"It is so enjoyable roaming Venice with [Brunetti] - mulling things over, coming up against dead ends - that the outcome is a genuine surprise. Further, you'll want to catch the first plane over there." (The Washington Post)

Another terrific book by Donna Leon.
    Any additional comments?
I've listened to every book Donna Leon has written with David Colacci as the narrator. Ms. Leon is a wonderful writer, and she keeps the stories interesting throughout the series. The characters have depth and breadth, and Venice itself seems like a character in the story. I've tried listening to some of the books in this series read by narrators other than David Colacci, but none of them measure up to his skill. I haven't made it more that about 10 minutes with any of them. My only complaint about any of the books in this series is that I wish they were all read by Mr. Colacci.
    and then?
loved the characters, the setting, the writing. maybe i've read too many of the longer crime novels... we follow the story as the perpetrator is discovered/revealed... and that's the end! i always enjoy the "thrill of the chase"... this book ends with no chase, just the knowledge of who did it.
Guess that means i didn't want it to end? :D
    Not Your Typical Guido Mystery
Has Through a Glass, Darkly turned you off from other books in this genre?
Having ready all other Brunelli books up to this one I found Through a Glass, Darkly less appealing. It was not your typical who done it. The story took too long to develop IMO.
Could you see Through a Glass, Darkly being made into a movie or a TV series? Who should the stars be?
    Not really
    Any additional comments?
Not every story can hit the bull's eye. It was satisfying in the end. I look forward to hearing the next in the Brunelli series.
    too much information!
Like so many good series, the Brunetti books have gone from good stories to too much information. Not info about the crime or follow-up, but too much about our hero. Exactly what he eats and where? I blame word-processing and not enough plot.
Also I found the Italian accent the reader used, to be unecessary and a bit silly.
Who would like this book more than I did? An Italian cook or cook-wanna-be.
Love Donna Leon, did not like the way it was read
Would you recommend this book to a friend? Why or why not?
    yes. The book is great
How could the performance have been better?
I did not like the Italian accent in English as the original is in Italian. However, Italian words and titles should have been pronounced properly, i.e.

When John Heppel, a visiting writer to Lochdubh, first proposes forming a writers' circle, the idea is met with much enthusiasm from local residents. However, once the classes get underway, attendance quickly falters due to one undeniable fact: John Heppel is a long-winded, consummate bore. But is dullness a motive for murder? Hamish Macbeth wouldn't ordinarily think so. So when Heppel is found dead, Hamish begins looking for deeper meaning in the writer's stories, including a strange, unfinished soap-opera script that seems to suggest a more sinister motive behind its author's unhappy ending.

    Lochdubh rides again
This is a really great series, you can become a member of the community. The tall, lanky copper is like an orange lollipop, but there is much more to him. I had read this before, but for the life of me, I couldn't remember who did it, even as things unfolded! The victim is the sort you'd like to eliminate yourself, but the killer is worse, so you don't feel ambivalent about Hamish taking him/her down. This makes it a cozy
The narrator is excellent, he sounds English, but does well with dialects and accents without making in unintelligible to Americans and Canadians.
There was a short lived TV series with Robert Carlyle, who is quite short. I wish they'd do it again, but with David Tennant. He would also be another good narrator. IMHO
    terrific
This is a delightful book with interesting, quirky characters. The narrator is terrific. What a great way to ease the pain of Houston traffic. I can't wait to read more in the series.
    The usual fare:-)
All these Hamish McBeth "mysteries" are the same. LIght and comic even while he solves a murder and juggles ex-girlfriends. It's pleasant enough to pass the time and un-objectionable.
    Fun twisty plot
This is a great book to listen to. You get attached to the main characters and feel like you are living in that little town. The plot was not to complicated. This is one of those perfect books to lsiten to during your commute. I would get another book by this author
Appropriate Title For A Rather Boring Book
Just finished this one. It isn't the best book in the series. I have not listened to all of the books in the Hamish MacBeth series, but of the ones I have finished, this is probably my least favorite. It just seemed to drag on and on and I couldn't wait for it to end. I didn't really care who did it. The title is rather appropriate since I found this whole book to be a bit of a bore.
Mr. Malcolm is, IMHO, not the best choice of narrator for these books. He reads very quickly; often running sentences together (including dialog), completely ignoring punctuation and using little inflection. I hate this. He sounds like an older man so, of course, all of the characters sound like old men.

    Before I wake
I enjoyed this book very much, good story, well written. The end however left wide open perhaps for a sequel. The narrator was wonderful, keeps listner's in consent supense, was excellent.
    Before I Wake
Very good book with a christian air. Recomend to anyone wanting a good book without sex or bad language.
    not finished
The story line was good and interesting and we enjoyed listening to it but the end was weird --like the author just got tired of writing and ended it before anything was resolved. So it left us very unsatisfied. For me if the end is bad the book is not worth my time so I would not recommend it.
    OK
I used the title OK for this book because it was just that, OK. I have purchased all of Dee Henderson's books on audible and this book was simply not her best. Her earlier works are much better such as the O'Malley series. If you are new to Dee Henderson purchase her earlier works prior to this book. If you read this book first you may not get a true understanding of how utterly talented Dee Henderson really is. This book did a poor job with developing a story line that was believable or interesting. I would not even classify this book as a romance or suspense; it was simply a mess.
BEFORE I WAKE- Where is the sequel?
Would you say that listening to this book was time well-spent? Why or why not?
The book was great....until the NON-Ending.
What was your reaction to the ending? (No spoilers please!)
I could have lived with the ending if there was a sequel. But it just left you hanging with no answers!

    welsh accent
Would you listen to Evan Blessed again? Why?
I read a lot of the reviews and they all said the narrations werent very good. As one said review said it didnt sound very British. As a Welsh American I can tell you it sounds Welsh not everyone in Great Britain sound like some one out of London. The Welsh have their very own sound just like the Scottish and Irish. All Celtics sound different. I would hope that you would understand that Wales is its own country with its own language and customs. We are very proud of being welsh and we have worked very hard to keep those things that make us Welsh alive both in Wales and around the World. I feel the Narrator did an admiral job with the accent many well known actors say they have a hard time with the accent. So when you listen to this book please look at it as a way of also of a way of enjoying a beautiful country a people. Maybe learn a little about a country in the British Isle that doesnt get written about in fiction at least on this side of the pond.
Who was your favorite character and why?
    Story is set in Wales
What about John Lees performance did you like?
    very good Welsh Accent
A bit more grim than I was expecting.
Would you listen to Evan Blessed again? Why?
Probably not. It was a good story but I prefer my audio books to be a little more light hearted.
Did the plot keep you on the edge of your seat? How?
Yes. It was a very well structured mystery with an occasional chapter from the killer's point of view.
What do you think the narrator could have done better?
He could have made each voice more distinct from the others. All the characters sound similar. Even the females.
Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?
A few parts startled me and because I listen to audio books at night. I had a few creepy dreams.
    Any additional comments?
I got this book because I am a big fan of the "Her Royal Spynesss" series by the same author and I was startled at how different in tone "Evan Blessed" is. I'm not a big fan of books than linger on the grim details of violence against women and it's always cute, young women for some reason and this is no different. This book stops short of fetishizing the details of the sad fate of a missing 17 year old female hiker in modern day Wales, but it comes close. I'm not sure if that's good or bad but it definitely different from what I'm accustomed to from Rhys Bowen. To put it another way, it's more James Patterson than Agatha Christie.
    Love Constable Evans!
This is the first book other than the Royal Spyness books that I've read by Rhys Bowen. I liked the other books so well that I bought this without even looking at the reviews. I was not disappointed in any way.

    Always a Good Story
Who does not like Alex Delaware ? Jonathan Kellerman always delivers a great story!
    Ho Hum
Narrators can make or break a good book and what we consider good narration is certainly a matter of choice. I advise you to listen to the sample first before spending your credits. If I took my own advice, I'd still have a credit to spend! While he does a good job switching between characters, I find the overall narration flat and more like listening to a weather report. The story is interesting but it's been pure torture listening to this narrator. I'm halfway through the story and I can't listen to one more word. Nails dragging across a chalk board - you know?
    Another Good One!
Kellerman is always a good read - and the narrator is just terrific. I could listen to him forever. Kellerman's books always have such interesting characters and I love his girlfriend Robin. He writes with a great sense of humor too!
    Most Boring in the Series
What disappointed you about The Web?
The first 60% of the book was pointless, could have covered it all in a single, short chapter, finally picked up at the end, but by that time, I didn't care much
What was most disappointing about Jonathan Kellermans story?
Dull as a plumbing convention, it was well read though. If you skip any in the series, this is the one
Kept my interest but not his best
HUGE fan of the Alex Delaware series. This one focuses on Alex and Robin - on a faraway island and it starts out OK but really became much too unbelievable as it proceeded. Held my interest and I didn't put it on double speed but did think about it. I was just trying to fill in the books from this series I hadn't read/listened to you. So I can check off "The Web" now :)

    Publisher's Summary:
Then, one terrible day, everything changes. Nat accompanies her colleague Angus to a prison in Chester County, where he's a guest lecturer. They are hardly inside before the speaker system announces a "disturbance" and the warden orders a lockdown. They're smack in the middle of a riot. In front of a horrified Nat, a prison guard is fatally injured. Nat rushes to help him, only to hear his last words: "Tell my wife. It's under the floor. The money."
At that moment, reinforcements arrive, the riot is quelled, and Nat and Angus are escorted out of the building by U.S. marshals. Remembering the dying guard's words, Nat feels she must find his widow. But this is no simple quest, and along the way, Nat is framed for murder and the retiring scholar finds herself in a desperate fight to save her own life.
    Editorial Reviews:
Natalie Greco, a law professor, is teaching a class at a local prison when a riot breaks out. Trying to rescue a dying guard, she's witness to his last words: "Tell my wife it's under the floor." Suddenly she's suspected of murder, chased by cops and killers, not to mention a colleague with romance in mind. Barbara Rosenblat is a perfect match for Scottoline's dramatic story. Scottoline writes with breakneck speed, and Rosenblat reads breathlessly. Scottoline injects humor, and Rosenblat inserts wry tones to relieve the intensity. Scottoline's characters are fully dimensional; Rosenblat breathes life into them. The author's cast is large; Rosenblat invents a huge range of voices to enliven the exciting story.

"This one finds the author in good form, combining suspense- and character-building effectively." (Booklist)

    Enjoyable
Daddy's Girl is a fun read and just when you think the mystery is solved you get another treat. Performance is, as usual, excellent. Book is not as good as the regular series with Bernie and gang but the Nat Grego is the typical gutsy heroine and most LS fans should enjoy this book.
    Great book
Quick moving, with twists and turns. A great read. Very enjoyable!
    Great Book
This was a great book to listen to and the narrator was excellent, I really enjoyed all the twists and turns in the story. This book was put together very well with the exception of why the book was titled "Daddy's Girl", I thought the title should have been something different.
I still give this 5 stars and look forward to listen to more of Lisa's books and hopefully with the same narrator.

Well William Kent Krueger did it agan with this great mistery. If you like misterys then you will like this one.

Great location, lots of local color, and all that could be done is a pervert book
This book started out fairly well, but it became a book about men that sexually abuse children. And then kill them. I am not a fan of stories about sexually abused children...or the mindless murder of children. Surely today's authors can experience success without exploiting children
Cork is on the run for his life!
I've been reading the Cork O'Connor series and I just can't get enough! Many of the books in the series could function as a stand-alone, but I would definitely read/listen to the book before this one as this is a continuation of that story. In the book before this, a powerful-and rich man loses a family member and now is looking to get revenge by taking Cork's life (and/or possibly Cork's son's (Stevie) life). Cork is injured, bu gets away and finds refuge with a cousin near "Copper River" in Minnesota up in the wilderness. We don't just get the benefit of another story involving our "hero" of the series, but also the enjoyment of a different location and some new characters including his long-lost family which includes a single mother and her young son, as well as a character who is a female-version of Cork. Cork must rebuild a relationship with his cousin, act as a father-figure to her son as well as try to get himself and his family out of the mess that was created from the book before. Think he can do it? How can he do it plus deal with all the matters that are occurring in his new location? The best way to find out is to read/listen to this book! What are you waiting for?!?!
    Solving Murders on the Run
Cork is on the run with a price on his head, suspected of murder himself . . . so he runs to his cousin, Jewell, in Michigan . . . where he finds little solace. The mystery continues to unfold, and its as good a story as the first books in the series.
    Great Series...
I am flying through this series. There is always a mystery within a mystery, complex and interesting. I pride myself on figuring out the "who done it" in movies, as well as books. These books keep me guessing and that is a good thing. Plus, the characters are becoming very important to me as they develop. Can't say enough good things!

    Publisher's Summary:
The Paradise Men's Softball League has wrapped up another game, and Jesse Stone is lingering in the parking lot with his teammates, drinking beer, swapping stories of double plays and beautiful women in the late-summer twilight. But then a frightened voice calls out to him from the edge of a nearby lake. There, two men squat at the water's edge. In front of them, facedown, was something that used to be a girl.
The local cops haven't seen anything like this, but Jesse's L.A. past has made him all too familiar with floaters. This girl hadn't committed suicide; she hadn't been drowned; she'd been shot and dumped, discarded like trash. Before long it becomes clear that she had a taste for the wild life; and her own parents can't be bothered to report her missing, or even admit that she once was a child of theirs. All Jesse has to go on is a young man's school ring on a gold chain, and a hunch or two.

"Prose whose impeccability speaks of decades of careful writing." (Publishers Weekly)

    Great listen.
Heard just about all the Spenser books so decided to give a listen to Parker's new hero - Jessie Stone. Turned out to be a great choice. Stone has all of Spenser's knowhow but is a lot more flawed - and more human. Very easy to identify with. The mystery was also excellent and had me guessing to the end.
    He said, she said....
Love Robert B. Parker, love his books, and especially love his Jesse Stone character who is a good solid man's man, tells it like it is. This is a good "read", light on the mystery but the reason for my two star rating is the constant, annoying "Jesse said" and "she said" which got under my skin. Driving 150 miles somewhere this week? This is the right book, nothing too complicated, few characters to keep up with, and the ending is rather predictable.
Good mystery, too much empty angst
Jesse Stone, police chief of Paradise, Mass., is an appealing character -- think Spenser without the ever-annoying Susan and Hawk -- and his crimesolving is compelling. But enough of Jesse's endless discussions with his on-again, off-again ex-wife and his overblown "to drink or not to drink" soliloquies. You get the point after the first round, and could easily fast forward through all the rest without missing anything vital. Reader has the right style but mispronounces several words -- where is Joe Mantegna when we need him?
    "he said"
What disappointed you about Death in Paradise?
The narration is flat. I was distracted by the constant
What was your reaction to the ending? (No spoilers please!)
Its one of those endings like turning another page. This is simply one chapter in a longer volume.
You didnt love this book... but did it have any redeeming qualities?
The story explores a flawed man doing a good job as a cop, but the narration makes it seems so mundane.
    Not the Best Jesse Stone
but still pretty good. I generally like most of the Jesse Stone mystery series novels and though this one would've been better with James Naughton as the narrator it was pretty good. It had all the normal shortcomings of of RBP novels; aka all the he said, she said, Jesse saids at the end of sentences.

Demands that Meg has a hard time refusing, which is why she's tending the switchboard of Mutant Wizards, where her brother's computer games are created, and handling all the office management problems that no one else bothers with. For companionship, besides a crew of eccentric techies, she has a buzzard with one wing, who she must feed frozen mice thawed in the office microwave, and Michael's mother's nightmare dog. Not to mention the psychotherapists who refuse to give up their lease on half of the office space, and whose conflicting therapies cause continuing dissension. This is not what Meg had in mind when she agreed to help her brother move his staff to new offices.
In fact, the atmosphere is so consistently loony that the office mail cart makes several passes through the reception room, with the office practical joker lying on top of it pretending to be dead, before Meg realizes that he's become the victim of someone who wasn't joking at all. He's been murdered for real.
Donna Andrews's debut book, Murder with Peacocks, won the St. Martin's Malice Domestic best first novel contest and reaped a harvest of other honors as well. This is the fourth book in the Meg Langslow series, which features the intrepid Meg and her cast of oddball relatives. Their capers are a lighthearted joy to read.

"This may be the funniest installment of Andrews' wonderfully wacky series yet." (Romantic Times)

    Very amusing!
Maybe it's because I worked at a computer company but a lot of these characters and details of the environment struck home for me, not to mention the D&D memories from when I was a kid. I really enjoyed this book and the reader. She did a super job. This book has permanent spot on my ipod for when I need a little lift. I wish Audible had more of this series.
    Fun, light-hearted mystery
With each book, Donna Andrews gets better. Her quirky cast always create far more problems than the murder of some unpleasant character does, making for a nice light-hearted listen.
I was not delighted with the narrator, who made too many of the men sound like surfer types, but she did a great job on Meg's voice and the general narration. Overall, the narration was okay, just not as good as some I have heard.
    Fun murder mystery
This is a light-hearted murder mystery. Seem like an odd thing to say, but it is. Its fun to listen to and the characters are fun to. Want something just fun and entertaining - get this one.
    Listen again and again...again and...
Another repeater! This is a 'forever' on my iPod. After 33 times, I still chuckle at my favorite parts and feel Meg's pain in dealing with the unique individuals populating her world. We NEED the rest of these books!
    A VERY FUNNY BOOK
I picked up this book because of the wackey title and felt the need of a laugh or two. I enjoyed it immensely! This was the first book of Ms. Andrews that I had read and I quickly went in search of her others.

Lieutenant Jonathan Stride is suffering from an ugly case of deja vu. For the second time in a year, a beautiful teenage girl has disappeared off the streets of Duluth, Minnesota, gone without a trace, like a bitter gust off Lake Superior. The two victims couldn't be more different. First it was Kerry McGrath, bubbly, sweet 16. And now Rachel Deese, strange, sexually charged, a wild child. The media hounds Stride to catch a serial killer, and as the search carries him from the icy stillness of the northern woods to the erotic heat of Las Vegas, he must decide which facts are real and which are illusions. And Stride finds his own life changed forever by the secrets he uncovers. Secrets that stretch across time in a web of lies, death, and illicit desire. Secrets that are chillingly immoral.

    OUTSTANDING
Immoral is an outstanding mystery filled with rich character development and relationship dynamics. The plot never lets the reader down & one's interest is held through the last page. Brian Freeman is an excellent author & I eagerly await his next novel.
    Superb
Immoral is a superb mystery that readers will certainly enjoy. Its elements of a fast pace, myriad twists and unforeseen turns, great character development, and suspense make it hard to stop listening. This book had me gripped to the point that I lost sleep because I had to get to the end. This is a story you will want to tell your friends about. Brian Freeman is an excellent author and I look forward to his next book.
    Quite good
I can see why the reviewers were impressed with this debut novel. The characters are quite good. The depiction of the small town seems very real. And the plot is full of intricate twists and surprises that somehow make sense. The ending, I thought, was the best part. I am usually able to figure out the mystery ahead of time. In this case, I "saw it" almost at the same time as our protagonist, detective Stride. I disagree with the reviewer who said we did not have the evidence -- we did! Mr. Freeman was simply great at disguising it so you didn't even look in those particular corners.
    Excellently done.
    Outstanding Debut Novel
I purchased this book on sale and I am so glad i found this new author. It is always a hoot to find a first time effort to be this good and one looks forward to further efforts from Mr. Freeman's pen.
The story has been detailed by others and all I will say about it is that I defy you to figure it out before the author finally reveals all of the twists and turns that he has woven into the fabric of his text. Jonathan Stride is likely to be around for a while and I suspect that Serena Dial will be also. Freeman does not create subtle characters. They live hard, love hard and many of them die hard.
It was also hard to put this book down because it moves along at a steady pace and there are no easy resting points. A most promising debut!
Joe Barrett was excellent with the delivery of the story
    "Born Bad"
I'm really glad Brian Freeman's first read made a good impression on me, as now I'm sure I'll read them all. He's a good writer, never repetitive and writes good dialogue.
