this is the first one I didn't much care for. Most of it is set away from Hamish's usual haunts and so lacks the humor of all the quirky villagers.
Davina Porter is an outstanding narrator and she does a serviceable job here. Still, I always feel that the series calls for a male voice.
Poor story line and pointless sex
What disappointed you about Death of an Addict?
The plot was convoluted and all about sex rather than about mystery.
What do you think your next listen will be?
    not sure
What does Davina Porter bring to the story that you wouldnt experience if you just read the book?
    enjoy her interpretation
If you could play editor, what scene or scenes would you have cut from Death of an Addict?
    most of the sex scenes
    Any additional comments?
the book lost its focus early and never regained it.
    Another Great MacBeth Mystery
MC Beaton does it again. This is another good book for a rainy weekend. First off though, I have to say that I find previous reviewers' criticism of Davina Porter's narration to be off-base. I realize that personal opinions are usually diverse, but those who think she was confused about what accent to use have likely never met a person from the Scottish Highlands. Davina Porter's portrayal of Scots in general, and Highlanders in particular, is pretty spot-on. The Scottish accent is difficult to do and, to an untrained ear, the Highland lilt CAN sound a bit Eastern European. I know it can be confusing for many Americans to have the prose read in one accent and the dialog read in others, but if you're not familiar with the way a certain people-group speaks, perhaps you should reserve judgement until you've done a bit more research. Davina Porter is English by birth, but is married to a Scotsman. She is one of the best narrators for these types of books because of her ability to speak in all kinds of British dialects. It disconcerts me to see her given bad reviews by those who may have meant well, but may be ignorant of the facts.
Now about the story, IMHO, this is one of the best in the series as far as plot and (further) character development goes.

This is a 'real time' mystery.
Where does Baltimore Blues rank among all the audiobooks youve listened to so far?
This is the best I've listened to in many months. Perhaps because I once was a reporter, I really identified with Tess and her predicament when her newspaper folded. I liked the fact that this is a real mystery, not a disguised "romance" novel.
What was one of the most memorable moments of Baltimore Blues?
SPOILER ALERT! I held my breath, knowing what was coming when the car started up without its headlights. But the details, the word pictures, were not so predictable. The entire book kept me spellbound.
    Any additional comments?
I immediately took advantage of the sale and bought the next three in the series. I know I'll buy the others as well.
    Very interesting; couldn't stop listening
It pulled me in immediately with descriptive writing and effective narration that allowed me to see and feel the story unfolding. It left me with a very vivid picture and a desire to hear more about Tess and the other characters which are likely to appear in subsequent books. I'm not sure why I initially chose this, but my next picks will be others in this series.
I'm on #8 - This series is almost unique
Why can't more "gentle" contemporary detective novels like this series be created? I usually avoid U.S. contemporaries because of the
    *poor quality of prose
    *over-the-top plots
*even more over-the-top action heroes and Barbie heroines who can run in designer shoes
    *campy dialogue
*even campier formulaic gratuitous sex and violence scenes and
    *overall dumbness factor
This series avoids the above and has the strength of quirky characters (but not TOO quirky) and a strong city setting. Lippman almost does for Baltimore what Rankin does for Edinburgh. Tess usually takes on a social issue (secondary to the plot), which may put off some readers. Except for #2 in the series (Charm City), I think Lippman grows stronger in her craft in each.
As for the narrator, Barabara Rosenblatt, who is much criticized in reviews of this series - I am among the minority who don't like her as the voice of Amelia Peabody, but I love her as Tess Monaghan I don't get the criticisms voicied here--- She doesn't slobber over the vowels -- I think her delivery is part of her fresh take on impulsive Tess. She reads as if speaking, so - yes - there are some human sounds. She is not Microsoft Anna!
So - if you seek a listen to relax, to be engrossed (and not grossed out or blood pressure raised), try this.
    Better than I expected
When I want a "who done it", I generally gravitate towards British authors. Americans usually have too much ... something: gratuitous vulgarity or sex or violence or all of the above.

    C'est tres bon
I loved every minute of it. One is not often able to read books set in 1920's Australia. The details of a city I know well as a modern 21 century city were delightful and accurate, the characters were wonderfully crafted and just as I would have imagined them to be in the 1920's.
Relaxing, fun, engaging ..... just made you smile and feel warm inside. Wonderful narrator who turned what could have been a very bland read into something well worth listening to. Congratulations - a job very well done.
    bons moments (good times)
I've got a very big bone to pick with Mrs Greenwood ,she has made me into a insomniac I'm not sleeping because I'm to busy listing to the amazing Stephanie Daniel ,I dusted this one of in three nights I couldn't get enough ,Miss Fishes sorted past and present are colliding ,but nothing flaps our beautiful flapper ,murder , ex lovers and her relations with the butlers strained to breaking point ,wont stop Miss Fisher from doing what she dose best.
    One of the best!
This (#12) is one of the best of the Phryne Fisher mysteries, not that it is a great mystery, but because it gives so much insight into Phryne and her background. She was an ambulance driver in WWI from the age of 17, and when the war ended in 1918, she settled for a time in Paris and became an artists' model.
Lovely story, great background, and important in understanding how Phryne became the strong person that she is. Very much recommended.
Stephanie Daniel does her usual excellent job with voices and accents.
    What Fun !!
I love these mysteries. They're funny, mysterious, entertaining and and a little tongue in cheek. I do alot of long drives and these are perfect.
    Solid Lady-Detective
This was a rather run-of-the-mill lady-detective who-dunnit with a predictably twisty plot (predictable that the plot twists, but not the direction... that was a surprise), and the main character is agreeably spunky without being annoying.
I do have to say, though, this is not exactly what I was expecting, based on the title. I was hoping it would take place in Montparnasse! I was preparing for a vacation in Paris, and was looking to get in the mood. So, if there's anyone else who is whacky like me, hoping to take Paris-vacation-listening with an appropriate theme... this is not it.

    Publisher's Summary:
Seventy years ago, Chester Bowie, a genius driven to madness, unlocked the mystery of how a weapon of unimaginable lethality allowed one man and his small army to conquer so much of the ancient world. The secret, however, died with Bowie in a fiery disaster that was no accident. Yet a series of cryptic clues were left behind, clues that geologist, and sometime government operative, Philip Mercer must follow if he is to prevent terrorists from unleashing the weapon on today's world.
On the front lines of an African civil war, a chance meeting between Mercer and Cali Stowe, a researcher for the Centers for Disease Control, propels the two of them into the epicenter of the greatest act of terrorism ever conceived. With a group of savage rebels backed by a one-eyed mercenary bearing down on an isolated village, Mercer and Cali discover a long-abandoned mine that had first been excavated millennia ago and that was worked again around the time of the Second World War. What mineral was wrenched from the earth and by whom? What is the significance behind the stone pillar erected in the middle of the village? And who is the enigmatic man with the scholar's mind and the killer's skills who rescues them at the last minute only to kidnap Cali upon her return home?
Again and again Mercer's path crosses that of his savior and the mercenary - at a glittering Atlantic City casino, on a barge high atop Niagara Falls, and in Russia where Mercer must stop a runaway train to prevent Armageddon. Each time they meet the bloodshed grows worse while the mystery deepens. Nobody is who they seem. Nobody.

    Disappointing
Would you recommend this book to a friend? Why or why not?
No, the narrator is usually good, but on this one his foreign accents are so awful that he is hard to listen to.
What was the most interesting aspect of this story? The least interesting?
The beginning concerning the Hindenburg is interesting and a good beginning, but the story goes downhill from there.
Who would you have cast as narrator instead of J. Charles?
Scott Brick, maybe. Jay Charles is usually good but he doesn't do foreign accents well at all and there are a lot of them in this story.
Do you think Havoc needs a follow-up book? Why or why not?
No, but then I couldn't listen to it all the way through because of the narration.
    Any additional comments?
I have enjoyed Jack Du Brul books in paperback, in the past and the stories and characters were pretty good. I especially like the Philip Mercer and Harry characters. I chose this one because J. Charles was narrating and he is usually quite good. However, he does a horrible job narrating this one and I found it hard to finish the book because of that.
    Stellar Narrator
Where does Havoc rank among all the audiobooks youve listened to so far?
I've 'read' every book in this series, one after the next. That's 8 intense, 10+ hour books in a row. One of my all time favorite series!
Did the plot keep you on the edge of your seat? How?
This series is like the Die Hard movie series - but with less blood. Intricate plots keep me guessing.

    Publisher's Summary:
More than 60 years later, Yano comes to America to honor the legacy of his heroic father by recovering the sword he used in the battle. His search has led him to Crazy Horse, Idaho, where Bob Lee, ex-marine and Vietnam veteran, has settled into a restless retirement and immediately pledges himself to Yano's quest.
Bob Lee finds the sword and delivers it to Yano in Tokyo. On inspection, they discover that it is not a standard WWII blade, but a legendary shin-shinto katana, an artifact of the nation. It is priceless but worth killing for. Suddenly Bob is at the center of a series of terrible crimes he barely understands but vows to avenge. And to do so, he throws himself into the world of the samurai, Tokyo's dark, criminal yakuza underworld, and the unwritten rules of Japanese culture.
Swagger's allies, hard-as-nails, American-born Susan Okada and the brave, cocaine-dealing tabloid journalist Nick Yamamoto, help him move through this strange, glittering, and ominous world from the shady bosses of the seamy Kabukicho district to officials in the highest echelons of the Japanese government, but in the end, he is on his own and will succeed only if he can learn that to survive samurai, you must become samurai.
As the plot races and the violence escalates, it becomes clear that a ruthless conspiracy is in place, and the only thing that can be taken for granted is that money, power, and sex can drive men of all nationalities to gruesome extremes. If Swagger hopes to stop them, he must be willing not only to die but also to kill.

Sharp action, but not very many bullets
An aging Bob takes up the sword, and becomes a master swordsman...? It's actually pretty good, and well narrated... but it was strange listening to a story of BLS in which he isn't peering through a scope for paragraphs at a time. The action was good, and a rather detailed account of swords and their history in Japan is given (I can't vouch for accuracy). Enjoyable.
Story of a commitment to honor.
I read some the less favorable reviews regarding this book. While I understand why their ratings were low, I found this book parallels the Japanese code of honor and political/criminal underworld.
The samurai element was something I related to and enjoyed.
Excellent job Mr. Hunter and Schriner.
Great work could not put down
great detail in well stated fashion, quality work enjoyed the suspense, action storyline and Narrator kept pace and interest will recomend to all
Good book , just not a great book!
This was a good read. It started off a bit slow ; but, got going at a good clip about the half way point. The narrator was a bit on the Dry side and tended to make me sleepy. He more then anything is why I couldn't give it more stars.
    Slow Development with Powerhouse Ending
I did not know this was a series book until I was listening to the author's note at the end of the book. I am glad I did not know because (with a few exceptions) I have tried to stay away from 'series' books. The reader on this book matched the main character very nicely throughout the story. The story developed quite slowly. Early on I was ready to put the book down and move on but thought I'd stay with it and see what happened.

    Bad narration
Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?
I bought this book against my better judgement. No.
What other book might you compare Bloodline to and why?
By the Sword. In as much as it has the same narrator, it is torturous to listen to.
What didnt you like about Dick Hills performance?
He has never been a good narrator. Occasionally, a few of his main male characters start out with reasonable voices. However, all of his male characters wind up sounding like Dustin Hoffman in Midnight Cowboy, though often with a voice up one octave. The females always sound like bimbos with high squeaky voices. His volume is all over the place as he overly dramatizes. His angry voice goes from screaming to a swallowed whisper. He is a very bad actor. I don't know what the judges were listening to when they gave him recording awards. I avoid any book that he does. There are many series books I have skipped for just that reason.
    Any additional comments?
Bring back Alexander Cendese, or any of the previous narrators, It was all so much more enjoyable before- I liked the characters then.
    Help,Jack!
Is there anything you would change about this book?
I would find Jack and see if he could fix this by having Dick Hill removed and Christopher Price read in his place. Hill has no sense of the character whatsoever.
What was one of the most memorable moments of Bloodline?
When I had to stop listening and just read the book was my most memorable moment.
How did the narrator detract from the book?
The narrator detracted from the book by opening his mouth and reading.
Was Bloodline worth the listening time?
Any other Jack book is great excepting the two Dick Hill read.
    Any additional comments?
Please allow a reading of Bloodline and By The Sword by Christopher Price.
The Dick Hill reading is a farce.
    Wrong voice
Don't like the change of narrator, he changes the mood of Jack. It's not Jack, Abe or Gia. I need the other guy back.
ARGH, Torture! Where is Christopher Price?
Would you try another book from F. Paul Wilson and/or Dick Hill?
It is a testament to how much I've been enjoying the Repairman Jack series that I would not skip the two narrated by Dick Hill. A Pox on whoever made the choice to use him as a replacement!! So many other choices out there if Mr. Price wasn't available.

    Fun
The Goldy Mysteries aren't meant to be serious literature or even, I think, all that logical - they're a silly way to make it through vacuuming the living room or backwashing the pool. I know Barbara Rosenblatt is a popular narrator, but her mouth noises gross me out. The listen would have been more enjoyable if the sound engineer had dealt with all that juicy smacking, popping and wheezing. Yuck.
A bit better than the first
While this one was a bit better than the first i still couldn't really care for the characters. The plot is good and a nice twist at the end. Just.......
    Fantastic narrator saves this story.
Barbara Rosenblat is FANTASTIC. Yes, I'm using caps because she deserves them. The book was only okay for me. It had some good parts mostly to do with Goldy emotionally hitting rock bottom in her on-going divorce, but I did not like Goldy as a character. In the book, she came across as too stupid to live. But, when Barbara read the book she made me believe in Goldy. Instead of being a failed detective wanna-be, she came across as a real woman with all of her pain and confusion and imperfections.
    Fun and love Barbara
This series is one of my favorites. It's mysterious, yet fun and has great recipes. Plus, Barbara Rosenblat narrates, what is there not to love.

    Deutermann's Best!!!!!
What did you love best about Sweepers?
I read Sweepers about ten years ago, followed by several other Deutermann books. Now that I am an audiobook fan, I went back to Sweepers because the plot has remained fresh in my mind over the years, and I wanted to hear Dick Hill read it. Great story, very believable. Love the way Deutermann, with a Navy career behind him, talks about the machinations of military protocol so knowledgeably. The sweeper is an erie character.
In my opinion, this is Deutermann's best, but that may be because it just appeals me. I was in Vietnam, so I could really identify with the whole situation involving the sweeper (not that I did anything like that). I have enjoyed his other books that I have read also, and just finished Zero Option on audio, which is also excellent.
    Amazing Story, Very Gripping
This book reaches out and grabs you by the throat and holds you there until you finish it, very well done. I also love how he works in "historical" pieces as well, it's so believable it's crazy. Very intense, very entertaining, and most of all a very good story!
silly plot, no twists, no surprises
In reading the other review of this book, I can only say "to each their own." I found this book to be more than a little ridiculous. The admiral instantly knows that his stalker is: a one-eyed, one-handed "ninja" SEAL from his distant past...and, by golly, that's exactly who it is...and they still can't find him. No twists, no surprises, just silly macho action that has a few fun points but no real drama. The character development left me not really caring about anyone. The female lead is "strong" just when she "needs" to be to prove the author is a liberated type. In reality, the female lead does stupid things and only by miracle doesn't end up dead as the result. The baddies are over the top. Oh well, maybe I've listened to worse, but this one was no great shakes.
Bit stupid, but still a good read
I found this earlier book less taut than the others I've listened to, but I did like the characters and the story. Some of them were kinda stupid, especially some of the actions and reactions of the female Navy lawyer, but it didn't spoil it for me.
    Wow! What a beginning
I don't know why more people aren't buying this author's books, because they are just great. The reader is also first rate.

The police think they're runaways, but Kristi senses there's something that links them, something terrifying. She decides to enroll, following their same steps.
All Saints has changed a lot since Kristi was an undergraduate. The stodgy Catholic college has lured edgy new professors to its campus and gained a reputation for envelope-pushing, with classes like the very popular "The Influence of Vampirism in Modern Culture and Literature" and elaborately staged morality plays that feel more like the titillating entertainment of some underground club than religious spectacles. And there are whispers of a dark cult on campus whose members wear vials of blood around their necks and meet in secret chambers - rituals to which only the elite have access.
To find the truth, Kristi will need to become part of the cult's inner circle, to learn their secrets, and play the part of lost soul without losing herself in the process. It's a dangerous path, and Kristi is skating on its knife-thin edge.

    WOW
This is the best book i've read in awhile. This is not my normal type of book but if you like the paranormal. Couldn't hardly wait till the end, but really didn't want it to. The closer I got to the end the more I started guessing about who did it. BOY was I surprised I was no where close.
    Excellent LIsten
I suggest you listen to "Absolute Fear" before Lost Souls. Absolute Fear introduces you to Rick Bentz and his daughter Kristi, to Eve (Kristi's half sister) and Cole Dennis and to a seriel killer. Both are great they have so many twist and turns, they keep you wanting to not turn your ipod off
    Vampire Tactics Used to Kill
Christie had been staying with her father, Rick Bence, a police officer and her stepmother, Olivia, while she recuperated from being attacked twice. Her attacker had never been identified. She felt it was time to move on and be on her own once again. They all were aware that there had been unsolved murders at All Saint's College. Christie had once been enrolled at the college but did not finish.
Christie left for All Saint's College, located in Baton Rouge, La. She wanted to be a crime writer. She had her stories published in other arenas but had never written a book. Christie was registered in a class that would be taught by a past boyfriend. He saw her name on his list of students who would be in the class that he would be teaching. Teaching was not his full time job. He was to teach a course about crime.
There is a killer on campus who selects girls who are loners. These young women don't have boyfriends. They are insecure, have a lack of self esteem and stand out as easy prey for the killer.
The killer taught at the college. He would select his next victim before he would strike. The student would know who he was and considered him to be an okay person. I've heard it said that the victim usually knows their murderer.
The book was an easy mystery to listen to. I've heard Joyce Bean narrate before and I was pleased with her narration. I've read other books by Lisa Jackson but did not find Lost Souls to be as enjoyable as Left to Die, another book by her that I have just finished.

    Peach Cobbler Murder
If you like Murder She Wrote on TV you'll love books by Joanne Fluke! Her main character Hannah Swenson, is a coffee and cookie shop owner with a quirky support cast from the town of Lake Eden, Minnesota. The author serves up many delicious recipes along with an entertaining story.
Listening to a Joanne Fluke story is like visiting with friends in Lake Eden. You get to know the characters and can't wait to see what they say and do next.
The audio version is well done too. The woman who reads them does a very good job.
This peach cobbler was made with saccharin
This book is so sickeningly sweet that you will need to schedule a dental appointment afterwards.
I felt as though I was being taught manners by a 70 year old woman with a Swedish accent.
Words were defined for the reader as if English is a second language.
In a fit of anxiety that I would empty my ipod audiobooks over the holidays I overdosed on Joanna Fluke and will never make that mistake again.
Same Sweet Characters, Dollop of Southern Delight
Where does Peach Cobbler Murder rank among all the audiobooks youve listened to so far?
It ranks among my favorites because I love the stories, I love the lighthearted and cozy mystery, I adore the fun characters, and I loved the little bit of Southern bits here and there. It just makes me happy.
What was one of the most memorable moments of Peach Cobbler Murder?
One of the most memorable was describing the Southern bakery. The murals, fixtures, glassware, tables, etc. It all makes me wish I had it for myself.
Have you listened to any of Suzanne Torens other performances before? How does this one compare?
I have listened to several of her performances and I think this is one of her best. The Southern accent did not grate my nerves like so many do.
Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?
Yes, this is a book I could have listened to in one sitting! I wish I had!
    Love this series
I really love this series, I have both read it and listened to it. Susanne Toren does a very job of narrating this story adding to my enjoyment. Hannah, her family and friend are delightful and keep me wanting more.
    Throughly enjoyable
Take time out from your stressful day and enjoy this quick, funny story. Also try your hand at Hannah's delicious sounding cookies.
